Hi guys,
Since yesterday morning my phone has been on G (edge/gprs) only instead of 3G (hsdpa) like it was almost always before. I'm on voda uk with good 3g signals in London and phone is showing -51 to -65 dBm (22-31 asu) which i think is good.
Also my wifi that always worked is also not connecting anymore...what gives? Regarding wifi i mean it connects but home page doesn't load any more on constantly refreshing even once. It does on my laptop on same wifi signal.
I have just updated normal apps like handcent sms/linda manager etc. since yesterday and restarted phone many times and done nothing drastic...so why these data problems all of a sudden?? Thanks
Carrier: Vodafone UK
Country / Language: English (UK)
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): update 1 - stock rom
Tried soft reset by pulling out battery...on restart phone showed 3g for a second before wifi kicked in...still no page load...after switching off wifi it again went to G only!! Damn I don't wanna have to lose and reinstall all data/apps!! This so irritating..I love this fone and this is how it treats me!
Lunacy!
Now the fone automatically goes to 3G UMTS/HSDPA (wifi off) but with atrocious signal strengths of 0 dBm or -111 dBm with 1 or no bars!!!
I always get awesome signals in my room arnd -55 to -69 dBm and all 4 bars so what the hell is going on!!
Is this vodafone's issues or my N1 is dying slowly!?
Back to G n no wifi use!
Any help anyone?? please!
Not sure how to help you, but I thought I'd mention this if it's at all related:
my phone has twice now shown that it's on Edge connection, but run at 3G speeds. Not sure what the bug is but I ran a speedtest and was able to stream Pandora and browse the web without any trouble.
thanks for that but i'd sure love to see some pro's to help me out!
sounds like a carrier issue... however if you are rooted, try reflashing your radio and see if that helps and you may want to try each radio out as well
wifi is working today with full signal but on mobila data it stays on G with full signal but 3G sometimes with 1 bar or no signal...wtf!

When was the last time everything worked correctly? What have you do with your phone since then (different rom, different radio flash, new mods that alter system files, etc)? Have you tried calling your carrier to see if they are having problems in your region?
Nandroid backup, factory restore, reflsh cyanogen, test. If it works again you've got some bad setting stored. I can't help you find that setting but at least you've narrowed it down.
If this is affecting your wifi, then it's not a carrier issue. It's something with your phone.

2 days ago all was well. I just updated linda manager/handcent sms and 1-2 apps from market. I'm on stock rom so no radio etc. for me and I don't mess with system files and keep my phone clean by clearing caches etc. Thanks anyway.

I suppose so...but this is quite odd considering all worked super before and I haven't done anything! Stock rom!

Do a factory reset or a full wipe through recovery. If that doesn't resolve the issue, then let us know.
So I've been messing around with more roms lately trying to find one that has all the features I like and that are easy to use. I am on the latest clockwork recovery through rom manager. I was on the korean radio 5.08? and flashed around with superhybrid, miui bundle, desire hd, rodriguez miui. and an oc-kernel for 1152mhz? something like that.
My phone just won't connect to the data connection no more, on any of the rom. i tried changing my APN to a couple. I tried switching back to my usual rom, I tried upgrading to the radio to the latest korean radio of 5.12. I was able to get edge connection for a brief moment, but it barely works. When I say brief i mean like 2 minutes then there goes my edge connection....
I'm hoping this is network side in this general area only, but is there a possible problem on my phone? any solution if it is?
I would try it out at different part of town that you usually get 3G.
If it's like that all the times everywhere than it might be the phone but I doubt it.
I had the same problems for about 2 weeks here at work (everywhere else it work fine). Tmobile must have fixed the tower cause it's working fine now at work also.
After the most recent stock update that added Sense 3 I started having intermittent radio problems. I had always been on stock and never fiddled with the firmware, radio, anything like that. The radio would randomly disconnect from the network and stay disconnected for a while, or I could get it back faster if I rebooted the phone or cycled flight mode. Using data often acted as a catalyst for the problem and I could reduce occurrences by using wifi when I'm at home. Total annoyance. I decided to try fixing it myself and I've found a lot of useful information here.
I first installed a couple different ROMs and found that after booting, there was no signal, so it was probably the radio. I had HBOOT 2.0 so I had to downgrade, use Revolutionary to get S-OFF, then start working with different radio versions. I haven't had any luck since.
Current setup:
Bought unbranded and unlocked from the UK. 900/1700/2100 model
Revolutionary HBOOT-6.13.1002
Baseband: 20.4802.30.0882U_3882.10.08.28_M
ROM: Virtuous Quattro RC2 (Android 4.0.2)
Network: 3 Sweden (UMTS 900/1200 network)
I've also had the same problem running Cyanogen 7.1 and Android Revolution HD 2.1.3. I had high hopes for ARHD since it said it specifically was designed for the radio I've flashed. I actually even went through and tried every single radio release from Gingerbread for the IncS. Same problem on all.
Strictly speaking it's not actually a no-signal problem, it's a very weak/malfunctioning signal problem. When I do a network scan I usually only see two of the three GSM networks here and most if not all 3G networks are missing. The few times my home network has actually shown up in the network scan list, I can't register on it. I get the "Temporarily unable to register on this network. Try again later." message.
I hope I've done enough searching and effort on my own here before posting. Needless to say I'll be grateful for any help I can get here. After many hours of reading, flashing, rebooting, reflashing, rinse and repeat, I'm looking for an end to this!

wow..i was having the same problem. totally forgot about the antenna in the back cover. i was going nuts flashing different radios wondering why i was getting only edge. i feel stupid. thanks
I had no idea the back cover made any difference at all. Thank you for pointing that out to me! I was seriously about to go buy an iPhone or something, but I remembered I loathe the keyboard in iOS
I'm all good now! Running radio .28_M with ICS and things are as they should be. At least throughout all this hassle I got my radio upgraded to a hopefully less-crashy version and I got some ICS up and running
Cheers guys!
First of all, let me start of what I've tried doing, in order.
New SIM-card, factory reset, unlock + root, custom ICS (VirtousQuattro).
None of the above solved my problem, it still persists! The problem is, the phone disconnects completely from the network (no bars) and I can't manually search for a new provider due "active package transmission" or something like that, it stays disconnected for 1-3 minutes and then reconnects. It happens fairly often, like once for every 5 times I try using the phone. I haven't noticed the problem when being connected to a WiFi, so I'd assume the problem is related to an issue between the phone and the network.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any idea how to solve it?
Have you tried flashing a new Radio? I can't see how that would differ from flashing a custom ROM, but might be worth a shot?

So much for being "unlocked". Also, hey mate
Yes Naforcee, I have exactly the same problem. And it never happens while using wifi as you said.
It started immediately after I updated to Sense 3 / Android 2.3.5 from HTC.
What was the version of Android in your previous Rom? I had issues when I was on Froyo and went to Gingerbread without flashing a new radio.

Don't think it's a physical problem, I have perfect connection and it just dies out for about 2 min until it reconnects, and I can't search for network when it's down due to active packet transfer..
Could try a new SIM card. Might not fix it, but worth a shot - I've seen this posted as a fix for other people.
I used to have this problem on certain radios on the Desire Z, after flashing around a bunch of radios to try all of them. Stuck with one and it went away, so it was software for me.

Try flashing this radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471861 using the ADB method. If that doesn't help I recommend doing a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM. There are a lot of different custom ROMs for IncS which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463
I personally like Niks ROM and Android Revolution HD.
Looks like rom installation issue.
My son's Inc-S having a similar problem to the OP, but more severe. A couple of weeks ago he entered airplane mode with all behaving normally, but since exiting airplane mode at the end of the flight he hasn't been able to register on the network (voice or data). We've tried:
fiddling with all the network settings
change sims (all sims work on my Inc2, none work on his IncS)
cleaning the antenna connections
reboot
factory reset
flashing new ROM (Android Revolution HD 2.3.0)
flashing new radio (3805.10.03.29_M)
So far, no satisfaction. We're still seeing no bars of reception (with an X) in the notification area, and don't have the option to manually or automatically register with any network operator (although several occasionally show up as options under "Search Networks"). We usually get the error message, "Unable to search for network while packet connection is active" when trying to select a network. Funny thing is, mobile network data has been shut off on his phone for the past month so the packet connection is definitely not active (wifi is on). Based on a network signal analyzer app, the phone is receiving the same mobile network signal as mine (-65 to -70 db) when they are side-by-side, so the problem does not appear to be in the antenna. The phone works just fine using wifi but is useless as a phone.
Any ideas about what to try next?

Probably a RIL-Radio communication issue. Recommended radio is the newer 3822.01.08.14_M radio, so maybe you should try that.
Is anyone else that's running CM10.2 on Droid 4 having data connection issues? Have you fixed them? If so, how? Does the code need to bake a while longer before data starts working?
I'm running CM 10.22010831-NIGHTLY-maserati
WIFI is working, but I can't get data to work otherwise. I did a factory reset and started fresh. I've tried flashing the ROM and gapps package multiple times. I wiped cache and Dalvik. I tried repairing permissions.
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Marty

Tried that and still no love.
I think i need to update my baseband radio, but I can't find a more recent baseband version for the Droid 4.
I'm currently using CDMA_N_05.11.01P LTEDC_U_09.11.00.
Anyone have a link for a newer version or any idea how to get one?
Thanks,

Do u have the issue on stock rom slot? If so then take it back to stock with the latest utility floating around the forum. Check for system updates if there is one dl and install to make sure u have latest radio if problem persist then it's a Good possibility it's A coverage issue or hardware related problem..

Ok, here's where I'm at now.
I updated my stock rom. baseband is now at 5.25.00. Still won't work on CM10.2.
3g will work on my stock ROM, but not on CM.
I've screwed with the mobile network settings and I can't get any difference in results.
LTE works great with CM10.2, but as soon as I'm in 3g territory, I'm dead in the water. I can receive and place voice calls and I get text messages through the messaging app, but anything that requires an actual data connection, like google voice or the browser, it won't work.
Help!?
updated PRL, still no love.
In some versions i needed to add APN manually, then it would work. In earlier version i had the same problem that 3g would not work. Also problem with reception bars - it would always show like 1 bar or smth like this but would work just fine.

It already has several APNs set up. The one I have selected is: APN: vzwinternet, MCC:311, MNC:480. Most everything else isn't set.

Set adrift without data.
Day 10: I've run out of water. The sea gulls... they mock me... with their wings... and beaks... and of course their raucous calls. They are scheming against me. My only friend is the lone shark that circles me constantly. He's attentive like that. A bit forward though. Keeps trying to kiss me. I tell him "NO KISSES FOR YOU! Not until the second date."
Also, still no data.

First off, thanks for the chuckle
Secondly, you're getting no data at all? Are you on Verizon? If so, do you have LTE in your area? My personal experience has been LTE data is working fine but 3G has been REAL spotty. I did see dhacker on twitter post a new razr build with some 3G tweaks he was testing. So that is being worked on and should filter down to us when it does get figured out.

3G was working fine on 10.1, but is nonexistent on 10.2. It actually acts like it wants to connect to a roaming tower if I switch it to GSM, but it can only see it and won't pass traffic.
I could just go back to 10.1 or run stock, but my pigheadedness, that's a word now, won't allow it.
On the brighter side, I am learning a great deal more about my phone that I had previously known.
The problem seemed to rectify itself around the nightly build on 9-15 or 9-16.
I know I'm a bit late, but I always do the * # * # 4636 # * # * in dialer and I turn off the radio, set the radio to cdma/lte and turn it back on, usually it isn't letting all those other antennas run and it seems to pick 4G LTE faster in my experience.
I think it's a CM10.2 issue...
Hi, my friend with a Galaxy S3 is having the exact same data retention issues we are having on our Droid 4's, which makes me think this is a bug in CM10.2 on various devices more than an issue with our phones. I can get LTE data when I have service, but find that once I loose service, even for a moment, the phone then never re-connects to LTE again and just sits there with white bars instead. Toggling data or airplane mode seems to usually trick it into reconnecting to LTE, but it is becoming annoying to have to constantly check and toggle around to get data back. I've tried every nightly and the M1 and have found the issue remains through the 11/19 build. I've installed the ROM into slot1, I'm not sure if overwriting the stock ROM and using the stock slot with CM10.2 helps matters at all, has anyone had any experience with using CM10.2 in the stock slot instead of Sot 1?
