Apologies if this has been covered over and over and over... and my eyes just aren't seeing it anywhere!
I'm running a rooted CS Hero w/2.1 and am ready to get my feet wet with a custom rom. Everything I'm finding seems to be geared towards Sprint Heros. Is there a difference? Is there anything I should watch for or avoid? Can I grab, say, a cyanogenmod rom that's listed for the Sprint Hero and run it on mine?
Thanks for the wealth of work and info you guys have here. I've been lurking for a few weeks - you are an amazing group!
Ok, answers please. Be gentle with the new guy.

You should be able to run the cyanogenmod for CMDA heros without any problems. I do not think mms would work until you add your apn settings into it though.
Also roms based on sprints ruu usually have a few errors that come up when using it with other carriers. The errors you can ignore but they get annoying. The one I always get is the PCS vision data error. The other is the handsfree activation. They also don't have voicemail notifications for non sprint users. This can be worked around by using google voice as your voicemail service.
Just make sure you don't do the radio and prl updates for sprint , as these can give you signal problems or give you roaming charges.
I am not with CS but a regional carrier and have jumped between roms every other week. Aside from the errors I get in the sprint based roms everything works fine.
Also make sure you do your nandroid backups, and read the instructions for each rom.
Thanks, d-shade. I'll make the jump and see what happens.

Hey Guys,
I'm really liking my first Android phone, but am having a heck of time working out the kinks. Phone calls and text work. Here's a list and if anyone can help out with any of them, I'd really appreciate it.
1. The phone constantly tries to do Sprint Auto-Activation. I *believe* this is causing the GUI to crash constantly...I've tried three ROMs and none run very stable. Is there a way to disable that pesky auto-activate?
2. I need data settings for Virgin or Boost. Coming from an iPhone, I don't see a setting for an APN anywhere. I think I have the settings, but I'm not sure I'm putting them in the right place.
3. Is there a special ROM I should install since I'm not on Sprint? I'm surprised there aren't more Verizon ROMs around.
Please help with any suggestions.
Realized this should probably be in the "General" instead....

So your on virginmobile but with a cdma hero? Awesome to get to the apn settings just hold the green call button down till you get the voice dial or just do it from your menu. When it comes up say, "open apns". It will take you to the apns. Are you rooted? Also to get the phone to stop doing that pesky
Thanks for the help. I'm working on the APN stuff now. I think your last post got cut short. I'd really like to know how to disable to auto-activate crap. I'm also getting invalid username/password, but I'm sure thats just becuase its trying to log into Sprint.
So u can use sprint phones on virgin mobile? please how do u do this..that 25 buck plan looks to good to pass up.. How would i say use my hero on virgin mobile..
I'm only able to place calls and text. NO DATA which is driving me nuts. I need the APN/Data settings for VM, but no one seems to have them.
And my phone keeps trying to do Sprint auto-activation, which is also driving me nuts. And I keep getting GUI crashes no matter which ROM I use. So far the process has been anything but smooth.
Does anyone have ideas on disabling Sprint auto-activation? Thanks!

I knows this isn't much help but do a search for cricket. I saw a way earlier just gotta find it cuz i'm not doing anything i'll look to ..... try this enter ##data# then hit edit enter your msl then turn off vocoder. Also hit menu then commit changes
I'm pretty sure I seen an APK in the phone somewhere that was related to the over the air activation stuff... might wanna look for it.
I could be wrong, that may be for the Moment, but that's Android on Sprint too so I dont see why the Sprint Hero would be different.
I too am really interested in putting my Hero on Virgin Mobile US. Has anyone figured out the data settings for wap/apn and whatever else is needed? If not, if one were to purchase a cheap virgin phone, say a jax, could the information be taken from there?
Also, would it be necessary to use a non-sprint ROM since virgin mobile runs on the Sprint network???? Thanks for any help.
Ok, I tried the BitterSweet and the nags went away and everything is running smooth on my Hero...I'm really liking it. Just no DATA. I'm still waiting on settings from someone. I tried VM tech support and they didn't even know what an APN was...seriously.
Yes, you can buy a cheap $10 Virgin Mobile phone and use those "settings" for the Hero. That's all I'll say about that.

Lol, not asking about that one setting. I already knew that part, I mean if someone were to buy a cheap phone would they be able to get all the settings, apn/wap and so on from it. If so, which phone, and what else would be needed?

can program your apns in by holding down the green call button and saying "open apns" also try pushing ##data# and you'll get a menu with data and mms stuff. Another note I've been doing some research to avoid the overpriced $75 dollars to get the phone flashed to metropcs and (two things) one they say they've rooted the hero. Two they say that for a normal flash all they do is change the prl.
I've accessed the ##DATA# and APN menus, but I have no idea what to change them to. I've also looked into PRLs but I can't seem to find one for Virgin. I know they just use the Sprint network so wouldn't the PRL be the same?
If anyone is really interested in using the Hero on Virgin, Boost, or Cricket PM me. I searched the internet for hours finding all the info and I don't mind helping someone else out. The more people we get working on this, the more likely we are to figure these settings out.

**** I'm trying to get it to work on metro. My main thing right now is to stop it from doing the hands free activation. I know we have slightly separate goals but that is something we could work on together. What you really need is for the op of this thread to send you his prl.
I got rid of the Sprint Auto-Activation by installing BitterSweets ROM. It's working great so far.

Unfortunately for me the phone I wanna do this on is a nonrooted phone. I did find a good really good explanation here
Just realized you were the op can you upload your prl for others? A full nandroid would be awesome
The PRL I'm using is the standard one that comes with the Hero. I haven't changed it. I can upload it, but it should be one everyone has by default on Sprint. I forget the version...

okay if it's 60665 or 60664 don't worry about it thanks though
If i have my Hero flashed from Ntelos to Metro Pcs since i wont be in Ntelos area anymore will i lose my ROM im on the 2.3.4 GB deck 5 23-2011 rom. I was told i will only have talk and txt. Will i still be able to have wifi working. Also i have google voice with sipgate thru wifi which i wont need anymore unless i dont have a signal. I just want to make sure i wont lose this rom or radio. Experts please
I have never flashed a phone to a different carrier, but I think I can help.
Wifi has nothing to do with the carrier and will not be affected by the flash.
From other posts on here I have read that the ROM has nothing to do with the carrier either. Once the PRL and Radio are set up correctly you can use any of the Hero ROMs.
hope this helps

My service provider is Cellular South, not Sprint. I have been running CyanogenMod 6 for around a year with no issues as far as function is concerned, but recently tried a new ROM mostly for speed and a few bells and whistles. It worked great but I had issues with receiving text messages (not sending) so for the time being I reverted back to my CyanogenMod nandroid backup.
I would still like to try a newer ROM but was wondering if there are any issues or special steps I should expect to run into because I'm with Cellular South and most of these ROMs are based on Sprint.
I have no idea whether or not this had anything to do with my texting issue but I just wanted to ask before diving into anther ROM.
Thanks!
A friend I work with has a Droid that was originally verizon. They guy he bought it from flashed it to work on cricket and put a 2.1 rom onto it that has problems doing various tasks.
I know there are many newer roms that work great on the droid, but would he need to find a rom that is made for that particular purpose? Or is it something that is totally separate and not be affected?
I just switched to Cricket. It is done outside of the rom.
I just searched and found it. You have to download a bunch of software and do several things with each one. Not difficult, just a lot of steps.
After you change carriers, any rom you install will use that one.
One other thing. There is a $15 fee from Cricket to add a different esn number. Just whine and they will waive it.
I switched to cricKet as well. You need to set up your APN after each ROM switch or you'll have a bit of trouble using data and you won't be able to send or receive MMS. I didn't use the APN provided by the tutorial in this thread because I always got stuck sending MMS and I had to use QPST to get 3G working, but I've got it all working. What problems are you having, exactly?
Sent from my Droid using XDA Premium App
He is running a dirty version off Eclair that has numerous bugs. different features crash every time they are accessed.
It has been flashed before, and then put onto cricket. so if the steps to make it fully functional on cricket have been done, do they need to be redone after a newer rom is installed?
Hello,
I just retired my venerable Samsung T699 Relay 4G (RIP QWERTY Keyboard) and, just picked up an unlocked, "refurbished" AT&T Note 3 for pretty cheap (it was sold as an "International" model, so I didn't know it was an AT&T version until I got it). I've had T-Mobile service for the last couple of years, and the big draw, for me, is WiFi calling/SMS; I've installed SafeStrap and been trying some T-Mobile ROMs, but can't seem to get WiFi calling to work. Obviously I've got a T-Mobile SIM card, and I've tried changing/adding APNs, and installing different builds of KitKat (some of which won't even boot - NB4 and NF9 seem to work best), but I still can't get it to work properly. I've been racking my brain and searching the Interspace for the last two weeks with no luck... what am I missing? Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance!
Hello,
As a fellow N900A user on Tmobile, I have been trying to get wifi calling as well.
I tried using a tmobile stock rom with wifi calling baked in (tweaked), but that did not work. I was told that I need to add an emergency 911 address, but even doing this did not do it.
I would think that wifi calling is doable, but something tells me that tmobile might be doing something similar to Verizon. Rumor was that Verizon had a list of IMEIs, and if your IMEI was not on their list, you couldn't bring the phone over to Verizon, even if it were CDMA capable (once again, this is rumor as I cannot confirm this is true).
The closest I have been to getting wifi calling through tmobile was having the settings show on the stock tmobile rom, but that was about it. Maybe someone in the forums has an answer/got it working, but I have yet to see one. I'll keep you posted if I somehow get it to work, but something tells me this won't happen for a while.

Yeah, considering I have zero service with any provider where I live (but 4G LTE 100 yards down the street), WiFi services were the single reason I went with T-Mobile. Considering the Unlocking Bill, one wouldn't think a carrier could block IMEIs from being used on another carrier... but I have a hard time reading the fine print, so there is that.
I've tried several of the stock T-Mobile ROMs, and while WiFi calling was there, it simply wouldn't enable; it would try to enable, but never would. Have you contacted T-Mobile and asked if there are any potential fixes? I'm considering doing that, but am worried that they'll say "Oh, that's your IMEI, looks like you can't use it on our network SORRYABOUTYOURLUCK!"
I have contacted tmobile about this before.
Their response was that they did not know why it did not work. They helped me set up the emergency 911 address, but they said when it comes to other hardware they couldn't give me a reason why it wouldn't work.
I remember dwetherill (sp?) mention that some n900a users were able to get wifi calling on their phones. I don't know if the modem can/will affect wifi calling, but at this point it's the easier thing to test.
I'm on the NJ5 modem - I might try testing out NC2.
Have you tried carl's TMB version of the norma stable rom? Check it out if you haven't. Wifi calling is supposed to connect automatically. I haven't seen it work yet, but I'll keep you posted if somehow I get it to work.

I'm on NC2, and haven't gotten anything to work as of yet... I've been looking for modem threads, but I guess I need to look a little harder. I'll search that ROM out and give it a shot, and let you know if it works with NC2. Thanks for the heads-up! :good:
So I tried NC2 modem, and it is not allowing for wifi calling.
I went to tmobile yesterday to get another line added. Rumor on the tmobile side is that AT&T is working to get wifi calling setup for the n900a's by around April. Take it as a rumor at this point, seeing how it came from tmobile, but the rep made a good point - AT&T tends to follow what tmobile is doing, so who knows.
Here's to hoping they're right.
BTW, I went to the note 4 tmobile forums, and I grabbed a deodexed stock rom. I noticed that there were a few files related to wifi calling (had WFC in the name). I tried playing around with it last night, and I managed to get the settings. It will even go so far as to turn the phone GSM radio off when you select wifi only. It's doing what Tweaked was doing for me (which was keeping the wifi calling option grayed out (enabling). I think I'm still missing a few files to get it to work, but I'll keep playing around with it later and let you know if I have any success.

I wonder how that would work regarding using a T-Mobile SIM in the AT&T phone, and if it could support cross-carrier features like that.
You're a braver soul than I, that's for sure. If I knew anything about what I was looking at/for, I'd be more than willing to help get this nut cracked... otherwise, I look forward to your findings!
