My service provider is Cellular South, not Sprint. I have been running CyanogenMod 6 for around a year with no issues as far as function is concerned, but recently tried a new ROM mostly for speed and a few bells and whistles. It worked great but I had issues with receiving text messages (not sending) so for the time being I reverted back to my CyanogenMod nandroid backup.
I would still like to try a newer ROM but was wondering if there are any issues or special steps I should expect to run into because I'm with Cellular South and most of these ROMs are based on Sprint.
I have no idea whether or not this had anything to do with my texting issue but I just wanted to ask before diving into anther ROM.
Thanks!

So, for all you who have a G1 with AT&T service, I want to know if you're experiencing the same problems as me. Btw, data is disabled on my at&t account, I use wifi for internet.
For me, this happens almost every day. There will be times when the phone shows full bars, but when making calls or sending texts, nothing works, so clearly there is no service. Reboot the phone, then it shows no network. After several attempts to register with AT&T network through "wireless settings" and rebooting the phone several times, you'll get connectivity back.. eventually.
I have not really narrowed down the source of the problem. I've mainly been on SuperD 1.9.x, and occasionally switched to some Hero ROMs. I've gotten service on all these roms.
Here are my guesses:
1. The Danger SPL and latest radio combo is unstable for AT&T?
2. Rooted ROM's interfering with AT&T connectivity? Should I go back to unrooted, stock cupcake/donut?
3. My SIM card is pretty old, time for a new one?
4. Internal hardware problem? I bought my G1 used off of Ebay, came in pretty good condition.
Anything else?
I hope you fellow AT&T/G1 people have some feedback on this. I.e. what ROM's have been most stable for you in terms of network connectivity? etc.
****EDIT****.
Went to the AT&T store, picked up a new SIM card. Everything works like a charm. Apparently, my sim card is so old, it was from before cingular mergers with AT&T, etc. Wow.
Apologies if this has been covered over and over and over... and my eyes just aren't seeing it anywhere!
I'm running a rooted CS Hero w/2.1 and am ready to get my feet wet with a custom rom. Everything I'm finding seems to be geared towards Sprint Heros. Is there a difference? Is there anything I should watch for or avoid? Can I grab, say, a cyanogenmod rom that's listed for the Sprint Hero and run it on mine?
Thanks for the wealth of work and info you guys have here. I've been lurking for a few weeks - you are an amazing group!
Ok, answers please. Be gentle with the new guy.

You should be able to run the cyanogenmod for CMDA heros without any problems. I do not think mms would work until you add your apn settings into it though.
Also roms based on sprints ruu usually have a few errors that come up when using it with other carriers. The errors you can ignore but they get annoying. The one I always get is the PCS vision data error. The other is the handsfree activation. They also don't have voicemail notifications for non sprint users. This can be worked around by using google voice as your voicemail service.
Just make sure you don't do the radio and prl updates for sprint , as these can give you signal problems or give you roaming charges.
I am not with CS but a regional carrier and have jumped between roms every other week. Aside from the errors I get in the sprint based roms everything works fine.
Also make sure you do your nandroid backups, and read the instructions for each rom.
Thanks, d-shade. I'll make the jump and see what happens.
A friend I work with has a Droid that was originally verizon. They guy he bought it from flashed it to work on cricket and put a 2.1 rom onto it that has problems doing various tasks.
I know there are many newer roms that work great on the droid, but would he need to find a rom that is made for that particular purpose? Or is it something that is totally separate and not be affected?
I just switched to Cricket. It is done outside of the rom.
I just searched and found it. You have to download a bunch of software and do several things with each one. Not difficult, just a lot of steps.
After you change carriers, any rom you install will use that one.
One other thing. There is a $15 fee from Cricket to add a different esn number. Just whine and they will waive it.
I switched to cricKet as well. You need to set up your APN after each ROM switch or you'll have a bit of trouble using data and you won't be able to send or receive MMS. I didn't use the APN provided by the tutorial in this thread because I always got stuck sending MMS and I had to use QPST to get 3G working, but I've got it all working. What problems are you having, exactly?
Sent from my Droid using XDA Premium App
He is running a dirty version off Eclair that has numerous bugs. different features crash every time they are accessed.
It has been flashed before, and then put onto cricket. so if the steps to make it fully functional on cricket have been done, do they need to be redone after a newer rom is installed?
Maybe I'm the only one with this issue, but I can't seem to connect to the network when I use CM10.2 on my m7_wls.
I am currently using the m7spr builds of CyanogenMod (maybe that's the issue; m7_wls vs m7spr) and everything goes great... up until I actually boot in to CM and all that ever happens in terms of cell signal is "Searching for service." I have used three differenct CM nightlies since no stable releases have been released for the HTC One yet. I have used several custom Sense ROMs with no issue. I haven't tried any other AOSP-based ROMs yet either.
For those who don't know, Ting is a Sprint MVNO. It's super cheap compared to most carriers, though it doesn't have any sort of an unlimited plan. Anyway, Ting is a Sprint partner and uses their network and devices, but maybe that's the issue? I have to update my PRL and Profile to get Sprint devices to work with Ting; however, a PRL or Profile update in Sense (or Stock) should still be valid, "carry over," in CM, shouldn't it?
I've tried PacMan and AICP. I didn't look at the stock ROM long enough to see if that was working when I got the phone, nor did I make a backup of that.
Now there was one point where it was working when I was on PacMan and then it stopped working again! The problem is I have no idea what I did to make that happen. I've checked all the APN settings and they look good. I've tried the MetroPCS/LTE/LTE IPv6 and even the T-Mobile ones just to cover all the bases (since Metro and Tmo merged they're basically one company but run separately still.)
I was just wondering if anyone has run into any similar issues and if so what you did to fix it.
EDIT: Data works if I turn off LTE? What the hell am I doing wrong then?
Bumping this for visibility.
No LTE
I have the same issue XT1053 on CM 12.1 with no LTE but if I turn it off, I then have H+ 3g. I am also with metro and have even tried it with tmobile apn with no luck. Same Metro APN Settings work on stock.
Found a Fix
So last night i fix it on CM 12.1 buy removing all other APN settings that didn't belong to my network in my case just Metro PCS. After doing so my LTE signal shows and I am getting perfect signal.
Very interesting. I just got a 1+1 and am having the exact same issue on stock CM-OS. I think when I cut the micro sim to nano to fit it may have damaged it enough to where the LTE didn't work. However it doesn't explain why it worked for that short time (unless it just glitched to a working state).
I'll try your method, and then I'll try getting a new SIM and letting Metro mess with it.
My old phone is also better than my father's so he's getting an upgrade today. If he runs into the same issues which is HIGHLY unlikely I don't know what I'll do but I'll certainly update the thread.
I did as al970h mentioned and sure as **** it's WORKING!
I've gone through two phones and quite a few ROMs over this. Now using OmniROM for 1+1.
Just wanted to update, Looks like I don't have to go to Metro today so that's one less thing to do.
