Help restoring with Nandroid after a bad .zip update - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to flash a theme update from zip in recovery mode and it messed something up royally. Now when I boot the phone it shows the HTC logo then just goes black and never comes back. I made a Nandroid back up right before I flashed and it said it completed it successfully, but when I go to recovery (volume down + power button) and select nand restore, it says its restoring and then restoring complete but when I reboot it still goes to the black screen. What do i need to do differently? I have never had to restore until now.
I'm on Fresh 2.3.3

Try wiping all data and dalvik and then restoring the nandroid.

Do adb logcat. It might actually be booting without a bootscreen.

Can you walk me through that? Sorry I haven't ever heard of it.
EDIT: Ok I let it run for a while and it eventually boots up but the boot screens/sounds never show or play. So I completely wiped the phone and reflashed Fresh 2.3.3... still no boot screens or sounds! I don't know what I could have messed up that complete wipe/flash doesnt get rid of. Any ideas? Also now Titanium is saying that it cant get root access because my phones not rooted properly. What tha?

Bump... Still having this issue. The phone is usable but the boot images and sounds are gone

nobody has mentioned this but maybe you just have a bad Nandroid. maybe something did not copy right or something in the phone internally got deleted during the backup/restore process. i saw on android forums somewhere it happened to some person using an Eris. Cant quite remember how he got it fixed but he ended up fixing it somehow.

Well I thought it might be a bad nandroid too, so I just wiped the phone and flashed fresh without ever restoring the backup and it still has no boot images or sounds. It's the strangest thing. When I flashed the first time to 2.3.3 the re were definately boot images and I flashed from the same file this time.

You might have to just use the RUU and start over from scratch, I had to do that once and it sucked.

stuck and android loop, when everything should be normal

well i have had cyogenmod 3.6.8.1 for awhile and everything works perfectly and smoothly but i just turned off my phone to switch to my new 2400mah battery and when i turned it back on i got past the splash screen but now its stuck at the android boot loop so i thought wait acouple minutes...and well.. no luck. i dont get it...any ideas?
try fixing the ext file system. It could have been messed up if you just took the battery out. If that doesnt work, try wiping and reflashing the ROM. Btw, does it work with the normal battery in?
wipe
if you can get into recovery then u know everything is fine. if u can get the update file for the rom on ur sd then wipe and flash it see wht happens then
Usually these problems can be taken care of with a wipe and a reflash of the ROM. Hopefully you performed a nandroid backup and can restore your settings. If not, there is really no other way but to wipe and reflash and lose your data.

well i shut the phone down properly but i tried what you said anyways... and on the first try it had an error and told me to run it manually..but i tried again and it worked so i rebooted but still no luck. i did a nandroid backup recently...could that possibly have anything to do with it?
and also...when i did the nandroid awhile ago...it got stuck at the boot loop as well...so i did the wipe/update and it worked. and now i turned off my phone for the battery change and this happens....it seems like maybe its something with the rom? idk...i dont see why a nandroid would mess anything up
i suggest to wipe and reflash. That should fix it.

Set up ADB using the guide in the sticky, and connect your phone through USB
type
Code:
adb logcat
as you boot your phone
see if anything is repeating. if nothing ever shows up, its possible that the battery could be defective

try this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535797&highlight=wipe+ext
But after you install cyans recovery image (or if you already have it installed)
* FSCK for ext filesystems from the menu
if that doesnt work then wipe

clockworkmod restore boot loop?

hey everyone, i'm new here. Sorry if this has been posted before, but i'm having a bit of a problem right now.. I rooted my CDMA hero last night. I made a nandroid backup of my phone before i flashed any roms. I flashed a rom and did something wrong, so i tried to restore my nandroid backup... and i got stuck at the "htc - quietly brilliant" screen. i then found out i'm supposed to wipe all data, so i did, and flashed the nandroid backup again.. same problem. so i flashed a different ROM and it loaded up.. so, again, i wiped all data and tried to restore my stock ROM (google didn't back up contacts when it said they were, so i'm trying to restore to get them back)... and i'm STILL getting the quietly brilliant screen. Any help? Thanks!
When you restore - it does take a while to boot up. How much time did you wait on the white screen? Also, did you get any errors during the nand restore?
no, no errors.. and i waited a pretty long time. Enough to allow the "Quietly Brilliant" screen to flash black, then come back up a few times... i'll do another nandroid restore though and watch for errors. But when i did it before, I didn't see any.
this can happen if you don't have enough space on your sd card during the backup. it has been my experience that nand will not give you an error when it runs out of space, everything appears to have completed as it should, but when you go to restore not everything is there, thus causing the phone not to boot.
also as someone else stated the first boot after a wipe can take a very very long time. 10-15+ mins. (this is not always the case)
my advice (for what it is worth) try a full wipe, and load a new rom. another thing to consider is that most (should be all) roms do not come with gapps built in. once you flash the new rom, before you try and boot it, you should also flash gapps. for instance aospCMod will not load without it.
my sd card actually got messed up before all of this (pulled the battery out when phone froze) so i reformatted it.. it was almost completely empty when I did the backup. It's an 8gb card, too.
yeah i'm actually using a version of aosp, and i installed gapps. i'm currently running it now, but i lost all of my contacts (100+... haha)
I'll charge the phone up, restore and let it be for 10-15 mins like you suggested, when I get home later today. Thanks everyone so much for the help.

Stuck on Boot Screen

Hi guys. Yesterday night I was installing a few new apps but the seemed to be stuck installing forever. So I decided to reboot. However, after the reboot, it never goes past the second boot screen.
I know I can just flash to another rom but is there a way to save my data in the instance? I can still get into recovery mode if that helps. Thanks
I've read you can hook up to your pc and mount your sdcard from cwm. Never tried it but if it works you can save your data that way then maybe a master clear/cache or dalvik wipe will help.

You can mount USB in recovery and get all your stuff off of your SD that way. You can also nandroid your current ROM in CWM and re-flash it, then restore from backup. As far as saving texts and all that, Idk if you can, but I'm sure someone else does.
Also, you could try clearing dalvik, cache, and then running the kernel cleaning script. It's gotten me out of a few binds before. It might help you to where you wouldn't have to flash again.

Droid 3 seems to be unbrickable

I've tried many different things in alot of the threads I've read on this forum and nothing is working. I tried using the One-Click root on my Droid and it didn't work, come to find out, it was an outdated method for the Droid 3. It messed up my phone. My apps constantly crash. My texts disappear, then sometimes reappear switching the place of the texts randomly. When I reset from settings, it restarts phone, but nothing is reset. It won't let me check my e-mails(G-mail). I can hardly do anything. I've tried flashing back using the AP Fastboot method from psouza(spelling?). On my phone it says Battery OK/Program OK/USB Connected. So I run the "CLICK HERE - Flash Verizon DROID 3 OTA 5.6.890 to phone.bat". It failed.
Then I tried ovelayers method. Everything seems to go good. And I was happy! But when it rebooted, it took me to the android triangle screen. SO I selcected reboot. And absolutely nothing changed. Am I Missing a step? I also tried doing it again, but after it went to traingle android screen, I selected the update from the SD card, installed it, rebooted, and STILL nothing. Nothing changes. Ever. Nothing is working. Please help. I tried being as descriptive as possible so that it answers most potential questions.
*Edit* I've also tried the RDS Lite method. Crashes on step 3.

I have the full system file already. That's what I tried using to update. The problem doesn't lie there though. The problem is that no matter what I do, the phone never resets. It's on right now. If I uninstall apps right now and restart my phone, they'll still be there. Likewise with installing them. If I text anyone, when I restart my phone, that conversation will be gone. Likewise with call logs and everything else. The phone literally after every restart goes back to the same position it was when I badly rooted the first time. No resets, recoveries, hard resets, flashes, etc have worked thus far. I've used ALL the one click SBF versions also, just to be thorough. The phone literally will not change. What I need is something similar to a computer. I need to completely wipe it. Then I need to completely reinstall it from scratch. Just like reformatting your hard drive. I've heard that there has really been no case of an unbrickable phone, that there is always a way to fix it; but this far, I haven't found anybody that hasn't had their phone fixed. Even those that have had similar issues fixed it, and I've tried the methods they've provided to no avail.

Can you install bootstrap? That way you can wipe data, and there should be no way it boots back like nothing has changed

I will attempt that now. How is it used? I can build pc's and am rather intelligent in the IT of macs and pc's. But haven't had to do much with Androids till now. Lol. I've tried the wipe/factory method already. I understand that .apk is the file extension for Google Play apps, and I can install it via the SD card, but what do I do from then?
*EDIT* It's installed, it has bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery. Reboot does nothing. Bootstrap says there's an error running a command. Looks like a directory about files and hashcodes. "Working Directory: null/Environment: null".

First you need root access. Use Motofail if you haven't:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wpl88mwm6eilhe6/motofail.exe
Open bootstrap, press bootstrap recovery, afterwards press reboot recovery.
If it doesn't work, shutdown your phone, hold X and press power and do it from there

So you did wipe/factory reset from recovery and it still boots like nothing happened? I'm not sure how thats possible.. stock recovery shouldnt have anything to do with what you messed up in your rom. Maybe for some reason your phone is unable to write data anymore

Just saw your vid and its exactly as you say. I don't know whats going wrong..
Writing yo your internal might not be the same as writing to your data partition.. I don't see why else wiping from recovery would fail since that part should be unaffected.
You said sbf says its succesful however on your screenshot i see errors.

Well, I don't have insurance on it, as I had gotten it from a friend. So, no. Not without paying an arm and a leg, at which point I'd pay for a new phone instead. I just really wish this could be fixed. I've heard no phone was unbrickable. AM I THE PRODIGY?!

Keeps restarting for no reason - rooted

I rebooted my phone to install a font and now it continues to turn on (HTC logo) and then restart. Tried to get into recovery and it just exits...
I had my phone off at night and turned it on - read a few text messages - and went to replace the ****ty font I installed yesterday.
Just looping.
Any help?
Can't even turn it off lol - I would need to go into bootloader and click power down. It is odd - I didn't do anything and it started up perfectly before 5 minutes I did the fonts.

I flashed the recovery with CWM and installed Android Revolution HD 6.1
I was just wondering if it was safe to re-flash the recovery again to see if it would work. I don't want to screw up this phone lol.
EDIT: Got it. Reflashed the recovery and had to reflash the ROM.
I don't know why a simple font change would screw ALL of that up. I don't want to keep flashing this ROM lol it has been about 4 times now.

I had the same thing when I flashed a power menu mod made for this phone but not for my OTA. Really weird thing is when I cleared the cache android booted did its upgrading thing and then restarted and went back to stuck at HTC logo.

You need to reflash what ever was on it. Hopefully you made a backup if not and were on stock find the correct nandroid back or RUU for your phone and flash that. You can also try doing a factory reset that may bring it back.
agreed...try to re-flash everything to stock than go from there to find what is causing the problem.
