Someone needs to put all these posts in order! and first of all establish a filing system! tags(well who puts tags?? maybe forced tick boxes) or brackets or something that will make it easier to find stuff!
That being said, can someone please point me to the official froyo for galaxy s? I cannot make kies work for some reason and I need to do it manually.
I have froyo but is either ****ed up, or beta, or something, cause it crashes like hell! Baseband version is I9000xxJP2
While you are at it, a guide on what is JPM, JP2, JP♥, etc is would be nice!
Thanks!
EDIT: I found one guide for installing 2.2 on the galaxy here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
Also try this website: http://www.samfirmware.com which has all the "official" firmware for Galaxy.
Still it would be nice to know about all the JP*versions...
There is no official froyo as yet. JPM and JP6 were briefly released earlier this month but they are by no means complete and still seem to have a number of issues. Samsung said that a new super fast official froyo release will be with us sometime in November. If you're brave enough you can try one of the releases available, I did recently, but I've gone back to JM1 that was supplied on my phone.
I know its an annoying and long wait but with any luck this will give Samsung the chance to get it right

Oh well, I thought the stuff they put up on their site was the official thing, and everyone is saying that they are rolling out froyo for the past couple of weeks...
it is VERY annoying, especially with all the good modders and coders that are around in xdadevs, and to be honest they prolly can build a froyo version much faster and cleaner than the "official" one....

Umm.. You do realise the modders here mostly take the Samsung code and enhance it right? Modding ROM's is a lot more difficult then writing/maintaining them (remember, the modders don't touch the drivers).
The situation does suck, but I actually respect many companies which delay releases more than those that don't. Because those that consistently deliver on schedule, often deliver their software with MAJOR issues (issues which may even require hardware to be returned for repair)
You can find here, on my PC:
c:\Users\Developer_007\.android\Froyo
FroYo for unbranded phones should be here early November. For carrier models Samsung have stated by the end of November. All we can do is play the waiting game. It gets delayed, delayed and delayed. Will probably get delayed till November, who knows?
Where you get information about november? Prooflink please!

Not overenthusiastic about Froyo.
Galaxy Tabs was released in Thailand a few weeks ago with official Froyo, played with it. The performance is subpar.

From what I've read there's a possibility the Japanese SGS is running slightly different hardware, has built in TV receiver and something different with the camera too

"We know you are all eagerly awaiting the Froyo updates, and we appreciate your patience. The network testing of the Galaxy S Froyo upgrade is proceeding according to the schedule we released last week (we expect all UK customers to receive their upgrade by the end of November). We can confirm that the software we’re working on includes a solution to the Froyo Android Market issue which has been widely discussed."

So, another month of waiting. Fantastic.
I'm curious if this will be also the case for the rest of Europe?
They just replied to a customer asking when in November and they said
We're releasing Froyo from the beginning of November and we're expecting all networks to have it by the end of November. The key benefits of Froyo will include Google maps with navigation, as well as improved browser performance.
In Singapore too. Samsung Singapore has said that they are almost done with the froyo 2.2 and it should be release on schedule! =)

So I am betting we do not get froyo before the end of the year. What I mean is the official release will not be this year. My question is, why is it that most of the other phones that can handle froyo already have had it for months, but Samsung is so behind and can't get it out the door?

Since nothing constructive can come out of this thread, I'll direct you toward a thread on another forum with the same topic being covered:

Hmm.. I'm going to still say before Christmas.
As it is now Samsung Epic has the official Froyo build from Samsung. So... one can only hope.
This thread is a waste:
1. Samsung still says by the End of Year we will have Froyo. They never said we would have it earlier - only the international i9000 was specified as November
2. Epic got a leaked release - it is not official Froyo. It may turn out to be, but there is not official annoucnement from Sprint or Samsung that Froyo has been released for the Epic.
People need to get facts straight. They may not be what anyone wants to hear, but they are the facts.

Google hosts all kinds of stuff. It could be any one of the Beta builds pushed out to testers OTA.
If it were official, don't you think Samsung and Sprint would be shouting about it?
One web site had this post:
"I don't think this is the real deal.t The only phones that got the OTA were one with a hardware version endind with .4 ,these are test phones. Every production Epic is a .5 phone. You can check your version by looking at (about phone) in the settings menu."
Although it is 2.2.1 - most sites are saying now it is most likely a leaked Dev build.
My 2c is that ATT couldn't really care less if they push out 2.2..so I doubt the Captivate will ever have an official upgrade to froyo..just too expensive in terms of R&D..remember, we're dealing with Ma Bell here-just under a different dress
HTC recently released a ROM update on their site for the AT$T Tilt 2. Info about it was nowhere to be found on the AT$T site. This is a phone that is no longer in production and near the end of its life cycle, but AT$T thought enough of it to release not only an updated ROM with fixes, but with the nicer Sense 2.5 UI instead of the original TF3D 2.1. I think a Froyo update from AT$T for our phones will eventually come.
I'm still shooting for St. Patrick's Day, around the end of Q1.
More than two months have passed since the last news about NOOKColor getting official Froyo update with Flash, blackjack and nookers appeared in the Internet, and still no signs of it on B&N site or other reliable source.
Was it just a hoax, or I'm simply bad at googling good news?
B&N has never really officially gave an official time or announcement for a froyo update. Everything out there so far has been rumor, so it is hard to say what will really happen.
Out of curiosity, I just sent an enquiry to HTC UK about when they might be officially updating the device to 2.3.3 or a subsequent version. Here's the answer I got:
"Thank you very much for contacting the HTC technical support help desk. We are excited to announce that HTC Incredible will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Summer 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability. Please, for HTC INCREDIBLE S downloads and useful information about your device goes to: http://www.htc.com/uk/help_howtos.aspx?p_id=389"
I don't know about all of you, but this disappoints me - the Desire S is about to be released and yet that will be shipping with 2.3.3. And 'Summer'? That could easily be as late as September. This is all starting to sound very similar to the last time I was burned by HTC when I had a Hero and I was hanging around for 6 months waiting for a 2.x update from Android 1.5.
Anyway, I've told them I don't think this is good enough. I just hope someone finds a root exploit soon so there's a chance of me keeping vaguely up to date with new Android versions. Otherwise I'm going to be more and more tempted to sell this thing on later in the year and find something a bit more update-friendly.
to be honest, that just sound like the marketing department haven't been told anything, and that is a safe, wide target area, I wouldn't read too much into it.
I too suffered the Hero saga, don't want a repeat of that

I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to release an update within the next month or so, rather than 'Summer'. It's the vagueness that concerns me more than anything else!
Also, am I right in thinking that all Incredible S models ship without any carrier/network specific branding or functions within the software? I'm hopeful that will cut down the time it takes to build and release the update.
I think the update comes in May or June the latest. You figure this phone is gone be in Canada on Virgin and Bell sometime early April and in the states on Verizon at the end of April. I figure once the phone is more widely available the update will come. If we are lucky maybe the official gingerbread rom for the Incredible S gets leaked in April.
According to Engadget Chinese (during the press conference of Desire S announcement in Taiwan), hTC representative suggested that Gingerbread for Incredible S would be available "in next 2 weeks". Considering European countries always get the OTA update earlier than Asia Pacific region (Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z, Aria, Legend...). If the news is true, UK should probably get the update in April.
And also they announced a partnership with Skype to provide customized version of Skype in 2.3 update to include video call ability, which is a great news for us. Just hope this Skype version works better than the one in Market...

I had similar bs answer from them..
my enquiry was that as I purchased the phone sim/ carrier free, and it is the carriers who will release the update..which carrier sim wld I need to be using to get it?
in fact the reply bypassed the question completely, saying just 'most carriers wld release the updat (really htc? so do i have to use a sim from a carrier that supports IS???)...and then went on to say 'what is more important is that when the OTA is released by your carrier, make sure you are using wifi to download..
All I wanted was straight answer like 'O2 will def be releasing the update, it doesnt come direct from us, and expect it in xyz'..
HTC havent even released it to carriers yet, so when they do that'l take another couple of months for them to tamper with it..HTC obviously have a finished product which works with sense ui as they've been parading it around on the Desire S..so must be ready for release before now.

More likely than not, the official update will get leaked anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about that if you're lurking here as you'll probably see it here first. I'm on 3 in the UK who definitely don't support this phone, so this is what I'll probably be relying on unless the update comes direct from HTC. I wouldn't rely on HTC support to know where it's coming from, they're clearly as much in the dark as we are but have to give an answer of some kind. They don't count on people actually being clued up already, sadly.
I agree that if the Desire S is getting it, we should be getting it soon, but I do understand if there's a short delay due to it having to be tested fully on differing hardware. It's just the vagueness and the timescale that gets to me.
if the official update does get leaked, could it be installed without root?
update def won't be from HTC direct, thats the one thing they are adamant about..your's is a perfect example of a carrier that therefore wouldnt be releasing the update..and as for the clowns at 3 dont get me started..I had a DHD from 3, contacted them about a ginbgerbread update and they just told me they were'nt doing it and that 2.1 was the latest version 3 had...erm, hello 3..i bought the phone from your shop with 2.2 already on it!
glad i got rid of my dhd tho...IS is tons better
Any body know when oficial gingerbread relase ?
today is april7
I heard that a quasi-official representative for a PR company that works with Samsung posted a leaked email on their Facebook page last month, which had been translated from Finnish by a Croatian living in Tripoli.
This clearly suggested that Gingerbread would probably be "officially, more or less" released for some Galaxy S i9000 models (the T and the W, but not the B or M or the ultra rare C~ variant, as well as for International models released in landlocked countries) on "around about the twelfth of Neverwas, or 5 days before the fifth full moon in August...give or take a few equinoxes either way".
...IN short, no one knows anything for sure. Just lots of hearsay.
I have the twelfth of never from a reliable sauce .

Samsung tests in advance of the upgrade is now completely in the final stages, and in the middle of April rolled out the upgrade for mobile that is not linked to specific operators. In mid-May is also the Android 2.3 made available for operator-specific phones.
The upgrade will be available through Samsung's software Samsung Kies.
