I have been using GoTo for quite a while. I love the way it looks and some of the functionality it rings. But, I've been a bit frustrated with how slow it opens to the phone when I slide the unlock.
I have quite a few apps on my phone and it has been getting pretty slow.
I took GoTo off a bit ago, and of course the default screen locker is pretty fast, and it seems the phone is not having all the lags it had. This certainly may be a premature analysis. Time will tell.
So, I was reading another post here that mentioned Widgetlocker, which looks very interesting. But I just looked at teh reviews and notice in the initial 3 that come up that one person said it was good except for how slow it unlocks.
So that brings me to open this thread. Are you using a 3rd party locker? Does it unlock quickly, or slow? Has your phone slowed down? Have you tried removing the locker to see how it works?
I like the idea of having a locker that can give me some locked screen functionality, like Widgetlocker does, and to a lesser extent GoTo.
I'm curious what you folks are seeing and using.
I tried lockbot, which I didn't like and definitely lagged my phone up. I bought widgetlocker and love it. I have the beautiful home widget and a slider for camera/brightness and another one for unlock/sound-vibrate-silent, like the froyo lock screen. It's not 100% smooth in sliding any of them but it's quick enough and definitely isn't coming off the phone anytime soon.
I tried both LockBot and Lock 2.0 trying to find a lock screen app that would allow me to have a seperate lock screen wallpaper, and while they did the trick I also found them to be very slow. I hated the delay between turning the phone on and the lock screen actually appearing.

I can recommend Widget Locker too, it's smooth and has great functionality.
I use Widget Locker too. The sliders are not consistently smooth but it always unlocks the phone fine. My guess is that is sacrifices some of that smoothness for responsiveness.
You can add widgets, change how the unlock looks, and have different wallpapers too.
I may try Widgetlocker. Looks interesting. I did see some reviews of it slowing things down.
I'll have to do it when I can do some tests in time for the 24 hour refund if I don't want to keep it.

Just removed WidgetLocker from my phone. At first it was responsive and worked great. Then it just started giving me problems opening and re-locking right away (frustrating).
It is great when it works good. I really liked having Smooth Calendar, battery widget and a different clock than my home screen. It's good enough I may just have to give it one more try.
Sorry about bringing a dead thread back but can anyone confirm that any of the app lag fixes would help the performance of the lock screen apps. Thanks
I did some tests with quadrant with GoTo installed, and without. Unfortunately I lost my notes, but it definitely was slower with it installed.I have stopped using it, although I would love to use it.

Thanks for the info
I did the one step internal memory lagfix and now Widgetlocker unlocks smoothly each time I do it and there's no delay when I power the screen up. It's win!

was going to come in here and post the exact same thing, mine was nice and smooth because i had cleaned up my stock rom. but once i did the 1gig internal memory lag fix my widget locker runs smoother than even my nexus one oem screen lock did. its VERY fast and always on target
There's several fixes out there. I don't recall what mine is called but I did the one where I move the DATA to a different memory, and it has made a world of difference. It was after doing that that I did all the tests with Quadrant and verified that GoTo slows things down.
While wiht this fix it performs much better, given the overall hit it puts, I have left it off. I may give it another try.
I'd consider Widget Locker...but have to purchase, and I may not be able to decide about it in 24 hours.

I would really appreciate some help. I just received my Sprint HTC CDMA Hero and when I flip it to landscape it literally takes 3-4 seconds to transition. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to remedy the problem? It is NOT rooted. Thank you for your help...
This is a very normal transition time... I'm running DarchDroid ant it takes at least three seconds to transition.
Root. And you can fix that.
I run zenxp overclocked, and it takes less than half that time. Don't think it can ever be instantaneous, though.
Running Aloysius 2.1 and it takes maybe 2 seconds at most.
Here's a tip. Download an app called Bubble by Ben Zibble from the market. Set it on a level surface on it's back and hit menu> calibrate. Then set the phone on it's side and hit calibrate again, then position it upright and calibrate it a third time. Your rotation will now be much faster.

That would calibrate the sensor for the app. Not the whole phone. Its just telling the bubbles, when the phone is like this, make the bubble go here. Not if the bubble is here, set the internal phone sensor to think its here.
Mine was slow as Christmas until I rooted and loaded a custom ROM.
If you don't want to do that then at least get the auto task killer from the market (free) and set it to help you. Also, if you are running stock 2.1 I'd disable your stock SMS app and use Handcent SMS. Turn off your GPS and turn off your Vibrate when typing. What tends to happen is that your phone will be doing A LOT in the background and it lags like your CPU would if you were running 10 programs at once. That is what the auto killer does, it kills stuff and keeps your phone running fast.
But I really recommend rooting and installing a custom ROM. I am not a developer, know little to nothing about linux, and I figured it out with the help of this forum. Everything you want to do has a step by step listed here. It is a great resource and you won't belive how much better your HERO will be with the custom ROMS.
I took mine to the Sprint store and ran it side by side with the Evo and honestly there isn't much the EVO can do that my Hero can't.

One would think that, but it actually reduces the wait time to transition from portrait to landscape. It was discussed in a previous thread a while ago.

Holy ****. This rom is AMAZING! If we could get the camera fixed for optimum performance, that'd be fantastic.
trying to enable wifi makes it reboot
if that could get fixed i think i would use this mainly... it just feels so fresh and new
Thanks IncDoes!
Thanks! Been wating to try this even with the known bugs
Also, i imagine aosp kernels for this, right?
This really does have a lot of potential.. I hope some one takes it over...
Thanks id! It's really cool, but I am also getting a bootloop when I enable wifi

I see theirs bug (as with any ROM) but will be watching this. Hope someone picks this up. It could be EPIC.
Sweet rom.
As others have pointed out.
Phone reboots when turning on wifi.
No verizon apps in market.
No TV Out
Ill be watching this rom closely .. I like what im seeing so far

Gave this ROM a brief run noticed the following bugs:
As noted before, wifi forces a reboot. Weather service isn't reporting correctly, neither is GPS. Camera appears to work till you actually try to use it. Force closes after a few taps. Noticed that the ROM is sluggish performance wise, but this is likely due to all the other bugs. Really hope a dev takes this one up, definitely has a lot of potential.
It was a brief and fun escape from MIUI, but this ROM doesn't stack up. The lockscreen is the best part. Aside from the bugs, the ui is not very intuitive. Acer almost tried too hard to be different. Takes too many taps to get some things done. For example, you have to long press the home button to access the widgets, and then swipe to the one you want. The actual home screen is very limited in what can be on it. It's almost as if there are two ui's stacked atop one another.
Btw, I tried a different kernel. I think it actually installed properly, but the kernel didn't update in 'settings'.

Wow this is amazing... Great work
Works much better with launcherpro. The stock launcher is sorta bogus even though is fun to show off to other people.
This way you get a good home launcher and that awesome lockscreen.
I'm finding the same things that all of you are, although I've tinkered with mine to the point that it won't re-boot past the "acer" screen. I did a full wipe (dalvik, cache, setting) and I'm back into the setup screens.
So here is my situation...
First, what I want:
I txt a lot, don't really call much. I want an extremely fast ROM. Light weight (I don't run many apps at all, Pandora, and uh...well thats about it), and not heavy on the theme. I'm happy with Helix launcher.
I also want the HTC dialer, I hate all the other dialers. I want the HTC dialer because I press numbers to spell names to call people. Only other dialer I found that does that is DialerPro or some garbage.
My problem:
My HERO is very very very very slow. With Pandora running sometimes it just locks up completely while still playing music.
If I am getting a txt or have justt sent one, there is a 5-10 second lag in the phone doing anything or responding at all.
Sometimes I can't unlock it, I try to draw the pattern and it doesn't pick up my touch Until half way through the pattern. This is the same with Swype, sometimes it doesn't pick up my swype until half way through, or sometimes it just ends it early.
Its really driving me insane. I don't honestly see how anybody would ever keep this phone if it was acting like this for everyone else. Sometimes I have to make calls in a hurry (God forbid I ever need to dial 911) and the phone just sits there and locks up, or lags horribly and skips numbers, or just force closes almost everything.
I have tried many roms. Currently I am on the CM6 2.2 (inb4 experimental) but I'm willing to try others. I have had the SAME problems on other roms.
I have also tried changing phones and have the same exact freezing and lagging issues.
So please, suggest a rom that is very light weight, allows me to use the HTC Dialer, and doesn't freeze all the damn time.

Not really one out there... for speed and lightweight I recommend aospMOD, but you'd have to give up the dialer. There's always dialer one, which is similar though
Do you use autokiller? Usually when people have similar problems to yours they don't run autokiller and when they do their problems go away. Give it a try. I would say aggressive setting in your case.

CM6 will fix all your lag, but you'd have to sacrifice your dialer. Are you sure you can't find a third party dialer that works for you?
Sense is very resource-heavy on any phone, so AOSP is type best bet.

Agreed, and dialer one can pick up some of that sense-like feel
If you really want the speed and responsiveness, you are likely going to have to leave Sense behind. Like others have said, an ASOP-based ROM (such as ASOPmod or CM6.1) would be the best bet. If you tried CM6 in the past, give CM6.1 a shot. At least for me, the move from 2.2 to 2.2.1 was a DRAMATIC improvement in the fluidity of the phone's responsiveness and 'feel'. Smooth as silk and buttery on top.
If possible, pair this up with a modestly overclocked kernel. I personally use Decad3nce's latest (11/12/10) CFS 768mhz kernel clocked @ 729 via the Deca battery mod. Once you set up the ROM, kernel, and battery mod - you should be golden.
Also of note, I do use LauncherPro, and run with JIT enabled and all the CM performance tweaks in place except for CompCache, which I leave disabled.
Good luck in your endeavors to remove the lag from your Hero - don't worry, it's definitely possible!
I don't know if anybody else is having the same problems. I had the 1.3ghz kernel with cm7 on my nook for a long time, and it was super stable. It never freezed on me or anything. But now, with the new .32 kernel that we have to use for the newest nightlies, my nook is freezing up all the time. Does anyone know when Dal is gonna update his kernel?
I agree. I get periodic freezes with .32. Hoping for an update because otherwise it works very well. Much improved power management and battery life from .29.
I just went from 7.0.2, to nightly eighty-seven. Using the 1.2GHz 5/23 OC kernel. I did not wipe data/system, only formatted cache/Delvik-cache.
I'm seeing a SIGNIFICANT increase in system performance, screen and window transitions mainly, also App launches seem slightly faster. Which surprises me because I run alot of memory/processor heavy widgets with my system settings tailored for quality. I would venture saying an almost two-fold increase in reaction time and general snappyness. I'm also no longer getting startup FC'S on boot, and just better general app stability
Before, I was unable to get the 1.2GHz OC working with the 2.6.29 kernel. The nook would either crash on startup or shortly after. Not a single crash since making the upgrade to 2.6.32 and the corresponding OS upgrade. I'm sure this speed increase is playing its fair share in my performance observations.
One of us might be experiencing an atypical situation. it's hard to say, especially with being in the middle of an 'official' kernel upgrade and rollout.
Sent from my Nook color using Tapatalk
.32 kernel works here rock solid - no freezes.
I tend to get lock ups when waking up my device, then it tells me ADWLauncher isn't responding and have to wait a while before it comes back to life. Only started happening after moving to the .32 kernel and nightly #87.
Yeah It seems like its a hit and miss for some people. Something weird is definitely going on here. Mine freezes A LOT and often in the first 30 seconds of start-up, which leaves me having to turn the Nook Color on and off many times before getting it to finally work. I never had this problem with the .29 overclock kernel before. When we had the 925mhz OC included in the older nightlies, mine would always freeze. When we had the 1.3ghz .29 kernel, mine was rock solid. Now with the .32 kernel at 1.2ghz, it freeezes. Its an endless cycle lol.
I had significant and frequent system freezes that I finally narrowed down to a widget. Try removing Widgets to see if that helps. If you find the culprit, uninstall then reinstall.

This is my next aspect on tracking down SOD; apps.... Good idea though, one easy way to do this is install a secondary launcher and use it for a while with no widgets, especially if you're like me and have like a dozen widgets. Otherwise yeah just remove 'em and see what happens.
Widgets for no day though? Gah

Which widget? I am pondering creating another form for folks to fill out, this time based on the Widgets I have.. but that'll be difficult to track down really..

k, yeah, don't use BW.. I use.... a bunch of others though.
I tried getting rid of all of my widgets... No dice though. Didn't make any difference for me, still pretty unstable. I'm really hoping for an update soon... I'm worried though cuz I think Dal said a while ago that he wasn't gonna work on it for a while cuz its pretty much finished lol
Bad Theme
speaking of widgets, last week after a reboot because of SOD my nook had a bad case of FCs with ADW trying to load my widgets. after trying lots of different things I finally got it back up and running. after trial and error I figured out it was the theme that I was using in fancy widgets pro. I uninstall and re-download it and all is well again. so be careful, its not just the widget. make sure to also check the theme.
Yeah I thought it might be that also, so I changed to the default theme and used the default cm7 wallpaper. Still no luck. I'm pretty confident this issue has something to do with the kernel
I've unlocked, installed CWM, rooted it, installed busybox via the busybox installer from the market (which requires root), however titanium tells me that the SU command fails and I should attempt to re-root my device
Where should I go from here before I break something?
Thanks
UPDATE:
Never mind, booted into recovery, reinstalled VIVID_CWM_ROOT_VER2.zip all is good
had the same drama at first nice fix how are you finding the phone???
So fair I am impressed with the speed, I have not used 4G yet, its not available in my area yes, but its light years ahead of all the other handsets here even on 3G.
Physically I was expecting it to be heavier, and coming from a HTC HD2, the lock and volume buttons are perfectly positioned so that I accidentally press them all the time as they are in opposite of what I am used to and its the same width but 1 cm taller, which means I can no longer use my leather belt pouch I miss having a physical hangup and separate physical answer key which through the circumstances of its birth (WinMo 6.5) the HD2 was blessed with. Build quality on the MicroSD card slot is lacking, it could have been made better. I also miss being able to hot-swap the microsd card as I could in the HD2, instead I have to pull the battery which is annoying.
Software wise, I gotta say that I am REALLY missing MIUI, Sense is very pretty but I find it is not really what I am looking for and its quite clunky in comparison to MIUI... and I hate how it squashes down widgets for no reason at all. I will probably play around with AWD or LauncherPro in the meantime, I'm also not really a fan of the ringpull unlock screen but I'm sure I will get used to it in time. I noticed that the VIVID and RAIDER have sense 3.0, where as the Velocity has Sense 3.5... maybe ROM people can yank a clean build from the Telstra build along with teeter
BlueTooth - Works Great, Syncs INSTANTLY with my car, never skips on A2DP, works great.
Wifi - Works fantastically
Games work great on it, I'm cranking away with my PSX emulator (FPSE) and GTA III runs good, I was originally disappointed it didn't run better but after I reduced the draw distance in the game settings it was good, I think I had too many apps running as well. I installed ATK to take care of that and the phone is much better after I have ATK autorun every hour and clean up background apps.
Battery life I can't tell because I have been using it almost the entire time and it melts through it pretty fast, I'd give it a week of normal day to day use before I really give a verdict on it, I do have the screen at 100% brightness all the time which doesn't help, and I already have an extended battery in the mail. I sync 2 gmail accounts and an exchange account, all in push, and I just leave BT and WIFI on all the time as I like just jumping in the car and it works, or getting home and already being on the wifi.
Overall I give it a 6 out of 10 so far, with CM7 or CM9 and MIUI that would quickly elevate to an 8 out of 10, with all the space inside the phone, the size of the standard battery is disappointing, they could have put one almost twice the size in there if they arranged the sim and microsd slots better.
The biggest problem is that I was really spoiled with the HTC HD2, I'd say 90% of my gripes with the phone are with sense, I find it ugly and clunky and I wish HTC had just left android alone... I don't have an issue with gingerbread, I haven't used ICS yet and I'm in no busting rush. As soon as the ROM community grows up for this phone it will be amazing, until then its kinda meh.

Cool trick. It doesn't break anything? I remember doing something similar on my Desire and I couldn't dismiss alarms (ugh) or answer calls, I'd have to do a battery pull.
(also, I think you need to be rooted to disable the stock lockscreen in WidgetLocker, so maybe it's essentially doing the same thing; alarms/calls work fine on my Vivid with it disabled, so maybe I'm answering my own question)

Ah yes found it, settings > advanced > disable stock lock.
it warns that this will make any of the physical keys wake the device, I'm cool with that
Yeah, I actually like waking my phone with the volume buttons sometimes, depending on how I end up grabbing it in my jacket pocket. And it's not like they unlock the phone; I have WidgetLocker set to only have a 15-second timeout, overriding the normal display timeout, so I'm not too worried about accidental battery drain.
