The .32 kernel is less stable than .29? - Nook Color General

I don't know if anybody else is having the same problems. I had the 1.3ghz kernel with cm7 on my nook for a long time, and it was super stable. It never freezed on me or anything. But now, with the new .32 kernel that we have to use for the newest nightlies, my nook is freezing up all the time. Does anyone know when Dal is gonna update his kernel?

I agree. I get periodic freezes with .32. Hoping for an update because otherwise it works very well. Much improved power management and battery life from .29.

I just went from 7.0.2, to nightly eighty-seven. Using the 1.2GHz 5/23 OC kernel. I did not wipe data/system, only formatted cache/Delvik-cache.
I'm seeing a SIGNIFICANT increase in system performance, screen and window transitions mainly, also App launches seem slightly faster. Which surprises me because I run alot of memory/processor heavy widgets with my system settings tailored for quality. I would venture saying an almost two-fold increase in reaction time and general snappyness. I'm also no longer getting startup FC'S on boot, and just better general app stability
Before, I was unable to get the 1.2GHz OC working with the 2.6.29 kernel. The nook would either crash on startup or shortly after. Not a single crash since making the upgrade to 2.6.32 and the corresponding OS upgrade. I'm sure this speed increase is playing its fair share in my performance observations.
One of us might be experiencing an atypical situation. it's hard to say, especially with being in the middle of an 'official' kernel upgrade and rollout.

.32 kernel works here rock solid - no freezes.

I tend to get lock ups when waking up my device, then it tells me ADWLauncher isn't responding and have to wait a while before it comes back to life. Only started happening after moving to the .32 kernel and nightly #87.

Yeah It seems like its a hit and miss for some people. Something weird is definitely going on here. Mine freezes A LOT and often in the first 30 seconds of start-up, which leaves me having to turn the Nook Color on and off many times before getting it to finally work. I never had this problem with the .29 overclock kernel before. When we had the 925mhz OC included in the older nightlies, mine would always freeze. When we had the 1.3ghz .29 kernel, mine was rock solid. Now with the .32 kernel at 1.2ghz, it freeezes. Its an endless cycle lol.

I had significant and frequent system freezes that I finally narrowed down to a widget. Try removing Widgets to see if that helps. If you find the culprit, uninstall then reinstall.

This is my next aspect on tracking down SOD; apps.... Good idea though, one easy way to do this is install a secondary launcher and use it for a while with no widgets, especially if you're like me and have like a dozen widgets. Otherwise yeah just remove 'em and see what happens.
Widgets for no day though? Gah

Exactly what I did, in fact. Moved to ADW for a while with no Widgets. At first I suspected the launcher then realized it was a widget when I later added the widget and immediately experienced a freeze.

Which widget? I am pondering creating another form for folks to fill out, this time based on the Widgets I have.. but that'll be difficult to track down really..

Beautiful Widgets: Beautiful Home Weather.
Other BW widgets seem to work ok, though I've not tested them all.

k, yeah, don't use BW.. I use.... a bunch of others though.

I tried getting rid of all of my widgets... No dice though. Didn't make any difference for me, still pretty unstable. I'm really hoping for an update soon... I'm worried though cuz I think Dal said a while ago that he wasn't gonna work on it for a while cuz its pretty much finished lol

Bad Theme
speaking of widgets, last week after a reboot because of SOD my nook had a bad case of FCs with ADW trying to load my widgets. after trying lots of different things I finally got it back up and running. after trial and error I figured out it was the theme that I was using in fancy widgets pro. I uninstall and re-download it and all is well again. so be careful, its not just the widget. make sure to also check the theme.

Yeah I thought it might be that also, so I changed to the default theme and used the default cm7 wallpaper. Still no luck. I'm pretty confident this issue has something to do with the kernel

Home reload / loading

I've had this happen more than a few times and seemingly at random intervals with both stock and custom (Cyanogen) firmware using normal Home and Open Home. I'll go from an app to Home and the screen will flick to the Home screen but with only the app drawer followed two or three seconds later by what is actually on that screen loading then appearing. I thought it would be a RAM issue that would vanish when I started using the linux swap file on custom firmware but no, I still get it. Once or twice a day I could tolerate but not once or twice every four or more app launches.
I've used Task Killer free to close those programs that forget to close / don't want to close but it still happens. Is it something I'm going to have to live with? I've used the Hero ROM floating around quite a lot and that doesn't suffer from this issue half as much.
Cyan's latest (3.9.7) has advanced launcher which need more ram that's why it's happening. Also, openhome is a resource hog, I don't know why would you be using it anyway. How many widgets are you running? Widgets contribute to the problem greatly. All in all, I have that same problem too.. it's just something we have to live with for the time being... I'm sure Cyan will fix it in his next release or two. n If you're inclined to do so... you can push regular launcher.apk from stable rom... that may sort things out.

It sounds like a combination of 3.9.7, widgets and open home. I run around six widgets, three of those are photo frames. With regards to Open Home... I was young and naive (pre-root) and couldn't stand the dull look of normal Android. Hero has a much nicer look to me. I know it's odd but on a Hero ROM I run around seven widgets although two of those are to toggle WiFi and GPS. Still, at least I've got some idea of what to check now. Thanks for the heads-up!

3rd Party Screen Locks-> Slow you phone down?

I have been using GoTo for quite a while. I love the way it looks and some of the functionality it rings. But, I've been a bit frustrated with how slow it opens to the phone when I slide the unlock.
I have quite a few apps on my phone and it has been getting pretty slow.
I took GoTo off a bit ago, and of course the default screen locker is pretty fast, and it seems the phone is not having all the lags it had. This certainly may be a premature analysis. Time will tell.
So, I was reading another post here that mentioned Widgetlocker, which looks very interesting. But I just looked at teh reviews and notice in the initial 3 that come up that one person said it was good except for how slow it unlocks.
So that brings me to open this thread. Are you using a 3rd party locker? Does it unlock quickly, or slow? Has your phone slowed down? Have you tried removing the locker to see how it works?
I like the idea of having a locker that can give me some locked screen functionality, like Widgetlocker does, and to a lesser extent GoTo.
I'm curious what you folks are seeing and using.
I tried lockbot, which I didn't like and definitely lagged my phone up. I bought widgetlocker and love it. I have the beautiful home widget and a slider for camera/brightness and another one for unlock/sound-vibrate-silent, like the froyo lock screen. It's not 100% smooth in sliding any of them but it's quick enough and definitely isn't coming off the phone anytime soon.
I tried both LockBot and Lock 2.0 trying to find a lock screen app that would allow me to have a seperate lock screen wallpaper, and while they did the trick I also found them to be very slow. I hated the delay between turning the phone on and the lock screen actually appearing.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I can recommend Widget Locker too, it's smooth and has great functionality.
I use Widget Locker too. The sliders are not consistently smooth but it always unlocks the phone fine. My guess is that is sacrifices some of that smoothness for responsiveness.
You can add widgets, change how the unlock looks, and have different wallpapers too.
I may try Widgetlocker. Looks interesting. I did see some reviews of it slowing things down.
I'll have to do it when I can do some tests in time for the 24 hour refund if I don't want to keep it.

Just removed WidgetLocker from my phone. At first it was responsive and worked great. Then it just started giving me problems opening and re-locking right away (frustrating).
It is great when it works good. I really liked having Smooth Calendar, battery widget and a different clock than my home screen. It's good enough I may just have to give it one more try.
Sorry about bringing a dead thread back but can anyone confirm that any of the app lag fixes would help the performance of the lock screen apps. Thanks
I did some tests with quadrant with GoTo installed, and without. Unfortunately I lost my notes, but it definitely was slower with it installed.I have stopped using it, although I would love to use it.

I did the one step internal memory lagfix and now Widgetlocker unlocks smoothly each time I do it and there's no delay when I power the screen up. It's win!

was going to come in here and post the exact same thing, mine was nice and smooth because i had cleaned up my stock rom. but once i did the 1gig internal memory lag fix my widget locker runs smoother than even my nexus one oem screen lock did. its VERY fast and always on target
There's several fixes out there. I don't recall what mine is called but I did the one where I move the DATA to a different memory, and it has made a world of difference. It was after doing that that I did all the tests with Quadrant and verified that GoTo slows things down.
While wiht this fix it performs much better, given the overall hit it puts, I have left it off. I may give it another try.
I'd consider Widget Locker...but have to purchase, and I may not be able to decide about it in 24 hours.

what happens when sense is flushed from memory?

Well first is that even possible? If it is then what is the result?
I am curious because lately my phone has been resetting itself (I don't mean a full reboot, but rather sense seems to be reloading. I am not really sure how to describe it but it is kind of like in windows when you log off and and log back in and windows restarts but you don't go through the whole post test) At first I thought maybe it was an app messing up and then I thought maybe it was the rom itself messing up, but now I am thinking that maybe sense is being flushed from memory and when that happens it needs to reload.
Any thoughts?

OK so you are basically confirming my latest suspicion. I like the clock (with the weather and effects) widget to much get rid of it.
What would cause sense to reset itself?
(If I don't use sense then does that mean I lose all my flickr and facebook syncing?)

do you know of any aosp roms with sense besides alysius?
If you download beautiful widgets you can get the sense looking clock and there are several widgets to replace the sense ones. Some HTC apps and widgets have not been mimicked yet. Launcher Pro Plus has a contatcs and one other widget available now and he is working on making more like HTC's. I really like launcher pro and run it instead of sense if I run a rom with sense, which is not very often. I have been running darchdroid or CM6 most of the time and do not miss sense.
You might try reflashing the ROM you are using without a wipe and see if that fixes it.

Will reflashing have any effect on apps2sd
I wish all apps had a free or trial version so I could sample them before having to commit to any money. Beautiful widgets does it mimic the weather effects of HTCs clock/weather widget?

What rom and kernel are you using, those new OC/UV kernels are known to cause this and so are task killers?

I am using Aloysuis 2.1.2; the restarts occur in both the 2.1.2 and the 6-29 update. The kernel is listed as being: 2.6.29-d30020a8 [email protected] #1
I am not using any task killers other then autokiller (which came with the rom and allows you to set memory levels on when the phone will start various apps e.g. empty app, content provider, and hidden. I currently have it set to the optimum preset which has the following levels set: hidden app: 40, content provider: 50, empty app: 60
Being that I know believe sense is restarting in spare parts I have "home app in memory" checked but I don't think this has any real effect on the problem.

Phone being too slow

I understand there are many lag fixes, but i think my issue may be past that
My SGS is very very sluggish lately and was before
I'm constantly finding myself at 100% cpu usage (finding out from android system info app) and its making the phone so sluggish, not only is it embarrasing to hold in my hand... but makes me think about suicide (even my htc vogue wasn't this bad)
Reason i even go close to saying the htc vogue comment is, if my vogue lagged... i would press the reset button.. and quick boot back up and all would be well.. but the SGS once after i remove battery and put it back in, it still has very sluggish boot time and isn't as smooth as before
I AM on the latest firmware btw... this is the info i grabbed from Android System Info
The process is android.process.acore (using 100%) which comes from package org.adw.launcher
The EXACT same thing happened with Launcher Pro which is why i tried adw launcher... i thought it might've been launcher pro to begin with, which is why i did the switch.. but now im having same problem
First launcher pro, now adw
I'm guessing the problem is something else..
-- is this lag the one everyone seems to be having? Hence the "lagfixes?"
I applied Ryans lag fix via apk and no difference at all
Is there a way i can dump log / info / apps so maybe we can trace this down?
I LOVE the phone and constantly show off its abilities, but lately its been doing this and making me look like a jackass haha
Appreciate the help!
What's is your quadrant result? But the 100% cpu is abnormal, you need to solve that first.
Did you get that when if you use the touchwiz launcher?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
touchwiz is smaller.. but I'm currently waiting for it to get to that point of lag again (probably in another hour or two) and i'll manually kill adw and launch touchwiz to see how it works
I just ran quadrant with 1808 and i got error while it was showing my result saying internal error during benchmark execution with a close button
I did it again.. got 2198 but same error
... Before i used to get 2200 and before lagfix it was 880
I'll wait for the 100% lag (i just rebooted) and try again and update
Which firmware are you running?
Sounds like you need to do a reflash and format. Try giving jm1 rev.3 a shot as that is by far the best fw to date.
The latest stable firmware on kies, or from here?
From Kies... JH2
I'm on Bell btw, got the GT-I9000M
Toss3: I guess if there aren't any ideas, i'll do a full backup with titanium... and try reflash/format and see how that works... if not its either phone hardware wise or some app that i have
Sounds like a homescreen widget that is doing a ton of processing and pushing your CPU up to 100%. It believe would show up under the launcher, cause widgets run on the homescreen.
that is also one of my theories.. just dont know the easiest way to figure out what it is..
only way i can think is to delete all and slowly add one by one

You don't need to delete all, you can't have too many widgets that could potentially be burning that much CPU, although if you do that'd be my place to start .
Think about it logically... Widgets that need to poll data (facebook/twitter/RSS) and widgets that use a lot of RAM (anything pretty/animated). My inclination is that you have something set to poll very frequently (1min) that is also trying to pull a lot of data at a time so that its not finishing one full pull before it starts the next one.
If that still doesn't do the trick do a backup and reflash (even to the same FW version is fine) and set it up with the absolute bare minimum of widget and homescreens. See if the problem remains with NOTHING, which it shouldn't, then refill over the course of a few days.
Alternatively, you could just try autokiller on agressive. Your problem is obviously coming from an errant process that you aren't knowingly using. Don't see why autokiller won't keep it stomped down.
i dont have any widget with a low update frequency
i have facebook.. vlingo button.. beautiful home and weather... pure calendar.. stock youtube. . google search. batterylife and a brightness toggle
the rest are just contact or app shortcuts
ive tried killing widget processes as well but that hasnt done much help
today ill experiment a bit more though
The phone is really testing my patience though, constantly having full UI lock ups

[Q] Xperia Active/Arc launcher (and a little problem I have with Active)

Hi,
I've recently installed Xperia Active Launcher on my FroyoPro v2.5, and I love it. However, I've been having some performance issues with it that I would like to fix.
First off, I installed a system CPU monitor to see how much CPU percentage my system uses on average. When I unlock the screen, CPU averages at about 40 %, and in time if I was to do nothing it slows down below 10 %. If I was to swipe around the pages, it averages at about 30%.
If I was to run a too big of a game for the little Xperia to handle, naturally CPU jumps to close to 100%, but the lag it causes is constant. The game just slows down a bit in rate but there are no freeze-screen type of lags.
However, if I was to run Google Play Store (and this is the only app that seems to be critical to the system), the CPU jumps very high in percentage, and it even on occasion crashes the Xperia Active Launcher. I get a message that says Sony Ericsson home is not responding, and I get the option of either to wait or force close. Then the launcher breaks and reruns itself, reloading every single shortcut and widget.
So, how normal does this seem to you? Is there a workaround or should I ditch the Active Launcher and replace it with something else instead? Because I really like the look of the original stock ROM.
Also, while at it, is there any difference at all in performance between the Arc and Active launchers? Because they quite look the same. But perhaps there are modded versions out there that seem to be running better on the X8?
You should use the modded active launcher.
Also you can use nemus launcher.
Its very smooth.
If you want its link click on my sig. And go to must have apps thread.
And yes there is a diff b/w arc and active launcher in terms of memory usage.
Arc launcher consumes more memory.(based on my experiences)

The Nemus launcher does look really good. Even though I really like the corners that Xperia Active Launcher offers, and the overall stock ROM feel, I think that eventually performance would have to come first. The Nemus launcher looks very optimized and fast.
Is there a link you can provide to a better performing Active Launcher, the one that is modded? All I've found so far is a number of threads with same versions of Active Launchers, and a single Arc Launcher thread with numerous modded Arc Launchers (this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325108). I'll probably take another shot at trying the modded Active one and then decide if switching is necessary.
BTW, I pressed Thanks
Good to see that i helped you.
No luck in finding a smoother Active Launcher, but i did find this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040668
What do you guys think, would this work with the Active launcher making it more smooth for our little phone? Also, is it the same as the "Lock home in memory" setting in CM settings?
BTW, the Nemus launcher is reaaaally smooth. I'm using it as a daily launcher while still trying something for the Active launcher here and there.
EDIT: Ticking "Lock home in memory" seems to have fixed the crashes. I need more time to see if it did the trick. Also, the phone activates much faster at the lock screen.
Using supercharger with hard to kill option enabled will prevent launcher redraws.

I'm surprised I never heard about this. I would love to install it, but beforehand I would have to install a newer version of BusyBox. My version is 1.15.3. I've read somewhere that if you install a different version of BusyBox after you flash a new ROM that there is a good possibility of hardbricking the phone? How true is this for FroyoPro and is it safe to do?
EDIT: I've noticed that the crashes, following the activation of "Lock in memory setting", now seem to happen only when I install or uninstall an app. At no other occassion did it happen, even if I was to bombard the phone with app activations. I switched through the Active, Nemus, ADW and Zeam launchers, and it seems it happens on all of them. I don't think this is any longer a launcher issue, so I started investigating.
It seems that moving the apps to the SD card was when the problem first began. I did some reading on the internet, and some users believe that having too much apps can in time start clogging the launcher whenever there are too many apps for it to call. There's no easy fix, short of buying a phone with a much bigger RAM capacity. Then again 3rd party scripts like this Supercharger you mentioned can help, but I'm not sure how safe it is to run on my phone. I've read about lots of cases where the phones became hardbricked. Still waiting for feedback on that one
If it asks for upgrading busybox then dont use it.
