Noob ?'s about root.

I'm sure the answers are posted here someplace but my search skills suck. And I can't find the info. So here are my questions.
Trying to deside whether or not to root. And was wondering if anyone has benchmarks for a stock Droid compared to the diferant levels of overclocking?
Also wondering if I would be able to get the payed apps I have now on my phone back loaded considering alot of them are listed as privet and they will not let me back them up.?.

Not sure about the benchmarks but I also have paid apps. The market saves your information andcafter rooting you can go back to download section of market and should say purchased next to apps you've bought and allow you to install them again. I've switch phones, roms and etc many times but they're always available again in download section. Also if you root and install froyo, it backs them up to your account and re-installs them automatically every time you flash a new rom. Just make sure you use the same info when setting up the phone.

I wanted to comment on your benchmark question...
This alone should influence you to root your Droid. I am running CyanogenMod 6.0 Froyo with ChevyNo1 1200mhz ULTRA low voltage kernel. My battery life is fantastic given the CPU frequency and my phone linpacks at 18-20mflops. I know this is not a very realistic benchmark test but in comparison, a stock Droid will throw out about 6-8mflops.
What I really want to show you, however, is the result from Quadrant, which runs a CPU and graphics benchmark test and shows you a graph comparing your phone to other phones like the Droid (stock) and Nexus One and other popular Android phones.
Give me 5 minutes and I'll have a screenshot up (just transfering some pics)
Okay, look at the screenshot below... my Droid is the yellow bar at the top, and the stock Droid is the second one from the bottom. BIGGGG difference in performance!
Also, aerdely is right about the paid apps... they'll show up in your market so you can re-download them.

I know there's lots of options but I have to ask. What's the most stable 2.2 out there? One with everything working (wifi Bluetooth and all) .
I'm not into the whole changing roms ten times a week thing. Mostly because after setting up apps and preferances on 4 replacement phones over the past 6 months .
I hear 2.2 backs up and redownloads apps, but does it also remember icon setup and app preferences?

The Droid is the fastest phone, save for that Samsung at number 2 overall. The Droids seem to be analogous to "dynoqueens" in the car world because I doubt those 54 MFLOPS devices are running at a stable temperature. So they're just overclocked and maxed out, though for only a few seconds just to get that number.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The Droid is a very capable device, though. 30 MFLOPS seems to be consistent and is a very good benchmark number for a phone that is about nine months old.

OK my stats are as follows
Quadrant 375
LinPack 4.5 mflops
Neocore 24.5 fps
So after looking around at everyone's stats I have made up my mind to take the leep and root !
I have been doing alot of reading and have a few idea's of what I should load up but would like to ask for opinions.
I'm looking for a 2.2 it does not have to be anything funky or over the top just has to work properly with wifi and everything, with a ULV or LV 1.0ghz to 1.25ghz.
My work is a very hot place all year around and I live on my phone on my many many breaks at work so I would really like a kernel that run's cool but pumps the speed..
Opinions, suggestions, recommendations and LINKS to downloads please.
Also please feel free to PM me if you have the time to help a Noob like me with a few dozen ?'s

...so go stock.
So use the FRG01B leak that's supposed to be "stock" from Verizon. Without any further modification, it'll bump your top speed to 800 Mhz, but would allow you to see what's going on without really endangering anything.
It'll also give you a fair benchmark (personally) as to the speed of Froyo before you decide to bump things further.

is there anyway i can root without wiping the phone? im on 2.1 right now. i would just use titanium but you need root to even do that.

THeres ana app called easy root, for a buck...... gives u ROOT access, to say, install rom manager, flash the clockwork recovery and from there, install any zip.
for a buck, seems pretty nice vs. figuring out how to root the damn droid.

They suspended easy root from the market. ? .
It was there this morning and I was going to grab it then but my credit card was a used up prepayed card so had to wait till now to get off work and get a new card for my account. I did that only to find out the app has been removed from the market.. Come on goggle give it back ! I love goggle but this is FAIL . There are many people that have payed for the app and now can't redownload it thats even more crappy then the fact that I can't buy it...

Did you do online watch, I did quick one and its available on mediafire so far from what I can see. I just typed easy root apk in search bar.

Hows that for a benchmark? Root it, and you too can enjoy screen capture, over/under clocking, Flash, Bluetooth voicedialing...it's a no-brainer.

Ok I guess I'm done looking for the easy way out.

NinjaBlur Home on Motorola Droid?

Is there any possible way to port that BlurHome.apk in the Droid X dump to the Motorola Droid, I couldn't find it in the forums.

There is a way by most likely porting the whole build over. But I'm waiting for the droid2 to come out which is supposed to have ninjablur running on froyo. It should be a very easy port since it's basically an upgraded droid from what I've heard.

so, now that the droid 2 is out, r u working on a rom?

if I may interject, that may be hard due to the locked bootloader, but stranger things have happened, though I do wonder what you find desirable in blur. Not meant to be rude, it's just that launcher pro payed has awsome homescreen widgets for social networks, and to my knowlede one of the main reasons people root is to rid their phones of forced upon software like blur. Though if it's really uninvasive, I guess I could see how that could be usefull. (oh, btw hardware changes all the time, just because its the droid 2, don't automatically think its an easy port to throw onto the D1) Did you know the Htc Incredible was originally supposed to have 8 gigs of rom, and, I believe like 2 gigs of ram, too. Though you see how that played out, slap the droid label on anything and you can sell about half the actual device to people at the same price, but I digress. Basically, if you really, really want this ported, make some developer friends online, ask nicely on the forums, or, you know, become a rom chef.

bored with eris, wanting something diff...

I've had my Eris for about 16-months and find the 3.2" screen size and resolution lacking. Being terribly impatient, I've been looking for something to upgrade to without spending a lot of cash.
I figured I could get a used Droid 1 and sell my Eris and not be out too much.
I've put many many custom ROMs ( froyo ) on the Eris, overclocked, etc and would like to do the same on a Droid 1.
How are they at rooting and installing ROMs? How have they held up for ya'll over time? Would the performance be any different? I assume/hope a little better...not that the Eris is bad at 729Mhz.

I have a motorola milestone (same as the droid except I use got mine from telus canada to use on ATT) The Droid/Milestone is awesome. It is super easy to root, just look for universal androot on the market. Its a one click root program. I have mine rooted, overclocked @ 1100mhz, I have a wireless tethering, Telus lite v4 rom (super fast) and a nice software called Swapper (on the market) to use 512mg of my sdcard as virtual memory to give the Milestone/Droid extra memory. I have to tell you the Milestone has a locked bootloader, whereas the Droid 1 from verizon is even easier to root and modify. I know both these phones are aging but they are fantastic devices. I absolutely love my milestone/droid phone. You cant go wrong.

Thinking about buying a new og droid from amazon. Im downgrading from my Bionic as its bootloader locked and can't stand not having soap. I've had the DROID incredible and battery was horrible no matter what I did, had the fascinate, charge, and now am looking to stick to my android roots until my upgrade in november. So should I do it?

Honestly, I was thinking about doing it myself a while back. Don't know about the new ones but the OG Droid as I remember was very responsive to overclocking and ran great. I loved mine. Thing felt like a tank. Only thing to consider is CM will be dropping support for the OG Droid with CM9. Droids are dirt cheap and if you're good with fixing gadgets, you can get one with a broken digitizer for next to nothing.

I just recently fullfilled my 2 yr contract and was looking at new phones, but decided to try rooting and using a custom ROM on my OG Droid to get back some speed and functionality. I am no longer planning to fork over $ for a new phone

They're cheap, so the risk is minimal, but imho it is a painful experience running anything higher than Froyo/CM6 on the OG Droid. I know people swear by CM7 (and various scripts like V6, etc), but I have never gotten CM7 or any other GB ROM running smoothly for me.
The problem isn't the speed (I have mine OCed to 1.2ghz), its the memory. 256mb just isn't enough anymore.

so cm6 is the way to go? I have no problem with that. Whats the better setup with cm6 as far as kernel matching with cm6? Would like to hear some setups from anyone using the old school og droid.

Currntly running PE6. 5 on my og droid with the stock kernel which is 1.05Ghz lv. Have used the V6 scripts in past with so so results, am currently using Juwe's Ram Manager with pretty successful results.

Looks like project elite 6.5 for me, unless they have something newer out. Anything else I need to know about project elite? Whats the verdict on it? Its hard to find info on the og droid roms, so much just scattered around.

It's an asop rom built by actngrezy, he has stated is working on a version 7 but nothing on it recently or date. Alot of info on PE roms at Droid Forums.

well that's exactly it. I have come to the conclussion that I don't need an expensive phone anymore and actually my favorite phone was the htc magic running amon ra rom Three years ago. I have five main uses for android in my little world. phone, facebook, xda, pandora and email. Anything past that and the novelty dies off after a couple of days

Gingerbread roms I'd recommend is Simply Stunning, Liquid, Project Elite, CushZero (as I'm using right now) im getting really good memory. I have been along time Droid user and tried just about every single rom that has been developed for it and finally found one that I can stick too.
If you're going to use Gingerbread, I'd recommend to use v6 supercharger (option 3 or superminfree calculator settings)

Hello. I will be receiving a Droid 3 as a warranty replacement tomorrow. It comes with ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) pre-installed. I have been searching, and cannot find a way to root the Droid 3.
I am hoping I missed it. If someone can point me to the tutorial for rooting the Droid 3 with ICS, I would greatly appreciate it.

Where did you hear it will come with ICS...? Because it won't.

I was told this by the Verizon rep. It is a warranty replacement. he specifically said it has ICS on it. No, I am not mistaken. Maybe he was?
Even if it doesn't, I have been unable to find a tutorial for rooting the Droid 3.

I can assure you that it will not be arriving with ICS, I'm sure he must have been mistaken. It will most likely be running Gingerbread 2.3.4 with the 5.6.890 system software.

If you get a phone w/ics system dump before anything else please, if you need a hand lots of people here will help (or on irc) but since moto still has the d3 listed as "evaluating" for ics and haven't even started working on a build I would say the rep is more than likely mistaken. Hopefully not but if moto had an ics build for the d3 I imagine we would have heard about a soak or something. As for your question I would probably try the root for d4 and if that didn't work check out what they're using on the nexus etc

If you do get ICS please tweet Hash. We really could benefit from it.

We would still have a locked bootloader and the same kernel issues though. I'd put money on the rep being wrong, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

You folks were right. He was wrong. It has 2.3.4.
It runs pretty fast, compares well to the DX2. I wanted CM ROM on it, but none are completely working. Camera has issues GSM FCs and so forth. I just wish my DX2 would work. Haven't used a physical keyboard in a while either.

I bought my D3 FOR the keyboard. I came from an enV touch and the thought of a touchscreen keyboard that wasn't 100% perfect made me shiver. Looking back, I would definitely have gone with a SGS II. I didn't know anything about the D3's bootloader being locked and the full touch screen is definitely worth the unlocked bootloader. That being said, I still love the keyboard. It's better than any I have ever used.
I don't hate my Droid 3. It runs my ICS roms rather smoothly and the only thing that I wished worked is Google Chrome. I use the camera but I found that I have not wanted to use the video recorder since switching; even if it DID work.
If you want a CM ROM that is pretty stable, I'd recommend 7.2 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308924
It's a bit more stable than CM9, though it still has some bugs. Stable enough for a daily driver in my opinion.

My d3 is alright but if I was sent one now with any option of sending back either for a different phone or terminate a contract(within 30 days or whatever and setup a new one) I would jump @ the chance, just because its a little old, 1g ram would be nice but imo it's like dual core phones, 1 core is wasted 90% of the time, upgradable to ics would be very nice too, custom kernel would be nicest though(htc,lg etc etc). I guess what I'm saying is its decent but I wouldn't buy one now.

I'd say droid 3 is all about the keyboard. Without the keyboard, there would be many better phones. Phones with 1GB ram, unlocked bootloader and a better screen.
However, I'd rather have a keyboard than have those ^ things without a keyboard .

It seems to run faster, and more smooth than my Droid X2. It's ugly though, and it will take some getting used to a physical keyboard again. I have it rooted, radiocom hacked. I want to tweak the camera, but the thread is confusing me a bit as to which zip to use, or which edits to make to build.pro and the XML file. I would prefer to edit rather than install a zip as I don't really want a bootstrap on the phone.
App Brain is making me frustrated though, since Fast Web Installer will not log in.
So far, I am loving this.

Another heartbreak. If D3 doesn't gets ICS by July, I'll let it go.
