Flashing the N1 - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
Can I flash my N1 using HardSPL?
I had a HD T8282 before, and I used HardSPL on that just about once a week.

I dont think so, as it wasnt made for the n1 only certain phones that used it or needed it for something(eg. rom, fastboot)
Doing so could do serious possible damage, what purpose of flashing different SPL?

Should I get a TyTn?

Morning all
I have been offered a swap for my iPhone for a brand new boxed Orange TyTn II and Im just wondering if its worth doing?
I have had previous windows mobile phones and do like the phones so I am considering the trade, I am currently on o2.
The thing is i have read all the posts about unlocking and flashing roms etc and im a little on edge about doing it myself as im sure i will break it lol
I would basically need to sim unlock the phone and remove all the orange software as I think it looks naff!
How much work is envolved in doing what i need and how long would it take?
Sorry if im repeating a post, im not the best at forums and get lost with all this info you guys have!
Cheers
Sy
Absolutely YES!!!
There is no contest. The TyTN II wins hands down!!!
Leave well enough alone. Perhaps get a sim unlocker. Just do a search and you should find something. But don't play around with flashing roms etc. You may regret it.
Use the HTC original apps which you will find on a sticky at the beginning of this forum.
You'd be suprised how easy it is to Flash the Tytn II, the only things you have to remember is:
Flash Pof's HardSPL first,
Then Flash your ROM,
And make sur eyou have a Radio that is compatable with the ROM you've chosen (although if you have an incompatable radio, your device will still turn on and function, you just won't be able to use certain elements, calls/gps/etc)
Plus, you'll notice a MASSIVE speed increase when you've flashed to a new ROM
Hope this helps
I'm wondering if i should get a TyTn 2 now or wait for a Xperia.
Checked out the TyTn at a store a couple of days ago and i loved it, the only thing i didnt like was that it doesnt have a radio. Then i read around in this forum and came across the driver problems and the touchscreen bug and due to them i'm more inclined to wait for Xperia, but then i checked out Xperia's design and i didnt like the way the keyboard slides to, makes you operate the joystick with the right hand instead of the left and that's kind of uncomfortable.
seriously, who uses radio? I stream my Sirius satalite radio..
Sirius Pwnz AM/FM

Yes you MUST CID unlock as well (unless it has already been done, which is doubtful if it is on Orange).
My advice...Before even getting the TYTN II, read the sticky's and Wikis in the upgrading ROM section at least 3 times over to ensure you have an idea of what you are going to need to do before even doing anything. when you think you understand it, read them again.
Then go ahead and flash any ROM you fancy and enjoy the benfits of the TYTN II voer the Iphone.
HardSPL is the replacement bootloader that allows you to install an non original ROM.
Im on T mobile and i hav heard that the ROM is not heavily branded. im just worried about bricking it. i already have the MDA viara 3.
reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679 doing hardspl, does that automaticly unlock the CID or is there another tool to do that? if so do CID unlock it first and then hardspl?
You will NEED to CID unlock AND HardSPL...Do not consider doing anything untill you are 100% certain of the steps you are performing and why, otherwise you will have a rather expensive paperweight.
EVERYTHING you need to know and more about Rom flashing is contained here

Seriously, ensure you read every link and sub link related to ROM flashing. Even make sure you read the "inspirational reading" bit, that will give you the confidence to try it.
As long as you read you will be fine.
When I was new here I spent 4 days solid reading reading and reading before biting the bullet and flashing my first ROM. At
Thanks for the advice. one small question. if i was to follow this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1790046&postcount=3 word for word i should be succesful?
there is one question i am still confused about and thats this hardspl/cid unlock. according to the Thread i linked, all i got to do is follow the guide from HTC Kaiser Hard-SPL v1 - CID Unlock & Flash any ROM to your device (4 free) and bam im ready to Flash the ROM?
also what are the major benefits of flashing to a custom ROM?
does the procedure from that last link above hardspl AND CID at the same time?
hi i managed to hardspl my device succesfuly. so im ready to install a new cooked ROM? what are the best ROMS out there that i can try. i have seen dutty's ROM that many have used and was wondering if thats the best one
Does the DUTTY rom improve the camera and video playback?

Terminology

Hello
Could someone please kindly explain what does SPL mean?
And why ROM is called ROM? Is it the firmware?
Doews HSPL void warranty and USPL not?
I searched at google for a while but didnt get a proper answer.
Sorry to ask this here. Anyway, I am sure there are a lots of people who would like this to know as well.
Thanks
no idea..
Check my post at the end of the "Dummys......" sticky post, Uspl Doesnt invalidadte as its a temporary change as far as I'm aware. Hspl however invalidates the Eula of windows I think.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone
Rom=Read Only Memory in this rom you find the firmware of your device.
thanks for all your replies..
now I understand why these are called ROMs..
but one thing that still haunts my mind..
what does SPL stand for? i am very curious in this..what is it for?
is it some securtiy protocol? or what?
thanks guys..
SPL - second program loader.
the SPL is the bootloader. on a pc, the equivalent is BIOS.
HSPL is what you use to edit the SPL in such a way that it would allow you to use custom ROMS. its a permanent change as you are flashing a new SPL. USPL works only whenever you use/run it, so the SPL remains unchanged. changes are only temporary and when the USPL application is closed (or the device rebooted), the device goes back to its previous SPL.
See the SPL Questions page on the wiki. It will tell you more than your ever want to know .
AFAIK, USPL void's the warranty just as much as Hard SPL, but does it in a way that no-one can detect.
It's like saying the warranty is void if used in the attic, taking your phone in the attic will void it, but it will take some proving that you took it into the attic
Dave
nice example with the attic
thanks guys for your replies...Now I finally now what SPL is thanks to ASK768.. thanks...
have a great one...
no problem.
but actually, while we're at it, why would one want to flash a new radio on their device? what kind of benefits does it give?

I suggest you read up on radio's. Generally speaking newer versions have better reception, GPS fixed, less battery drain. Obviously area/country you are in may effect reception so best to read up on which radio's work better in which areas!

New TyTN II Branded, can it be unlocked and SW removed?

Hi all,
Just got a "new" TyTN II, and really chuffed with it, from having upgraded from the Hermes.
Only a few small probs...
Its locked to Orange, and its also running the Orange software.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the phone, but would love to get some awesome custom roms on it, and actually reduce the memory usage by having no branded software running.
Can this be easily done? Or better to send off for unlocking etc?
Thank you,
PS, are there any cool apps / games for the TyTN II?
Hi all,
Just is there can be any movement on here..
Thank you,
All that is very well possible. Check out the stickeyd threads in this forum and subfora; all has been elaborately laid out there. Don't flash the rom until you have read a lot about it and know what you're doing!
Flashing isn't a problem, but its the unlocking part i'm concerned about...
I just don't know if I can flash a custom rom on without it being unlocked and debranded etc...
Or can I just flash away regardless?
Hi
Did exactly what you want to do yesterday you should be fine - just flash the rom you want onto it and all should work fine - I am in australia and I bought a UK Orange tynn 11
John
make sure you follow the flashing for newbs on the wiki. before flashing custom rom you need hard spl or you will brick the device. It also walks you through the steps required for unlocking.

Thanks setter,
Did you unlock yours too?
Mines being used on Orange anyway, so no problem, just more for when / if i sell on...
I was more curious on the flashing custom roms on, Doing HardSPL isn't hard etc, nor is flashing, as i said before, I've done that before, wasn't sure on the unlocking!
play with it have fun and flash it when you think is time to..
search for supercid for kaiser, it is just as easy as hardspl and/or flashing new rom

Battery issue

Hey eveyone i got a question and hopefully i'll get a answer....i had flashed tons of ROMs on my G1 and all the time the battery last for a day or so....after flashind the Mling Hero 2.5.7 my battery is been dying sooner than usual using my phone the same way that i used before...using other Hero Roms.I read somewhere on the devs section (i can't remember exactly where) that i should reflash the spl again....should i do this?...i have the danger spl....should i flash the death spl??....will this fix the battery issue...
btw...now im using the Hero_over rom freaking fast...
"danger", "death", "special" etc are all the same spl. I see no reason to reflash the spl. maybe you need a new battery?

Restore Hard-SPL and Radio. Need Help!

Hey,
for warranty issues I want to restore hard SPL. But I read thats only recommended to experienced users/hackers. Im a bit confused now - is it really difficult and/or dangerous?
Also I have to install original Radio but I don't have an idea what my original Radio was. I know for sure that I changed...I think I first had .14 but I do some research on that - anyway - does anyone know what radio it could have been?
The xperia was bought in Germany February 2009. Carrier: T-mobile.
Thx for answering my questions!
Kon
Well for the hardSPL, I am pretty sure that the sony ericsson update service program for windows just updates your hardSPL to the most recent manufacture stock release version of the factory hardSPL.
I am pretty sure that this can work.
For the radio though, I do not know, but I think it depends on the operating system. Through the ROM threads, there must be some kind of clean Windows Mobile 6.1 floating around with no tweaks or hacks. If you find one, then install the operating system first then the hardSPL.

It's exactly the same process as putting in hard-SPL and a custom ROM. Just flash back to a custom ROM then install the stock-SPL.
I don't think you need to reinstall your radio, but if you want, install the 1.17 version, it doesn't change your radio version number and usually shows up as 1.14
