[Q] New i9000 - various questions

Long time reader, first time poster Receive my i9000 tomorrow. Excited but not interested in a laggy device so want to get customising straight away....
I've read numerous threads regarding rooting, download/recovery mode and custom ROM flashing.
I'm interested in gaining root access and flashing the Darky 7.5 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091). There's a couple of things that confuse me that I've tried reading/searching about with no luck. Please no flaming - if I've missed something, please just kindly point me in the right direction
Firstly, the lack of download/recovery mode on some i9000 devices (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091). Does the lack of ability of this feature mean that I will need to complete the fix detailed on these forums? Or am I just able to initiate the download mode whenever I need it (which should be rarely, I don't plan on obsessively updating ROMS) through cmd and the SDK via my computer? If I don't complete the fix, will the method of accessing download mode via the computer not work?
Secondly, the clockworkmod. Their website is down and says its under construction so I can't find much info about why this is needed and whether it is absolutely required or not. As far as I can tell, its a permanent? temporary? replacement for the stock android download mode. Is this correct? If it is a permanent replacement of the stock android download mode, can it be removed and reverted to the original?
With future updates, (my device is shipping with 2.1), does the download mode get updated/removed, or is it hardware based, thus fixed?
Whats voodoo? Whilst lots of pages talk about this.. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is.... the Darky ROM says its optional to activate it.. but can't actually tell whats being activated or how..
Throughout all these processes, whats reversible and whats not? After installing clockwork, lagifxes, custom ROMS, rooting, partitioning, changing/partitioning away from RFS, will my device ever be able to be reverted to an out-of-the-box state ever again?
Lastly, honest opinion - the i9000's here in Australia are shipping with 2.1. Should I just root and apply the lagifx and enjoy as is? Should I just update to 2.2 and leave it there? Or are the improvements that custom ROMS provide, in particular Darky's, worth the mucking around?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated... thanks guys ;-)
** added -- and what is JPU, JPO and JPY?? :-S ***
You should really get the 3 button fix working. And pretty much is reversible by flashing a stock rom. I can't answer on the other points.

So flashing a stock i9000 rom resets the partitioning modifications that custom ROMs and lagfixes create?
I think so. But i'm far from 100% sure.

*bump*****************
1. Check your unit if download mode (vol down+home+power) and recovery (vol up+home+power) is working.
If not, get it by searching here in XDA.
2. Clockwork is a (better) form of recovery mode. Plus you can activate lag fixes there.
Nandroid back up is a plus.
3. Darkyy's 7.5 is froyo 2.2.1 so you're up-to-date if you do flash that ROM.
4. Please please please back-up your EFS folder before playing with your device!

Overclock kernal

Hello again, going on my 4th new thread tonight (please no comments, Let's just say im starting to like phones ) Well anyways I wanted to max out my phone with an overclock kernal but I would rather find one that's compatible rather than brick my new phone. Could anyone suggest one? I tried searching the forums for a compatible kernal with no luck. Thanks
What rom are you running?
Glitterballs voodoo 1.2 overclocked kernel

Glitterballs will work with that. You will want to download voltage app. I think it is in the op
Where exactly is it? I'm pretty much a noob and the only files i've downloaded and installed are .zips, so if you could explain that would be awesome.
What kernel does darkeys user?
Download sgs kernel flasher from market
Kernel

Voltage app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=473124&d=1293301548
To be safe disable lagfix
Download kernel
Open sgs kernel flasher
Click on choose kernel
Select ......
Navigate to your download folder
Select kernel
Select flash kernel
After boot, kernel will be updated
Go into recovery
Advanced ulk options
Lagfix
Enable all ext 4
Go back
Tweaks
Click on all options except last
Go back
Reboot system
Select back up and restore
When booted up download voltage app
Kernel comes pre set to 1.2 ghz oc
I got until the recovery menu when I couldn't find the advanced ULK thing all I could find is Advanced and i couldn't find lagfix. I pressed something like fix permissions and then it fixed permissions. I rebooted into a screen that had Galaxy S I9000 with samsung at the bottom. Then a robotic lady voice said something long that i didnt catch and then it rebooted into that screen again and this time i listened and it said restore operation and rebooted so i took out the battery and it just keeps doing that. Please help!!!!!
Let it do it. Let it load. Voodoo is enabling. I was wrong about the lag fix on the kernel. Do not pull the battery again
It takes a couple of minutes. Man, I am sorry I have been using a different kernel and got crossed on what lag fix it has. I hope it loads, please in future do not panic and pull battery so quickly
Alright I'm sorry i just freaked when I couldn't even get into recovery mode. I let it sit but my dad is a senior member of the site and he tells me these stories of how people have new phones and they brick them out of the box, so when I heard that weird voice i flipped. How long does it usually take?
Couple of minutes. No more then ten
Ok It's been a long time and it's still just sitting there saying restore operation. At this point I don't care about the kernal, what can I do to get my phone back to normal or even factory reset???
Wait. Do you have allot of apps? It is converting all your data
As long as it is talking we are still moving along
Respond to my pm
No I just got this for christmas. I have ytt3r's version of Darky's ROM and as i was looking over it, I noticed all these little things like texts and there was ALOT of them.

[Q] The SpeedMod and Samsung Captivate

I recently installed the SpeedMod for the Samsung Captivate. I went by the step-by-step instructions it gave me, downloaded Odin, and download the TAR file that contained the SpeedMod. I installed it and my phone successfully rebooted. The start-up screen was different but otherwise everything seemed faster when booting up. I went to double check to see if it really installed but under the kernel version it still said 2.6.32.9 . Is it suppose to say something about the SpeedMod? It said it would on the step-by-step instructions.
I also installed Voodoo for the sound problem before I flashed this kernel. Before it said I do not have the right kernel. After installation it has let me choose various options which leads me to think that the SpeedMod is installed. But it still does not say it under kernel version.
I am new to this and still do not fully understand everything. I am just learning as I go along. If anybody has any questions just let me know and I'll do my best to respond back and I can quickly understand this.
Firmware: 2.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: FROYO.UCKB1
Anymore information just let me know.
lol ... thanks..??

you certainly have speedmod kernel. the new version may not have the kernel version changed to show what it is but there would be no other way for the voodoo sound driver/module to get installed. you should also be able to get into cwm recovery now instead of 3e
Dani- What did you mean by your last line? What's 3e?
Truesselo - ? What
have you tried to make a phone call on that setup? my guess is that voice no longer works now because you didnt flash an i9000 modem to go along with the speedmod kernel
Phone calls work. They sound better actually due to the SpeedMod or Voodoo.
Did you actually go into the cwm menu and enable the tweaks and also enable your filesystem to write ext4>rfs? There is more under the hood that what you get out of the box there.

other way around rfs to ext4. but hes going to need more info than that.
boot into recovery! shut off> hold both volume buttons> then hold power> count to 3 AFTER the screen comes on before you let go.
now you are in speedmod kernel clockwork recovery! (dont use rom manager anymore if you did)
go to clockwork options > lagfix options > enable lagfix (convert to EXT4)
and select covert system to EXT4 > Yes
back, back
reboot
yes (let it do its thing and reboot)
yes (let it do its thing and reboot)
lagFIXED!!!
you will have to re-root! but theres an option in your kernel for that too!!
wait.... look in the CWM/ onix idiot guide in my signature. i made it! different color/ kernel but same options...
Thanks for the info! I actually tinkered with it and did exactly what you all stated on the recovery menu. I am actually master clearing everything now and going with serendipity 6.4. I am pretty sure SpeedMod will work with it? Right?
But I appreciate all the info. If SpeedMod is compatible, what settings do you recommend i tweak it to? I heard different things, but I want to know what you all think since you all know what you are doing lol. Plus, I've heard that JuiceDefender would be a good add-on to download?
Sorry for the questions but I'll learn quick and be up where you all are at soon......
Serendipity has speedmod already cooked in.
all of the previous mentioned tweaks are recommended
Juice defender imo doesn't help.
Stay away from juice defender it's not needed on 2.2 roms. That was good for 2.1, but not so much any more.

Does anyone knows how to stop rebooting problem?

I am now using the Original Stock ROM and downloaded several Apps. After few days, it just gave me headache because of rebooting issues.
I downloaded already the following files:
CWM 5.0.7
Titanium Backups
BusyBox
SuperUser
But still, I encountered rebooting problem.
Can somebody help me?
If this one solve, then, I will add the solution to my Official Thread.
Thanks in advance Guys.
im on v20m stock rom...rooted but havent flash any clockwork recovery...so far havent got any reboot and in fact its the most stable ROM i use so far(from v20f stock to cm7 to cm9 to v20j stock to v20m stock)
what stock version do you have?
you said it started after downloading certain apps...try uninstalling those then check if it will still reboot.
last i would recommend is smartflash the stock rom again
In my experience, I've had random reboots for a number of different reasons. It's hard to tell what may be the cause just based on your description. Please provide more details. For example, Does it boot at all and then reboot after some use? Or are you stuck at the boot animation and cannot go to the home screen at all?
And when you said you are on stock ROM, is it the same stock you had before? Or is it a different one?
To share some of the reasons I've had in the past...
1) Incompatible kernel (may not be your problem since you are on stock)
2) Overheating (usually due to overclocking too rigorously and/or wall charging)
3) Messing up with settings somewhere
And as chupi said, just basing on what you wrote, it may be related to one or a combination of the apps you installed. Or, there may be just a bad combination of the apps that you are using.
I hope you have a backup prior to the app installation. That should help narrow down things, or at least go back to the pre-problem stage.

Thanks Chupi.
It is Okay now. I think, it is because of Fruit Ninja, Half Brick application. So, I just uninstalled it.
Also, I disable Background Apps of Yahoo Mail.
Everything is now OK.
I am using V20M.

Thanks Aragorn.
I think, some applications are not suitable for SU660. Right now, I just uninstalled the Fruit Ninja (Half Brick) and disabled the Background Apps of Yahoo Mail. Everything is Ok Now.
I recharge it through my laptop.
I am using V20m and it is the latest version.

I have the same problem. It regularly happens when Im playing games but when the weather is cold for some reason, it rarely happens. must be hardware.

[Q] Help about android

Hello everyone, how are you? I am a newbie here and I use a galaxy s. For the first time I upgraded my rom from froyo to gingerbread. But still I have to know so many things about android roms, kernels and other basic things e.g. about changing roms, rooting, unrooting, backups etc. I have also some questions such as, what rom actually is? what is kernels and how do they work? How does android actually works? In a sentence, I want to know everything so that changing a rom or kernel will be a matter of time for me and following the procedures written in this forum will be very easy for me.
I know there are some very talented person here. If anyone of you please help me to go through this tutorial process, specially if you give me some materials regarding on this, that will be very much helpful for me and other guys like myself. Thanks in advance.

Let me try to help you even for a bit..
1) ROM is phones firmware like stock ROM are firmwares that are provided by samsung and custom ROMs are made by community and they are mostly android 4.0/4.1 vs 2.3 stock
2)kernel is heart of android OS it loads essential files during bootup to make android boot. (it is certain for device/android version)since you are a newbie dont get into kernels that much
3) "how android actually works?" well thats a bit hard to explain... Android runs on linux kernel its a set of framework files that run system apps from /system/app as i know (i may be wrong)
4) changing ROMs is quite easy:
first you have to root your device with a rooted kernel (since you on stock gingerbread) search a kernel for your firmware (you may use CF-root)
second is you have to have ClockWorkMod (CWM) revocery installed so you can flash custom ROMs (usualy you get it with CF-root kernel)
To flash a rom you should:
-Download it on your SD card (preferably internal one)
-reboot into recovery mode (Power off your device, after COMPLETE powerdown hold POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME(middle) keys and wait untill "Galaxy S I9000" pops up
-do (navigate with volume up\down keys and select by middle key)"Wipe data\factory reset" then do "Wipe cache partition" after that go to "Anvanced" and select "wipe dalvik cache" after that return to main menu (***GO back*** button at bottom) and go to "Install zip from SD card" > "Choose zip from SDcard" and pick your file and finally after that reboot and your rom flashed (WARNING flashing a rom wipes all your data)
-
-I just told you how you do it, but since you`re a newbie i recomend you learn more about all that stuff and only after that give it a try. I hope ive been some help, if you want anything else, ask here or PM me. Take care!
