My G1 just unrooted itself. - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just using the web browser and my phone rebooted itself. It has a history of bad behavior. I think the sd card slot is flakey and I'm using a swap partition, so when it flakes out it crashes. I'm also using sd-ext for apps. I'm using a new sd card, so I don't think it's the card itself. The old one did this, too.
After it rebooted all my 3rd party apps were gone. I forgot about apps2sd for a second and decided to do a nandroid restore thinking that might help. I recently wiped the phone and had a backup after I installed some favorite apps.
When it cam back up all my apps were there and it looked good, except now no root apps work, and I can't use su in the terminal! It's like my phone unrooted itself.
Has anyone else ever heard of this happening before after a crash? Do I have to go through the root process all over again? Eh, I should probably just ditch the phone. It's not reliable any more.

Any ideas about this? Should I just try to go through the rooting process again?

There are a few things you can check... Do you have a recovery menu still? If so, this is good! And we can go from there...Don't give up as of yet. I have bricked...like PERMA bricked my phone several times. I get my replacement and go again. haha.
Woosah! Woosah! ....but if you REALLY wanna get rid of it that bad, PM me and I'll make you an offer.

Messed something up

So the other day i flashed the leaked version of froyo 2.2 to my captivate. Everything went fine and used it all day today. Well i wanted to recover my lost apps so i rooted it using the z4 root app. I tried to do a temp root first but the phone sat there for a while and didnt seem to be moving along with the process so i hit back and retried the permanent root option this time and just let it sit there. It got done with the rooting process and everything seemed to be fine. I opend titanium back up and tried to restore my previous back up from my rooted 2.1 phone. It wouldnt load the apps but i believe it loaded all the settings. It was saying they were 3rd party apps even though they came from the market. No big deal. I just lookked at the list and redownloaded the ones i wanted and restored the app settings individually. Got done with that and everything was working perfectly....until i shut the phone off and turned it back on. A messsage saying "android.phone stopped working...force close something or other" it would do that i hit close, the phone would vibrate a few times and it would pop back up. This made the phone unusable. But i decided id take the sim card out and turn it back on and everything is working fine. Im actually posting from the phone right now via wifi. Sorry to make this so long but i wanted to try and be as detailed as possible. Someone please help me out!

It sounds like you restored system settings from Titanium Backup. Don't do that. It will cause a whole gang of fc's (including the one you saw, android.phone has stopped unexpectedly). Only restore your apps and app data from titanium backup. When you restore system data from TiBu, you usually have to reflash the rom to stop things from fc'ing.

Thays what i was kind of assuming. So i just have to redo the same process i did to flash 2.2 in the first place right?

Well mostly the same, all except the part about restoring the wrong data. Just do missing apps this time.

Power/sleep button wont sleep after rooting.

Hey I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue and if there was a fix already available for this. After rooting the device everything is great except I cant force the sleep mode anymore. When I press the power button nothing happens. Now if I hold it down it will turn off and on and it will also go to sleep on its own just fine. I just can initiate the sleep myself. Ive been using it like this for weeks doesnt really bother me much just wanted to know if I was the only person to have this problem and if there was a fix.
(Sorry if this is posted somewhere else. I searched and searched)

That definitely isn't normal. I'd restore to factory and re-root . . . or just leave it un-rooted and run nookie froyo from an SD.
If u used auto-nooter, did u try to reformat your SD card after it was done?
I noticed some issues with the sleep button before I reformatted mine.

Yeah, you'll have to backup/ restore. A relatively easy way would be to back it up via Titanium, transfer Titanium's backup files to the SD partition on nookie froyo, and then restore via Titanium. It'd be best to only restore apps + data, not system data.

ROOT OPTIONS FOR ZIO 2.2 Cricket

I'm using Universal Androot, Ti Back Up Pro, Root Explorer, SetCPU, Ad Free Android for Root, Launcher Pro Plus, QuickBoot(not sure if this works with the phone yet) and I used Uninstaller for Root to erase all the bloatware and BS. Did a great job too, didn't have to track down all the files individually. Anyway I wanted a place for everyone, especially noobs like me to have a place to come and get advice about things over our heads. Oh yeah and I have a custom startup sound thanks to the Boot Screen thread. Working on getting all the images to replace the Cricket screen now. This is my first android, and WILL NOT be my last.
Awesomeness!
I had attempted a root on my Zio when it was stuck on 1.6 but my prayers were answered with this weeks update! So, thanks for this thread man. I'm already loving 2.2 and I'm about to try your root process and see how it goes. I'm so happy I can finally use this thing! I actually parted ways with my iPhone today. I'm just going to invest in a bigger sd card.
Anywho, I'm still hoping for some custom Zio ROMS in the future.
I'll let ya know how the root turns out.

Yeah I have an 8GB and it's not going to be enough soon, especially when ROMS start coming out, that is if we ever get clockworkmod support. Until then rooting and using custom launchers is about as good as it gets. Tons and tons of reading helps. The more the merrier.
just installed a custom boot screen over the Cricket one. With a custom boot sound. Got the boot screen from fate43 over in the Boot Screen thread. Good work and much thanks. made the boot sound with a music file converter I DLed from Google here on the comp. Freakin kid in a candy store I tell ya........
Done!
So I ended up using Universal Androot to root and Super Manager to get rid of the bloatware. So far so good.
I've got the stock 1G sd card now and I never wanted to bother upgrading since I had 32G on my iPhone. I don't miss that thing at all now. I'm finally freeeeeee!!!
Now for boot screens and beyond.
This is far more rewarding that jailbreaking any ....other....devices.
Which version of Universal Androot did you use?
1.6.5.2 beta I do believe were the numbers. I go to look to be sure and it's just gone from my phone. So look around, just type it in to the search bar or google it. I'm almost certain of the numbers though.
hmmm thats the only one ive been finding id post a link but it wont let me because im so noob on this forum. Im new to android so i'm hesitant to root it until I know I can return to stock. Any recommendations for being prepared to do this? would I need to rip the current stock rom?

rooting your phone does not alter the "stock" rom in the way you're thinking - once you root, you can never go back - this is not true. All rooting does is give you super user access, so you _can_ use apps that require root access (like widgets for rebooting, root file explorer, setcpu, task killers, etc...), as well as other benefits.
Universal androot makes it way too easy to root/unroot your phone (one clickety to root, one clackety to unroot).
Once you get a little more familiar with android, you'll be able to really see the benefits of having root.
Thanks for the info

when using 1.6 androot and root explorer worked perfectly now with 2.2 when i goto root root works fine (im taking it does as it said woot your phone is rooted but then goto bring up root explorer it tells me to force close it. i restart my phone and i dont root it root explorer works fine leave root explorer running then root my phone then go back to root explorer and refresh it just sits there at a black screen can any one help me fix this so i can root my phone again as i had to get a replacement phone and lost my boot up scrren i made.
Sounds to me like you flubbed up somewhere. Unroot, factory reset. Reinstall. Make sure you're still rooted(should be). I had same problems. Only factory reset helped. Make sure you back up first!!!!

b4 you reset the phone and go through that whole process, try wiping the data cache of all of your apps that use root. Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>Root Explorer>Clear Data
I probably needed that. Taken care of now and forever more. Thanks fate

Did what you said fate and it still wants to fc even with the new version of root explorer i even did a hard reset like i just took it out of the box with 2.2 on it and still the same and the only 2 programs i installed was root explorer v2.14.1 and androot v1.6.2 beta 5 and im doing the soft root btw but i doubt that would make a differnce. I do know that when i soft root and have wifi enabled my wifi meter on the task bar will disappear and when i goto settings to turn it back on under wifi it says error in small letters the only way to get wifi back is to reboot the phone. Fixing pcs and windows is alot easyer then phones lol.
I tryed to use another program that you need to have root access the program is root uninstaller and it fails to install while the phone is rooted restarted the phone that root uninstaller installed fine and did a soft root with androot the program will come up but wont let me uninstall anything but yet androot is saying woot your device is rooted. I'm starting to think universal androot dont work right no more on android 2.2 as it worked perfectly on android 1.6 and all my apps worked perfectly to root now i can't root at all any other way to root other then androot?

Cyanogenmod Question

Hey, i'm having an issue with cyanogenmod 7 on my Nook Color. Switched from cupcake because I thought I'd have greater compatibility with apps. Since the change, programs that once worked (e.g. snesoid, beautifu widgets) won't book. Just get hung and ask me if I want to force close. I'm using the tablet tweaks and everything... is this just how it is, or did I mess up somewhere along the line? Thanks.
I can't speak for the specific apps or ROM ur using, but yeah this happens with the occasional app. Remember that u r using an unfinished product. It will get better as CM refines it. Android as a whole is a buggy system. Its never going to be as functional as something like iOS.
Did you wipe either Cache and/or Data partitions before flashing CM7? Wiping the Data partition will wipe all installed applications and settings, however, it will prevent any weird issues arising from incompatible settings across different ROMs and OS versions.
I don't know about snesoid, but my personal experience is that BW works very well in CM7.

Sounds like something's wrong. My Beautiful Widgets works great. I'd try reinstalling using these instructions:
I have similar problems with both Beautiful Widgets and the XDA app. When I log into the XDA app, it gives me a force close pop up. However, when I use the XDA app without logging in, I don't have any problems.
Which instructions are you referring to in that MASSIVE 100+ page post?
Thanks.

The first post on that page.. That's how I flashed CM7 (pretty standard method, really) and I have no problems with Beautiful Widgets. Haven't tested XDA app. To be honest, I have problems with XDA app on my Droid 1, CM7, so I never use it.
Thanks everyone! I installed following the instructions from wiki.cyanogenmod http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide
I will give it another shot and report back when I do. Right now I've gone back to cupcake, but still having a problem with beautiful widgets- gets stuck on the "loading skins" screen, never loads.
p.s. I *did* wipe the cache and data partitions
"Cupcake"?? I think you mean "Eclair"?
Cupcake was many versions ago, before the Nook existed, and the Nook Color ships with Eclair...
So, I switched to cyanogen, but I couldn't get beautiful widgets or snesoid to run. Trying to revert to factory settings, but every time I try I get stuck on the word ANDROID in blue.
I've tried hard booting 8x, I've tried running the script to change the bootcount but this just gets me to clockworkmod. I try running the factory reset/data wipe option, but it clearly doesn't remove cyanogen. I've also tried sideloading a 1.1 version zip, all to no avail. Any suggestions? Would uninstalling clockworkmod help?
Are you sure you followed the 8-failed-boots method precisely? That really should have brought you back to stock, at least as far as I understand.
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
I really do think so. It brought me to clockwork recovery instead of the usual factory reset...
Well I'm out of my league (I haven't done this) but it seems there are still ways... You could check out http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...install-cwr-save-root-revert-stock-image.html or do some searches here.
Now I'm stuck on the N sign instead of android... Tried everything in the link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690 including the boot partition. No dice. The only way i can get it to boot is to reinstall cyanogen. Is there some trick to uninstalling cyanogen? Any other suggestions out there?
It seems like cyanogen just WON'T WIPE. Even when I format my data, it still loads, despite clockworkmod reporting that it has been formatted. Ideas please!
Check at androidtablets dot net
look for the link about restoring and removing clockwork from an SD card. I'd post the link but I can't yet.

Bummer. Yeah, that's the link. You might want to look in Nookdev too. They oulined a process that was similar, but they said you have to do the image restore AND unregister... though it's been a while since I've looked at it. It might be more helpful. Good luck in getting it back to stock.
This is unfortunate. I had been under the impression it was a LOT easier to get back to stock. (I still bet someone who knows will give you the right guidance.)
Oh well, I guess it's a good argument for using SD card booting exclusively -- I can't wait for a final CM7 SD Card ISO.

[Q] Frozen Launcher Nexus one, now wont boot.

Hi all
This is my first post so please excuse my ignorance and point me in the right direction if I'm in the wrong area. I will try to be as clear as possible.
I have a stock N1 At&T unlocked....
I kept running out of memory (low mem warning) so I rooted my phone.
Using App2sd I moved as many as my apps to sd card ...problem solved.
In an attempt to perhaps gain quicker boots I froze a few apps including the stock launcher as I was using go launcher.. No issues or problems.
However... My problem came when I moved Go launcher to the sd card to gain space....
Now the phone wont boot , it just continually shows the animated "x" nexus logo.
My reasoning is, now the phone cant load the "frozen" stock launcher and cant find Go launcher for booting on the sd card , so It's stuck in a searching cycle.
Question.. Is there a non destructive way to recover from this? I have TiTanium Bkup free which I backed up 2 days ago.
If I do a "recovery" will it un root my phone and unfreeze my apps?
Can I unfreeze my stock launcher from boot mode?
I can seem to find any thread that comes close apart from doing a recovery
I thank you all in advance for your time and your patience in this matter..
I would love your help and advice.
Just flash your ROM again without doing a full wipe. Reinstall apps2sd. All your apps and data should be still there.

Thank you
Thank you cpm !!
Again excusing my ignorance....
When you mean "flash" do you mean to use the restore feature on power up?
My next step after this was to flash a CM9 ics rom for a N1 I see U are using one... are there any issues ? could you give me the link?
Again many thanks for you assistance.... much appreciated
I will let you know how it goes
If you want CM9 then look at BCM ROM in the Dev forum. You can download it there.
Only thing not working is video camera. You can take pics, but not video. Might be sorted over time. Otherwise a very stable ROM.
Note you'll also have to install Blackrose to repartition your phone.
