ok my hero met an unfortunate death in lake michigan today (don't ask first phone I ever killed honest!)
anyways got a used hero off craigslist, was told it was new within the last month but guessing not at this point not a huge deal since it works fine but it looks like it was previously rooted possibly since if I go power and vol down I get the option to go into recovery, but then it goes to the phone with and exclamation point error. at this point I was thinking I would just start over its running the .6 version of 2.1 from sprint so I downloaded the .5 RUU but it hangs on the HTC screen when the phone reboots and won't install, so I'm kinda stuck at this point and not sure what's hanging me up, any ideas?
Run the RUU a second time while its stuck at the HTC screen, usb connection error 171 right?

tried that and no luck. but after a couple hours of messing with the phone I found a post on here about someone who had the same issue. Was suggested to boot the phone with vol - up then plug in usb then run the RUU and it worked. so its up and running now thank goodness.

i currently have a htc touch pro -mighty rom(sprint) and a while ago i once screwed the Touch Screen Digitizer so i bought another one. i just bought a used hero and the screen looks like it is in excellent condition, although i cannot swipe anything on the screen (had a user name and password lock when i got it and so i wiped it) after wiping at the very end i watched as it flashed a message really fast something about screen locked. when i see windows or whatever it is i push menu twice and it appears to unlock the phone as power save mode is all that i can see otherwise so now since i can see the icons but cannot touch anything only the buttons work, my question , is the screen broken? i click the talk button and i get a "sorry , the process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly.please try again." i was going to try and install Aloysius 1.0 v2 to see if the talk would work then although it seems alot more difficult to install a custom rom then the touch pro. i tried to find a Android Rooting in 1-click (limited time only… until it gets patched) to no avail
thank for any help
Try re-running the official RUU via your PC. See this thread to download it (scroll down to post #2 for the RUU): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Don't worry about following all those rooting steps in the first long post #1. Just scroll down to post #2 and download the .5 RUU file, then run it from your PC with the phone plugged into USB.
It will completely wipe the phone and revert it back to factory stock settings. If your touch screen is still broken/messed up after this, then yes there's something wrong with the screen and you should take the phone back or replace it or whatever.
take it into sprint. hell you may even luck out and get an evo or epic out of it. i hear they are trying to push those phones on customers.
sorry i did not mention that i bought it at a swap meet for $30 and the phone seemed locked and said too many password attempts and the touch never worked , so i wiped it. i noticed on the side of the screen by the voulme controls , looks like some tweeker tried to maybe bull the battery out and did not know how to open the back.lol and tried to pry in that area a kinda bent the shiny piece slightly below the - vol button and cracked that chrome plated piece that seems to be inbetween the screen and the back case. i will still try the RUU and check it out, i never did try to replace the digitizer on the touch since the walkthrough seemed too detailed. i wounder about the hero.
trying to reset using RUU although says, error 170 usb i tried to install HTC sync can cant connect with it either. i dont understand how to properly install the drivers i suppose.
any advise
Does it just have the white HTC screen. And you can use all hard buttons but nothing else???
If so its because your phone was rooted and then someone did a factory reset. It happened to mine. Its a way of them locking you out of your phone after rooting.. I ran the ruu back to 2.1 and then rerooted it.
Try this RUU..

Also you just download the htc sync here..

no the OS seems to be functioning fine , except for everytime i push send it get the "sorry! the process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"
so i tried to power up holding on to vol + and doing the RUU as well as having the phone as normal as can be and running RUU and i get
error(170) usb connection error
rom update utility cannot connect to your phone.
i installed the file HTC_Sync_2.0.40.exe and ran RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.exe when told powered the phone and clicked next and always get the 170usb error. i still am guessing that the drivers are not installed properly as when i plug in the phone i dont hear the normal usb sound made by the pc. also i never noted that i dont have the offical usb sync cable i have 2 of them , one is shape the same as the area to insert it on the hero, it is the htc touch pro cable . and the other usb cable is the basic one that works for alot of stuff that it fits into, except for motorola`s cell phones to charge them.lol
heeeeeelp
Bringing back more old threads
I am having this exact problem with an HTC Hero. I started before it had ever been rooted. I have rooted, loaded custom roms, wiped everything, ran two diff RUUs, and replaced the digitizer.
If I boot the phone to the HBoot, at the top of the screen it says TOUCH PANEL-fail.
Wondering if it is hardware or software at this point. I had it working earlier today somehow after doing a full wipe, but when i reactivated the phone and started dialing a number to test it it froze up. Rebooted and it was back to the same problem.
I have CM6 running and love it. Props to the Cyanogenmod XDA crews for making a non-techie such as myself about to stumble through the process. It took some bouncing around between websites but I was able to get it done.
However, I did have a blackout week over the holidays and did drop my phone a few times. Long story short, my smart phone is no longer so smart looking.
I need to get it back to stock just to make sure I don't have any warranty/insurance issues. When I take it in to get replaced.
I tried running the RUU from htc.com and that didn't work. It doesn't get past the Bootloader phase. Something about the phone isn't connected to the USB (even though it is & the comp recognizes it as a android device). This happens when the black screen comes on with the silver HTC letters.
I thought maybe it was the fact that I had a different baseband version (necessary to get Cyanogenmod on there) and when I try to boot into recovery mode to flash the official radio it gets stuck at the white screen with green htc letters on it.
Some things I just noticed as well, I am unable to have the PC HTC Sync software recognize my phone.
Thanks for the help.
I figured it out, don't worry about it

What was wrong with it?
please state what you did to fix the bootloader screen cause im stuck there too
My phones battery died over the weekend, I got it charged back up, the phone was acting real sluggish so I restarted it, came back a few hours later and noticed it was still on the white HTC screen, I watched it for a few minutes and noticed it would sit on this screen for about a minute, then go dark, then back to the HTC screen and we go round and round.
I tried hboot, all the options do this. Fastboot, recovery even factory restore all trigger this infinite loop...
What has happened? How can I fix this?
Note that it was a stock phone, no mods, no custom ROMs or anything else. It was OTA updated to ICS about a week ago, and has been fine since then.

So can you get to the bootloader and send fastboot commands?
Sorry I am not a modder or anything like that, do you mean select the "fastboot" option?
I tried running fastboot reboot from my PC while it was plugged in and my phone was in the hboot area, and it just says "waiting for device" and never does anything.
If I select "fastboot" from the hboot menu the phone restarts, a bar goes up the side of the HTC screen then about 30 or so seconds later it goes black and repeats process.
Ah, yes I can. I figured it out, plug into USB, select fastboot, then it goes to USB. I was able to reboot the phone.
EDIT: Tried running the update from HTC's website, took it about 5 - 10 minutes or so. It completed without issues, however the phone is still doing this infinite rebooting cycle...
You mean the RUU? And for ICS? That is supposed to be the ultimate method to unbrick and return to stock. Sounds like the OTA messed something up. When you say go dark you mean the screen goes of then it comes back to the HTC screen? This is probably obvious but have you tried a battery pull? Taking out aim card anything is worth a shot.

Yes the RUU update from HTC's website. The phone started this morning without issues. Then after a restart it starts the whole cycle over again.
I have been running Slim ICS on my Captivate for a month or two now. I have been on version 3.6 for awhile now and have had no issues.
Today however, My phone was acting a little odd, and I decided that it had been awhile since my last reboot, so I held the power button, clicked reboot, (not into recovery) put the phone back in my pocket once I was sure it was rebooting and went on my way.
30 minutes later I took my phone out of my pocket and looked at the screen. It was still on the Slim ICS screen and I thought maybe it was looping, but it never rebooted itself or went back to the AT&T screen. It just stayed on the Slim ICS screen until I pulled the battery.
It has done the same thing every time I try to turn it on.
Download mode wont work (my cappy doesn't have the 3-button combo, so I have to use a jig.) I can get it in download mode but my computers wont read it. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, I tried different chords (on each computer.) and nothing works.
I'm kind of at my witts end, as it is my alarm in the mornings and I rely heavily on my phone. any suggestions on what to do? or is it time to check if I can upgrade...?
(P.S. I apologize for the sloppy formatting, it's 2:30 am and I've been trying to make this work for 2 hours...)
EDIT: I kept trying and eventually got my phone to read as gadget serial instead of unknown, flashed back to stock and am now getting back to ICS. To anyone in a similar situation, just keep trying and hopefully it'll pay off.
Do you have recovery mode?

None of the button combos work on my device (none of them ever have) and I cant get my computer to read my phone, so I can't use ADB to reboot in recovery. All I can really do right now is get into download mode with my jig, but none of the computers in my house will read it with any of my chords.
Have u tried "Mobile Odin" by Chainfire ?? Find it in the Market...uuugghh...the Play Store. :/

alright, it was a huge headache... but I got back to gingerbread stock.
I'll tell how I did it:
Deleted all installed samsung drivers (and rebooted computer).
Go to download mode (I used the jig, if you have button combos, it's probably easier)
Plug the device into the computer and hope to god it reads as Gadget serial
I then used this to restore to stock (it failed 3 times before it worked... everytime it got just a little bit further, until it finished.)
So ultimately, after a nightmare of a time and a lot of headache, I'm thankfully back at stock, and working on getting back to ICS.
although the process is difficult, as odin still won't find my phone (heimdall does though)
Basic Info:
HTC One phone purchased in Hong Kong through a relative, so no idea who the provider/brand it's RUU is under
Now running on T-Mobile network in Texas
Never had been tinkered with before (Rooting/Flash-ROM/etc.)
Never had issues with it aside from only getting 3G internet (had used 4G on previous phone, same plan)
This all started randomly earlier today when the phone was idling on the desk, I was going to check something but it won't respond. I didn't have any updates pending/installing and only had a game open. First idea was no power so I plugged it into the wall, but the charging light wasn't lit so I assumed a dead internal battery. After trying a few more times, it turned back on! But this time it gives me a black screen after the white screen with the HTC logo in the middle, and to further annoy me it keeps restarting and repeating this. I tried the Hboot screen via Power+DownVolume but none of the options worked.
I tried all the options:
Fastboot (Reboot + Reboot Hboot)
Recovery
Factory Reset
Nothing worked at all and I've already scanned the forums for something similar but nothing comes up. Someone please help me fix it, I need it for work and can't afford another day like this. T-Mobile guys were no help and Best Buy guys did no better. Thanks in advance for all the help!
