New voice search from Google installation (2.2 only) - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone been able to install this yet? I'm running CM6 8-10 and I get an installation failure everytime. I tried what the EVO guys are doing by removing the Voicesearch.apk, rebooting, and installing the new one from the market but no beans.

all i had to do was:
adb shell
rm /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
rm /system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
then REBOOT (didn't work otherwise), then install Voice Search (the new voice command app) and Google Search (the widget). credit goes to pugsby in the evo sub-forum.
still can't get chrome-to-phone to install though ("installation unsuccessful") even after manually removing the version that was already installed and rebooting. not sure why that's happening.

I don't have permission to leave comments on the referenced site, but I needed to change the last instruction from:
pm uninstall com.google.android.googlequickSearchBox
to:
pm uninstall com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox
(note the lower case letters) in order for it to work for me ...

That's odd you can't get chrome2phone to work. I just downloaded it and plugged in my info and was good to go. Took a few secs to send to my phone.
Should've checked the market before I uninstalled my search, not that I use it much, because now the voice search and google search don't show up. Can't follow the QR codes because googles doesn't work. And uninstall and reinstall of googles fixed the FC problem.

Microsoft Security Essentials is detecting and supposedly fixing a daily Win32/Alureon.H attack, and ask me to reboot daily as a result. They also report system access attempts originating from China every few days.
Avast (at least the free version) it is then!

Not getting mutlitouch in maps 3.4.0

I've installed maps from both the market, and the thread in XDA dev, but although the app says it's 3.4.0, I'm not able to multitouch.
I'm on CM 4.2.14.1 with the 10meg hack.
Also, the main application I use (GeoBeagle) is now crashing with the new map. I'm wondering what I can do to make sure I've got everything installed correctly, or how to revert back to a previous version where I can at least still go geocaching.
You can either rm by going into the Terminal emulator and typing this in:
Code:
$ su
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cd /system/app
# rm Maps.apk
# mount -o r,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
This will remove the modified version.
afterwards go into the Market and download the newest un modified maps application.
thanks, yeah, i did that... however, when I go to market, it says that Google Maps is "installed" even though the options for "open" and "uninstall" are greyed out.
I am indeed in a pickle.

Try rebooting.
if you can download the maps from the market then hoorah
if not:
Then try to flash the modded maps back in.
if it still doesnt work after you flash it and try it again, go on the market and you should be able to download the original maps 3.4.0.
otherwise the last resort would be to wipe and re flash the rom.
sorry if this causes any inconveniences.
Yeah, I did get the 3.4.0 from Market working again, but it still does NOT perform multitouch. Is this only available in the moded version on G1?
*edit* I did get multitouch working by installing the update from market first, and then adding the modded version afterwards. Geobeagle is still crashing, however.

Happy to hear it.
and yeah ive been seeing some posts where people have been saying that somethings have been crashing.
but it should work out fine. and maybe the dev of this app will make a modded ver that wont crash GeoBeagle

I used option 2 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627582
Okay, so now I'm wondering if i've destroyed whatever file lets applications access the maps program, because none of the geocaching apps work when I try to show the map. I had done some wildcard deletions in my desperation in trying to fix the maps.
Can anyone point me towards what I can do to fix that? As in what files might need replacing? I've already re-flashed CM 4.2.12.1, but that didn't repair any associations afaict.

Depends on what you deleted.
2 Options.
1.Find out exactly what you deleted and maybe we will be able to help you out.
2.Full Wipe and Re-Flash
These are the only options I see at least.

frustrating since others with CM6 nightly have it
I've been working on this, here is what I have so far.
adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3
Successfully remounts the system partition as read/write
adb shell rm -f /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
rm: cannot remove '/system/app/VoiceSearch.apk': directory not empty
(however the file is now gone: adb shell ls /system/app)
adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.voicesearch
Failure
(At this point, Settings->Applications->Manage Applications still shows the Voice Search application as installed, not surprisingly)
adb reboot
Reboot the phone, upon booting back up, the phone is sluggish and slow. An attempt to download the application from the Market fails with the same package signature error.
Does anybody have any idea what the heck is going on?

worked like a champ...the new voice search is friggin amazing...
I was able to get the new Voice Search and widget working, but by using the above method the hardware Search button no longer brings up anything. If you long press the button you can choose the Voice Search option, but a regular press doesn't do anything. Anyway to fix it so a regular press goes to the regular search window again?
How is this any different/better than the built-in Google Voice search?

It's the most recent official update by Google. You can read about it at http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/08/just-speak-it-introducing-voice-actions.html. It's a lot quicker with recognition and they've added a bunch of actions you can do like sending emails or finding directions.

Worked for me as well. Now, in my case the SearchBox was named "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk". As a side note, I also backed up these files before deleting them. This is how you do it, in case you want to:
Code:
**before starting [B]adb shell[/B], at your DOS command prompt:
cd <backup folder on your PC>\
adb pull /system/apps/VoiceSearch.apk
adb pull /system/apps/GoogleSearchBox.apk (or in my case GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk)
that's it. Now you have a backup copy of the original files delivered in your CM rom, in case you want them back for (I see no) reason. I'd assume Cyanogen will fix this in no time, so this is more of a temp thing anyways.

Trying to find a remapping fix to the search button. It happens only on the Launcher (i.e. Maps, browser, etc) are not broken, just the search button on the launcher.

Oh, god no. My phone and pushing are not a good combination.
Can't connect my phone using ADB.
When I want to start up my pc and my phone is connected, it just freezes at the Splash screne until I pull my phone out. Then it boots normally.
Yeah that's probably because it's odex'd. I don't really remember on wich one I tried. If I'm not mistaken it was on Clemsyn's Final Froyo Build.
Downloaded it somewhere off Megaupload. Got the link from some video on YouTube.
I've managed to odex the updated market, and use Terminal Emulator to transfer it to my /system partition overwriting my original market, and it seems to work. Granted I had a gapps FC at boot, but restarted without a hitch.
So far no other FCs, and Market is fully working. Though not sure how many apps I still have available. :-/

same here on polaris with scoot's Kernel With Separate Cache Partition.
also no dialog to choose between charge only/hard drive/etc when connecting to booted pc via usb.
adb does work though, just make sure the drivers are installed on your pc, connect and wait for >120s before calling "adb wait-for-device". once your prompt reappears you are connected and ready for e.g. "adb shell".
use "adb kill-server" and "adb wait-for-device" when you get disconnected (not exactly stable) - i use WiFi Keyboard and WiFi File Explorer from market instead.

Market apps

I have notice this thing. My friend and I have a captivate. In the market I have some apps that is not seen in his market. I was wondering if this had to do with the market update? Or something like carrier thing for roms...

P.s. the specific app I was unable to find on my friends captivate was 'Google Korean ime '(its a keyboard)

Since he is rooted, but still on stock ROM, you need to make a change to your settings.db file to allow non market application installation (0 to 1 type of change). Do the following if you have the Android SDK installed:
adb shell
su
cd /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings
sqlite3 settings.db
update secure set value = "1" where name = "install_non_market_apps";
.quit
Then reboot your phone.
If you don't ADB you'll want to either install it or you can try one of a couple of "one-clickers" on the boards. It's been a while since I've done it myself and if I recall correctly I installed the sqlLite add-on in Firefox to change this setting on my phone.
A quick search found the following link here which looks like it'll do the trick, though I've personally never used it. Look around, as there are others, and decide what would be best/easiest for you.
Or flash with CWM

Cache is greyed out. I guess, nothing in a cache to clear. Data... on the other side, has 136KB, but am little afraid to clear that one. Thank you for your suggestion. I have actually googled this error message in relation to Nexus One, and it seems that there is just one more person with that same issue. Can I really be that lucky?

Hope that someone will come-up with solution. Otherwise, hopefully Google is aware of the issue, and will fix it the next incremental version of Google Music.
Well I can't download Google music because of my location but for clearing data you should be fine I have done it before and just to make sure I went ahead and did it just now and all it does is ask you to accept the terms and conditions again. So that might be something to try.
This is what Google music team sent me about my failure to install music. I've never changed my default set location. Idk it might work for some but not me.
Thanks for the additional information. We've now received confirmation from a number of users that this issue is caused by setting the default installation location to the SD card. This is a developer tools option that can be reversed by running the following command:

Did you make sure that you have everything set to install to internal? If you are running CyanogenMod, there is an option to do it under Settings -> CM Settings -> Applications, if you are running stock, there was a command through adb to make sure it is set properly (but you had to change it from earlier for it to not work).
