I can't take a photo of my screen but I clearly see horizontal banding in black-on-white text pages...they're like this:
text-text-text-text-banding-banding-banding
text-text-banding-banding-banding-banding
text-text-text-text-text-text-text-text-banding
and so on...sorry for this weird explaination but couldn't find a way to describe them since english is not my mother language....
those stripes are white, more white than the page background...
i took a screenshot, and viewed it on the pc...no white stripes there, so it's not software related ...
anyone else have/had this issue????
send to htc is the only solution? (obviously it has unlocked bootloader)
yes this has been discussed before. the best example is when viewing google's forums, you can see alternating bands that line up with all the text rows. and in between is pure white, while the text rows show slightly darker.
that's just the way it is for now. no fix has ever been released.
thanks for the answer =)
so is my phone defective or is it like that for every nexus out there?
EDIT: sidenote-to me it's the exact opposite, the stripes where text sits are more white than the rest of the white background that is a little darker

Hey guys,
I've got a brand new HTC Touch Diamond. On certain screens in particular the Contacts, Messaging, SMS or the screen to select the Avatar for farvourite People, there seems to be a colour gradient on the screen in that the right portion of my screen is towards the grey shade wherelse the left portion is whiter in colour. Is this part of the theme or a standard feature or is this a defect on my unit?
The thing is I don't get this issue on the 'Align Screen' screen which has a similar white background, nor do I get this gradient on Program and Settings menus.
Could someone please help me confirm?
Thanks.
Cheers.
*bump*
Pls help???
I called HTC regarding this issue and they told me it's just part of the graphics theme but I'm not entirely convinced though...
Thanks.

You could try taking a screenshot and copy that to your computer. If the gradient appears there then its a part of the graphics in the theme.. But if it does not appear on the screenshot on the pc. then you can consider it as a failure.
I checked contacts (touchflo) -> all people (left softkey), and yeah there's a slight gradient from white to a very very light grey. (Going from left to right)
Thanks so much for the great help guys..... I'll take a screenshot later just to confirm the issue....
A simple test is, go to settings > today,...and change theme to Windows Mobile Default / Green. See if the light grey change to fade blue / green?
I can confirm 99.9% is the theme....
it is normal....

Thanks. Yes I've tried that before starting this thread. The gradient does follow the theme colour but I thought it was a backlight issue.. i.e. that portion of the screen not lit properly hence it appears darker regardless of the theme's colour.

then you fire up word mobile, and create a new document.
You should have a full white background......

Yes tried that.. I don't get the gradient on white pages such as the 'Align Screen' page, documents, IE, even the b/g of Programs and Settings looks perfect.
So it's safe to assume I don't have to send my unit back for warranty yeah? I just wanted to be sure before sticking my invisibleSHIELD on
btw, what screen/body protector are you using? I might have a spare invisibleSHIELD if you're interested.

That should be the theme issue....
you can try UITweaker,
go to TdyScheme Changer > change all the 4 list(left 1 & 2 + right 1 & 2) color to white...
cheers,...
I tried taking the a few screenshots and yes the gradient is there when viewed from the PC as well although less apparent. But yeah it's definitely the theme then.
When I was on the phone with HTC the girl also advised me to have my phone sent in to be checked... until I asked her "shouldn't you confirm this isn't normal before we proceed further"? lol
I was just wondering if a white background would consume more power than a black background for the theme settings.. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Depends on what phone you are using. The samsung and dell with their samoled screen consume more power with a white background. The htc phones are using s-lcd which means it doesn't matter if it is white or black. I prefer the white background on my HD7 it looks nicer.
Oh cool.. Im using a HD7.. Was using black in thinking that it will prolong battery life.. Now that you mention that, i'm switching to white =) Thanks =)
Black looks best.
I like black but it annoys me that the fonts on black look horrible. For instance, in settings, the small fonts distort when scrolling up and down. This doesn't occur on white. Nor does it occur on the Omnia 7 even when on black. So perhaps this is a HD7 issue, or perhaps it is just my HD7. Am interested to know if others have noticed it.
I hadn't noticed that. Now I'm bugged by it. Thanks.

Could you elaborate on this distorting text? I haven't noticed anything on my HD7 with black background. Text looks wonderful on this screen and Windows Phone 7.

just open the Settings page and scroll up and down slowly. Notice how the small subtext is a lot tougher to read while scrolling. That's what he is referring to I believe.
The text issue is called "ghosting" and is due to the low quality LCD panel on the HD7, which has a very low pixel response time.
It bugged me a lot on a black background. It's not noticeable on white.
Yep, as the other guys say. A better description than my original one is that the text has a "shimmer" when scrolling. It sort of fades out.
Rather than it being a panel issue, I think is might be a cleartype or font smoothing type of issue. Later on I'll do up a bitmap image with some text on it, and see if the problem occurs. If yes then it's a crap panel and if no then maybe fonts/cleartype/software and hope.
Another problem with the black background is you do see the backlight ever so slightly. Yes, I knew this, when I (now somewhat regretfully) chose it over the Omnia 7. Be good if Microsoft gave us more colour options, I'd probably use a very dark grey if available. My £99 ZTE Blade has far nicer blacks than my HD7 Sorry to rant. No need to flame. I think the HD7 will be the great WP7 hacker/modder device and this alone is enough for me.
I created a bitmap and emailed it to myself. The shimmering effect did occur when moving around. So it does seem like a screen or a screen driver problem, and nothing to do with fonts and the like.

I thought it was because grey on black has less contrast than grey on white. Could you do the same but instead of grey use white.
I have just again compared the scrolling of the settings page on my HD7 with my Trophy and there is a huge difference!!
On the Trophy's SLCD screen there is no ghosting and everything just flows and stays readable all the time.
Everything is just so much more vivid and vibrant on the Trophy !
It is indeed a shame that HTC have not used a SLCD screen for their flagship model
I've stayed with white I tried black for a bit but it did not look as contrasty as hoped.
Sorry tbk21, I can't try it as I sold the phone. Got loads of interest on Gumtree. HD7 is not the one for me. The speakers, the screen and the slow loading of sdcards. Sticking with my clunky Android for now. Maybe I'll be back for the second wave of WP7 phones.
Has anyone noticed the massive ghosting on the HD7's LCD when using the black theme? I never really paid attention to it until I switched back from the white to the black theme, but when scrolling a list with white text or white lines on a black background (calendar in a good example), the LCD leaves a massive trail of ghosting text and lines (resembles a smear effect). Makes me want to bang my head against a wall...
It's because the bad black in HTC's screens.. Put theme in "light" and scroll on photos or something like that (without black) and you will see it moves perfectly smooth.
i sent my HD7 to service and they replaced the LCD and touch panel for me.... the screen is failing, it will only get worse....
send it for replcement befor the warrenty runs out...
Hi guys!
I'm having a strange issue with my SGSA, basically when there is a bright image, the colors fade to left and to right.
I know it sounds difficult to explain (I'll provide picture as soon as I can), but I can make an example: on the new Facebook Messenger my messages are in a blue baloon and that "blue" create a green shadow that go all the way to the left side of the screen.
Does it happen to some of you too?
PS: I'm on CyanogenMod 10.2, latest build
Looking at the screen very closely, I can see what can sort of be described as screen dithering. This is most obvious with a solid colored background or an app with a solid colored background. Looking closely, you can see that all the pixels are not uniformly one colored.
I don't see this on my Galaxy S3.
Anyone else notice this?
Edit: To be more accurate, it seems like it's a screen hardware issue. There are faint horizontal, fuzzy, pixelated lines.
