Out of internal memory from GPS or lagfix? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now it has happened to me twice in 2 days, the internal memory has / is about to run out.
It started yesterday when I was experimenting with the GPS and its settings, and used My tracks and GPS test alot. The phone was then stock JF3 with the first version of RyanZA lagfix.
After 2-3 hourly experimenting with the settings on the GPS, I was warned for low internal memory and eventually it ran out and tied the phone completely.
This morning I flashed a fresh JM5 + Samset 1.9d + Ryan lagfix v2.3. Max 5 installed appz and after 2-3 hours of experimentation with GPS, it alert me for low internal memory again!
Anyone that have a clue what it could be and what it is that the chaps up my memory? Can one check in anyway what it is at?
The GPS would save a lot of temporary data that is not removed is of course no one here and there should many have suffered.
Could it be due to the lag fix? cause it has moved the folders around.
Or is it the GPS itself or the programs that uses the GPS that loogs a lot of data that is not deleted?
The programs I have used today since the new installation is GPS test and My tracks and the setup program for the GPS, LBSTestMode, that can be accessed via the * # * # 1472365 # * # *
Edit
I did some more testing and when I run GPS test the internal memory went from 185 to 175 in 2 minutes. Efter 2 minutes with My tracks, down to 168mb. and after a couple of minutes with google maps, down to 161mb.
So something is fishy when I use the GPS.
I installed the GPS fix last night, and this morning. Perhaps it could be that?!

yes, it's the gps fix
fixing it should be simple, i dont know the exact path(s)
1. delete /data/gps/log(s)
2. open /data/gps/jupiter.xml and search for enablelog=true (smth like this). change it to =false and you should be fine

What GPS Fix is that?

Some development builds came out and have the logging on for the gps, so it just uses all the space up writing out a massive log file of all the gps activity.

Quick GPS question...

I have just updated my ROM to "Dutty's WM6.1 Hybrid v2 5.2.19716/5.2.19700" and at the same time installed TomTom.
It can take quite a while to pick up a lock the first time the software is booted but if I close and open TomTom without rebooting the phone the second time is much quicker (almost instant). I have just tried rebooting the phone and it goes through the same slow process the first time tomtom is booted and then quick following that. Is this normal behaviour for GPS on the device (not holding GPS info when the phone is rebooted) or is it an issue with the ROM or Radio. If its the radio is their anyone in the UK who can recommend the best radio for battery life and GPS.
Cheers,
Michael

This is pretty normal for GPS especially on these devices. It takes a while to get the first fix after a reset, but subsequent ones are quicker.
You may be able to speed up this process by using the QuickGPS tool to download cache data of satellite locations.
Also, try and use GPSTest to get the lock first. Many people use the GPSTest application and keep it running in the background as it tends to keep a good lock on things.
Adjust the baud rate with GPStest.
cheers for the responses... i will try the GPSTest thing...
KDKobes: what change does adjusting the baud rate make? quicker to lock?
I'm running the new, stock 6.1 Rom, and the only criticisim I have of it is the really slow initial GPS lock. The first time I use it after a soft reset or reboot, it can take anything in the region of 10-15 minutes, which I really don't think is right - I'm positive the original Rom was better at this. Subsequent fixes are much quicker, but if you find yourself needing the GPS and you happen to have recently rebooted, chance are you'll be well past your destination by the time it picks up, which is not good.
Quick GPS appears to be behaving as it always has - whenever I check it has recent data showing, downloaded through Activesync as normal - but it's almost as if that data's not being used in this Rom.
I should mention I'm seeing this behaviour in both Tom Tom and Live Search... it always does get a lock eventually, so there doesn't appear to be a problem with the GPS itself. Has anyone got any insight into this?

The baud rate is used by the internal COM port to interface with the GPS controller. It is the same deal like the speed of a modem...2400....4800...9600, etc.
Honestly with the amount of data that a GPS passes (which is not that much) I don't know if it makes a difference if it is set low. However, I always set mine high because faster is better, right so, might as well.

Where would you even set that though? I played with GPS Tool for a while, but it appeared to forget whatever port setting I used next time it ran anyway, so presumably it only affects that session of GPS Tool, not the system as a whole. In TomTom there's no speed setting for the internal GPS either; it should all be handled by WM itself.

Yeah, I think that's right... you can set it inside GPSTest.
However, like I stated many people find that GPSTest gets the quickest lock and prefer to either open it first and/or leave it running in the background. I haven't used my GPS that much, but I do find that this works.
It at least allows me to see what is going on with the lock. If I start Google Maps it will either work or not with GPS, but not really show me what's going on. GPSTest will allow me to see if I have a lock or not and then open up my other apps for use.
I just realised, I'm talking about the HTC GPS Tool, while you're talking about GPS Test - which is that, the Chartcross one?
You should try IGO8

Hello!
I have experienced exactly the same problem as you have with TomTom.
I have both a "Tytn II" and a HTC Advantage (X7500).
When using TomTom on the X7500 the GPS takes time to fix a position, 15-20 min or more is not unusual after a soft reset.
Then when it has fixed the position it is EXTREMLY slow when it comes to calculating the route!
I live in Sweden and I often drive to Germany, and when calculating the route from Sweden to Germany it takes over 3 min to finish!
Then we have the issue with the struggling graphics, (Of course I have been told that TomTom has trouble with VGA displays, and I find that to be very true.) the map is very slow and sometimes it stops completly for a few secounds!
On my Tytn II however the map is not struggling the same way, and it calculates much faster then on the X7500, Why? I dont know!
X7500 is a much faster device so it beats me!
The GPS lock is however almost as slow on the Tytn II as it is on the X7500, no matter if I have used quick GPS to download data or not!
A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a navigation program called IGO8, I decided to try it, and believe me when I say that I will never go back to TomTom again!
First of all the GPS lock is almost instant with IGO8, from a soft reset it finds a lock within maybe 2 min at most! And then it seems that it somehow remembers the position and the next time you start the program it will have a fix in secounds!
Then it calculates much faster, I tryed to calculate the route from Sweden to Germany on my X7500 and it was finishes under 20 secounds! (Compare that to over 3 minutes with TomTom on the same device!)
It supports VGA screens, so the map floats much better on my X7500.
Next thing is that there is more maps for IGO 8 so it covers much more of "mother earth" if you want to navigate in a foreign country!
It also has 3D terrain, and can even show buildings in 3D! (Only works in some places!)
It has a very simple and logical interface that is much easyer to understand then TomTom, and it is skinnable and very customizable!
So if you are serious about having a great navi I would strongly recommend you to try IGO 8! I can promise you will not be dissapointed!
Oh and buy the way, I dont work for IGO either!

I have problems getting software on my O2 Stellar to recognise the internal gps. I've tried a couple of different programs (TomTom & GPSTuner) and also fiddled around with the com ports in both the software and on the Stellar (using the External gps app in settings) but still no recognition of the internal gps.
I caleed O2 and no one could help, in fact they didn't even know it had internal gps!
I've seen GPSTest mentioned a few times. It's not on my Stellar - where can I get it?
Am I missing something?
Help please!
Thanks

Get GPSTest here
You can either manually set it to a COM port or have it autoscan. I believe some ROMs identify it as COM3 and others COM4, so probably best to do an autoscan. It might take a few minutes to find it, and then another few to get a lock. But after that it generally starts up and locks within a minute or two (in my experience).

Wanted: Share your *WORKING* GPS config

Hi folks!
I got those **** GPS problems with my TP and worked myself now several days through dozens of related threats. Unfortunately, there doesnt seem to be a "one-best-way" but several (even some contradicting) suggestions... - and no Wikipage so far
After playing now with a lot of suggestions (registry tweak, killing the logfiles, gpsgate / splitter, AstroGPSLauncher, some mortscripts, about 6 different RadioRoms and maybe all baudrates/config combos of 5 different navigation systems) i got now really stuck and kinda frustrated. (Read: Yes, i used the search function!) Maybe i should burn that device - OR - some of you share their GPS configs / fixes / history so that i / we can write together a comprehensive (hopefully leading to a working solution) wikipage
I would be highly interested in:
o Working solution yes or no?
o ROM & RadioROM
o Did u have GPS problems at all? Which ones? No Fix? Slow fix? inaccurate? Jumping around position / loosing the signal each and every second? Lags?
o Could you solve it?
o How?
I hope with some of those working configurations it should be possible to replicate a working device...
Thx in advance!
First feedback with working combinations (QuickGPS as standard not included):
#####################################################
ROMeOS 1.60.1 - Radio 1.02.25.28 - fix < 1min - no Tweaks
ROMeOS 1.51 GER - Radio 1.02.25.19 - fix <> 30sec - Portsplitter
Da_G v2.03-MSVC - Radio v1.02.25.28 - fix < 1min - (kickstart for TomTom)
NATF 3.2 ROM -1.08.25.20M1 - fix < 1 min - no Tweaks
ROMeOSĀ² v1.60.2 - 1.08.25.20M1 - fix < 15 sek - QuickGPS disabled, PagePool 32MB
LantisOS Rom -.32 ATT Radio - fix < 1min
#####################################################
EDIT: If possible, please post your initial fix time using VisualGPSCE outside with a clear view of the sky (no kick starting allowed, just fire up VisualGPSCE and start a timer)? Set VisualGPSce to COM4: at 115200 bps (speed doesn't really matter as long as its >4800). : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3116607&postcount=7
Please share your config here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=GPS Issues
Thanks to Sleuth for the standartisation hint!
Did you change your Navigating Software to the new ports of the comsplitter with the GPS Signal? I had the same secondly changing signal- no signal, but after installing comportsplitter and changing the settings of the Navigating sw to the new ports there is a constant strong signal there with no lag.... Using ROMeOS 1.51 Ger and Radio 1.02.25.19. I tried nearly all radios, but most of them cause a big battery leak (for my TP)

Boris
P.S. I have a fix in nearly 30 seconds, but only after clearing the gps cache with the htc tools. the first fix took about 45 Minutes, but now its at half a minute. I deactivatet agps as recommended in many threats in several forums, but i use quickGPS
Thx for your information! (Sure i changed to the new Comports *g*)
Using ROMeOS 1.60.1 and radio 1.02.25.28 i get a fix in under a minute, just by using QuickGPS included in the rom.
Same radio configuration with Da_G 2.03 (see sig). VisualGPSce can fix outside in < 1 minute. TomTom needed to be "kick started" by another pgm but could see the GPSID natively (gave the built-in gps option in device configuration). After omitting the Flags value=2 (GPSID driver is unloadable) in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\GPSID then TomTom was able to warm start the GPS in < 1 minute as well without needing a "kick start".
Currently, TomTom updates the display 3-4 times/sec and has little if no lag (cross streets on map pass by at the same time as the car does at 40mph). The only thing I continue to suffer from is "speed lag" whereby TomTom doesn't track with the speedometer when I slow down to 0mph. This can result in the car display ending up in the intersection on the map when the car is stopped (then it "snaps back"). I'm going to see how TomTom 6.x deals with this so I can get an apples to apples comparison with my Tilt which didn't suffer from speed lag.
Could I suggest Standardizing our tests?
What's your initial fix time using VisualGPSCE outside with a clear view of the sky (no kick starting allowed, just fire up VisualGPSCE and start a timer)? Set VisualGPSce to COM4: at 115200 bps (speed doesn't really matter as long as its >4800).
The first time you get a fix on any given day should be the one you report as this will be the longest. The reason is that QuickGPS ephemeris data will be used which gives approximate satellite positions. Subsequent fixes (try it!) will be lightning quick because you will be using actual ephemeris data downloaded from the satellites which gives precise sky locations for the time duration that the birds remain visible.
I am using NATF 3.2 ROM and 1.08.25.20M1 Radio. I use OCN8 and it gets <1 minute fix. No changes done to comp port or baud rate. However, it takes tweaking got get fix for Google Maps in little over 1 minute. I do experience LAG on OCN8 though.
I used to use Elice RC2 and 1.08.25.20M1 ROM. LAG was very very minimal but took more time to fix.
Here's the installation cab for VisualGPSce btw. It's freeware.

Yep VGPSCE is a classic tool
http://dl.htc.com/downloadfiles/Rom...ned_Raphael_52.44.25.24_1.08.25.20M1_Ship.exe
I flashed this ROM and it works perfect for me.
my config (signature) fixes up under 15 seconds when moving, <1minute when standing on one place. QuickGPS disabled, PagePool 32MB
For me prior to updating my ROM I could not get a GPS fix no matter what I did. Some of the newer ROMs use new GPS Drivers. This must have fixed my problem. I tried others older ROMS and no Fix, I tried a few Radios and no Fix.
I'm using LantisOS Rom, and the .32 ATT Radio. My GPS works with AGPS enabled or disabled, it doesn't matter.
I still have some lag, but its not too bad.
Here is what I do to get a fix.
1. I use QuickGPS to download the data.
2. I Launch Chartcross GPS Test to get a fix usually in under a minute if I havent used it for awhile. If I used it earlier in the day i can get a fix in like 5 seconds.
3. I either close or minimize GPS Test and launch my GPS program. (Google maps, Live Search, & iGuidance all work for me)
P.S. I do not use HTC GPS Tool as I've never got it to work. I have VisualGPSce which is good for viewing some data, but it seems that Chartcross GPS Test gets a fix way faster.
I added a short, unprofessional Wiki Page so that we can collect this information more efficiently...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=GPS Issues
Please feel free to add your data and improve the page in language, style, structure etc.
For me totally not understandable: The first evening i tried with Romeos 1.704 & GPS it was impossible to get a fix. I cleared cache with HTC GPS Tool and did all the other things, tried with visual gps, gps mouse, glopus and others but i didnt get a fix, even after running 3 hours in the night the sattelites remained red.
next day, when i tried to work on this problem in the same room, same place, i had a fix in a few seconds....

P.S. My Radio is version 1.10.25.25
I was starting to have problems with AT&T stock ROM (1.95.502.5 WWE) & radio 1.02.25.32. All I had to do was disable A-GPS, use quick GPS to download data and then use GPS test to lock on to the birds. Also I have noticed that it becomes a lot quicker to get a signal without a case. Using a metal case sometimes it would become impossible for me to get a fix.

I remember 2 things that are importand(that I dont know how to setup in the PRO):
1. how the GPs handles static situations(dont remember the name) but the lag i get when i'm static or in a slow motion(traffic) is exactly what happend when i changed my BT GPS settings back in the day.
it was called "Static Navigation" : will "freeze" the position at very low speed to cancel out the drifting resulting from the natura "inaccuray" of GPS - should be disabled for pedestrian use - see below for details
2. Track Smoothing : wrill smoothen the track to remove the "jumps" resulting from the natural "inaccuracy" of the GPS system (10/15 meters) - disabled by default
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25575
Just got my Vario IV yesterday and quickly flashed mrvanx's Elite Project rc3 rom.
Stuck in traffic this morning I noticed that any gps app i tried would find the internal GPS, find satellites, lock, then disconnect. It kept doing this for any gps app.
I tried disabling a-gps and the problem vanished, all the apps worked properly and maintained a GPS lock for around 20 minutes.
Its been fine sofar since then...

no one know the NEMA codes to change the GPS's unit settings?
Vodafone Touch Pro
ROM: 1.90.162.5 GER
Radio: 1.02.25.19
I tried all
...tweaks with advanced config tool
...registry tweaks
nothing helped.
Switched to Navigon Mobile Navigator 7 (free download on their website inkl. maps for europe to test for 30 days) and thried that.
Works perfect. Bought it afterall...
GPS fix in about 3 - 15 seconds depending on the location (NO QuickGPS in use) // no more GPS lags.
Really strange...
after trying a lot of radioroms, tweaks etc. i decided to go back to the initial ROM of my t-mobile branded Vario 4: 1.02.25.19
Guess what? Instant fix. Great reception. No tweaking needed...
OK, battery life is worse than other roms... but GPS is fully working! The difference is not big - its HUGE! With all the other roms, gps was just unuseable (fixes around 20mins or never, disconnections each and every second etc.)!
This brings up a question: Did anybody research the gps related differences between several roms? It would be great to know why 1.02.25.19 is such a difference on our (t-mobile) device(s?)....
Hi,
first of all: I also have the GPS-fix-problem
Now my question:
In this Thread I found this link
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=GPS%20Issues
and at the bottom I found this link
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/uploads/JCEspi2005 GPS Lag Fix Raphael.cab
I installed this cab, but nothing has changed...so I'm wondering what this cab should have done? Or does I have to change something after installation?
pls help ^^
Greetings
Chris
BTW: I'm from Germany, sorry for any mistakes

On first run, all settings said they were wrong, I clicked "fix it" and all settings were changed except for #4..?
I won't nbe able to test the performance until I leave work in a couple of hours, but was wondering why the one setting stayed incorrect?
The team will put it on the list of possible bugs.
we will check it as soon as possible

this is an know issue we are working on it
Not bashing your program at all, but i honestly cant tell a difference, i still have a really hard time getting GPS to work on my touch pro
Is the .cab uninstallable? I mean, if I uninstall it, will it revert GPS settings to original? If not, can you provide a .cab for that, or tell us what to change in registry to revert settings? I'm asking because my GPS works fine, but I want to check is it even better with this patch. One more thing, can you tell me what were the exact results during tests regarding GPS lag - is this patch fixing the problem? GPS lag is inaccurate reading of the current position on the road - without the patch we usually get two seconds of lag behind the real position.
The main problem with the GPS is radio version. Registry settings make only a small difference. All radios barring the two new 1.14.xx.xx versions have an issue where if you restart the device, sometimes the GPS won't work. It will fix one or two satellites but never achieve lock, even after many minutes (this occurs only sometimes...if it works first time, try restarting the device a few times and attempting again). The 1.14 radios seem to work fine first go for me (with the exception being TomTom, which from what I've read has a known issue initializing the GPS...if you initialize it with another program first it will work fine, and on most attempts will even work fine with TomTom as the first program). While they have some other minor issues, the 1.14 radios are generally regarded as very good (personally for me .25.35 is a battery eater (uses about 10% overnight as opposed to 1-2% on .25.05) while .25.05 has issues when at very low reception where it thinks it is still connected but cannot actually manage to transfer data). I recommend anyone having issues with the GPS try either of these two radios before they bother doing anything else...
P.S. I might just add that it would seem that the GPS lag is largely software related...I'm told TomTom for iPhone (which has a very reliable GPS) also suffers from a noticable lag whereas I know their standalone devices don't. This would also explain persistent comments from people that some programs display less lag than others.

we hope that it will give it a boost to the gps system.
new version is uploaded
what exactly does this do?
What registry changes does it make?
this should be in software section, and there are already many threads out there discussing GPS issues.
if your having trouble with GPS are you using aGPS? enabling it will get u a lock in under 30 seconds.
See FF Nokia aGPS Settings in my signature.
well i now got to hard reset , my phone won't startup anymore
I did not notice an improvement, however I have not installed your fixed version.
guys,
sorry that some of you must hard reset your device.
but we fixed that in version 1.1
and fone_fanatic we dont have any problem any more with the gps.

With ENERGY ROM and 1.14.25.35 radio, I get GPS lock in 10-30 seconds on first use of the day and within 5-10 seconds in subsequent uses. Just note, that after hard reset or just new flash of ROM, the GPS lock may take more than 2 minutes, as it has to download all ephimeris data.

xperia X1 freeze when use GPS

Xperia X1 freeze. After 6 months I have problem with my xperia and gps. When I try to use internal GPS (whenever software), display freeze and I have to replace batery. I have tryied to flash another ROM, it works few hours and now I have same problem. Any ideas?
Hi,ok letĀ“s see, like you ive had the same problem, just when i was using any gps navigator the phone suddendly stopped and that was sucking me a lot so after that i started to think what could be the problem, and at the end after a lot of time i found where was the problem and what was the solution. To find the solution i decided to hard reset the new rom with which all my gps problems started, and following the instalation steps of all programs and configurations i found the problem and this was related with the quick gps, before using this program to upgrade my gps location my mobile was runing tomtom and others without freezing, but after upgrade the gps location with the quick gps my mobile started to freeze. So this is the problem, just do this try to hard-reset and install eveything but dont, i repeat dont !!use the quick gps or this will freeze your phone again. Following this step your phone will run the gps navigators without the freeze problem
Then men after this try to do this and let me know (PLEAE) if your problem still remain ok? see u and hope you can solve this problem like me.
I too have just started having GPS problems as listed above!
The problem seems to be Quickgps...as soon as u run the quickgps update(which you may have on autodownload) Tomtom crashes and you have to reboot the phone...
I have reinstalled a different rom since and still have the same problem!
i dont know if there is a cache for this program that can be cleared or something other than reflashing the device
As the days go on and the 7 day update starts running out im guessing more people will start having the same problems!mine happened 28/10/09 evening time!
Same problem: freezing XPERIA when using GPS!
Yesterday I connected my X1 to the PC and got the latest Quick GPS update. Today I'll need to use my gps for a trip... Wanted to prepare the navigator and got the same problem like you guys.
Probably something wrong with the last update since I have not installed anything nor updated the firmware.
Is there any way to get any older version of the quick gps? Before after each 7 days period, it was possible still to use the GPS. Even though it was much slower but in the end it always works before updating... Will a hard reset give me an old version of Quick GPS?
This is so annoying at this moment. Hope somebody find a solution fast.
Hi all,
Got the very same problem yesterday.
I tought the GPS HW had gone. I have uninstalled the Route 66 SW, but there are some files that still lay in the phone.
Then re-install everything from scracth, but problem remains. Now i know i a GPS. Could be worse if was a HW problem in the phone.
Possible solution
Hi
I have maybe same problem with other phone (HTC Rose). If any application try to connect to GPS, phone freezes. After Hard Reset it was OK, but only until I use QuickGPS. Then it again freeze whole mobile after use GPS application.
My temporary solution:
1.
Erase QuickGPS data. Simply delete 2 files: Temp\xtra.bin and Windows\xtra.bin
2.
Soft Reset phone.
Try it, and let me know.
working so far...
Thank you motaba.
I did what you proposed and erased the files. It worked actually.
I have been running my gps now for some minutes and it did not freeze. It found the signal and started to navigate without freezing.
So at first glance it seems to work. I will try it further and tell you all about further information.
but how can the gps work so fast and well without these quickgps files? are they totally redundant?
Greetings
Thanks a lot motaba.
Works for me as well.
As yes, it got the location pretty fast without the "A GPS mambojambo"
I was gettin 8-9 statelites.
P.S: Anyone can tell me were to get TomTom 7 for X1 ? Route 66 is pretty anoying some times....
X1 GPS
After deleting the fails xtra.bin my gps start to work for now, but I want to ask do I have to use quickGPS update if I update the gps from there the problem will be start again
Yes delete xtra.bin helps!!!
Does anyone has older version of quick gps. I still want to use quick gps, becasus waiting for gps to fix is annoying. thanks
Hi all,
After deleting the xtra files and confirm that works i went out, and during the driving i used the GPS.
Even went going out of the car and switching GPS programm off, as soon as i got back into the car and switch programm on, the GPS location came so quick that was unbeleivable. Only time to switch it on , put it into the older start the car and when i look into it, was already navigating.
So my advice is FORGET about Quick GPS.
I think ESA as lunched a new GPS satellite for the European system, I wonder if has anything to do with with it. ??? Anyway it's great !!!
No, ESA satellites are not primary GPS satellites. They provide WAAS/EGNOS correction info only. AFAIK Xperia does not support correction, so it does not work with these satellites at all.
The problem could be with QuickGPS data. Many users started to have the problem at the same time. It seems xperia uses QuickGPS if they are available. So any corruption on QuickGPS side makes GPS unusable.
Sometimes just forced QuickGPS reload helps .. but sometimes not, and that's when the trick with xtra.bin comes handy.
Thank you all in this awesome forum. Deleting the xtra.bin files solved the problem for me. Even the time to log the gps position seems not really to be slower in my case
Hi Dr Sid
Thanks for the explanation.
My point was that the xtra.bin removal works, and after i did that the GPS position was found very very quickly without starting Quick GPS.
I wonder why because, before it would take 10 minutes or more, if quick GPS was not used.
Summer time change?
Hi
I was wondering what is wrong with xtra.bin. It is downloaded from web server xtra1.gpsonextra.net or simmilar.
In my country (Slovakia) at 24-25.10. there was time change from summer time CEST (GMT+2) to CET (GMT+1). Maybe it is some dependance between change of time and GPS problem.
Wiki says same time change is all over Europe.
All of you with same problem, please check registry, what servers are set in QuickGPS. My phone is HTC, so registry are there:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\QuickGPS\0\0]
"port"=dword:00000050
"IP"="xtra1.gpsonextra.net"
THANKYOU SO MUCH!!
This has been driving me crazy!! I have only just learned to put ROM's on my phone and this is when the problems started, so I suspected the ROM's was causing the problem.
Deleted the 2 files and now my GPS works perfectly.
Excellent fix, saved me so much time.
THANKS THANKS THANKS !!!!!!
Works for me too (Buenos Aires - Argentina).

It's very probable that this is the problem, since I have it since a few days also. But it's strange, last time change I had no problems with it.
hehe, a bit slow to find this thread
yep the quickgps data is corrupt somehow.
took me a lot of reboots to find this out.
A-GPS still works just try running google maps with GPS turned OFF!! you get a rough idea of where your are.
QuickGPS gives a weeks calcutions of predicted GPS satalite locations which can then be used to reduce the cold-boot gps startup time.
If you live near the coast at all, your GPS chip will also pickup the land based stations that broadcast static information which helps in the accuacy of location.
It is quite possible to live without QuickGPS, it just makes the startup time anything upto 2 minutes.
However, with quickgps being used for so many phones, it should not be too long before its all fixed again
It's just pity it can't be disabled by some normal means. If you delete the file, QuickGPS will load it back next week.
Also it could try to compare data from the file with data from the satellite. If different satellites are visible than those which should be visible based on the file, than GPS could realize something is wrong. It does not.

GPS... will it ever work?

Question:
Is there any way to adjust GPS settings in TE or in some other settings GUI?
In all my time of Android use on the Kaiser, only once has the GPS ever worked which was with l1q1d's .25 kernel (with module update) and Incubus26jc's build.
Google maps/latitude/navigation/places all worked fine on this build but I currently have it set up with the current Sourceforge build and Scoot's/n2rjt's cache kernel. I DO NOT want to change anything EXCEPT the GPS settings.
From what I've gathered the settings should be 9600baud, N, 8, 1.
Thanx for any help in advance...
Wait... WHAT?
IIRC, you don't have to change anything. GPS works for a long time now...
I don't know if it's the phone, something in the kernel or a module error but I never got a lock on any program that uses GPS, not GPS test, facebook, maps/latitude/navigation, or foursquare.
Like I said, it only worked once way back when we were using the .25 kernel with the update. Since then I've not gotten one GPS lock... not one.
I'm using the new cache kernel and all of the current fixes, updates. My GPS always worked with every release. It's very slow when searching for GPS signal but it's working.
I have tried with iGo but not with Google Maps. But I think it could work with Google Maps.
I have changed the Radio ROM several times so it can't be the problem.
I personally think I might have a bad GPS reciever in this phone because I can't remember it ever working.
Ill try and scavenge another one of these Kaisers from work (they were popular amongst the office workers), HardSPL it and install the build I'm using on it, just to see if it works. Ill report back later...
Sent from my Android on HTC Kaiser using XDA App
Okay, got another Kaiser and tested GPS on it before wiping/unlocking/hardspl-ing it and it worked fine. Found 5 sattelites and locked on within seconds using GPS test under winmo.
Unlock/security unlock/hardspl/kernel install/install android and update/use backup from original phone (2.2.2 with RIL and cache update) and problem followed. GPS test only found 3 sattelites at most and never locked on for the 10-15 minutes I had it up.
IMHO, I have a software comm port issue. wether it needs a different speed or a different setting in android I can't tell. I looked over initrd and can't seem to find any port settings.
I can tell you that the GPS did work with Krazy Killa's kernel, but it was highly unstable compared to the newest one from Scoot/l1q1d/n2rjt.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...
I got a idea... flash winmo and test it
As stated in post #6, the Kaiser was stock when I tested the GPS, meaning winmo 6.0 was running before flashing anything to the phone. GPS tested fine under winmo, aquiring signal and lock in about 10 seconds using GPS Test for winmo (2008 version).
Im just looking for where the actual hard settings would be in either /system or in modules added. I have done some GPS work in the past (omnitech hacking and modding, changing OS, modding settings, etc.), so I have no fear of breaking something if it doesn't work anyway.

Somewhere on the winmo settings, you'll find the GPS port, baud etc.
You can ask in ther kernel threads how this is set...
Thats what I was asking about...
Could the kernel (mtdblock0) be mounted under terminal emulator, be edited and still work, or is this a crapshoot?
I have all the settings for the "correct" GPS port number, Xbit, BPP, basically all of it.
I remeber reading somewhere that Android is looking for 38.4bps. This is not correct as the Kaiser uses 9.6bps, or 9600 bits data rate.
If this is incorrect, data from the satellite(s) will be misinterpeted and give incorrect readings. The satellites don't care what you recieve, it's how the data is handled after the phone gets it.
The way I learned all of this is by cracking a "nk.bin" file open for the Omnitech GPS back in 2008 and creating a custom bootloader that allowed use of one of 3 different GPS programs to run on one unit. Destinator, iGo and TomTom all ran well of this one GPS because I was able to get the GPS settings right.

IIRC, mtdblock0 is the WHOLE nand memory. So you cannot mount it, only mtdblock0p1, mtdblock0p2 etc etc. But yes, you can mount /system for writing with mount -o remount,rw /system

Perhaps liquid or scooter or somebody else will see this and point you in the right directions.

Sorry, forgot "mtdblock0" was NAND, pt1/2/3/4 is the partitions. Will try mounting and see if I can find anything. I've checked /system/libs/*.* ("all" for non-DOS users) and can't find anything pertaining to the GPS. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
/system/lib/libgps.so ???? <-----
Apparently I need to acces the kernel directly in order to change any values within the base GPS driver. I extracted OS (kernel) with NBH tool and gave it a once over.
I'll dig in later as myPITA girlfriend wants to go putz around today...pfft.
