What is the problem, this so called community I've heard about is not much of a community is it.
There's no need for it at all.
Can someone please offer some real advice.
Ok, here is a real advice:
Please read the tutorials.
I have, but the one I am reading shows an old JF1.41 rom, when I looked at the other roms it says things like only for 36b phones ect..... It's confused me a little because tho I am amature techy I am also extra cautious and dont want to brick my phone.
Would I be ok using CyanogenMod [v3.9.7] && Palm Pre theme [1.8] ported for instance
I think the reason people are being a bit hostile is because you posted a question in the development section. That may seem OTT but there are some days when the whole first page of the development section is filled up with questions.
Before you flash a cupcake ROM (cyanogen, JF) you will need the new radio. I'm not entirely sure if you can flash that radio on RC7 or whether you will need to install a custom ROM first (like JF's RC9) so if someone could clear that up that would be useful. It can be found here. Copy that to your SD, name it update.zip and flash. Then you can flash a Cyanogen or any other cupcake ROM. That particular ROM you were talking about sounds like it was ported to the HTC Magic/Sapphire. Only flash ROMs from the dream section.

Hi mate, I wouldnt flash 3.9.7 if you only just rooted your phone, go with the stable v3.6.8.1 first, then use Nandroid recovery to create a backup. Then worse case scenario you can always restore that image if needed.
There's a good reason 3.9.7 is marked as experimental, and there is alot to learn before attempting any Hero roms etc.
If you get stuck with anything feel free to shoot me a PM Im always around and happy to help.
Long time lurker first time poster btw
Thanks guys, I will not post in this section again and sorry to those I have upset, would hve been nice to have been simply told.
Thanks for the help.
lol that was hard as nails

Wow that was by far the hardest groaned I have ever seen in my few months on xda!
People are just tired of everybody posting in devolpment when there is a q and a section, and when there are 20 to 30 new threads that have already been discussed, the devolpers get annoyed. Go with the stable version of cyanogen's rom, flash the new radio image and get yourself the hard spl, not the special, if you see warnings, run very far away. Install the s a lifesaver
ahem...
I wasn't hostile before, attempting to be civil now.
You posted two questions in the development forum. The first was regarding root. There are numerous tutorials available on this forum and even more via a simple google search. I know this because I read them, learned the process inside and out and successfully rooted my phone within the first hour of owning it. So yeah, I made a joke about a hard working mod having to move your thread... no personal attack so whatever.
Your second question was an open ended request for what are basically opinions. There are a number of great custom roms being developed here on XDA and all of them are unique in their own way. Roms like HERO and Cyan's experimental rom are definitely not for newcomers and the threads posted by their developers clearly state the risks involved in attempting to run them. 15 minutes in the dev forum and you could have made an educated decision on your own. One post in Q&A and you would have gotten much friendlier responses but in the end, you'd still have to choose your own adventure.
Let me make one thing clear...
I'm not a dev. I'm an end user who tries to contribute something useful to this forum and learns a whole bunch in the process. I've offered help to many people via PM and replies in threads (as long as the discussion is on-topic) but over time I've come to the realization that simply handing out information instead of forcing you to find it on your own actually does a disservice to not only the forum, but YOU as a user. So hate on us all you want. I think you'll find that following forum rules in the future will make your experience here a happier one, and snarky comments like yours are better left un-submitted.
To answer your question: I started with JF's 1.5 rom and think it was a great way to gain exposure to the world of custom roms and root. A lot has changed since then and things have actually become a lot easier since cyanogen released his recovery image w/ nandroid and tools like switchrom came out. Its now very easy to hop between roms and there are fewer chances you'll screw something up in the process. Personally, I've been sticking with Cyanogen's roms since 3.4.6, and though there have been some bumps in the road I've had very few issues and am currently working with his 3.9 experimental builds.
Hope you get where I'm coming from, good luck to you in the future.
I just got a G1 and I rooted it to RC-29.
I'm very new to any of this hacking stuff and I have no idea what to do next. My guess is that I need to update to RC-33 and/or firmware 1.5? Along with installing the multi touch and things like that...?
I've read up on some information and JesusFrekes or something like that used to have a lot of updates for the rooted G1, unfortunately all the download links on his site don't work so I have no idea where to go from here... Can anyone tell me what I should do?
look in androidandme.com or google rc-33 and g1 rooting and stuff, idk
If you have root now, you can flash the newest cyanogen rom. check out the cyanogen thread in dream development. JF isn't updating roms anymore. Without danger/death/haykuro special spl (search it in these forums), and seeing as how you are new to this I suggest cyanogen ROMS are your best bet Also check out www.cyanogenmod.com and the cyanogenmod wiki.

hi there. i highly suggest that you follow previously posted suggestions. as you can see, this is my very first message to post on this forum and i have been a member for over 2 years. i have had my dream/G1 for almost a year now. in that time span, i have gained root access, flashed a couple of haykuro's builds, flashed jesusfreke's ROM, disappeared for awhile, came back, couldn't find jesusfreke anymore. after doing some research, i discovered the genius cyanogen and flashed his ROM, and then another, and then another, until i am finally currently running the 4.2.2 version. i did all of this without knowing a thing about linux and without any hacking or programming skills. i did all of this simply by reading, researching, reading, googling, reading, reading, and more reading. i promise you, everything that you need to know - guides for noobs with step by step instructions - are here in this forum. once you find these guides, try them them out, step by step. if you hit a snag, or something goes wrong, re-read the instructions to make sure you followed them exactly. if you think you did, search for the error that you stumbled upon. i'm going to go out on a limb and say that i'm 100% positive that someone else has had the same problem and it has already been solved and someone else has probably written a guide for the next noob to read once he/she comes across the same error. but he/she just has to find said guide! once you search and find this guide, follow the instructions, if you do not understand something or simply cannot, i mean simply cannot find an answer or help to solve your problem, then i suggest you resort to asking a question. but, only as a last resort.
but, it has been my personal experience that everything i have needed has been either at this forum or found through google search. these developers have not only made me love my phone once again by developing such sweet ROMs, but they even wrote up some very easy to follow guides for the newbies so even we can enjoy them too!
so: research, read, follow instructions exactly as they say, only ask questions if you seriously cannot find the answer after doing some serious serious research, then proceed to flash your phone. hell...if this math lovin' accountant girl here can do it, i'm sure anyone can! but only after hours and hours and pages and pages of reading and researching.
p.s. the very first sticky in this q&a forum shows you what to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679
I installed a black theme primarily for gettin the battery percentage, but now I got a widget..so i want to revert back to the stock ROM..how do i do that?
also, what tools/knowledge do i need to make my own themes/colour changes?
all tools and all knowledge you need you can find in this forum.
don`t be lazy and search like everyone else here.
well..forget about the tools then..at least tell me how to get a stock theme back??
i did search and all that comes up are other threads about various themes, with about 100 replies each...
forgive me then for thinking that these forums were here to help..clearly you're not the helping type...if you cant be bothered helping, best thing is to not reply and wait for someone else to reply who will be happy to help..
what do you want stock theme or stock rom? you can just flash a rom with the stock theme over top of what you have. nandroid first of course. this is the most obvious/clear solution i can think of. I.E. if you're running cyanogen with a morph or a theme and you want to get back to the stock theme, just reflash the CM rom over top of what you have, all settings will be saved.

if you want mod themes/roms, you are failing at the first mission. you have to learn how to use google or the forum search so you are able to find the info you need. it is normal to read threads with more then 100 postings, in this threads are often a lot of informations. i did it the same way. if you want something, do something for it. why should someone else do the searching for you?
https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AcdxIJRSH9ypZGZzc2pxNDlfMjdnazk4OHNxZA&hl=en
read this. if you don`t understand something, search in forums. if you really find no info after a long search, you can ask in this subforum.
i know where to find themes..i can see about themes on the forum at modaco, i can see the themes here, i can see the special thread with all the morphs..i know how to use google and the search....
i wasnt asking anyone to do the searching for me..on normal forums, you ask a question and someone who knows answers..you dont expect someone to search and tell you the answer..on forums if i see a question i can answer, i answer it..i dont tell that person to go search for it..
anyway..enough about that..thanks for the link
moved to the Q&A forum
I have a few questions...
If i root using this method
forum . xda-developers . com / showthread.php?t=694572 (i had the regular link, but it told me since im new i cant post it)
is there a way that i can install a kernal to get it to 710 mhz? Kinda like the one in Buufed 2.1.2. I had it before and my battery life was great and the phone was really fast and responsive, but i wanted my visual voicemail.
Also, if im able to do that, would i be able to put Apps2SD on my phone even if i wont have a custom rom? Do i even need a custom rom?
Also, ive searched for relevant things, and all that came up was threads where people would reply "DO A SEARCH BEFORE POSTING! RARARA!" and not answer the question in any way shape or form, so please, skip that and help me.
I'm noobie enough as it is.
and also forced roaming...i tried out Cyanogens 2.2 ROM and it had forced roaming on it and that helped a LOT because my phone constantly switches between sprint and verizon in my house which would make it lag and drain battery faster, so my other question is is there some way to get forced roaming on my phone without a custom rom too?
sp basically im looking for if its possible to have Apps2SD, an OC 710 mhz kernal and forced roaming without puting any custom roms on?
Actually, all your questions are answered elsewhere if you would have just done a little bit of reading through the threads, or even just read the titles of some of the threads. Good job on trying the Search feature, just work a little harder at reading through the results next time. Also read the titles of threads. Being a newbie isn't an excuse to be lazy.
Here are your answers that I will kindly link for you below:
No, you can't have A2SD on regular 2.1 stock. The A2SD support code is something that has to be built into the boot image of a ROM. So yes, you will need to use a custom ROM that has A2SD support. That answer is in post #3 of the A2SD thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715116
You can't overclock the stock 2.1 because the OC kernels are packaged with specific ramdisks for each custom ROM. So in order to overclock, you will have to use both a custom ROM and the one of specific OC kernels for that particular ROM. That answer was found in post #1 of the OC kernel thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705074
There is a method for Force Roam, but I don't think anyone has got it working on the Sprint CDMA Hero yet. Cyanogenmod does have a patch for it. Here are just a couple short threads detailing this, both of which I was easily able to find by searching "force roam":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739208
http://forum.xda-developers.com//showpost.php?p=5405666&postcount=18
http://forum.xda-developers.com//showthread.php?t=572041
In short -- no, you can't do anything you're asking about without a custom ROM.
Also, in addition to reading more before posting next time, please also note where the appropriate place to post is. Since this was a question, it should have gone in the "Q&A" forum. Thanks, welcome, and good luck.
Also, please considering reading the rules and posting in the correct sub-forum.

Very helpful in term of rooting and flashing
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2337733
Feel free to head over to the development section and do some reading, but for what you are asking YOU DO NOT NEED TO POST.
There's a lot to learn in here, and a lot of very helpful people, but I PROMISE you that ALL of your questions have been answered before.
Those in here who aren't part of active development are all people who went from zero knowledge/understanding of android to merrily flashing every rom under the sun, rooting and re-rooting their devices into hard-brick heaven.
Read. Read more.
Stop complaining, and read more. If you have questions, use the search function. Do it again, but phrase your search string differently.
If none of this works, ask your question politely and concisely, and don't post to the dev section unless you have something useful to contribute.
P.S. If you're not a native english speaker, I apologise from the bottom of my heart, I didn't mean to offend.
If you are a native english speaker, learn how to write/speak like a human being instead of the stream of consciousness of a whiney twelve year old who's had his x-box taken away.
I concur!

I think that you should go through the threads which are meant for newcomers who want to play with their phone and roms so that you know how to recover your phone if something goes wrong because doing things without proper knowledge can change your phone into a beautiful paper weight.Go through the following thread which can give a clear idea about flashing official ICS for Germany but I strongly advice to think and proceed or probably wait for your country's turn to get official ICS...
Anyways here is the link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=1840
Unfortunately if you are sick of your note, i am not sure that just putting a new ROM on there is going to change your mind
You should sell it whilst its still worth something.
