Update to Gingerbread, and Lose root?? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have the latest rom.. Cm6 rc3.. I got this by using the one click Root method.. the app that you had to have, i don't have anymore due to wiping my phone..
I reinstalled the app and pressed unroot to see if I still could... I couldn't..
I then pressed root and it said that im already rooted..
By wiping my phone and losing that app, am i now stuck on root?..
I read somewhere around these forums that once gingerbread comes out for the nexus one, the people that have rooted their phone with the one click method will lose root once they update to 3.0.. Like everything will be back to normal, stock everything.. it'll be like you have never rooted in the first place..
Is that true?
P. S. I do love being rooted tho lol.

most update will make you stock again, just like when update to froyo
but then some genius here will figure it out and BAM we're rooted again, so no worries man

ANY OTA update loses root. Just wait til gingerbread comes out and let Cyanogen or Paul gets root working on it before you flash it. Most likely it will erase all data and you gotta redownload and resync everything.

Creating the rooted rom is pretty easy. The problem is usually for devices that have updated to some manufacturer update that locked the device down more.
Stock updates reverts back to stock as many have already said.

[Q] Has anybody had a successful JH7 update thats rooted?

Tried to update fine it completed then rebooted then said "Did not install" but it says I'm using JH7 now. But in no way is the GPS any better...
Exactly the same experience here. I will add that I also did not get the new office application, have not checked for the updated YouTube.
Yes, I had no troubles getting the update. See the following:

Hey guys, I see some of you are bricking or not being able to update.
You can use this to flash to I897UCJH7 OTA.
Use Clockwork recovery to flash it...
Cognition is currently being rebuilt on top of this, deodexed and all that fun stuff.
This flashes the system folder, kernel, and modem.

These have been was posted for awhile now. Use clockwork recovery to flash either of them.
Yes, I was rooted, but I had just done a factory restore, it returned it to factory state, although I still had the superuser app in the app drawer. I then immediately downloaded the OTA update and it installed fine. I had the new youtube and all. So I then downloaded ROM Manager and tried to do a restore so I could get all my apps back, but that F**ked it all up! I have since had to do a odin one click restore and now I cant get the update to go past 50%, so i'm SOL now.
I'm rooted using the stock ROM and did the update yesterday and it installed 100% with no problems. It did hang at 50% for around 30 seconds or more maybe.
Im rooted with all att bloatware removed. It failed at 50%, rebooted and said the update failed. However gps absolutely works now, so apparently whatever it did managed to fix at least the gps. It said jh7 in system info. Battery life still seems to suck though. I cant wait for froyo to screw everything up 1000 times worse than this.

I was rooted with the bloatware removed and with sideloaded i found a new Update.zip that removed the root and the update will download but just says "Preparing". Then says "Update is failed" and reboots says it did not complete.
Im rooted. While I didnt get the extra office app or whatnot my GPS is working at least 50 times better. I am locked onto 8 satellites within 5-8 seconds indoors. (using gps test) Going outside only makes my reception better.
When I initially purchased my captivate it was shakey at best. My OTA update said it failed but im showing JH7 and my GPS is now working well.
like everyone else. I'm rooted with stock rom and the update did not succeed. I'm hoping that when 2.2 is released, it replaces everything regardless of being rooted or not, so that I can start from a clean slate.
i tried to return to stock via odin one-click but that did not allow the update to run.
Rooted, unlocked, and successful update. Via EDGE, no less.
did anyone get it to succeed that left the bloatware removed during the update process?
Just updated got to 100 and failed. It shows JH7 even though I got a notification saying update failed. Now youtube widget is dead and software update doesnt even open anymore.
Update media scanner was running for 20 min thats why nthg was opening. If we flash the update on the web. Would that whipe everythg.

Success for me. Just did the basic root. Still have bloat and no lag fix. Something to consider, I did a reset the day before that took off side loading.
Took about a min on 3g to download, hung at 50 and 92 for about 10 seconds.

Yeah, still rooted. There's a survey going on to find out what's going on in another thread. All the posts I've seen with un rooted phones is people canceling the process.

Visit the market place search for quick office. See if there is a special version there called Quick office for captivate. There was for me. FYI mine said it failed but the gps is now scary fast, it was always good for me. About 30 seconds. But I just got a no error lock inside my apartment build in 3 seconds.
i was rooted and still am. took oclf off and update succesfull. gonna put oclf back on. is there any dangers of reinstalling oclf again? this would be the 3rd time.
Mine was rooted and lag fixed.

Same situation here.
I don't think people should be getting their hopes up for a 2.2 update anytime soon though. Something just tells me it might be a while if it ever even happens, but that just my speculation.

[Q] Do I need to unroot for any stock updates?

So, when I got my first Captivate, I got into my epic Android zone with all the ROMs and all that good stuff and managed to mess all that up royally. Well I got my new one and made myself keep it at stock 2.2, but rooted (in case any cool apps came about needing root and CWM wouldn't flash correctly, got a bunch of E: errors so I am assuming that I don't have CWM installed anywhere). So, with this in mind, whenever (or should I say if they ever) they push the OTA update for gingerbread or allow non market apps (preferably both) do I need to be unrooted (meaning will they shut off my device once root is detected on from the OTA or will it just not be pushed because I'm rooted) or will it just push over my current ROM, possible recovery?, etc.?
EDIT: So, does the unroot function of superoneclick work or no?
Anyone care to touch this?
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for another stock update, just my two cents.
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
When I had my rooted D1 I tried the OTA to see what would happen. I received in error saying that it did not work. I don't think it will work with a rooted phone????

If you are rooted the OTA will fail, but then OTA from Att always fails. OTA updates are not safe to begin with but that is just my 2 cents

To be honest I am not sure. As I only run stock long enough to,find the info to get a custom rom. If I remember right it wipes the device kinda like Odin when flashing so you may be ok.
The first update that came out for captivate, I was rooted and it worked. Worked for many others. Then the update to 2.2 came out and those who were stock rooted lost root. Its just best to be stock with update. Those that had failed updates, the majority used dg's odin package to go back to stock. That's what I remember in the "let's figure this out" thread.

[Q] Can't unroot

I used Super One Click to root my phone a few months ago, only to remove most of the bloatware that came on the phone. My phone now keeps trying to update to the new software, usually only once every 24 hours, but the past week, a few days it has automatically tried updating several times throughout the day. Very frustrating.
Obviously it won't update being rooted. However, I removed the bloatware, so I don't care that it is rooted anymore. I figure I can unroot it and then get the update to work. However, using Super One Click again, it won't unroot. It gets the error "Device does not have Superuser!" I can then proceed to root it with SOC and have it be successful, and try again and get the same error. Any ideas?
And I guess, will unrooting allow me to successfully update it anyways? Thanks!
The phone should update if it is rooted. It will not update if you have CWM installed. You will also get all that lovely bloatware installed back during the update.
Your best bet is to get the lgpnst and v8 tot and update manually then root that and remove the bloatware again.
Thanks for the help. I'm very new to this, so I don't really know what you're talking about haha. I see some stuff on tot, but what is the lgpnst? If you could link to that and the v8 tot you are talking about and maybe how to use those, that would be great.

Verizon update rolling out now: Build VS98012B

And no, it's not kit kit. I'll wait for the brave souls to experiment...

Nothing about this update has me even thinking about switching back to stock for this. But thanks for the heads up.
Anyone have a copy of the stock recovery? Don't want to flash all the way back to stock but would like to take the update. Currently running tarp.

I know this breaks root, but is it possible to root again or do we have to find a new way to root. I only want to root for tethering and debloat. Verizon sucks when they load everything they can on top of a phone that has a lot of apps already installed on it.
Best to get a copy of it to the devs. If it works like the razr, you can d/l but not install it and pull the file from cache.

Use Titanium backup, and freeze Software Update MUC.
This should prevent you from getting the update.

especially not, since you can get the benefits of the new radios, without accepting the whole update.
Will this for sure break root and would something like root keeper help at all?
I'm finally eligible for a contract upgrade device. If I were to buy a G2 today from Verizon, what are the odds it come with this update out of the box? I'd hate to buy a device I can't root and install custom ROMs on...

I would say zero. I would imagine their stock is at least 1-2 months old. I have never bought a phone that didn't get an update the first day.

That was my feeling as well. I thought I would wait until the S5 or HTC One 2 came out to upgrade, but based on the previous versions rooting/unlocked bootloader on VZW are highly unlikely.

Borrow a friend's pc or go to a library and use Samsung Kies, but you will lose root.
This is most likely because you deleted some the system apps that came with the stock rom..... This is why I never delete them only freeze with titanium backup! This happen to me on Ml9 so I had to restore stock rom reroot put super su in survival mode and then take the update!

Kies is just going to tell you that your firmware is up to date. Either factory reset or you may have to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715 < This is how I had to do it.
So if I am rooted and deleted the AT&T bloat apps, I can't install the KitKit update? What I unroot completely? I know that won't bring back the garbage AT&T apps back, but would I be able to OTA to kitkat then?

Wow. Anyway, I was rooted, but had Wanam installed and successfully updated to Nb4. I had the fake system status set to official. I was alwasy under the impression if it said Official you could update.
And great, because now we all have to follow a really complicated guide to restore back to MJ5 if we want kitkat.
I was rooted on mj5 no wanam or anything and my phone update to nb4
It didn't even ask.
What you probably did was delete the att update software so now it's not even looking.

I don't think being rooted affects your updating. I have read many people accidentally updating and loosing their root. If you couldn't update with root, people wouldn't freeze at&t update.
ive tried unrooting factory reset andthe only thing i can think of is that ive deleted something . i guess the lesson learned is juat freeze apps instead of deleting them
