anyone have tips for making it work on the captivate?
the current version requires a reboot, but i found that using quick reboot works too
right now im just hitting the apndroid widget and then quick reboot, does anyone know a way to make a script to tie the two together?
Get the APNdroid 2.5 beta (root required). Last I read it does work on the captivate.
Hey, what's an APNdroid?

You don't need APNdroid to turn your data off in other countries. All you have to do is Uncheck the "data roaming" box in mobile network settings.
i see. well then, that probably helped too
yay! more space on the pages to put other crap i don't need yay!
thanks

Hi Peeps,
i use the internet quite frequently on my diamond... but i'm always worried about the data connection still being on after i finished surfing...

thanks
????
If you can afford it get a unlimited data plan....or put on schap's advanced config tool and you can set up a timer....pm me if you more help.
Peace
Mike
I believe the data connection can be on 24/7 and its OK. As long as its not 'active' i.e. not transferring data to or from the device.
The whole idea of GPRS, 3G, HSDPA is that they are always on... but not charging unless being used.
When active you have the animated double arrows showing data transfer... check the manual for the task bar icons to see. This is the same with all connection types (except bluetooth).

Correct.
It gets a bit tricky with newer devices, however, if you don't have an unlimited plan because there's almost always something running in the background (weather updates, email polling, GPS download etc) unless you make an effort to stop each of them from initiating a connection. The best way to enjoy what a device like the Diamond has to offer is with an unlimited data package.
Which unlimited plan do you use in Egypt, mkhattab?
it take more battery life like this if it stell on guys !
rafter_01:
if you want to stop it completely jast prass the E or H icons on the upper bar and then press disconnect
it will stop the connection completely

Not always. There are quite a few ****ty networks in europe and other places that still use the old 'per minute' charging model on GPRS networks as well.
For people stuck with these bastards, it is worth having a timer somewhere to automatically kill the connection. but mkhattab is right. When i had the diamond from work, even with the timer set, it never disconnected even with push mail turned off, so it seems that they send out some sort of keep alive maybe?
Use Skschema to setup a script (they have examples you can copy/use as a tutorial - quite easy) to run an auto shutdown of 3G/GPRS every x minutes of the day, every xth day of the week/month etc.
link http://s-k-tools.com/?skschema/m_skschema.html.
I've tested it with Activesync and it appeared to work very well for the week's trial, I had.

MaroO-> I actually live in Dubai (from Egypt though)
You could try modaco NoData:
Hope It's ok to post this here, I know it is often included in roms. I have not used it at all on my Diamond, but it worked well for me in the past.

Hey all am about to go off roaming with T-Mobile. I know it says the data plan only works in the UK but I'm sure they'll be happy to hit me with the bill if this is not the case.
Is there a way I can 100% stop any data comms from happening?

I just make a dummy data profile with no acess point names or anything and just switch between that and my real one depending on weather i want my diamond to connect to the internet or not lol
No Data doesn't seem to work for me (unless I'm missing something)
I'll try the Dummy connection
Tried blank connection too, no joy unless I need a restart?
Sorry, must've been being dumb before. I installed Advance Comm manager so I could turn off 3G and now it seems to work but I'm not sure if I needed the latter
Cheers anyway
NoData works like a charm for me..
Just install it, run it, and toggle the three different data types.

Yea if there are wifi routers there..
Just be sure to turn on the "limey" setting.
make sure you use apndroid to disable data (this may take out your sms/mms though)
you may get hit with roaming. i dont know if the updates fully resolved accidental data use
im off on holiday to Vegas on wendesday with me Nexus 1, what do i need to turn off to make sure im not hit with some massive bill when i get back to the UK?
I've read stories about people being charged sh*t loads cause they left things running in the background of there phone for example then they get hit with a massive internet usage bill.
should i turn wifi off, GPS, auto sync, widgets, etc
Wifi works independent of cellular signal so you do not need to worry about that at all. GPS and Auto-Sync rely on internet access, whether wifi or cellular. Widgets will not be a bother unless they access internet, in which case you want then not to be using cellular access.
Aside from roaming phone calls, the reason people get massive bills is wireless cellular internet. So turn off cellular internet access, and use wifi whenever you need the internet.
just turn off data roaming and you're golden.
i would turn the phone completely off! when i went to germany last year i didnt dare turn on my g1, i was told i would have roaming charges even if i didnt use the phone, and it was on, in standby mode. better safe than sorry...imho
enjoy your holiday btw
Backup your APN settings and then delete them.
That way, you won't need to worry about internet charges

This worked for me in US and Spain earlier this year (UK resident on O2). Unless you've changed the default you'll probably find it's already switched off.

dont delete the apn settings, just edit them and add an XXX at the end of them. this will render them non-functional, and you can just remove the XXX when you get back home and your data will work again.

Thirded. If you're paranoid, you can turn off cellular data altogether. Erasing your APN's would work too, but that's overkill.
Err... don't bugger around with apns.
Turn off data roaming.
If you're paranoid, call your carrier and tell them to disable data roaming for you. Advise them that you're travelling and want no surprise data charges. Then they can't bill you.
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if when I connect to the internet using a WIFI connection (whether its one I own or a public one)...does that count as "data usage" on my bill?
The reason I ask is because I'm on tmobile and a most of you probably already know, they lowered the cap to 5gbs of data a month and after you go past that limit you'll still have data connection but it'll be super slow (most likely EDGE speeds) until your new billing cycle begins. I'm currently at 4.8gbs already (watching youtube videos, using the internet, xda, etc) so I want to know if I can use an open WIFI connection without worrying about going past 5gbs.
Thanks.
no it wont count as data usage.

make sure you go to Wifi advance settings and select "Wifi sleep policy" accordingly (I suggest to put it on "Never")
If you don't do so, Android will turn off Wifi and switch to mobile data when your screen is off or not plugged in.

Thank you, I'll make sure I do that then.
note that the wifi sleep policy will only work if you are running FRG83 (2.2.1) unless you are VERY lucky to not experience the bug on 2.2
edit: nvm just saw you're running CM 6.1 ^^
mobile data
also if you really want to not use any of your mobile data you can go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile network settings and turn off data, then you will only use data over wifi and won't use any more data
