[Q] How do I start Galaxy S in safe mode? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
my Galaxy S GT-i9000 got into force close loop and I am now stuck after Android boot. Before performing a hard reset (and spending a week setting up the phone and apps again) I would like to try with safe mode: unfortunately I was so far unable to find how to get into safe mode on it.
Anybody could help? Thank you.
BB

I don't remember there being a Safe Mode. Although you can go to Download Mode and flash a new firmware. It should fix the problem you're having.

There is a safe mode. I've unintentionally ended up in it a few times. I have no clue how to get there willingly though.
Edit: That was easy... Just power on the phone while holding the menu button, just as on a bunch of other android phones.

Thanks for the suggestion. With menu button you mean the left-most one, right? I tried this already and seemed to have no effect. I will try again a few times.

Thank you. I already checked I can get to the recovery mode menu, but I understand this would reset everything on the phone, including personal settings and third party apps. I am looking for a way to avoid this, if at all possible: all I need to do is uninstall a looping application.

Ok I found it. For some reason on my Galaxy safe mode is entered by pressing
Menu+Home+Power On
Thank you everybody for your help, the phone is in good shape again now.

Perhaps they've changed it in newer firmware. I hope so, it annoys me when I end up there unintentionally.

can you post your model number according to the sticker in the battery compartment?
it's weird that it uses Menu + Home + Power

can some one try these buttons and see if it works?
i read on another topic and some people were able to get in
but i still can't get it to go into Safe Mode

I tried and no luck
i have a 3 button disabled phone

Seems random to me... Sometimes I get safe mode by doing a jig and perform some weird wicca rituals.

Today i restartet my SGS and on the reboot i swyped the Display over my T-Shirt to clean the screen. Even before the Pin-Input showed up, in the left bottom corner i had "safe mode" written. As my intention was not to go into this mode i restartet again.
After this, my widgets didn´t work anymore, so i had to take them of the screen and put them again. And all my well sortet apps in the menu are now unsorted.
But no big deal.

Finally i found out how to go into the Safe-Mode every time you need.
As soon as you start your SGS you have to press for a half a second constantly the left Softkey, meaning don´t have it pressed all the time, but touching it every half a second. When coming to the Pin-Input you cann stop it and you will see on the left bottom corner Safe-Mode!
Very usefull if a third-party Launcher or Widget makes some trouble.

i tried it, it didn't work
Which firmware are you on?

Really? tried it 3 times now and every time i was able to get in. I´m on 2.1 I9000XXJF5
You have to touch the button as soon as the screen shows the Samsung Logo, even when the Softkey only will light up 2-3 seconds after the Power on!
I´ve taken a photo. As my Phone is in german it shows not Safe mode but sichere Modus. But it is the same.

it might be another key for the JH2 ROM
i'll see if i can figure it out, but so far the few methods we've figured out doesn't work on the JH2

Ok thanks for testing. Maybe its like the Recovery mode that doesn´t work on some devices without patching.

i'm hoping that is not the case, but it might be true

bricked captivate

need alt ways to get into recovery other than adb and holding down the volume keys.
i bricked my captivate using the odin one click recovery going from the i900 rom to stock. odin had froze and i restarted trying again only to see the phone and computer screen.
sorry a bit frustrated ....ask all the questions u need

1) Remove the battery
2) Remove the SIM
3) Reinsert the battery
4) Run ODIN (Note: I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 so I ran ODIN in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' option. I would suggest doing this to make sure you have no permissions issues with the program.)
5) Depress both the up and down volume buttons on the phone at the same time
6) While you are depressing both the up and down volume buttons, plug in the USB cable.
No need to depress the power button or do anything else. The phone should go right into Download mode with the little yellow construction guy.
Then ODIN will see the COM port you are connecting with and you can just click Start.

I'm not so sure that it's not brickable, I'm pretty sure I bricked mine...
I was trying to load the international galaxy s 2.2 rom using odin 3 and for some reason I got stuck in recovery mode and could do nothing (this was after it finished loading the rom). I couldn't make it go to the download mode. Anything I did just took me right back to recovery.
I'd really love to know what you guys would have done, I'm new to android the captivate is my first.
Thanks in advance for your input.
By the way, I was talking it through with a buddy and we came up with a possible cause. I was rooted when I tried loading the 2.2 rom. Would that have bricked it?

Yes, the buttons are different if you attempted to flash a Galaxy S rom, the typical button hold will not work.

Hey guys, if you are stuck on that phone+!+computer screen, do this to get into download mode!!
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3(you must open odin3 before you start or it won't flash. Do NOT put your sim or sd card back in).
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black and return to that horrible screen.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the voldown and volup.
note: THE STUPID SCREEN IS NOW FIXED!!

that is EXACTLY what got my phone out of the certain brick situation i thought i was in this morning. i had been trying for hours, every combination imagineable from the vibrant/galaxy s forums. odin3 had shut down on me twice mid process so everything was SEVERELY screwed. i did that combination and the very first time it caught and installed now my phone works perfect. ended up sending designgears a donation based on that post alone. thanks dude!

I did have my phone plugged into power when I was trying the button push combos.
I didn't, however, try holding down just the volume button so I can't know for sure if that could have worked.
Since I was within the 30 day window I just took it back to at&t and they gave me a new one. I'm too chicken to try loading the 2.2 rom again. I really want to, but I can't afford a $500 brick...

AT&T replaced it without question? Interesting...
Edit: Well, now that I think about it, the guy that sold me mine was pretty clueless about it. I had to show him how to remove the battery cover, despite the printed "ILLUSTRATED" instructions stuck to the cover.

So I can't get any button combo to work, and all I get is White AT&T screen (if unplugged) and a frozen loading screen(if plugged into usb). Any ideas?
I think I have the same problem.
Used Odin one click to flash stock rom and then tried to flash JH7, but had some troubles with odin when trying flashing... tried to reboot the phone by pulling out the battery and now I can't turn it on, just have an image on the screen: Phone has troubles with connecting to PC and that's it...
oh yeah, that helped me:
1. Remove battery & usb
2. Open odin.
3. Plug in usb.
4. Hold vol down.
5. Put battery in.

ok so i was running a devil kernel on jellybean 4.2 and for some strange reason the rom started acting funny and gave me a message saying i had to type in a password ti decrpyt storage even though i have no passwords on my samsung I897. So i decided to flash back to stock and start all over again from scratch using odin one click but in the middle of downloading my phone was disconnected and it gave me the bricked screen shortly after. Now i am unable to do anything on this phone ive tried pushing the volume buttons and taking the battery and sim card out while running odin 3 again trying to force it back into download but so far no progress has been made. If any one can help me it is much apprecitated.

[Q] Pattern lock -> Too many tries

I was playing around with the pattern lock and eventually got the 'Too many pattern attempts!' message, with it asking for my Google username and password to log in.
No matter what, it doesn't accept my username/password. I am 100% sure I've typed it in correctly.
This bug has been around for over a year with many people reporting 'bricked' phones without even doing anything particularly naughty with their phones.
This is the Google bug that has been posted on it: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006#makechanges
As you can see this has been around for over a year. The 'null'-in-password trick doesn't work, nor does the spamming-home-button trick.
My phone is rooted and with the Voodoo Lagfix-only custom kernel. Any suggestions?
Do a hard reset / wipe. That's my suggestion.
Try booting into recovery (Home Button, Vol Up + Power), and resetting your cache and wiping it. Then try logging in with your Google account. If all else fails, try changing your Google password on the PC then logging in on the phone. And then if it still fails, looks like you need to flash the phone again. Next time, don't enter the thing wrong! Stop rushing haha .
I wasn't rushing, I was playing with the lock. It takes about 30 times before it's permanently requiring the username/password. But really...you can't blame me for not expecting this. :/
I'm currently trying to flash a new ROM but I've run into another problem - I can't get it to boot into downloader/recovery. It's not the lack of the 3 button combo - I've managed to reach Recovery and Downloader ONCE each in the past, but never again since.
And now with all my efforts to boot into recovery/downloader, it now cannot boot into normal usability mode (or in my case, locked mode). Instead, the Galaxy S logo loops endlessly.
Sigh.
Have you read the thread for the fix for Galaxy S variants that are lacking the 3 Button Combos? It's in Android Development. Maybe try that? Or, can you still connect the phone and connect with Kies?
I can't turn on the phone anymore, meaning no changing to USB debugging etc. And I'm having problem accessing recovery/download, even though I definitely HAVE done each of them once before and therefore do not have the 3 button problem.
Without turning on my phone, Kies can't detect it
So what happens when you power on?
Now, it shows the first Galaxy S splash screen, then shows the boot logo, then nothing. The boot logo continues to glow endlessly.
Be patient, i waited up to five minutes. If you see the s logo glowing/shining youare ok

Yeah it's continuously shining. Haven't left it for up to five minutes though... And even then it probably won't help since I'm still locked out of the phone, and unable to access download/recovery mode to reflash it.
After waiting for a long time, the logo disappears, screen goes black. Menu and back buttons light up. Nothing else.
Looks like your going to have to reflash your phone again. Download the desired firmware, open up Odin and put your phone into download mode and start the flashing procedure. Be more careful next time.

Ok i did the same thing, and spent hours googling.
Tried the key combinations to restore, but never worked.
Heres what worked for me, but, be warned all your contacts will be lost if stored on the phone.
From another phone, call your locked number.
Answer it on the locked phone, then hit the "back" button.
This gives you full access to the phones menus etc.
Hang up on the phone you called from.
Now, go into Applications / Settings / Privacy / Factory Data Reset.
This worked for me whereas all other methods did not.
Once your phone is up and running again, be sure to create your google account on your phone.
That way your protected again. If you didnt previously have the account set up from your phone, like i didnt, then you cannot log in of course.
This works...give it a try. Hope it helps.

dear friend dont worry or panic... i'll tell you a trick , go to the samsung customer care and tell them that your phone gets heated up very often and today it just refuses to boot up normally...
since your device cannot get into recovery mode or download mode the company will never know that you had played with the system files in the device or not... (rooted )..
since the samsung people will also try to get your device in recovery mode.. but when it will not go to the recovery mode you will get a mother board replacement under warranty.....
this heating up of the device is a common problem in the galaxy here in india.. so use this excuse and i know it works 100% ... (just dont tell them that you had rooted and lagfixed your device )
What you describe sounds like a very large security hole if I am reading it correctly.
Are you saying that even if your phone has been locked out from too many lock screen failures, that just answering an incoming phone call gives you full access to the phone? Really?
I just checked on my phone and while I can answer an incoming call while the screen is locked, if I hit the back button or menu button, I just get the lock screen.
I'm missing something here...

Put battery out and in ???

Hello Folks,
i've read more times "put battery out and in" for example: to go from downloadmode directly into recovery mode without reset, or just to leave the download mode without flashing.
It is a bad solution, the backcover clips won't get better this way.
You can force a reboot by holding the powerbutton long enough (may 5-10 seconds, i don't check how long exactly).
Same way for the 3-button procedure (vol-up, home and power or vol-down, home and power).
For example if you are in download mode and decide to reboot without flash, keep holding powerbutton and the device will reboot.
Or
If you are in download mode an need to get directly in recovery mode just press the combo (vol-up, home and power) till it reboots and you will go to the recovery.
No need to stress the backcover any more. except for changing sim-,sd-card or akku.
I have a GT-I9000, bootloader and sbl from JVK, but shure it works with other bootloaders/sbl too if they accept the 3-button combo, else it may work for reboot only.
I apologize for my english, hope its not too bad (for a german )
Have a nice day!
edit: works too if phone is freeze

does this matter for normal use?
I've always do this because I'm using Case Mate protection case.
Since my Case Mate is using dual layer protection, opening battery case every time can be so painful...
This method is very useful...
Thanks for sharing anyway...
I tried telling people the same, but they insist in that stupid solution, stupid because it is extra work and not healthy for the phone...
You only really need pull the battery when something has gone wrong otherwise the power button is the posted way .
But i do prefer case off when flashing so i can drop the battery out if i need to or want to quickly .As i have had to take the sim card out and external memory card its case off anyway .

I never had that screen but I ran into an issue before (using motherboard USB port, correct drivers, etc) where I was in download mode but my computer did no recognize my phone. I had a jig and ended up pulling the battery, reinserting battery, and putting back in download mode and that worked.
would you guys happen to know how to determine if its an driver issue or the phone's problem?

You can eliminate drivers as an issue by trying a Linux machine. Wubi installer is the easiest way to try it.
I've been at that screen many times. I would bet drivers have nothing to do with it at this point. The phone---!---PC screen is what I've always called a soft brick, not download mode. If you didn't have 3 button recover/download mode working before you used Odin, then the only thing I can think of is to make yourself the 301kohm jig. That should kick it straight into download mode. There's many links for this in here.
From there, I'm pretty sure there's something you can flash to give yourself button recover/download again, but since I have a first rev phone I've never had to do this.

This is a soft brick. Now some phones may be able to be flashed while in this mode, but mine can't. Mine is a rev 1007, meaning 3 button always worked and is damn near unbrickable. I've been on that screen many times and never been able to make Odin connect. But, I have been able to pull the battery, plug in USB, hold both Vol, and put battery in and boom, back in DL mode.

I've been on that screen many times and never been able to make Odin connect. But, I have been able to pull the battery, plug in USB, hold both Vol, and put battery in and boom, back in DL mode.

The phone-!-computer that can be used as dl mode is the one that says "Firmware Upgrade Failure". I've flashed from that screen before (new one, not old one). Unless you have the i897 gb bootloaders, you probably won't see the new panic screen. A jig will fix you up if have the old panic screen.

That makes sense. I haven't seen that screen while using GB boot loaders, only the older version.

bobbylx, I have had all types of bricks this phone can have. I have a build 1012 and still didn't have the button combo problem. I promise you I know more about any subject on this phone than you. The
Phone----/!\-----PC screen
Is the firmware putting you into DL mode because it isn't going to boot up.
The android man digging is a hardware combination into DL mode.
I have had all screens this phone can have, I also have the unbrickable mod, so while your phone is brickable, mine isn't.

Well, let me rephrase my statement for you since you were obviously upset by what I said.
I've had this phone since release week. In that time, I have seen the phone---!---PC screen many times while flashing. My phone will not flash while on the phone---!---PC screen. Odin does not see it, nothing works. Many other users experience this as well.
I happened to mention that I have never had a 3 button issue no matter what I flash. So when I have been at the phone---!---PC screen, I do the battery pull, usb thing, and kick it into normal "shovel man" download mode, ie, the only one I can flash my phone with.
Now, phone---!---PC may act and work like download mode for you but doesn't for me. So I offered advice based on my personal experience.
While you may know more about the phone than I do, making statements like that do nothing to help your popularity around here.
Also, pretty sure my phone is unbrickable without the mod, at least I haven't and won't brick it by doing whatever I do. If I was a Dev, may be a different story. I can tell you I have flashed almost every ROM in the last year and a half and never had a problem I couldn't resolve.

No worries. And again, I'm no Dev so anything I say is just from what I've experienced. I'm sure there's quite a lot I don't know.
Anyway, to the OP, keep this thread updated on your progress.
And to go back to what I was saying, if you can't flash while in phone--!--pc mode and you can't get into shovel download mode, do the 301kohm resistor jig trick.

Note 5 Broke itself for no reason, won't boot to Android OS

Just looking for opinions. I have a stock note 5, no jail breaking or weird loads. Just a run of the mill Note with way too many candy crush saga apps. We weren't even using it a couple days ago when it turned itself off. Reboot just got it stuck in an endless boot cycle. Loading normal or safe mode gets you the android 'no command' blue screen of death.
I figured maybe bad update...possibly load new firmware. Samsung's smart link application doesn't work, as apparently I don't have a S/N, it doesn't exist and you need that for smart link. (It's not the IMEI.) Anyway, Samsung over the phone told me to try a best buy samsung rep, they'd flash it for free. I thought that sounds safe. But they couldn't get it to recognize my phone....Verizon won't help me, I'm past the year warranty. But still owe too much money to pay it off and get a new one through them...That leaves flashing it myself with Odin. So I did. It went ok, it said it PASSED, the phone rebooted....It started a little config in what looks to be a factory reset type screen...it got to 'erasing', refresh arrow spinning to show me it was going, then it just stops. The world stops and no amount of letting it sit every gets it to go again. Rebooting still has 'no command' and no signs of life.
Any thoughts on what might be going on? Anything else to load or try? The phone's no good to me ****ed, so I'm open to suggestions. Likewise, does it sound like any hardware related things? Is there any hope? would love to hear a first impression from someone more experienced with phones and Android.
Try flashing the latest stock firmware in Odin using "Nand erase all" ticked under options..
Let us know how it goes..

Same Problem it looks like. Odin does it's thing for about 3 minutes. Says 'PASS'. Phone restarts, does some initializing bar moving stuff for 10 seconeds, it switches to 'Erasing' then the phone just stops
That's unfortunate dude.
I'm really sick of Samsung phones. They're just terrible. As someone who's had to replace their screen twice and battery three times, it shouldn't be difficult to replace the motherboard.
This happened to my NOTE 5 (SM-N920V) as well
YOUR NOT ALONE! THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY NOTE 5
I was fishing, this morning at about 7am when my phone rebooted all on its own to the same Samsung Boot Logo screen then stuck as well. NO RYHME NO REASON, I have never, ever cracked, hacked or smacked this phone either,:highfive:
"The only updating that has been done has come via Verizon/Samsung..." But none recently ...that I recall as in, the last week or so.
While I will admit doing "it" (hacking, cracking, modding,) to other android phones (Obviously or I wouldn't have a membership here). But this Note 5? No... Maybe perhaps that's why its broken now? LOL...
It does always seem that my continued membership here is not in vain though, ......
For now, I will do whatever it takes to get it back... .......next to buying a new phone or it not coming back on ever.
I will share here what I did to resolve the issue. And I will without a doubt utilize "EVERY" resources here at XDA-DEVELOPERS to do it, and happily without the help of Verizon or Samsung.
So far I have determined that my Note 5 version is not commonly referenced here which is: the SM-N920V (Verizon U.S)
Thank you XDA-Developers this is why we need informational communities like this in our lives! :victory:
Even though I may still go nutz during this repair... if it happens.... Wish us luck!

might be bad emmc look into booting from sd card not possible on all devices but may be a start,I had a note 4 do the same thing and most def was bad emmc
Unfortunately, my sd card is internal on the Note5 the unique thing is the Note5 does not have an pop of back plate that covers the battery as, like previous versions which allow the back cover to be removed easily, I mean yeah I can take this thing apart, but its not conventional.

Is there any good way guides on how to find/test eemc or battery or whatever? I can't find many resources at all on how to help me troubleshoot.

What you need to do is in Odin options... Uncheck auto reboot. Find the exact .PIT file for your model and put it in odins PIT spot and ignore that it says it's for developers only just add the PIT anyway and in options again where you unchecked auto reboot make sure you check NAND erase all and then add your firmware and after odin flashes it and finally says PASS then disconnect the phone and then hold the volume down button and power button at the same time and when the screens turns off let them go and as soon as it comes back on select nothing but factory reset and when it gets into the recovery mode if it list options and you see factory reset a few lines down use the volume down button to move down to highlight the factory reset option and hit the power button and on the next page again go down to YES and hit the power button again and then let it finish and reboot and least give the phone a good 20 minutes after it's rebooted to get itself setup and to the point where you can start setting it up the same way you did the day you turned it on for the very first time.. Let me know if this works and don't skip any steps.

The newer Samsung's do not use eMMc they use the newer UFS 2.0 which is why the note 5 and S6 never got micro sd slots. I could be wrong here but I don't think so.

Well ****, we're worse off than when we were before. I don't know if this in indicative of a hardware problem, but now that the battery has had time to drain, I plugged it in and left if for a day, but any time the cord is plugged in the phone is stuck in an infinite no command/reboot loop, and I can't get to download mode with up arrow + home + power like I could before. With the phone unplugged it has no life whatsoever.
Could this be a battery issue the whole time?

Yes and it sounds like a hardware issue by draining that fast.. Did you try holding the volume down button and power button until it reboots?

So When it was plugged in to my comp it would not go into download mode...If I unplugged the cord, it would not turn on.
I got a wall outlet charger instead, with that plugged in I could get to download mode, and when I tried to turn the phone on without the wall charger it gave a 'battery 0%' warning...
Anyway, I got it to down load mode, unplugged the wall charger, moved it to the comp and did the flash with the pit file...Odin said it passed. I restarted the phone, picked factory reset. It installs a few quick things, goes to 'erasing' and after about 20 seconds, freezes, same as last time. Now it's back to no command

How long did you let it sit there? Do the factory reset again and let it sit there for a little bit and see if it eventually goes. If not boot into recovery again and read to see what version firmware is listed.

It kicks itself off and goes to a 'no command' after the erasing screen gets stuck and quits 'twirling' for awhile. I don't know how to see a firmware listing. I can't get to a recovery mode(using that terminology to google some screenshots, I don't have that). The phone boots to maintenance mode only...any option I pick there goes to no command. I can use the vol down + home + power to get into download mode so it will be seen by the pc. That's about it

That means that it didn't flash fully.. What firmware version did you flash in odin? And you can see the phone version again by going into download mode too it should be right at the top after pressing the volume up.
