Put battery out and in ??? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Folks,
i've read more times "put battery out and in" for example: to go from downloadmode directly into recovery mode without reset, or just to leave the download mode without flashing.
It is a bad solution, the backcover clips won't get better this way.
You can force a reboot by holding the powerbutton long enough (may 5-10 seconds, i don't check how long exactly).
Same way for the 3-button procedure (vol-up, home and power or vol-down, home and power).
For example if you are in download mode and decide to reboot without flash, keep holding powerbutton and the device will reboot.
Or
If you are in download mode an need to get directly in recovery mode just press the combo (vol-up, home and power) till it reboots and you will go to the recovery.
No need to stress the backcover any more. except for changing sim-,sd-card or akku.
I have a GT-I9000, bootloader and sbl from JVK, but shure it works with other bootloaders/sbl too if they accept the 3-button combo, else it may work for reboot only.
I apologize for my english, hope its not too bad (for a german )
Have a nice day!
edit: works too if phone is freeze

Well good for you, I, and probably many others, didn't. So thanks for the tips!

And this is development how?

very useful post !
especially in the dev section with all those new testing & unstable kernels, roms, etc.
this is what I've done for some time know
should have written this somewhere down - didn't know that only few people know about this
I found out about this the hard way (while my SGS was a semi-brick)

maybe usefull for developing?
does this matter for normal use?

I've always do this because I'm using Case Mate protection case.
Since my Case Mate is using dual layer protection, opening battery case every time can be so painful...
This method is very useful...
Thanks for sharing anyway...

I tried telling people the same, but they insist in that stupid solution, stupid because it is extra work and not healthy for the phone...

You only really need pull the battery when something has gone wrong otherwise the power button is the posted way .
But i do prefer case off when flashing so i can drop the battery out if i need to or want to quickly .As i have had to take the sim card out and external memory card its case off anyway .

Unresponsive (bricked??) HTC Touch Pro 2. Help please.

Ok, so I have encountered something NONE of us EVER want to encounter. My phone has died. It will NOT boot up on battery power and is now cycling in the tri-color screen over and over again. It does this when plugged into USB port and wall outlet. I have the HTC Euro stock ROM on the SD card in the phone, trying to get it to reflash. It gets to the screen : "loading" and "checking" ....but then boots down again and cycles all over again.
I flashed the NRG 10/11 Photon ROM. I have the first HRDSPL from Olinex. My phone is the Euro version, unlocked, unbranded. I use TMobile in the US. .
Please, there has GOT to be someone out there that can help me. You guys are really sharp!! Please ....I need my phone!
I cannot even do a hard reset either. I push the power, send and end button all at the same time. I get no response.
What are my options here? Thanks in advance.

1: So if when you pull out your battery it goes off. And on reinsert, when you try to turn on or hardreset ie: hold the TALK/SEND, END and POWER buttons until you see this message on the screen.
"This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press VolUp to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel."
At that point you release the buttons and press Volume up to perform.
It doesnt do anything?
2: As soon you do the AC adapter in or USB power, it starts cycling on his own? If not, try to hardreset then.
3: If you wait like 30 minutes, with cycling on USB on PC, can it hardreset out hisself? Ive readed another guy who had issues and somehow it fixed itself.

I waited all night long for it to do that. No luck.
Now I get to the point where I see where it recognizes my .nbh file and has a splash screen. BUT......it will not go any further past that now. I press the power button to continue, but it just cycles again and the whole process starts over. I see a reallllllllllllly quick sliver of the update bar, but it disappears fast b/c of the recycling process.
Please dont give up on me. Thanks.

I saw in another thread that you have tried removing your SIM card with no success. Have you tried without the SD card as well?
Also, does pressing the hardware reset button under the battery cover do anything?

I do not have the SIM card in there. I never have flashed with a SIM card in there. Always read to take that out when you do that.
The SD has to be in there b/c it is the only thing that has a shot of getting the ROM to the phone. Active Sync wont connect b/c phone keeps powering on/off with its cycling issue. So the SD card must be present with the .nbh file on it. I am just in hopes that it will read it somehow. I am sooooo tired of pressing the power button for it to continue, only to have it turn right back off.
ps, reset button does nothing either.
ugh.
Aaah sorry, didnt remeber who was talking about it... There were few cases like that if I remeber correctly...
Ive been here since TyTN, does it make 4yrs or something? I have never heard anything like this.. Because the phone goes to the 3 color screen mode, Im pretty sure someone with skills will come up with a solution, but it might take time though...

So the 3 color screen mode. Exactly what is its purpose and why does it keep cycling over and over and over?
Its the bootloader, you should PM Olinex...

Certainly, but I was curious to find out if taking the SD card out had any effect on the cycling or your ability to hard reset.

I wish.... It just cycles...over and over and over. No matter if the SD card is there, thrown across the room, or crushed in my hand. lol
I always flash with SIM and memory card (as I use UC almost everytime) and never had any problems with any device.
PM the board guru's about this and you will learn more in a single message than you will from this topic in a week.
Last post maybe came out little harsh. I only meant that your problem sounds so serious, that you should contact the gurus before you do something that could even make the matter worse...

Hey, it's ok. I didnt take it as harsh. I have contacted cmonex. I am in hopes she can help me out. I need to put an APB out on ALL GURUS!!
Actually, that is why I posted here.
I've noticed during the flashing process it doesn't take power from USB. What is the status of the battery? It occured to me that it might be power cycling because it's going to a part of the process that only takes power from battery and there isn't enough to do what it wants to do. (+50% ?)
Just a thought ... good luck dude I hope you get it sorted.

Yes, I thought of that as well. But I had it plugged in all night...but I have no idea if it charged b/c I cant see the screen that gives the battery's status. ?? So, I dont know how to get around this part of it. I KNOW for a fact that my battery was low when the phone died. I dont know how to get it charged back up to do this type of diagnostic test.....??
Maybe it's not getting a proper charge if all it's doing is looping ... I figured you wouldn't be able to get battery status after I posted haha ... But it is interesting you said the battery was low when this all happened.
Do you know anyone near you that can lend you a fully charged battery? Does it boot up immediately if you take SD card out, put battery back in and plug in USB power? If you can't get it to where the phone is off and charging with orange light then a spare battery could be worth a try.
Don't worry dude I'm sure cmonex or olipro will have far more useful advice but no harm trying in the meantime

[Q] How do I start Galaxy S in safe mode?

Hi,
my Galaxy S GT-i9000 got into force close loop and I am now stuck after Android boot. Before performing a hard reset (and spending a week setting up the phone and apps again) I would like to try with safe mode: unfortunately I was so far unable to find how to get into safe mode on it.
Anybody could help? Thank you.
BB
I don't remember there being a Safe Mode. Although you can go to Download Mode and flash a new firmware. It should fix the problem you're having.
There is a safe mode. I've unintentionally ended up in it a few times. I have no clue how to get there willingly though.
Edit: That was easy... Just power on the phone while holding the menu button, just as on a bunch of other android phones.

Thank you. I already checked I can get to the recovery mode menu, but I understand this would reset everything on the phone, including personal settings and third party apps. I am looking for a way to avoid this, if at all possible: all I need to do is uninstall a looping application.

Ok I found it. For some reason on my Galaxy safe mode is entered by pressing
Menu+Home+Power On
Thank you everybody for your help, the phone is in good shape again now.

Today i restartet my SGS and on the reboot i swyped the Display over my T-Shirt to clean the screen. Even before the Pin-Input showed up, in the left bottom corner i had "safe mode" written. As my intention was not to go into this mode i restartet again.
After this, my widgets didn´t work anymore, so i had to take them of the screen and put them again. And all my well sortet apps in the menu are now unsorted.
But no big deal.
Finally i found out how to go into the Safe-Mode every time you need.
As soon as you start your SGS you have to press for a half a second constantly the left Softkey, meaning don´t have it pressed all the time, but touching it every half a second. When coming to the Pin-Input you cann stop it and you will see on the left bottom corner Safe-Mode!
Very usefull if a third-party Launcher or Widget makes some trouble.
i tried it, it didn't work
Which firmware are you on?

Really? tried it 3 times now and every time i was able to get in. I´m on 2.1 I9000XXJF5
You have to touch the button as soon as the screen shows the Samsung Logo, even when the Softkey only will light up 2-3 seconds after the Power on!
I´ve taken a photo. As my Phone is in german it shows not Safe mode but sichere Modus. But it is the same.
it might be another key for the JH2 ROM
i'll see if i can figure it out, but so far the few methods we've figured out doesn't work on the JH2

[Q] how to keep apps from getting erased

hey so i have a Samsung captivate and i just installed continuum v5.5 but every time to turn off my phone all my apps get erased. what can i do about that?
You flash the rom from cwm 2.5? That's my guess...
Try reflashing from where there. With talon kernel that has cwm 3.

im sorry but im really new to this and i have no idea what that means. All i have one is install the new package and now when i turn off my phone all my apps that i downloaded from the market get erased.
What you were on before you flashed that?
Anyway...from where you are now just boot into recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache
Then reflash the rom.
umm for some reason i cant get into recovery mode.........haha any tips on that first
Turn off the phone. Hold volume up and power...that should do it
The extended power menu while it's on...
Or adb...
I have been trying those. none work, all that show up is a white screen that have AT&t and that says world phone. what should i do?
wait up!! AT&T screen?? FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!!!! although i have no idea how you have been able to boot at all... you still have stock eclair/froyo bootloaders. thats a gingerbread rom requiring updated bootloaders..so how it even got into the os is confusing me?
use this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
then take a few days and READ!!! you skipped a HUGE step.
Im so confused now. it just stopped working? when i turn on my phone all that shows up is the AT&T world globe thingy and i cant get farther then that. I tired clicking the power and volume buttons but im just stick on the globe thing. is my phone like broken now??

no. if it comes on its not broken.
what you need to do is pull the battery...and leave it off. come back to the forums and after you have spent several hours READING up on what exactly you are doing to your phone THEN you will have the knowledge to fix your phone.
this **** shouldnt be taken so lightly if you have literally no idea what you are doing.
yaaaaa i think im going to be done with all the rooting thing in till ive learned more about it. But is their a way to get it back to the way that i bought it.?
Yeah you just put it into download mode and use odin one click
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
This is a perfect example of why I ask that everyone to spend at least a day learning about what they are doing before doing it. Flashing a Rom to your device has some very major side effects if even one step is done wrong.
I tried to put it in download mode. it doesn't work, my phone will turn on and off but will just sit in the start up screen but thats all that it will do?
You will need a jig to force download mode.
Go to mobiletechvideos.com he has a video on how to make one actually heres the link to that video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0... if you can't get yours to work or think it might be to difficult after watching the video he also sells them pre made for under 10 us dollars.
There are also quite a lot of useful videos for beginners to watch and learn about what you're doing.http://mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=31 that whole page is worth a look...
so theirs no other way to get the phone back to normal? If their isn't anther way to get it back to normal then can i just call AT&T to send me anther phone because this phone is only 3 days old??
thats what all of my posts have been trying to do. get you to normal.
especially the ones WITH LINKS!!
yaa ik, sorry what i was trying to say was that is their any other ways to get the phone into download mode that doesn't take making that JIG?
with phone off try holding both volumes and inserting the usb cable thats connected to your pc.
or take out the battery, plug it in and hold the volume buttons, then with the buttons still held indert the battery.
if those dont work the jig will. its easy to make...or if you cant manage its cheap to buy...
what is it with people so resistant to trying to make/buy a jig? both ways its under 10 bucks, and that beats the hell out of not having a phone, and the frustration of trying everything else before you get around to a jig. make/buy one now you will have it for future use. its never not handy to have. i made one before i flashed anything so i would have an out if it went bad.
Okay well thanks to everyone who helped, im going to try to make the jig thingy but if i can't make that then im just going to throw it against a wall and use the insurance to get a new one. thanks though

[Q] I messed up. Can get into download mode that's all..

I hope someone can help me here, I'm posting with the belief that this may be a simple enough problem (With the hope).
I tried to install a Custom Recovery on my Galaxy S using this tutorial - wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd
I managed to get to step 6, and a blue bar appeared, but then i could not do step 7.
Now i cannot boot into recovery mode, nor will the phone boot past the Samsung Galaxy S logo.
I can still get into download mode, but Odin does not detect the phone.
. I have changed cable and tried different versions of Odin..
When i turn on the phone normally it shows the Samsung Galaxy S logo, blinks, and then reboots and does the same.
When i try to enter recovery, i get the same, unless i connect it to the PC. I then get an 8 pointed star, like the loading flash circle thing - the same as a flash video loading except it does not move.
I have also removed the battery and tried to enter recovery and download mode while inserting the battery.
I have removed the SIM and battery for a few minutes.
when i try to start Zadig, with the phone connected in Download mode, i get "Gadget Serial" as the device connected. I used to get "Samsung USB Composite Device"
I have tried many different things and read over the recommended threads on this forum. I think i need a bit more pointing in the right direction.
I really hope somebody can help me. I am very worried that i may have bricked it.
Thank you.
Try this:
This feature is great for people who
a) Have a bad KIES flash
b) Stuff up their phone somehow
c) Accidentally flash something dodgy via ODIN
d) Some other random occurence
To test this feature you just need to start with your phone turned off... Best way to be sure is to remove the battery.
Then
1. Put battery back in
2. Press and hold Volume Up + Home Key
3. Continue holding those buttons and then press and hold power button.
4. When you see the logo pop up release power button ONLY
5. Keep holding two buttons from step 2 until you enter recovery mode.
I hope this helps?

Ok, Don't worry, Charge your phone battery to 100%, leave over night. ( keep charger connected to your phone overnight)
Best to have a fully charged battery in these situations!
Keep calm, and read and prepare what you want to do next.. Don't try everything in a frantic effort to get your phone started again.
I know it's difficult, but there are lots of threads on how to rectify most problems.
I wish you Good luck!!
sorry to ask some stupid question, but can u make sure what versiom ur fone is?

This is a disaster. I tried to power it on to any mode there before i saw your post.
I needed to update the phone, because an app i needed for studying was only available on Android 4+.
Now no phone..
I saw a few threads, i hope after i leave it overnight i'll be able to power it.
If not, probably a JIG?
I don't fancy making one, but if i have to, i guess i'll give it a try. I don't think i could wait a week or more for a premade one to be delivered.
Anyway, for now, i'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for help/tips and reply.
I'll post back tomorrow, hopefully with some better news.

Sorry to say, most likely you will need a USB JIg to fix the problem you have. :/
If you linked the correct page when you said you tried to do this- and if I opened the correct page, that takes you to an SII section. Those are SII firmwares, not for the S.
So as compacity said, please clarify what device you have... Whether its an I9000 (galaxysmtd is for the I9000) or an I9100 (the firmware page you linked). If you do have an I9000, then your brick comes from flashing a different device's rom onto the S, which would give this error in Odin beause its incompatible.
In this case, you'd probably need a USB Jig to come out of it.
Try what the others said and hopefully you'll be at least able to enter Download mode before resorting to a jig, but considering your situation, I have to say realistically a jig is your best bet :/

You need a usb jig. It will get you into download mode. Now you need to flash cf root, which will come with cwm recovery. Recovery mode should work now. If you get computer!phone, then re-flash cf root. Now you should be able to flash CyanogenMod via cwm recovery. Thank if I helped!

Both helped a lot, thanks.
I had to end up bringing the phone to a repair shop
Something i am not inclined to do if i can avoid it. Especially if i caused it, i would hope i could undo it. But because i need a jig, and i wouldn't have time to get one or make one before Monday, i had to bring it to someone else.
I am buying the materials for a jig, and maybe going to buy one also, for future.
@Soryuu - Yep, i linked to the page, so i must have flashed the wrong firmware.
I'm angry with myself because i read everything else carefully. I had been reading all day. I guess i was just tired and thought I had got to the final hurdle. I was careless.
@huskyT - Thanks, will know that for future reference. I have two old Android phones somewhere. One is a Galaxy Europa, and one is an LG (not sure what model). Both are borked in some way, but i could probably use them for practice. I think the Galaxy Europa is flashed badly. Not by me. (Thankfully).

Well....
I would have been quicker if i had ordered a jig and done it myself.. (Worth mentioning, i had told guy in phone shop what happened, and about the required "jig")
I collected my phone from the shop today, after a week, and i was told "Your phone is f*****d". To which i replied, "what? are you sure, i mean, i have only flashed it with SGS2 firmware, i'm under the impression it is very hard to break/brick, if i have a jig."
He told me, "Nope, it's beyond repair, it won't work. If you want, i can use the screen and other parts, i'll buy it off you for €40"
No thanks.
So now i am on the lookout for a premade jig. Does anybody know where i can buy one?
I meant to last week, but things happened, and without a phone i was running around a bit...
I'm going to check ebay, but if somebody could recommend somebody reliable, i'd prefer that. Thanks.
I bought it from ebay, no problem...but just saw a couple of minutes ago that also on amazon germany these jigs are offered now/in the meantime....

Thanks.
I bought a jig, and it arrived today. Have phone in charger.
Do i just plug the jig in?
Or do i also do the three button press?
The screen is completely black, and nothing appears on it.
only plug the jig in, thats all... phone will start in download mode of its own. :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:

Thanks, going to leave it charging for a little longer, and try it.
If it doesn't work, would a motherboard for the Samsung Galaxy S be easy to replace? I have found one unlocked for €25.
EDIT
Found a tear down video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxPWsLd05F4
yes thats not so difficult...only thing a bit complicated is to open the back or middle cover...but there are a few movies on youtupe where you can see how it can be opened and dismounted....btw for the first try with the jig battery has not to be that full...only if it starts in download mode and you can flash it via odin I would recommend to charge it complete.

I am after removing it from the charger, and inserted the jig. It's in about 30 seconds now, and nothing is happening..
that sounds not good...ususaly it takes only a few seconds or perhaps a minute till it starts to download mode....sorry for no better news....

What seems to have happened, is i tried to flash it with SGS2 rom. So is it unbrickable?
I am not sure but I think that minimum the bootloader is damaged...there is one more possibility: to repair it via jtag...but for this you have to find someone, who ones one and can repair it....some of the guys don't take much money for such a repair, but with transport costs ets...perhaps it would be cheaper and faster if you take the new mainboard you mentioned.

Note 5 Broke itself for no reason, won't boot to Android OS

Just looking for opinions. I have a stock note 5, no jail breaking or weird loads. Just a run of the mill Note with way too many candy crush saga apps. We weren't even using it a couple days ago when it turned itself off. Reboot just got it stuck in an endless boot cycle. Loading normal or safe mode gets you the android 'no command' blue screen of death.
I figured maybe bad update...possibly load new firmware. Samsung's smart link application doesn't work, as apparently I don't have a S/N, it doesn't exist and you need that for smart link. (It's not the IMEI.) Anyway, Samsung over the phone told me to try a best buy samsung rep, they'd flash it for free. I thought that sounds safe. But they couldn't get it to recognize my phone....Verizon won't help me, I'm past the year warranty. But still owe too much money to pay it off and get a new one through them...That leaves flashing it myself with Odin. So I did. It went ok, it said it PASSED, the phone rebooted....It started a little config in what looks to be a factory reset type screen...it got to 'erasing', refresh arrow spinning to show me it was going, then it just stops. The world stops and no amount of letting it sit every gets it to go again. Rebooting still has 'no command' and no signs of life.
Any thoughts on what might be going on? Anything else to load or try? The phone's no good to me ****ed, so I'm open to suggestions. Likewise, does it sound like any hardware related things? Is there any hope? would love to hear a first impression from someone more experienced with phones and Android.
Try flashing the latest stock firmware in Odin using "Nand erase all" ticked under options..
Let us know how it goes..

Same Problem it looks like. Odin does it's thing for about 3 minutes. Says 'PASS'. Phone restarts, does some initializing bar moving stuff for 10 seconeds, it switches to 'Erasing' then the phone just stops
That's unfortunate dude.
I'm really sick of Samsung phones. They're just terrible. As someone who's had to replace their screen twice and battery three times, it shouldn't be difficult to replace the motherboard.
This happened to my NOTE 5 (SM-N920V) as well
YOUR NOT ALONE! THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY NOTE 5
I was fishing, this morning at about 7am when my phone rebooted all on its own to the same Samsung Boot Logo screen then stuck as well. NO RYHME NO REASON, I have never, ever cracked, hacked or smacked this phone either,:highfive:
"The only updating that has been done has come via Verizon/Samsung..." But none recently ...that I recall as in, the last week or so.
While I will admit doing "it" (hacking, cracking, modding,) to other android phones (Obviously or I wouldn't have a membership here). But this Note 5? No... Maybe perhaps that's why its broken now? LOL...
It does always seem that my continued membership here is not in vain though, ......
For now, I will do whatever it takes to get it back... .......next to buying a new phone or it not coming back on ever.
I will share here what I did to resolve the issue. And I will without a doubt utilize "EVERY" resources here at XDA-DEVELOPERS to do it, and happily without the help of Verizon or Samsung.
So far I have determined that my Note 5 version is not commonly referenced here which is: the SM-N920V (Verizon U.S)
Thank you XDA-Developers this is why we need informational communities like this in our lives! :victory:
Even though I may still go nutz during this repair... if it happens.... Wish us luck!

might be bad emmc look into booting from sd card not possible on all devices but may be a start,I had a note 4 do the same thing and most def was bad emmc
Unfortunately, my sd card is internal on the Note5 the unique thing is the Note5 does not have an pop of back plate that covers the battery as, like previous versions which allow the back cover to be removed easily, I mean yeah I can take this thing apart, but its not conventional.

What you need to do is in Odin options... Uncheck auto reboot. Find the exact .PIT file for your model and put it in odins PIT spot and ignore that it says it's for developers only just add the PIT anyway and in options again where you unchecked auto reboot make sure you check NAND erase all and then add your firmware and after odin flashes it and finally says PASS then disconnect the phone and then hold the volume down button and power button at the same time and when the screens turns off let them go and as soon as it comes back on select nothing but factory reset and when it gets into the recovery mode if it list options and you see factory reset a few lines down use the volume down button to move down to highlight the factory reset option and hit the power button and on the next page again go down to YES and hit the power button again and then let it finish and reboot and least give the phone a good 20 minutes after it's rebooted to get itself setup and to the point where you can start setting it up the same way you did the day you turned it on for the very first time.. Let me know if this works and don't skip any steps.

The newer Samsung's do not use eMMc they use the newer UFS 2.0 which is why the note 5 and S6 never got micro sd slots. I could be wrong here but I don't think so.

Well ****, we're worse off than when we were before. I don't know if this in indicative of a hardware problem, but now that the battery has had time to drain, I plugged it in and left if for a day, but any time the cord is plugged in the phone is stuck in an infinite no command/reboot loop, and I can't get to download mode with up arrow + home + power like I could before. With the phone unplugged it has no life whatsoever.
Could this be a battery issue the whole time?

So When it was plugged in to my comp it would not go into download mode...If I unplugged the cord, it would not turn on.
I got a wall outlet charger instead, with that plugged in I could get to download mode, and when I tried to turn the phone on without the wall charger it gave a 'battery 0%' warning...
Anyway, I got it to down load mode, unplugged the wall charger, moved it to the comp and did the flash with the pit file...Odin said it passed. I restarted the phone, picked factory reset. It installs a few quick things, goes to 'erasing' and after about 20 seconds, freezes, same as last time. Now it's back to no command

How long did you let it sit there? Do the factory reset again and let it sit there for a little bit and see if it eventually goes. If not boot into recovery again and read to see what version firmware is listed.

It kicks itself off and goes to a 'no command' after the erasing screen gets stuck and quits 'twirling' for awhile. I don't know how to see a firmware listing. I can't get to a recovery mode(using that terminology to google some screenshots, I don't have that). The phone boots to maintenance mode only...any option I pick there goes to no command. I can use the vol down + home + power to get into download mode so it will be seen by the pc. That's about it

That means that it didn't flash fully.. What firmware version did you flash in odin? And you can see the phone version again by going into download mode too it should be right at the top after pressing the volume up.
