[Q] I messed up. Can get into download mode that's all.. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope someone can help me here, I'm posting with the belief that this may be a simple enough problem (With the hope).
I tried to install a Custom Recovery on my Galaxy S using this tutorial - wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd
I managed to get to step 6, and a blue bar appeared, but then i could not do step 7.
Now i cannot boot into recovery mode, nor will the phone boot past the Samsung Galaxy S logo.
I can still get into download mode, but Odin does not detect the phone.
. I have changed cable and tried different versions of Odin..
When i turn on the phone normally it shows the Samsung Galaxy S logo, blinks, and then reboots and does the same.
When i try to enter recovery, i get the same, unless i connect it to the PC. I then get an 8 pointed star, like the loading flash circle thing - the same as a flash video loading except it does not move.
I have also removed the battery and tried to enter recovery and download mode while inserting the battery.
I have removed the SIM and battery for a few minutes.
when i try to start Zadig, with the phone connected in Download mode, i get "Gadget Serial" as the device connected. I used to get "Samsung USB Composite Device"
I have tried many different things and read over the recommended threads on this forum. I think i need a bit more pointing in the right direction.
I really hope somebody can help me. I am very worried that i may have bricked it.
Thank you.

Try this:
This feature is great for people who
a) Have a bad KIES flash
b) Stuff up their phone somehow
c) Accidentally flash something dodgy via ODIN
d) Some other random occurence
To test this feature you just need to start with your phone turned off... Best way to be sure is to remove the battery.
Then
1. Put battery back in
2. Press and hold Volume Up + Home Key
3. Continue holding those buttons and then press and hold power button.
4. When you see the logo pop up release power button ONLY
5. Keep holding two buttons from step 2 until you enter recovery mode.
I hope this helps?
Also have you tried everything on this thread:

I hadn't seen that thread, but i have gone over tons of them Thanks for reply.
I eventually got Odin to detect it and I tried this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
It came up red and said failed.
I closed odin and disconnected the phone. Now i can't even turn it on.. Nothing. I am hoping the battery died, and it's a coincidence..
No response at all to any buttons... I haven't done anything else.
If i can get it to power up again, i'll try those tips.

Ok, Don't worry, Charge your phone battery to 100%, leave over night. ( keep charger connected to your phone overnight)
Best to have a fully charged battery in these situations!
Keep calm, and read and prepare what you want to do next.. Don't try everything in a frantic effort to get your phone started again.
I know it's difficult, but there are lots of threads on how to rectify most problems.
I wish you Good luck!!

sorry to ask some stupid question, but can u make sure what versiom ur fone is?
is it i9000?, or i9001 or i9003? or korean anycall? as far as i know, flashing i9000 ROM to i9003 will hardbrick da device.

This is a disaster. I tried to power it on to any mode there before i saw your post.
I needed to update the phone, because an app i needed for studying was only available on Android 4+.
Now no phone..
I saw a few threads, i hope after i leave it overnight i'll be able to power it.
If not, probably a JIG?
I don't fancy making one, but if i have to, i guess i'll give it a try. I don't think i could wait a week or more for a premade one to be delivered.
Anyway, for now, i'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for help/tips and reply.
I'll post back tomorrow, hopefully with some better news.

Sorry to say, most likely you will need a USB JIg to fix the problem you have. :/
If you linked the correct page when you said you tried to do this- and if I opened the correct page, that takes you to an SII section. Those are SII firmwares, not for the S.
So as compacity said, please clarify what device you have... Whether its an I9000 (galaxysmtd is for the I9000) or an I9100 (the firmware page you linked). If you do have an I9000, then your brick comes from flashing a different device's rom onto the S, which would give this error in Odin beause its incompatible.
In this case, you'd probably need a USB Jig to come out of it.
Try what the others said and hopefully you'll be at least able to enter Download mode before resorting to a jig, but considering your situation, I have to say realistically a jig is your best bet :/

You need a usb jig. It will get you into download mode. Now you need to flash cf root, which will come with cwm recovery. Recovery mode should work now. If you get computer!phone, then re-flash cf root. Now you should be able to flash CyanogenMod via cwm recovery. Thank if I helped!

Both helped a lot, thanks.
I had to end up bringing the phone to a repair shop
Something i am not inclined to do if i can avoid it. Especially if i caused it, i would hope i could undo it. But because i need a jig, and i wouldn't have time to get one or make one before Monday, i had to bring it to someone else.
I am buying the materials for a jig, and maybe going to buy one also, for future.
@Soryuu - Yep, i linked to the page, so i must have flashed the wrong firmware.
I'm angry with myself because i read everything else carefully. I had been reading all day. I guess i was just tired and thought I had got to the final hurdle. I was careless.
@huskyT - Thanks, will know that for future reference. I have two old Android phones somewhere. One is a Galaxy Europa, and one is an LG (not sure what model). Both are borked in some way, but i could probably use them for practice. I think the Galaxy Europa is flashed badly. Not by me. (Thankfully).

Well....
I would have been quicker if i had ordered a jig and done it myself.. (Worth mentioning, i had told guy in phone shop what happened, and about the required "jig")
I collected my phone from the shop today, after a week, and i was told "Your phone is f*****d". To which i replied, "what? are you sure, i mean, i have only flashed it with SGS2 firmware, i'm under the impression it is very hard to break/brick, if i have a jig."
He told me, "Nope, it's beyond repair, it won't work. If you want, i can use the screen and other parts, i'll buy it off you for €40"
No thanks.
So now i am on the lookout for a premade jig. Does anybody know where i can buy one?
I meant to last week, but things happened, and without a phone i was running around a bit...
I'm going to check ebay, but if somebody could recommend somebody reliable, i'd prefer that. Thanks.

I bought it from ebay, no problem...but just saw a couple of minutes ago that also on amazon germany these jigs are offered now/in the meantime....

I bought a jig, and it arrived today. Have phone in charger.
Do i just plug the jig in?
Or do i also do the three button press?
The screen is completely black, and nothing appears on it.

only plug the jig in, thats all... phone will start in download mode of its own. :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:

Thanks, going to leave it charging for a little longer, and try it.
If it doesn't work, would a motherboard for the Samsung Galaxy S be easy to replace? I have found one unlocked for €25.
EDIT
Found a tear down video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxPWsLd05F4

yes thats not so difficult...only thing a bit complicated is to open the back or middle cover...but there are a few movies on youtupe where you can see how it can be opened and dismounted....btw for the first try with the jig battery has not to be that full...only if it starts in download mode and you can flash it via odin I would recommend to charge it complete.

I am after removing it from the charger, and inserted the jig. It's in about 30 seconds now, and nothing is happening..

that sounds not good...ususaly it takes only a few seconds or perhaps a minute till it starts to download mode....sorry for no better news....

What seems to have happened, is i tried to flash it with SGS2 rom. So is it unbrickable?

I am not sure but I think that minimum the bootloader is damaged...there is one more possibility: to repair it via jtag...but for this you have to find someone, who ones one and can repair it....some of the guys don't take much money for such a repair, but with transport costs ets...perhaps it would be cheaper and faster if you take the new mainboard you mentioned.

Disconnected from PC in the middle of Odin restore-phone wont' boot.

The USB cord was removed from my phone in the middle of an Odin restore (it was stuck at factoryfs.rfs). Now the phone won't boot and it isn't recognized by my computer when plugged in. Did I find a way to brick this thing? Any help would be appreciated. This is my fourth Captivate and I'm sure AT&T is going to start to give me a hard time. Thanks.
build a jig or buy one on ebay. you need to get into download mode and reflash to sotck.

Try all 3 methods to get into download mode first
yes, you can try the key combo first. but as i know, build 1010 or later wont work for the key combo.
Got it back to d/l mode. Now it's stuck at factoryfs.rfs-same as last time. I'm finished with this phone. AT&T can send me another. This is what happened to the past two phones. Stuck on a Odin restore and can't get it up again.
Edit: Just booted up. That's a relief. Thanks.

If it had happened on more than one phone, you may consider looking at odin...maybe remove and reinstall our check your drivers or computer...just double check all of little stuff that might be so obvious that they are not obvious

so if your potentially bricking the phones, what do you tell AT&T that happened? and do they not ever check or whats the deal?
As far as I know at the wareenty centers they check for physical and water if they do attempt to boot as long as nothing looks custom they wont bother with checking the recovery or key combos samsung takes care of the rest they just want functional hardware..oh dont mention anything about modding. If anything syncing crashed is the best explaination. Tested.

Sorry I'm late getting back. My phone is up and running again. Got in to D/L mode and flashed back to stock. Got stuck on the AT&T logo, but used Odin one more time and it booted right up. The first time I brought in the phone, the tech took it to the display for 2 minutes and called the warranty dept for me. I think that it helped that the Chiefs playoff game was on. They didn't seem to want to be bothered! The phone rep asked about water and physical damage. No questions about modding. The second time I did it at home over the phone. Again, no questions about modding. I told the rep both times that I was trying to transfer music to the phone via Kies and it crapped out on me. It always help to play dumb and act like you don't know too much.

I had the same exact problem when i was just starting to mess around with roms and my biggest issue was the sequence that it took to flash properly. i kept opening odin then putting my phone in download mode and THEN plugging it into use as opposed to how it should have been which is holding vol up and vol down pressed then plugging in usb.

That's the weird thing. I'm somewhat new, but have been flashing my Captivate since Sept. When the original Cognition came out I was flashing daily. I think my problem was, it took longer than usual to flash to stock, I got impatient and didn't realize I could get to D/L mode by taking the battery out, holding power and inserting battery. I always used the button combo. Live and learn.
same problem
Ok i have the same problem as the original post stated, running odin and disconnected right at the beginning of the rom flash! this phone wont power up, and my jig (which i have used before) will not work! Is it done for!?
Ur last hope lays in adams Am I bricked thread, where u'll find an app that checks what state ur phone is in (linux or ubuntu needed)
nevermind, I tried harder and the jig worked, its one of the homemade jigs, where you cut up your charger, and use resistors to create the circut . . . . jankety but i got it to work thanks anyway though
Glad you got it, but I would buy a jig and keep it in a drawer. Just in case.

Can't get into recovery/dload mode Phone boots to white At&t screen makes few sounds

Can't get into recovery/dload mode Phone boots to white At&t screen makes few sounds
I have recently messed up my Captivate when I was trying to flash a ROM. My phone goes up to the white At&t sign and then makes a few sounds and stops. It also goes to the charging screen when plugged in the cpu when off. I have tried countless ways to get it to go into dl mode or even recovery mode. Ive tried: ADB vol up and down plus power with usb plugged in/battery put in, vol down usb plugged in/battery put in, vol up usb plugged in/battery put in, just vol up and down usb plugged in/battery put in, and nothing seems to be working. WITHOUT someone tellin me to use a jig can ANYBODY please help me find a way to do this. I have even pressed menu and volume down while the phone was in off charging state with green bar loading and the cpu made a sound and cpu said unrecognized device...from there I have tried to root my phone hoping it goes into recovery mod(which ive done to fix my phone before) also from there i have tried odin but no recognizance and I also have tried adb reboot download and adb reboot recovery. NOTHING WORKS...someone please HELP ME!
thanks in advance
What rom were you trying to flash?
why SO resistant to someone telling you to make/buy a jig? its a very easy thing to make and it will solve your no download mode issue in seconds. if nothing else will get you in download mode a jig will for sure (unless your usb port is broken) you can try and exhaust all other solutions but after you've ripped all your hair out build a jig.
its like trying to dig a ditch with a garden spade when you have access to a back hoe
Good point
stud u really make a goop point about it being easier to buy a jig than to pull ur hair out. Which if this kid really was pulling his hair out he shouldn't have been doing this at all. But, I am also having this same problem. I was using a CM7 build and it worked great until i tried to install the gapps. then it went crazy. It rebooted itself and went through the Cyanogen Mod first screen then would get stuck on the CM7 blue android on skateboard bootscreen. If I touched the screen at the bottom right it would vibrate for some reason. Shortly after realizing I needed a jig for it I decide to buy a new one cause at the time I didnt know if I could properly make one. So I've kept my first captivate still trying to find a non-jig method. I recently taught myself begginers adb on Windows XP OS but I am very much a noob except for rooting and flashing. Any help of yours would be great anytime. Thanks,
Matt

Shows that youve been a member since Dec-2010 so Im assuming that you really did try everything because you have read and read and read (riiiiiiight!?) and without telling us whether you tried to flash a Froyo or Gingerbread ROM I'd sugguest that you buy a JIG. Its really the best solution and the less time consuming if you cant think of anything else to try. You can order one or make your own...literally took about 30 minutes for me to get my phone to a place where i can work with it....a trip to the radioshack and making the JIG and back home.
If you are making requests on specifically NOT to tell you to do it a certain way then you may have to accept that you might have to solve this problem on your own, especially if you said that you tried everything except the one thing that you cant do (which is what we might suggest) and probably will fix your situation.
So i re-read after making my first post to this. I've bought my 5th Cap. now and have quite a bit more knowledge than before. So my question is. If I've completely bricked my 3rd cap... No battery charge screen and all will a jig still work for me to get into download? I was tryin to come back from cm7 but something went wrong.... I really don't need the extra phone but it would be nice to have my back up

[Q] PROPERLY BRICkEd SAMSUNG GALAXY S I9000's ONLY - (no screen response)

hi iv had a serious journey with my sgs i9000 here's how it goes:
i had it on 2.2 and then upgraded it officially to 2.3.3
not much else happened until i realised i wanted voodoo sound (apparently it was hyped to be awesome....its not that great) and neither is the ext4 file system 2.3.3 seems to be just as fast...dont know if it was a major problem on 2.2 but it aint really on 2.3.3
so i flashed voodoo on 2.3.3 from some website ... downloaded the app for the sound as the kernel didnt support that...
then i was using it and played around with the settings in clock work manager and i mounted and unmounted sd/card i dont think it made much difference but i thought i'd mention it ... the reason i did this is because when i tried to load a rom it wouldnt find all my sd card files beyond like the first 5 folders so i thought i'd give it a kick start....
then what happened is the phone just went off and i couldnt get it back on.... little did i know this was soft brick... i didnt know why....
i got the computer screen with the phone and exclamation mark.... i got into download mode a few times....
NOW .... i cant get it to turn on AT ALL using any combo buttons....
i think the nail in the coffin was flashing it with the "one-click odin" which was for the captivate but it said i could use it on the i9000 too.... which blatently screwed up the device....
anyway iv ordered a jig device... if this gets me into download mode ....what am i supposed to do...?
also is there anything i can do to get it into download mode now ? (bearing in mind iv done all the combo's ... some people say leave the battery out for a couple of minutes or half an hour....)
i think the bootloader is screwed up because it doesnt switch on....
even after i did a clean install of 2.3.3 with the pda phone and csc roms... it still just randomly switched off after 2/3 minutes of boot time....
what do i do now ?
samsung repair centre said they couldnt do anything and i'd have to send it back to samsung.... is it that bad?
Tried all the combos.... So you tried plugging in combo, then battery and also holding combo and then battery without cable in...
Have you read the pinned thread in general i think it is regarding, bricks?
Moving on
how did you do a clean install of 2.3.3 if you couldn't get DL mode??
Haven't read into the one click Odin so can't comment on that, but i think that was meant to be for softbricks...
anyway regarding the jig, just plug it in, and then wait a second or so, of not a minute (usually instant) and it should go into download mode. If it doesn't work again try some combos with the jig in...
If it is a hard brick i think you need to J-tag it, or yes take it to samsung in which case they may charge you for a repair, unless you say kies did it, and you didn't tell them everything you didi when you spoke to em.
Think thats everything lemme know if i missed out a question of yours or you want something better explained etc..
yeah i guess i was vague on the combo thing...
i've tried:
a) holding power, menu and volume down while sliding battery in (no usb cable in )
b) same as above with usb cable in
c)just menu and volume down buttons while i put battery in
d) both volume buttons and cable in
e)both volume buttons and battery in
.... the reason for d and e is because when i flashed it with the one click odin installer thing.. it restarted and showed a a t&t screen so i think its flashed the software with a samsung capacitive rom....so in theory i need to use those buttons ? not sure .... yet more questions....
i just hope this jig thing works ... btw do i have to pay sammy is my phone is under warranty?
how do i reflash the bootloader so it works properly? is that even the problem? do i need to do that? which pit file do i use ? some people say 512.... some say thats outdated and the new pit file is the thing to use .. ?

anyway regarding the jig, just plug it in, and then wait a second or so, of not a minute (usually instant) and it should go into download mode. If it doesn't work again try some combos with the jig in...
If it is a hard brick i think you need to J-tag it, or yes take it to samsung in which case they may charge you for a repair, unless you say kies did it, and you didn't tell them everything you didi when you spoke to em.
Think thats everything lemme know if i missed out a question of yours or you want something better explained etc..

ok now iv got it to turn on quite regularly .... but it keeps cycling (bootlooping) the at&t logo screen .... cant get into download mode or recovery mode.... just keeps boot looping.... oh and when i plug in the usb cable it just turns off.... its like i cant start it up with a usb in the phone...
update: been reading around and if anyone has this problem.... it looks like you might be hard bricked and apparently this cant be resolved via jig device..... dammit ...i'll still try and update the post... peace
So you haven't tried the jig yet?? because you haven't got it yet right
I don't think the device is bricked at all. Bricked usually means you have no response from it, so no matter what combo, actions you take you get no reaction.. However you are getting a boot although there is something going wrong as it does so...
So yes you need a new bootloader, i think every rom that you flash through odin has one, but i guess it may not, its best to search this, but i have read a few posts that say you need to click on update bootloader (i would check into this, as if this is wrong it will definitely brick your device)
My suggestion is go back to the onclick odin thing as that should do it, im sure someone has done something similar.
Yh so to sum up, i would have high hopes for a restoration (but what so i know ) and yes flashing a new bootloader with rom i reckon would do the trick. I think a stock rom will do it. Click on the stock rom link below and type in a few search terms in that thread to see if you pick up anything otherwise do a slightly wider one of the forum.

jig arrived today! .... i plugged it in ..... NOTHING ..... (read on theres more to the story!!!)
so i put it in nothing happened...... i thought maybe the jig device was not working so i tried it in the i9100 (s2) .... WORKED ...!
im really stubborn so i needed to make mine work too..... i read in a review of the jig device that someone bought one and it hadnt worked .... i hadnt ruled that out
anyway all day i just kept trying to jump start it by putting in the wall charger in and out ... i usually get some reponse from that....nothing apart from a second of something like a loading circle......
anyway then i left it on charge for an hour ....maybe the battery was dead and then tried again ....
(btw i was getting no response at all at this stage, not even the at&t thing ...)
so it was pure black screening me.....
then i got home from work and thought let me exchange the battery and see what happens....
i changed the battery and put the jig device in ...... VOILA !!! download mode....
all is well so far i've flashed with 2.3.3 pda, phone and csc files and checked repartition... i haven't messed with the bootloader option
seems to be working ok....also gave it a restart too ... last time it got to this point but it didnt turn back on after a restart ....
in conclusion .... charge battery fully externally (putting the power in the phone in this state was not charging it)
then with a full battery put jig in .... if that doesnt work you phone might be seriously bricked.... bravo to whoever dreamt up the jig device
Glad to hear the great news!
Nice
Thanks for this useful info

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S 100% unresponsive after Odin flash..

Oh dear...
I was experiencing the PHONE-->Triangle-->PC logo problem after a flash with odin went 'wrong' with my galaxy S phone.
I followed the guide here to solve it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981343
And as a result flashed my phone with the stock firmware from this file:
T959UVKA6_REV05_home_low_CL860813.tar
ODIN successfuly reported a green 'Success' Screen, so i disconnected the phone and tried to power it on. But the device is completely 100% unresponsive.
Nothing happens when i plug it into the PC, nor when i charge it from the mains.
I've searched and tried loads of suggestions from this and other forums, solutions including:
1. Removing battery, holding both VOL keys down, plugging into PC.
2. Holding normal HOME, VOL+, Power key. and HOME, VOL-, Power Key...
The problem is, i cannot get the galaxy s to respond to ANYTHING. So there is no way i can get into the download screen to re-flash.
Can anyone lend any advice to me about this issue? Is the phone totally dead now?
I read things about a JTAG? or somesuch cable, but these cables appear to only work as long you can get the "downloading" screen to work.
I don;t want to throw my phone away. Can anyone help?
Thanks

The first flash went 'wrong' becuase ODIN kept getting stuck at the setupconnection stage.
I learnt that removal of the SDCard and SIMCard was the route to fix this, but having fixed it, i flashed it with the stock ROM as detailed in the first post.
Thanks
Hi.
Firstly. If the phone will not response if you put the charger on it the bootloader seems to be dead.
Maybe a possibility would be to use a "USB jig"
Thats not the JTAG!!
JTAG is a develover device for flashing and only the samsung support will have such jtags.
JIG (for USB) is a resistor soldered to the usb connector.
You can buy that usb jig in amazon, ebay or do it yourself.
May you can switch the phone into download mode with it. But no guarantee..

i've just bought a USB jig on ebay for £1.25, hopefully it works.

Hm why did you flash Vibrant firmware? If you don't have vibrant of course it doesn't work..and if it contained bootloaders your phone is probably hard bricked (assuming vibrant had different bootloaders from i9000). But if you only flashed ROM then you have good chances of recovering it with jig..let's hope it works
Sent from my CM'd SGS
Does a "hard brick" mean it is proper dead?
I could have sworn i got that last firmware file from a samsung galaxy s forum?!
When flashing with proper firmware ("Cyanogen") will the flash re-write/fix the bootloaders? Or to put it another way... what options do i need to select in Odin?
Thanks
Jig Doesn't Work
Hi... sorry to self bump like this.
I bought a JIG off ebay, plugged it into the phone and sadly the phone did nothing.
Does that mean that the phone is ultra-dead, and there is NO HOPE?
I don;t want to throw it away mommy!
Could the battery be flat?
***Edit - I used the jig on a friends Galaxy S and the phone went into download mode ok. But it does not on mine.
If windows doesn't even recognise the device in any capacity at all... doesn't that mean Game Over? Surely any solution now would still require windows to see the device?

If you have a i9000, that's not a vibrant, and I think that rom you flashed probably contains bootloaders (since it's meant for recovery). Did you select phone bootloader update in odin?
You could try borrowing a battery/charging the one you have, it might be flat, hence why you can't turn on the phone at all. (Maybe vibrant bootloaders have some similarities). Also try check if vibrant has alternate ways of getting to download mode
Lastly, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330491
Thank you
I have tried using the JIG on a battery that is full, and i still get zero response from my phone.
The link you gave me looks at first glance to be quite complex, but seeing as it is dealing with hardware, it looks like it might work.
Cheers
J
If you open the firmware file with 7Zip, you'll be able to check if it contains bootloaders. Look for bootloader.bin and sbl.bin, if I recall correctly.
Also, what was the battery at when you were flashing? I remember accidentally flashing a Vibrant ffirmware when I first got my i9000m (due to the box saying "Samsung Vibrant", duh) and I distinctly remember my phone losing the ability to charge the battery. If your battery died, there's a good chance that nothing is happening because of this, even when you plug your phone in.
Your best bet sounds like getting a USB jig, I'd say. But check to see if the file you flashed contained bootloaders. If it didn't, it's probably something similar we've overlooked. If it does contain bootloaders, you may have bricked your device.
Use UnBrickable Mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330491
This allows total resurrection regardless if you've damaged your bootloaders or not. You just need to mod your device once and then you can upload Download Mode from then on!
If you'd like, I can perform the mod. I ask for $30 + shipping (usually $6 unless you're overseas). Send me a PM if you need me to do it.
There is no better option than UnBrickable Mod. If you have JTAG performed, then you've got a working device one time. If you do UnBrickable Mod, you can ALWAYS upload Download Mode by removing the battery, plugging it into the computer and pressing the "Download Mode" button on the resurrector I created.
SBL.BIN file located.
Oh deary deary me... the firmware DOES contain an SBL.BIN file :-(
Sadly, i tried all softbrick button pushing solutions on a friends FULL battery. But this had no effect either. And i have already bought a USB jig, that does nothing on my bricked phone, but DOES work on another GalaxyS. This might be the battery though.
Having never soldered anything in my life, i am reticent to start on the hardware hacking side of things if there is another option. But the longer this goes on, the less and less likely it sounds like another option is available.
For Sparta?

[Q] I CAN'T root my phone (2.2 froyo, factory reset)

Here is what I've tried so far:
1- SuperOneClick. The program hangs at a step where it reads "Check if rooted : false"
2- Galaxy One Click Root. Program is responsive but it stops at "* daemon started successfully *" and does nothing from there.
3- Copying the "update.zip" file to the root of my internal SD card. I'm greeted by a "E: Signature verification failed. Installation aborted" error.
All remediable steps to fix one or all problems REQUIRES root, so i'm in limbo here. I honestly am about to cry. This seemed a hell of a lot easier when I read about it...
Well, what's left here for me to do? I'm lost. I read so many threads here I honestly can't do it anymore. This is my last resort.
This phone is all stock, AT&T Captivate.
Sorry if this is the wrong section of this forum... New here.
Flash your phone via Odin to jf6 stock then try superoneclick
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
hold up on that flash back. It oculd cause you to loop. Try using SOC v1.9 or lower. Also make sure your computer has all the required updates installed.
So this developed into a new, bigger, problem. I tried THIS guide to flash cyanogenmod (latest) but, guess what, the freaking thing hanged. So I was left with the only option, severing the link between PC and phone, and rebooting the phone.
I get this "phone - attention sign - computer" image. I think to myself "oh sh#&, I bricked the phone" so I rebooted it once again and to my surprise, the phone won't turn on. Won't react to the usb cable (can't boot to download mode), won't react to wall charger, won't turn on with the power button.
The battery was almost full...
What the heck is going on!?!? I had this phone for 3 days and I already ruined it?

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound promising. Even if you have a black screen, I would still try to access DL mode with Odin open (pull battery, remove sim, put battery back in, hold both volume buttons and insert the USB cord, don't touch the power button). If you get a yellow com light in Odin, even if the screen stays black, you're in download mode. If that doesn't work, you could try a jig and then see if Odin recognizes it. If neither of those work, you'll need to send your phone out to someone like Adam Outler to have it unbricked.
I get nothing with Odin. I can't believe I bricked my phone like that. I thought I would get an error screen at least. But this is outrageous. It's like the phone shorted and fried from the inside.
All I can say is wow... My happiness of a new phone turned to ashes in 30 seconds. Nice waste of money.
If you buy a USB download jig it will get you out of soft brick situations and if Odin fails try heimindal

It didn't fry, it failed while flashing bootloaders. The bootloaders are what tell your phone what to do when you press power. Mismatched bootloaders = hard brick = no power up.
I would still try a jig, but if that doesn't work send a message to AdamOutler. He can give you the details of getting it unbricked.

Considering the flashing hanged at the very beggining, I'm 90% sure it HARD-bricked my device. A jig wouldn't work and I'm left with a very fancy paperweight.
There is NO power on whatsoever.

Please, someone tell me there is still hope (there isn't probably)

I suspect you are correct about the hard brick, but I would still try a jig. I had a failure flashing bootloaders once that killed my cappy, but though a stroke of fortune a jig still worked for me. You can build one for a couple of bucks of parts from Radio Shack, you've got nothing to lose. If not, it can be repaired.
Before you start looking at all that, make sure you are hard bricked. Easiest way is to use Linux Mode Detector. Use the link below labeled Captivate sig link, then choose am i bricked?.

Sorry but I'm not installing an OS just to use a program. I do believe the phone is hard-bricked though:
1- Doesn't power up with the on/off button
2- Doesn't go into recovery mode
3- Doesn't go into download mode
4- Doesn't light up when plugged into wall charger
If that isn't hard-bricked, then I'm really scared to find out what that really is
I sent a PM and an email to Adam Outler. I hope he replies it!
Linux is easier to use than you think, and it's a really handy tool to have when working with Android phones. You can install Linux entirely to a cheap thumb drive (I have a $4 4gb thumb drive running lubuntu) and it can get you out of a lot of Android related jams. If you're not willing to go through letting Linux up and running, might not want to do too much with phones either. I don't mean to be snarky, but I started using Linux casually a couple years before I started messing with phones and Linux is much more straightforward.
Edit: and if you have a multimeter around, check the voltage of your battery. Should be 4.2v=full, 3.5v ish is dead. If you battery pull, reinsert, hold volume up and down, and then connect to your pc with Odin open (don't hit power) what does Odin show? Last, did you get this phone used? Battery may be completely worn out, which would be why it was almost full and looks hard bricked now.
Wubi installer would be a better choice. And when your finished, it uninstalls just like an app. It's kind if a semipermanent dual boot. Check it out.

My understanding is that charging is controlled by firmware to protect the battery, so it won't even charge if it's bricked.

Right, or if the battery is so dead it can't start to turn on, it won't turn on. Or, if it was soft-bricked with no images to display, it may have killed itself without a firmware to allow it to charge properly. Not very likely, but there are a couple possibilities that end with a dead battery and no way to know.

Right. I'll check the V of the baterry once I get my hands on a multimeter.(somebody took all of them here at the house for some reason)
The multimeter read that the battery has 3.92V, so it's not dead. So to sum it up I only have two options now:
1- Try a USB jig
2- Attempt the UnBrickable mod/send it to Adam Outler
Both of them will take time. Unfortunate for me. Good news is that WILL have it back up and running. It will just take some time

So nothing whatsoever shows up in ODIN when you 1- batt pull, 2- batt reinsert, 3- plug in USB while holding either volume down, or volume up + vol down (w/o turning phone on)?
