[Q] Microsoft Exchange sync problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After about 2hours of using my phone on wifi the exchange sync (built in mail application) doesn't sync anymore (internet itself keeps working). If I then disable en enable wifi, it works again.
I connect to exchange via https (outlook anywhere). Same goes for calendar.

btw, my GMAIL keeps working with no problem. It's just exchange that stops syncing

have you tried restarting the phone?
might be a service that got stuck

yep, doesn't fix it.
I'm gonna test TouchDown to see if it shows the same behaviour

Are you accessing Exchange via "Email for Exchange" or "Corporate"?

what do you mean?
I've made an account on my phone that connects to the 'webmail' of the exchange. Official name is Outlook Anywhere.

noob with similar issue
I'm a relative newbie to this forum so unsure of posting protocol, apologies in advance.
But whatever. I have the att version of the galaxy--the captivate--and have had a hard time getting exchange to work reliably. I've several times deleted and re-created my exchange account, and it will sync initially, and sometimes once or twice thereafter. But then, it ceases working competely, simply saying it has a "connection error".
This happens whether I'm on my company's wi-fi, home wi-fi, or just over the air 3G. the only fix is to recreate the account, and that's a pain.
I had an old winmo HTC fuze for a couple years, and it worked fine with this exchange server--I don't think I ever had to recreate the account, and it was thoroughly reliable. I also borrowed an old G1 for a couple weeks, used Roadsync, and it worked fine too.
I read in another forum that advanced task killer was the culprit, so I deinstalled it. No change. I also read that turning the synchronization on & off from the power widget was worth trying. Also no change.
Any other ideas? I too will try a 3rd party client before returning the phone. I mostly like the phone otherwise, though the GPS problem is annoying.
Appreciate any help.

Tried it with Touchdown: same issue. It tells me: No available network. However website continue to work...
When I click some links/visit some sites, it starts working again...

it sounds like the Wireless or 3G goes into sleep mode when you are not using it.

I have a similar problem, my calendar is able to sync but contacts unable to sync with exchange server.

Secure SMTP

Howdy,
I am having trouble using smpts with our servers here at work. It sometimes works and most of the time does not. When it does not work I get a generic message about not being able to download messages or the account info is not right. Obviously the account info is right as I can occasionally send. Sending and receiving are set up for secure access to our servers. When we watch the server logs sometimes what we see is that the phone connects and then does nothing. Other times we never even see a connection attempt. Of course now and then it will send the mail like nothing is wrong. Sometimes it seems that a soft-reset helps to send mail ONCE, and then it is hosed again. The soft-reset does not always work either. I did not try to use secure email when I had the stock ROM, has anyone done this?
Anyone using secure email on the Cingular 8125 (built in mail client) and having issues? I'm running the Molski beta 3.2 rom and typically have the phone overclocked to 240. I've tried dropping the overclock but that did not seem to help the issue.
C
Certificate
I had to install a certificate, provided by my company, to receive email.
We have a certificate on our server but the weird thing is that every now and then the phone will send the mail. When it works it works as expected and we see the log in and file transfer in the server logs. Otherwise it either connects and then just seems to drop the connection or does not even show a connect attempt.
How/where did you install your cert?
Cy
Sorry but I dont understand the problem.
I assume you are trying to use push technology with an exchange server 2003 sp2.
If so the certificate you need is the one installed as the security check on the server. In my case this is a self generated one using a domain name I own. Some people use a more secure one that can be purchased.
A good place to start with this problem is to go to the mobile settings on the exchange server and turn off the security, this will allow you to check this is a certificate issue, you need to check the obvious as well, firewalls etc..
I use secure IMAP and secure SMTP on summiter's last rom and it works fine most of the time. Sometimes it won't connect, but i think that is either a cingular issue or it also seems to happen if my push email (Exchange) is doing some random activity on my phone. It is definitley more reliable than trying to view my hotmail...
My phone prompts me about the certificate every once in awhile. I just click yes and move on. It prompts me after rebuilding the phone or randomly every couple of weeks, usually after a reboot.
what protocol are you using for receiving email on the phone? pop or imap?
try it on a 2.xx rom and see how it goes.
We do not use exchange here. This is not a push setup. I have the phone checking for mail every 5 minutes. We have a very customized Linux server running sendmail. As I mentioned earlier, the incoming pop3s is working great. But most of the time I get an error on the phone when trying to send using smtps. About 1 in 5-10 attempts will go right through. It is very strange that on our server we do not see much in the way of details. It has to be something about the phone/cingular service. When we check the functionality of our server config using a desktop client configured for secure send/receive it works every time.
Cy
"Why do we always seem to get these intermittent problems?"
weird. if mine is going to have trouble it just won't connect at all. once it starts downloading email, it will send as well. Try the new 3.3 rom and see if it works for you with that one. Mine is working great on there
Yes, I loaded the new 3.3 yesterday and it seems to have fixed the issue. Although now I am having trouble with Cingular's IPs not resolving so our server won't forward my emails. :/ But, that is another issue.
Thanks to everyone for trying to help me with this issue.

Periodically get Support Code 0x85010004

About once a day I go to check my email on my Tilt and I will see that I don't have any messages. If I open up active sync I will see that the circular icon is orange and I have this error:
"You account in microsoft exchange server does not have permission to sync with your current setting. support code:0x85010004"
If I soft reset and then go back into active sync and manually run sync, everything will be fine again for about 24 hours and then for no reason at all I will get that error again.
It's pretty annoying because I have to check active sync every so often to make sure that it's still working and hasn't crapped out on me.
When I searched on this problem it seemed like everyone else who was getting this error was having it as a constant problem. With me it just shows up periodically, which is why I'm posting.
Any ideas how to fix this? I'm not sure what other info you might need to help me, just let me know and I will try to provide it. Thanks!
Hey I haven't searched or anything but just opened the forum up and came upon your post.
I get the exact same thing - only started happening a week or so ago. I use GoodLink most of the time but I still sync with my Exchange server because I like the Pocket Outlook calendar better.
Weird that this is all of a sudden and intermittent !!!!!!!
I have never had this before and I have had the Kaiser for about 6 weeks or longer.
Are we REALLY the only two out there experiencing this problem - how lucky we are !!
Anyone have any suggestions on where else to look to try to troubleshoot this weird issue?
Yeah, I'm still wondering. It still seems to happen once every day or two.
Very annoying to always have to make sure to open up active sync and check to make sure it hasn't crapped out.
It would be nice to know I could always just trust that it's working correctly.
You can add a third person now. exact same issue. Looking for an answer.
Make that a fourth person.
I'm using Activesync to sync with an Exchange 2003 SP2 box. Everything runs fine - mail is pushed to my device, along with contacts, calendar and task items. After about 24 hours, I get an Activesync error 0x85010004.
I am using a certificate from "Certificates for Exchange". Link
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Take a look at the link below. The suggested solution was posted from Jun/07.
Cliffnotes : In this scenario, it was happening to ALL Activesync users on the Exchange 2003 server at periodic times. Apparently Activesync was sending responses to a diff IP/virtual server. He was able to resolve it by setting the exchange box to only have one IP.
http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?pageindex=1&siteid=17&postid=1075005&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=1
Thanks for the link. I read through it a few weeks ago in my quest to solve this problem.
In my case, my Exchange box only has, (and has only ever had), one IP address so this solution wouldn't apply.

Problems with BBC on the Tilt

Hi everybody,
I'm really struggling with the BBC for the Tilt. I would MUCH rather use ActiveSync, but it's against company policy so I'm SOL on that. I'm forced to either buy a Blackberry and give up my Tilt or install BBC. I chose the later.
I've been having problems with it ever since and I've had trouble finding resources to help out (mainly because most people don't use BBC on Tilt).
Here are the problems:
1. BBC often will randomly say "suspended by user" (even though I haven't), which prevents me from getting new messages, and unless I'm always looking to see if the service is running, I'll never know if I'm not getting email or if it suspended itself
2. BBC will just as often randomly say, "blocked - radio in use".
3. I can't get any integration going with the calendar at all. And when I receive calendar/meeting requests, it comes to the Tilt as email messages, not as meeting requests, so I can't accept them and add it to my calendar
Now, the limited amount of information I was able to find suggests that problem #2 may have something to do with interference with ActiveSync. I've tried the technique where I add a fake server source then make the schedule manual, but ActiveSync still won't go away permanently. I use it to access my Tilt files through Windows, so I can't uninstall it altogether. Also, when I tried to uninstall it before, it deleted all of my non-SIM contacts from the Tilt along with it, because all of my contacts were imported from Outlook.
Anybody have any ideas or solutions?
I think these are common issues, especially if you are using the Tilt on AT&T.
1) I'll go days without losing connection to blackberry services then it seems like it will lose it every night for 2 or 3 days. It may be related to activesync or it may be related to network issues. I always check the blackberry icon. If there's a "!" there, I know I need to reconnect.
2) At least with AT&T, you can only have one active data connection. Either it's the blackberry service or it's something else. The something else is active and keeping the blackberry service from connecting.
3) Check your pim options screen and make sure the calendar box is checked. If I remember correctly, when I first installed it was not checked by default. Contacts, tasks and notes are also configured in this screen.
You may have a point about activesync. I always kill it when I can but it auto starts. If I understand correctly, it is checking or setting the network time?

Yeah, that's what I usually have to do, but I hate that I have to do it - it defeats the purpose of push email if you have to always check to see if it's still pushing, lol.
People have recommended uninstalling ActiveSync when using BBC, but I can't possibly see how that's practical because I use ActiveSync to maintain my contacts and to add music and files to my Tilt. Is there some other way of doing this without using ActiveSync?

That's what I've read. But there have been times when I've done a Stop All on all services, and I still got a radio in use message. Strangely, there have been times when both ActiveSync and IE were running and I was able to get BBC running no problem. The inconsistency is maddening because it becomes impossible to isolate and cause and solve it.

Whatever is being maintained by ActiveSync (contacts) is greyed out on my Tilt, but everything else (calendar, notes and tasks) is checked, so I should be OK. But calendard items are still arriving in my inbox as regular email.

Interesting. I thought I was doing something wrong since people swear by that technique as a way to get ActiveSync to go away permanently. But it always comes back for me.
It says "radio in use" when Media.Net is active possibly through a IE or weather type program.
Some of the NEWER ROMS allow dual connections for BBConnect & Media.net. I saw a thread yesterday that showed the precise registry entry to make to allow this without burning a new ROM.
What thread was this? And when you say "newer ROMS" are you referring to official ROMs like the one on the HTC website or the XDA ROMs?
Demigawd,
Make sure the wireless calendar service (cical) is running properly. What version of bbc are you running? I'm running 4.0.0.97. It's behavior is a bit different than previous versions. It seems to block other data connections instead of bb getting blocked.
The only other suggestion I have is to remove and reinstall bbc. I would also have bes sync everything including contacts until you are sure calendaring is running correctly. If it's still not working correctly, maybe check your bes for a non-standard it policy.
I think the registry entry for multiple data apns is volatile and gets overwritten after every soft reset. A custom rom is probably the only way around that.

ActiveSync (Direct Push) randomly disconnects

Hi there,
I'm using my own 6.5 (custom) Rom (Build 23004). I use an hosted exchange
server for Direct Push. Syncing is working well without any errors. But sometimes
it just looses the connection and Active Sync tells me: "Last synchronized: ...".
Then i hit Synchronize and it stays connected for some time again.
This happens to me since a long time, I can't remember if this happened to me
using 6.1 Builds. But as far as I know I didn't get this issue using the stock Rom.
This issue is really annoying as WiMo doesn't even notify me about loosing the
connection, and then even "check email every X minutes works better.
Does anyone know a solution? I don't like to get back the "ugly" stock Rom.
P.S: I read some guys using a Tilt had this issue as well, if not using the AT&T
stock Rom, but the HTC one.
Edit: In the Attachment is the Active Sync log. Disconnect was at 10:35. Don't know if this helps.

For some time now I use 6.5 ROMs together with hosted Exchange and the problem you discribe hasn't occured to me once (been using 6.5 builds for about 3 months now).
Have you contacted your hosting provider? Maybe it's a setting in Exchange that causes the disconnect.
Not yet, I didn't think it was related to them. I'll write them a mail tomorrow, too late right now. A good input.
At least I know right now the problem isn't related to wm6.5 custom Roms.
Thanks for your answer.
Alright, I'm getting closer now.
Just taping "Synchronize" doesn't reestablish the connection. The last time the
error was probably related to bad signal (more later).
Yesterday evening the connection was lost again. It happened at 20:40. I
noticed it at about eleven o'clock and see there was no data connection. I
told active sync to synchronize, but it took twice until it finally established a
data connection. Syncing didn't work either. So I tried to access the web using
Opera, but no page was loaded, it just showed me the white screen, no error
message.
So, I turned the Phone on and off in Comm Manger, then it was working again.
I checked the log and it gave this line:
#2009-07-18 21:02:26.0000 AutdPing Ping received. HR = 85020003
At 21:02, there was the first sync attemp after the sync at 20:40.
The error code 85020003 tells me there is something wrong with the data
connection (conn mgr).
In Active Sync I get the error code 0x80072efd which is also related to
network problems.
So the problem is more complex I originally thought.
I'm really confused right now. Please, somebody got an advice?
Googled a bit trying to figure out what the error code means, some state you need to uncheck the proxyserver checkbox in your advanced connection settings. Others say uncheck the use SSL connection in your activesync settings. But none seem to be a conclusive solutions for everyone, so you can a least try.
Will try to find more....
gl
Thanks for your commitment Lokatho.
I've been searching a lot, but didn't find anything that seems to be related to my problem.
I think this behaviour isn't related to Active Sync actually. It rather seems to be a
problem with the connection. All articles I found only describe errors coming from Active
Sync itself.
The weired thing is that toggling the Data Connection on/off doesn't help. My device
won't connect to the Internet any more (using 3G/GPRS). Only disabling and reenabling
the phone makes it work again. The error only appears after hours of usage up to a day
or more.
Seems like I need to return to stock rom for further investigation soon.
PS: Didn't contact my hosting provider as I'm moving to a better (cheaper, more storage, exchange 2007 instead of 2003) one right now, let's see.
Alright, I think I found the solution. I disabled HSDPA/HSUPA as my phone
only wanted to connect to my carrier data connection if this option was unused.
Now I turned it on again, my data connection was still working, and the issue
seems to be gone! Now I have to wait further (working for 2 days now). I'm
really happy now it's gone. Remember this if your running into strange
problems with your data connection

Email Syncing WIFI

Hi has anybody else got this problem, my HTC one only syncs email when Im connected via WIFI, when out on road i do not receive emails but soon as i get back to office or home I receive all of them, this never happened with my One XL have i set something wrong?
same problem
I dont use wifi a lot so I've not replicated your issue yet (at least the wifi part)
I do, however, know that my phone does NOT automatically "push" the new e-mails when on data. The e-mail software waits for me to turn it on which in turn 'forces' an update.
Any help on this matter would be great.
Thanks.
EDIT:
I have just tried turning on wifi, and e-mail still does not push. When I open the app, it then syncs.
