Run/Bike app? - HTC Aria Themes and Apps

I've tried just about every reasonably rated run/bike app on my Aria (Endomondo and RunKeeper seem to be the best) and always have the same problem.
I start them before a run/ride, but shortly after I begin, my screen turns off and the app seems to close. It actually is still running (when I press and hold the Home button, the app appears), but when I reopen it, my current run/ride has terminated.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to keep the app going when my screen turns off?
Thanks in advance.

i use runkeeper and dont ever have that problem, the screen normally stays on the entire time unless i manually lock it or change screens
i dont even know how to change the settings to make it do anything different

I also use runkeeper without any problems (running Liberated Beta 5). I start the application/activity, lock the screen, and it runs without fail either in the background or as the primary running application.
Are you using some kind of automated task killer or battery saving application? That is the only thing I can think of that would explain the closing of the app when your screen shuts off.

your old thread is still here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742912&highlight=endomondo
did you try the app fix i mentioned?

I never saw your trackboost suggestion. I did a search on the Market and it couldn't find it. Can you send me a link to it?

I don't use a lockscreen. I just turn off the screen with the power button.
Not aware of using any task killer or battery saving app. In my task manager, it is still running.

thanks for the reply. Yes i actually do that with a lot of apps pretty regularly.
I also just pressed Maps and it went through the initial page like its the first time to press it ever or after an update. It doesnt happen every time with this app but sometimes. Again its not a big problem just kind of curious...Im going to keep track of all of the apps this happens with, maybe its native apps only, not that that would necessarily mean anything to me. Oh well, i forgot to mention i have the test froyo so in all probability its just a temporary issue until the official 2.2 is released.
I'm alos using Froyo and i don't have this issiue. do you maybe have a app that clears everything, like cache?
What i noticed in Froyo you can clear everything, if you do this the app acts like a fresh start. I had this with browser, lost all my bookmarks. Luckily i had a backup with titanium.
I don't have an app like that afaik but it sounds like it could be the cause so I'm going to go ahead and check my apps again. Thanks
If you are running an app like Advanced Task Killer or any other task killer app, you need to make sure Maps and Market are on the exclude list. From what it sounds like, you have it set to kill apps whenever you turn the screen off. So when you click on Market, it asks you to accept. Try this. Go into Market. Hit Accept. Click the home button, then click back on market. Does it prompt again?

So i tried what you said and when i immediately reentered the market i didnt get the terms and conditions page. Ive accessed the market 4 times today and ive had to accept terms twice.
However i stopped using a task killer a month or two ago. Could it be some app interfering?
Also, I have one nexus one that i use just to charge a battery so i exchange batteries usually at least once each day, i wonder if that could reset it? Except Maps has worked fine all day and i have to go through the initial info screen in that app every now and again. strange...
One last thing. When i use Flikie HD wallpapers, about evry third time i use it it freezes my phone and i have to pull the battery, but im not exactly sure when i installed that app and i believe the market/maos and other apps issue began prior to installing it, but possibly not. A lot of factors in play here

Google maps always running in background since GB/Maps update

Ever since the gingerbread update and new Google maps version, my nexus one "gps" icon in the notification bar has been popping up throughout the day. So I began checking under "running services" and now Google Maps is constantly running, I am 100% positive this was not the case before because I checked it repeatedly throughout the day while monitoring battery life like an OCD patient.
Does anyone know the reasoning behind this?
try signing out Google Latitude and see if the problem persist.
I've noticed it since they updated to Maps 5.1. Its definitely related to Latitude. If signing out doesn't solve your issue, I have an apk for Maps 5.0 that you can use. I rolled back when 5.1 first came out. I'm gonna see how much 5.2 caused maps to stay running.
How do I sign out of latitude? I have never used this service.
If you have never used this service, then you don't need to sign out. Under Google Maps option do you see "Latitude" or "Join Latitude"? If it is the latter, then you don't have to sign out anything. If you see "Latitude", click that and go to your Latitude privacy settings to sign out.

Check again, it's a GB feature.
Settings>Applications>Developement>Stop app via long press
Anyhow I always use back button to exit out of any "GPS" related applications
That option is NOT in my applications>development folder either, check your info.
That said, what I am looking for is a way to disable latitude/google maps from constantly restarting itself in the background and staying on and now using 2-5% of my battery everyday even though I am not using the program. I know how to kill it under running services but it always restarts now.

That 'Stop app via long press' is actually a CM feature, not Gingerbread. It was introduced with CM6, which predates GB.

I figured as much. It seems enabling that could cause problems. How well does it play with apps like Browser which have their own action defined for long press on back?
My bad, though it was a GB feature since it was not under CM settings
Do you have any other apps or Widgets that use the GPS while updating? Like a weather widget or something?

I have the same issue - never used Latitude, Long-press to kill Maps and still when I go into Applications/Manage Applications/Running - Maps is still there!? Even tho it doesn't appear in my Advanced Task Killer app?
There should be a way to exit this app properly?! I use it from time to time and going deep into menus is no good.
Froyo with CM6 here...
bump for an old thread, same issue with my gsm RAZR running 2.3.5 stock. i have signed out of latitude, it always restarts!

[Q] Disappearing launcher problem + maps problem

Hi,
I'm using stock 2.3.3 w/ stock launcher, build GRI40. Occasionally, when I press home, I see my live wallpaper but no launcher. I either have to sit for a while until launcher reappears or reboot the phone (or kill the launcher app if System is in app history). Does anyone else have this problem?
Another problem I have is with Maps. Sometimes when searching, the soft keyboard doesn't show up but if I tap where the keys would be, it registers the press as if the kb is there.
And sometimes when going into the details for a point in the map and bringing up the context menu for more options, the screen darkens as if the dialog is there but no dialog is shown. Again, when I tap the screen, it registers the presses as if the dialog is there. I'm using HTC IME mod for N1. Killing the map app doesn't help, only a reboot seems to solve it.
Anyone else having these issues?
Are any of these apps installed on your SD? That would be the obvious fix...

No, all on the internal memory. This is stock Android so stock apps can't be moved to the sd card.
When you update from the Market, the update is placed in /data/app, not system/app, so it's possible your Maps is in data. I know that was a source of Maps problems for me, which I resolved by moving it back to system. If you're not rooted, you don't have that option through... Tricky... :-/

I know that I've been having problems with the new keyboard, wont show up, wont show key press popups, crashes completely. Maybe it's something I'm doing... I think it's something system wide that just effects the keyboard workings.
I don't know. but you're not the only one with key board issues. =)

I've started having a strange problem with HTC IME Mod. I type stuff and it never draws the suggestions although the suggestions are actually there - moving the Dpad left/right shows the text being replaced in the input box with the suggestion.
This is starting to look like a GB issue tbh, I never had any of these problems in Froyo. All my stuff is stock.

I saw this problem once, about 24 hours after installing 2.3.3. I was also experiencing severe battery drain. The battery monitor showed "Android OS" using most the battery. I found references to setting the Wi-Fi sleep policy to "Never" to correct this. Sure enough, the battery life has been fine and "Android OS" no longer uses much battery.
It may be coincidental, but since doing this, I haven't had the empty home screen problem and my phone has been up for over a week. You might give this a try if you haven't already and see if it helps.

[Q] Market Notifications

Do Market notifications work for anyone? Or is it a known Android issue? Never worked for me and I'm on wifi/cell towers about 50/50.
Does it work in 2.3? I've never seen it work on 2.1 or 2.2. I've only seen it pop up in the notification area when manually checking/downloading an update. (thanks Google! -eye roll-)
Rarely it will pop up for me when I open the market and don't go to my apps. But almost every time its popped up for me was because I went to my apps.
I was really hoping Androids implementation of this would be better than iOS. Especially when froyo let you update all or enable auto update. In reality I think iOS is better (in this one tiny area), because if you open the app store you instantly see updates are available. But in android if you don't go to my apps sometimes it will take several minutes of browsing the market before you are notified.
Sent from my Captivate running GR-12
I rarely get any Market notifications unless I'm at My Apps in the Market app and let it sit there for a while. It'd be pretty nice if I got notified to update my apps before I go into the Market though, I agree.

Thats the thing....they way the market was sold....so to speak....is that you would get a notification, whenever any app you have installed has an update. Seems most everyone gets that notification after they manually check. Thats what happens with me.
Could it be because you're shutting down the market app? I know that's what happens with all my other apps that have notifications. You only receive them if you don't "close" the app, but instead leave it running in the background.

That can't be it because Android judges on it's own what should be shut down based on the memory it needs I think. In other words, I never closed it.
These guys found a way to kick start it a while back, but I can't find the files to do the same for us.

I think Demonic240's referring to the difference between exiting any app (i.e. Market) using the back button until reaching Home versus 1 clicking away to home or another app. The difference is measurable in Task Manager. Method two: Market still runs. Method one: Market closed.

Gotcha. Regardless, I don't see any point in having update Notifications if it requires you to keep the Market app running constantly. I assumed Google had it connected to one of the basic Android services that always run in the background.
In the link in my last post, they talk about a value in a settings.db that triggers a CheckinService. Stuff that I can't find on our phones.
It's an interesting question. I got notifications regularly in 2.1 and can't recall when I got one in 2.2. I kept background data enabled under both.
Checking Manage Applications, Market Updater 1.0 only shows up when viewing All, and appears to be a dead service even when Market is running. I never checked it under 2.1 because it appeared to work.
Mine has never worked...only when I open the market does it decide to tell me I have a update!
Do you mean popup in notification bar or is there actually a popup that comes up. I only see notification never saw a popup.

Prevent apps like Facebook from automatically running

I'be had fairly poor battery performance. When i went into running services i saw that quite a few were running that i didn't start up myself. Like Facebook. Tripit, hootsuite. I've made sure that notifications have been turned off but these apps are still loading up. Any way of making sure they don't load unless i manually load them?

I've been using watchdog. It lets me know when an app is running in the background and lets me kill it. If there's an automatic solution, I'd like to know about it too.

Agreed, task killers... kill batteries.
Honestly, having it run in the background doesn't kill your battery. Its the syncing. I'm assuming you are NOT rooted? If so, then there are a number of apps to help you, primarily Titanium Backup so you can FREEZE the app.
If you want to have a quick free fix, go under accounts, and turn off sync for those apps. Saves battery life like you wouldn't believe.
There's also an app called "LTE Switch" that brings you to the LTE Menu so you can switch to CDMA (Also a HUGE battery saver)
Good luck!
I am rooted and running UNL3ASH3D V2.0. And yes I understand it's the syncing that kills the battery. I've turned off syncing on these apps but they're still loading which makes me think they are still using at least some battery. None of these programs (like Facebook) are listed in Accounts.

None are showing under Accounts? Hmm, thats odd. Usually, when you first get your phone, it asks to set these up. What all apps start up upon reboot? And you are NOT rooted, correct? I'll do some research
I'm not using the Social Networking app. Standalone versions of Facebook, Hoot Suite, etc.
What I'm using is a program that is a part of my file explorer, ES Task Manager. Instead of KILLING the apps, I can force them at startup to not run. So I stopped Gun Bros and Contract Killer from running at startup because they had these annoying notifications they would send me about buying in-game stuff and really didn't need to be run at all. And I couldn't find a way to turn them off lol, so this works out well for me. If you don't want something running at startup, you can do it this way, and it could potentially help battery life because it would only run when you tell it to. And you need root access to do this.
Great suggestion

Look for program called "Startup Manager" in market - works great!
hello...i used a auto start manager, works great..but i also want that when i close facebook from recent app that it kills the process...in rom tools task manager i see that facebook is a hidden app (like whatsapp) so the built-in task manager doesn't kill it when i close the app..any ideas how to make the facebook app "visible" so that the task manager auto kills it like other apps and games?
