[Q] Android alternatives on Hero? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just curious if anyone had done any work to get stuff like Angstrom, Mer, or OpenMoko working on the Hero. I love Android but I enjoy tinkering with other platforms too.

CM6/Froyo + Sense UI (Development & Funding)

To all:
I am very interested in getting balls deep into the development/"porting" of the Sense UI to CM6 or a vanilla 2.2 kernel for the Moto Droid. I realize that none of the Sense UI based official source is available at this time - but it will be. I am willing to invest time and money into this effort. I think it will be a great learning experience too. Please let me know if you're interested and what your current skillset is.
My android experience is limited to compiling kernels and medicore java development. I've been doing *nix development for ~5 years now and would like transition deeper into the android (low level) development world.
Thanks.
sounds great i am a huge fan of zusedroid and 2.2 i swich between the to all the time and seeing that someone is willing to work on it is great because i saw the zd team slowly fall apart or as it seems i think they just gave up on it or somthing or they all just got a droid x but great news i would be willing to healp but i dont know what i would have to offer o well i think u should port frome the droid incredible because it is gsm and not cdma like the diser or the nexusthiss one should be hard but easyer than what zd had to put wp with
id love to see this go into a full port. i've been using the zeusdroid for now, the drawbacks suck but i love the htc sense so i put up with the flaws.
helping financially is tough as i am a full time student, however i am upon my last year of electrical engineering, but no major programing or developing experience however if there's something i can tackle i'll be happy to try

It boots up fully to sense ui but it's not fully functional yet.
i would LOVE a completely working 2.2 sense rom for the droid. i think the droid incredible would definitely be the thing to work with to make it happen. I cant help do it, but i will definitely donate a ton AFTER a completely working rom is made, and i think a lot of other people would too.
maybe you could recruit someone from the original zeusdroid team.
please please make this work, that would be amazing. good luck, and donations would come, if its completed
Just a bit of random knowledge - CM is an EXCELLENT rom, as a project of its own. It is built from source and heavily modified. With great power, comes great responsibility. It can be further modified, but is in no way a good start point for porting a pre-built rom. I am speaking from experience in saying that it is a VERY customized build. You are FAR better starting with sense, and a stock rom to splice in. I made the mistake of thinking I could use a CM build as a start when porting sense to the mytouch. 3 Migraines later, I realized what the issue was, and while parts of CM could be ported to sense, sense was not being ported to CM.
Example - Take the stock 84B Boot image and slap it on any rom and you will see that all of them function except CM. The boot and system are built together, which is efficient when it is released as a complete package, but again, not good for using as a start to any hack and slash project.
That said, the best option is to get parts from Zeusdroid Alpha, parts from Milestone MotoSense, and have a chat with barak and eugene about how they ported the original Milestone firmware to Droid, and combine this knowledge

[Think Tank] Getting HTC Sense on the Vibrant

Hey, I'm starting a think tank to see if we can get an HTC Sense port started for the Vibrant.
This would be very hard to do, considering the lack of drivers and such, but it might be possible.
considering how long it took and they still never could get it to work on the original droid....highly doubtful
I love it when people create think tanks but contribute nothing....it's just a hey, wouldn't it be cool if we do this? and belongs in General Chat
actually there was a succesful port to the droid but you are right there are multiple threads about sense and the chances of it happening are very slim. devs do what THEY want to do not what other people do.

thought it was still really really buggy?
yeah let's think tank about what an atrocity it would be to bring that abomination over...
G1 was probably the most developed phone... and there were about 100 threads shooting down Sense on the G1... it requires so much work... that its pretty pointless.. especially concidering a good amount of the widgets have been recreated... etc etc
What about it requires so much work? As a person with no programming experience what so ever, I have trouble understanding why what seems like mostly a different interface has so much trouble running on hardware that is clearly powerful enough to run it.
Just an honest question.

you need to port the entire senseui framework over, not just the widgets
For starters most of the phones that Sense has been ported to are HTC phones that come with out it, there are exceptions though, HTC, makes Sense so stands to reason it would be easier to port to an HTC phone, as the tools support them.
Second, unlike porting Opensource items and OS's to other phones, HTC Sense is proprietary and licensed only for HTC phones, so it is not a grey area of porting, it is just illegal to port it.
The Sense UI is more than just a "Home Replacement" like ADW , Launcher Pro and even TouchWiz, it really ties in a lot deeper with the OS.
good going to de-rail the noob...
i use launcher pro plus and a scene dock its not the same but close enough since lp pro widgets are close to sense widgets it works ok
Not to mention having to build a kernel that supports sense

I Moved from Android And Love WP7 Personally, But You should look at the features that you need and use in android and find out if they are present in WP7.
Personally I know you'll have a shock when you notice how 2 phones with the same processors act differently, WP7 seems to really utilise the processor for speed, I sat in an o2 store using both models and within 10 minutes I knew I wanted the HD7.. It just felt more fluid and I like the way that it seamlessly integrates everything
WP7 is very pleasing to the eye and personally I Like it, but if you're gonna miss the features in Android i'd suggest don't move.
If you update to the developer build of mango you would get to see the shocking speeds of that too, it seems to make the phone even faster, and not by just a little bit, by a heck of a lot!
The apps are pricey however, one of the setbacks of the Xbox live system and the fairly new operating system sadly.
These are my opinions on the phones, but personally you might think differently
Thank you for your input; I've was always into WinMo and moved over to Andriod.
Didn't give WP7 a shot yet, though I must admit that it seems to be more faster and fluid than andriod. The applications are my concern..but I do need a change
let's see if anyone else would like to share their experience...
EDIT: does WP7 support VOIP/SIP?? That would be a deal breaker for me.
Thanks.
Hi,
Android graphically resembles a little win 6th. It has great potential but they really are useful for small percent of people. WP7 is a new OS, still far from perfect, but moving in the right direction. It is good that Nokia will work. This will force the great progress and I think at the end of the year we will already have a good system.
Personally I have HTC HD7 and HTC IS and I am not going to get rid HD7.
Regards

Is anyone else excited about the thought of Ubuntu for Bionic?

I keep thinking, we'll have convergence on the Bionic. On stock, it already had convergence, but with hardware acceleration and a stable build, we could get performance similar to that of a Chromebook in a Phone. In addition, we can dual boot, so we have Android AND Ubuntu. Is anyone else excited about it, or is it just me who's a fan of convergence?
Convergence could be very cool
I would love to see Ubuntu on any phone. The Ubuntu Edge idea looks awesome, but I think having the ability to use my Android phone and then run Ubuntu by connecting to a tv or monitor would make my phone even more useful.
Someone smarter than me should make it happen!

Gingerbread on the Bionic did this, with webtop (2.0?). The original/stock build was quite clunky and slow, but a very cool idea. Some people even stripped the build down, added in the rest of the arm build of Ubuntu, set up swap partitions, and ended up with amazing and ideal setups.
I would love to see this idea come back around in android devices. Alas, chroot with vnc is the closest to that dream at the moment.

Android Go on G1?

Hi all,
Just wondering if it would be possible to install Android Go on the TMobile G1 just for the fun of it. I still have the phone in a perfectly working condition and brings back a lot of memories as you can imagine.
Thanks,
-Gus
the dream has armv6, lollipop and up don't support it.
