I just pick up a second hand Galaxy S I9000M from a guy. after I get home i realize the power button short press not doing anything (i expect it should turn the screen off), long press power button does restart the phone. also as soon as phone in idle mode, it start a samsung promotion video (which i see in demo unit show on store (like best buy)).
I hope i am not getting a faulty or demo unit from this purchase. any input would be appreciated

Well, I don't actually want a power button to be honest, I want the power button action changed. I've lost count of the amount of times I have switched the phone off to go to bed and then accidentally touched the power button causing the phone to restart. Then I have to wait until it's booted-up before I can switch it off again. OK, I know I shouldn't drink so much that I become ham-fisted but in my defence, that brings its own - entirely unrelated - benefits.
What I want (knew I'd get there eventually) is to have to press the power button for like one second before the phone powers-up. I'm happy switching the screen on and off with a single short press, but if it already takes a long-press to switch it off, why can't it be a long press to switch it on? How hard can it be?
here you go: http://www.fuzemobility.com/?p=1751
This will remap your power button on a long press and show you how to poweroff without it (see the comments there for the app)
I'm sorry but I don't think this is what I'm looking for.
Visualise: The phone is off (not the screen, the PHONE), properly switched off. I want to have to press the power button for at least one second to start the phone up. From what I was reading on your link, the button presses are only recognised when the phone is already powered-up.
You don't want the button to switch the screen off too? Otherwise I don't get it.

Don't think that's possible. Btw, you could always shutdown the phone by taking out the battery No need to wait for it to boot.
Ive discovered this by accident but while the phone is in standby modus and and the screen is locked, when you press the powerbutton for ~5sec the phone reboots.
In my opinion the "reboot" function mapped to the power button should only be working when the phone is screen unlocked.
Is this a samsung or android thingy?
what do you mean by stand by mode ? when screen is off and not being used ? this doesnt happen on my device...
just dont press the power button for 5 seconds and hey presto !!! job done lol
isn' tthis good feature?
It may help a little when
a. not able to 'wake-up' a sleeping phone
b. upon waking-up , force close message keeps on appearing
In b, i have to take out battery and when using my case-mate barely there cover, it's inconvenient to pry it open.
oops.. I didn't answer your actual question.
Sorry, dunno if this is Samsung thingie or Android thingie. But I can "reproduce" the effect on my phone.
It's not reboot though - it goes to "switch off" mode

mine comes up with a message to shut down the phone or enter flight mode or silent mode or data network mode if you hold down the power button for 5 secs in stand by mode.
If your not getting that message first its possible that your firmware is faulty or if its not a stock firmware it may have not been added correctly.
same here i get message.. stock jpy with speedmod kernel
No i meant like for example you put the phone in your pocket like you normally do and the powerbutton gets pressed for ~5sec while your bent down or another position the button gets pressed it would reboot. Im not really happy with that happening would you.
Im on stock js3 onlything i mod was putting the voodoo kernel on it.
Its a good thing
You'll be happy when the phone freezes and you don't need to take it apart to reboot it (pull battery)... Its just like a power button on a PC, if you hold it long enough it shuts the device down. I've never done it by accident though. Just get a $.99 plastic case and your problem will be gone but you'll still have the feature.

I have a Captivate with bricked power button. I disassembled the phone, tried to press the pushbutton soldered to the PCB, but the phone won't recognize the 'click'. Updating to teamhacksung build 12 doesn't help either. So, I re-assigned the power button to the Search capacitive button.
However, one problem lingers. If I long-press the Search button, it will bring up the "Power Off" option normally appears when you long-press the normal power button. I don't want to turn off my phone as it may not turn on again now that the power button is bricked (currently, phone immediately turns on after I re-insert battery). Is there a way to remove this "Power Off" option?
Thanks
First of all, I suggest you immediately remove your search button as your power button. If your phone turns off, which you say your on ICS build 12 (which is still pre-beta software... aka - unstable) it is very likely your phone will turn off one day, and you're screwed. I suggest you take your phone to an att store and see if you can get an exchange. Use a hardware button as your power button, i.e. your volume keys
Hi Guys,
I have a frustrating situation whereby my Galaxy Note powers on but the screen appears to be in permanent sleep mode - I get nothing but black on the screen.
You can here the Samsung chime as the phone powers up, I can adjust the volume button and hear audible tones. I can also call the mobile from another phone so the underlying phone/OS is working fine.
I can also connect the device via Kies USB and copy images/music with no issues.
I have tried removing the battery and replacing, I have also tried giving the device a full charge however I still get nothing on the screen.
Does anyone know if it's possible to perform some kind of hardware reset to get the screen to power back on? If not I guess i'll need to return the unit
p.s. Stock Galaxy Note
Thanks v much
Jeremy
Same problem for me , i have test many ROM and kernel but i still get the black screen. it's generally when i haven't use my phone during a couple hours.
Same issue here. The screen remains black and not responsive to front button or power button. I still am able to hear notifications (e.g. calendar reminders, plug in power, etc.).
Long press of power button to reboot is the only solution I have found in order to clear.
First occurrence yesterday after owning note for 1 month.
Second occurrence today.
Stock device. No root. KL7.
No newly installed apps prior to first occurrence. I will cross-check to see if any apps updated yesterday.
I have also disabled Green Power.
guys i have been owning note since past 45 days
and suddenly i faced the same problem today

Hi all.

Are all Samsung power buttons the same? The internal white one that is soldered to the board, not the button you actually touch. If they aren't all the same, are any of them the same as the n7000? Mine keeps messing up on me and restarting or bringing up the shutdown screen, and I can't find a place that officially has a n7000 power button and ships internationally to Chile, which is where I currently am.
My N7000 also started showing this behavior. I've reduced the display off timer so i don't have to push the power button all the time to get the screen off.. Are you sure that it is the button misbehaving? Maybe applying some air spray thingy would help. Haven't tried yet.
