[Q] Wi-fi management - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a couple of questions dealing with wifi on the Captivate.
1) Is there a better way or maybe an app that will manage wifi connections better than what android does? I use my phone at work but we have to have static IP's. So every morning when I get in I have to go through all the menu levels to get to advanced wifi settings and then turn on static IP's. It saves the last settings, so thats decent. But when I go home (I also use static IP's on my home network) I have to go through and change the settings for my home network. And then when I'm out in public and use a public network I have to go back through and turn off static IP's. Its really F'ing annoying having to do this every single day. With the iphone all you have to do is set it once for each SSID and it remembers those settings for good. There's got to be a better more common sense approach to this.
2) What is the max connection speed you guys are seeing over wifi? I have an N router at home and even when I'm like 3 feet away it only connects at around 72Mbps. I realize this is pretty decent speed, but isnt N supposed to go up to 300Mbps? My Apple Mac Mini connects at much faster and its on the other side of the house.
Thanks!

maybe there's an app out there than can manage wifi profiles.. I'm not so sure about that..
although in regards with your Wireless-N router.. are you broadcasting in 2.5Mhz or 5.0Mhz? because 300Mbps can only happen if you're running in 5.0Mhz to my knowledge..

Does the captivate suport N at 5GHz? I havent seen anywhere that discusses it, but I know that a lot of phones only support 2.4GHz.
I'm going to be buying a new router next week and would be interested to find out.
Also, I was wondering, how you measure the throughput from your phone to your router?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Well, launcher pro has a new feature that you can make shortcuts to the specific settings i.e. apn settings or battery status. I'll do a quick search on app brain to look for one...hold on plz
EDIT: How about this one: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.farproc.wifi.statIc

Just to let you guys know.. N routers tbh aren't necessarily needed unless you do alot of transferring files from one computer to another.. that is where the speed really kicks off..
You will need a really fast internet connection to put that 300Mbps to good use
an old WRT54G Wireless G router that does 56Mbps will be just as good as an N router with 300Mbps if your internet connection speed is only 15Mbps.. (that's mine and I have Time Warner road runner)
As to what the Captivate runs on whether is 2.4 or 5.. lol I'm not sure.. sorry

Yeah I don't understand why people care if it can have the full effect of the router. Honestly it's a phone not a computer so it wont benefit at all from it.

Finding myself curious how to setup auto to static and static to auto.. i found 'Wifi Static' I have yet to test it D: .. but I'm hoping it's what you're looking for..
gl!
btw OP http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.kman.WifiManager
I saw that.. not sure how the program would benefit you but maybe it has it's own ip managing within the wifi networks :x .. search wifi in the market one of em has to suit you

[Q] Wi-Fi Woes

Ok I have a very iritating problem.
My captivate works amazing in all ways... except one. When I'm at home connected to Wifi, within a few mins of me putting the phone down, or even mid use, the wifi will just stop working. The icon still shows it to be connected however no apps are able to actually get internet. A quick pulldown of the quick access menu and tapping wifi off and back on again gets it going great... for another 5 mins. Then the same thing happens.
Its been like this ever since I got the phone, even after flashing different roms. Now i'm running a Linksys Wireless - N router - maybe they're not playing nice?
I dont think its a hardware fault because when I serve wifi, IE the captivate is an infrastructure mode access point for 3g, it stays on consistently and my laptop can tether for 2 hours or more.
Anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks
When you have wifi on, go to menu settings and 'Wireless and network'. In Wi-Fi settings you can change the Wi-Fi timeout.

Try goin to settings->wireless and networks-> wifi settings (menu key)advanced and set the sleeping policy to never
I've done that...
i *Think* i've fixed it. I was using WPA2 IPK encryption or whatever.. Switched back to the 64 bit crappy WEP. Wifi was on all night and all morning with no cut out.
Might be just another linksys-is-crap situation.
HI, I figured I keep my wifi woes within a singe thread so.
I have an old D Link WBS 2310 router.
I recently got a message from AT&T that I'm near my data limit. This surprised me as my last cycle I barely got near 500mb. Since my bill isn't ready yet, I can't see exactly what it is I'm doing to use so much data.
TO be safe I figured I'd pull out my old router and set it up. After hours of hassle getting it to work on my new computer, I wasn't able to get my Captivate to hook up to it.
My laptop works fine. It gets a fast wifi signal, but my phone just says "Obtaining IP address" for a while and then gives up.
My phone gets wifi at work, at friends', at coffee shops - but not at home.
I've tried this with no encryption, WEP encryption and WPA2 encryption.
Each time my laptop would hook up to the wifi but my phone wouldn't.
I searched some other forums and found similar problems with HTC phones.
Some answers say that D Link sucks. But that answer applies to other brands as well.
Do I need "n" wifi, rather than "g"?
I don't want to buy another router only to find it still doesn't work.
Any help?

part of the IEEE 802.11n standard is backward compatibility with all previous 802.11 standards IIRC, so there should be no need to buy a new n device.
HOWEVER, i am also having issues with my wi-fi and my g capable router. i will meddle around with some phone and router settings to see if i can fix this, this is one area were i can actually be of some use on this forum
Hi. It turned out the wifi was broken on my captivate. I reset it to stock and it's all better. It had been working up to the previous day so I assumed that it was still working. The router goes down intermittently in general, so I've ordered a new one to see what's up.
Hi, I'm back! So after resetting the phone and getting wifi to actually connect (rather than being stuck searching for IP address), I'm now having the exact same problem is the OP. The OP seems to have solved this by switching to WEP. I tried this and it doesn't work. My timeout is set to never. Also, it's the same at home (I replaced my router) as well as at Starbucks and a friends house.
I'm connected, but can't download or sync. It works initially and then stops, and then comes back in briefly and then stops, all the while "connected." Sometimes I can fix it temporarily by turning off wifi and then turning it back on.
SO what's the deal? Is it a hardware problem? Is there some secret magic code?
edit: Just disabled encryption - same problem.

[Q] Anyone still having wifi issues???

I have looked at every thread and forum possible for the past 2 months. My wifes nexus and my own connects to our home wifi for a few minutes then disconnects itself (weather the screen times out or not) and will not reconnect at all. I have tried the wifi fix apps on the market, changed the settings on my router numerous times, factory rest my router and phone, changed roms, and even routers but nothing seems to work. My wife's nexus is stock and not rooted so I have been using hers as a reference thinking it was maybe a rom I was using but she is having the same problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
sigep235
I had that problem but as soon as I got to 2.2.1 and/or used a newer Radio version, the problem disappeared...
Although, N1s are still very picky on routers...try with another router and check if it keeps the connection alive.
Also check your router settings to see if they're optimal (try having no password set and see if it keeps the connection...if it does then it might be a problem with the N1 not crypting information well or so)
You could also try updating the router's firmware.
Make sure your wifi policy is set to "Never" (go in wifi settings the press Menu and click on settings)
Last thing you could try is manually set an IP address + gateway + netmask in the wifi settings as well as setting your N1's mac address to that same IP address in the router...
If nothing works then, I'm completely out of solutions
I just got on to look at some of the settings with my router when I noticed that some times when my phone says I am connected to the wifi there is no IP address assigned to the phone. Under connected devices it says "android device" but with no ip address associated with it...
I still have the problem
I still have the problem. I have pretty much given up on it. I have heard that if you increase the minimum CPU speed a little, it will help. I'm not willing to do that as it will undoubtedly waste more battery.
I have changed the wifi sleep policy back to "when screen turns off", because having it on "never" would make the phone think it's connected..when it isn't..leading to hours of no email notifications and such. But I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for people who don't have a data plan or some other similar situation.
I'm thinking about getting a Wireless N router (I have a G right now) and seeing if that helps. But even if I was to get one, I don't have much money to spare so I'd probably get the cheapest N routers, around 30-50 dollars..and I don't know if those are any good...or if there really isn't any difference between the high priced and low priced ones.
I said this in another thread, but I'll say it here.
I tried all of the things everyone could suggest and none of them worked. When I heard Broadcom updated the driver and CyanogenMod put it into his nightlies, I bit the bullet, unlocked my bootloader and installed CM6 and it changed NOTHING. So I went out and bought a new router: Cisco E3000. It works great. So I guess it was a bad combination of phone and router. I had to spend hundreds of dollars. Really ****ing pissed me off. But I wasn't going to buy a cheaper router without dual channel wireless N.

Nexus has N connectivity but only on one band (2.4Ghz) and I don't think the technology matter (heck, I'm still on 802.11b ) it's really more of a phone/router combination problem...
I did actually test on my VERY CHEAP spare 802.11g router (DLink --> do not buy their products) and the connection did NOT stay...that was back when I was on stock FRG83 though...I should try again on Cyanogen but I'm wayyy too lazy ^^
btw, I really don't get why people always unlock when they wanna flash a rom....heck, keep your warranty!! there is an easy way of doing it without unlocking...meh
PS: I have a 50MB data plan (technically, I didn't buy a data plan, it came free) so I AM a heavy wifi user and it was such a pissoff to find out that my new Nexus One couldn't connect to Wifi and keep the connection alive...now I'm damn happy that it works after all that fiddling ^^
@sigep: try to assign a manual ip to your N1's mac addres...or update firmware, it definitely looks like a router problem...
The root without unlocking method wasn't too tested when I unlocked my bootloader.
I have made two swaps with no problems since.

Oh kay sorry then
Although all the new wikis and todos should emphasize on the locked bootloader methods to avoid voiding warranties...although I admit fastboot is always noobproof but I digress ^^
I've been testing several routers from different brands, and the only one that seems to work fine with mi Nexus One is the Linksys/Cisco WAG160N (802.11n, but 2.4 GHz only). However this one has other issues of its own, like not being able to connect to mapped ports after two days up and running (not even from the LAN). The N1 works fine, thought, it doesn't disconnect overnight.
I've also tried an SMC (SMC SMC7904WBRA-N, I think). This one is really bad, the router freezes after only two days of use, the lights freeze and it stops working altogether. I returned it after a week.
I'm currently using a Sitecom (300N WL-348). With this one the N1 WiFi is dropped over night, and the connection to this AP is disabled. I'm still testing if moving to a less crowded channel could fix that. I hope it does, since this router seems to have a more stable firmware that the Linksys/Cisco, same WiFi coverage (which is quite good), and even better WiFi performance. Not all is good, though, DSL performance is worse.
In the past I used Netgear routers. The firmware was stable as rock, but the hardware not so much and after a year of use they are very prone to failing. No idea if newer models are any better in this regard, they are impossible to find, so I don't think this has improved.
Since I have DSL at home, I'm looking at routers with DSL modem built in, so I don't have to have two devices (DSL modem and wireless router).
From my observarions - Nexus will disconnect from WiFi when the IP it has is lost and the network doesn't supply IP on time. After 1 or 2 IP assignment timeouts, it will skip the network and refuse to connect.
Every router I've connected to that supplied IP on time, even when revoked every X min, didn't cause disconnects.
Of course, WiFi on sleep set to "Never".
Success! Last night I updated the firmware of the Sitecom router, and changed the WiFi channels (it's set to use wide channel, so it uses two channels). This morning the N1 had still a solid WiFi connection and over night it updated all services just fine (weather, Facebook, email).
I've been using the Sitecom router since my last post with no issues. Then last friday arrived a small update that broke WiFi. On Saturday arrived the bigger update to Android 2.2.1 but the problem with WiFi remains. Before 2.2.1 Wifi has been working fine every day at home and work, now with 2.2.1 it's broken at home and work.
Are we moving forward? If Gingerbread doesn't fix this problem I'll have to do something about it: try cooked ROMs or even getting another phone . Currently my N1 keeps disabling my access points all the time.

[Q] Tethering n tomato + Batter calibration basics

Hi Guys,
So i thought of a couple questions today, after my first proper days use of my N1 (skinned it with BSE so I finally really used it)
If I have a PC, and a Tomato WRTGL router.. and, the PC doesn't have a Wifi card.
Can I tether my Tomato wifi router to my Nexus's ssid?
I mean, I know a wifi USB stick is 12dollars, but I'd like to avoid that.. and I know my ISPs signal cuts out from time to time (and don't want to be using my wifi netbook ...thats worth less than my n1 ..as I've come to realize post-purchase ..to get on the internet).
I figured, since you guys know about Linux and stuff, and possibly Tomato router firmware, it might be a worthy question to pose.
My second question is:
Is there a coles notes version of Battery calibration? I mean, do i just drain it and delete the Davlik cache and recharge?
I tried the HAVS kernel, and while it might be good and all - it does slow down my yuppie wants for live wallpaper and concomitant side scrolling home screen speeds.
After a full days use of GPS and battery reality, I would either opt for a well advised battery re-calibrations scheme or a recommendation just to use a car-dock, OR ..just get a second battery while asking HTC nicely?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Let me understand something. What is that you want to accomplish?
You want to use Nexus as WiFi adapter on your PC? Yes, if you connect USB to the PC, you can. Nexus tethers whatever connection it has, if it has internet from WiFi - it can tether that through USB.
You want to feed the router with Nexus WiFi? You can't, unless you reconfigure the router to be a WiFi repeater.
Cool Jack_R1 thanks for that insight!
I had no clue you could tether via USB. How do I do that?
Same place you activate the wifi hotspot.
I attempted this a while back when my internet went out but gave up cause i didnt want to break the wifi router to router link i had with my printer upstairs. im using dd-wrt firmware on a wrt54g router. its theoretically possible and if i had a g2 with tmo 4g speeds I would probably get rid of my att dsl and just use the phone for large transfers lol

Sweet. TY!
For the battery cal, there is a chip inside the battery. We just found out it has a built in learn cycle to re calibrate it. In addition we are experimenting by raising the voltage and current set points to maximize the capacity. The new changes in pershoots kernel let's you access the batt internal chip to pull all your values.

WIFI slow while cellular connection enabled

I did a search and only found one reference to this in a post. So dont flame on if I missed it.
I can connect to my network fine at home over the WiFi but if I leave the cellular connection on it is terribly slow. If I go into airplane mode and then turn on the WIFI separately its blazing fast. It appears the cellular wants to take priority over the WiFi. Has anyone else experienced this or found what causes it. Below are my phone specs and network.
HD7 with WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular enabled.
Netgear wireless N
I completely agree with this statement btw.
In my basement my "wifi" connection is HORRIBLY slow on my hd7. Many, and I repeat MANY times I feel as though i'm still using my 3G connection instead of the wifi as it should.
Just wanted to comment on this, i'll search later on, maybe i'll find something else.
just turn on cellular connection when you need it , and turn off when don't need.(when u have wifi nearby)
Thats what I do but it shouldn't work like that. There should be WiFi priority when available for data services.
If ur wifi signal is too weak , it can be so.

I have the same phone as you, from TMOUS, and I have noticed the same effect, cellular over-riding the wifi, and I think that the cellular is just set as the default... and I think that is the way it is intended, by the carrier(s), because then we would use our minutes/data up quicker then otherwise... I have noticed when using wifi, and not on airplane mode, that minutes/data are consumed at a MUCH quicker rate, than when on wifi w/airplane mode on... and thanks for pointing this out, I may not have payed as much attention otherwise... I am leaving TMOUS, maybe going to Simple Mobile, or something like that, and I will be keeping a much closer eye on it now... right now, with no carrier, I am using my phone strictly on wifi and it is pretty damn fast, and I only have an 802.11G router, not an 802.11N router like yours... which only makes me want an N router even worse... I'll post any more info as it appears, and thanks again!...
@ artmodeler At work I can understand a week signal but not at my house. I am about 10 feet away from the router which is located on my desk. Also the connection manager in the settings is showing full bars.
@ mlongue1 Yeah it works amazingly fast on my WiFi under airplane mode. I use Super Tube for my you tube client and theres little if any pausing to buffer large videos. Not so much when the cellular connection is enabled.

Wifi blows on 10.5

I gotta tell ya, id absolutely love this thing if it wasnt for wifi issues. This thing drops connection all the time and lags so bad its awful. Done everything I read to do, freezing or deleting apks. Think it would be a home run if it wasnt for the wifi.
I've had mine a few weeks and I've never seen it drop wifi.
Sent from my SM-T800 using XDA Free mobile app
Never had a problem with the wifi, but the lag is horrible
Did you messes with your kernel?
I've got an 8.4 but I'm assuming the WiFi hardware is the same??? I've had mine for several months and never dropped a connection (except when my router went down) . I use it mainly on a 2.4 Ghz network at work. In my office I'm on the other side of an elevator shaft from the access point so reception isn't good on any device in my particular location - but it works and even there never dropped a connection. At home I've got it on 5 Ghz and where I typically use it the signal is very strong. On speedtest.net it matches the speed of my desktop PC which is wired into the router....so it's getting all my internet connection has to offer (service level is 30 Mbps but speedtest.net usually shows 32 - 35).
I'm assuming you have already checked the obvious things like signal strength? Does it drop the connection in some locations but not others? Does it make a difference what router or access point you are connecting to? Interference from other WiFi networks or (if using 2.4 Ghz) other devices like cordless phones?
Try installing WiFi Analyzer (free in the play store). It will give you a real time chart of your signals strength for all access points it can detect on both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. For example in my Culdesac I can see at least 6 other access points with pretty strong signals (all my immediate neighbors). At my office, on the side of the building facing an appartment building on the opposite side of the street, I can see at least 25 2.4 Ghz access points. Amazing how many are named Xfinity WiFi or Linksys . On the other hand, on the 5 Ghz band in my home I only see one access point other than mine.
Try manually setting your router/Access point to a channel no one else is using. Switch to 5 Ghz if your router has it or buy a new router if it doesn't. This band is a lot less crowded, at least where I live. If your signal strength is low in the place you want to use the tablet, try moving closer to the router to see if that helps. If it does, consider moving the router or getting a second router or repeater.
I use to have problems in my home with 2 things.
A baby room monitor - REALLY tore up my wifi all over the house!
A set of wireless rear surround speakers was a problem for about a day. Lucky for me they have the ability to change the channel they use. Wipped out my freq counter, found out where they were and moved them to ch 11. Unit isn't marked as to what 3 channels you can select from. So the freq counter helped me find where they were and where I could put them. After I got them on ch11 I moved the router to ch4 as there was no one using it near by. Problem solved and have no wifi problems at all with the Sammy.... Matter of fact my router sits on a cabinet 6 feet off the floor. I get coverage over my whole .7 acre Ponderosa while listening to music riding the mower!
my wifi seems to drop once in a while too but i think its the crap router i use.. not sure
i also reset my tab and that helped.
Another thing I just thought of that you may want to check.....
Make sure no devices are fighting with each other trying to get the same address on your network. I just went through this last night. Once resolved, no problem.

A lot of this sort of problem can be fixed by going to 5 Ghz - which may mean a new router if you are using a router that isn't dual band. Most of those other devices in homes (and in your neighbor's homes too) are on 2.4 Ghz so there are a lot of things that compete for that spectrum that aren't even WiFi.
No WiFi issues here
No wifi issues here. I was on stock for about the 1st 30 days on the device and have rooted and installed various ROMs since. I would argue that this device has better wifi than other devices in my house, though my router is not AC so I have no comment on AC performance. I do have an issue with N 5 ghz networks not being seen right now, but that is something I induced.
Too many factors to consider but I can say if other's haven't had issues than it's likely something else.
Distance from access point
Access point's distance from other electronic equip.,
Wireless channel
G or N connection
latest firmware on wireless access point
cabling on AP
trying a different Access Point or wireless network altogether (coffee shop, etc)
wireless sucks to troubleshoot. Constantly changing settings until some magical combination works for all of your equipment.
like to connect my Nexus 5 to wireless N I have to set my 5Ghz channel to be on upper or lower frequency band or something- can't remember which it's supposed to be, though. My PSP needs the 2.4Ghz radio set on a b/g mixed setting. That's the only weird wireless settings I've ever needed to actually get specific devices to connect.
if you're looking for advice we'd need to know the model of your router/access point, though I'd probably go look at a forum where people talk about it.
Hi,
I am wondering, if anyone else having this problem...
My best available 2.4 ghz wifi channel is 13 (2472). If I select this channel my tab does not find the wifi anymore ("out of range"). All my other devices are running on channel 13. All other channels working.
Tried it with stock rom + stock kernel as well as with stock rom + latest UpInTheAir kernel, iron rom + UpInTheAir kernel, iron rom + stock kernel, factory reset, clean flash etc...
Can anyone confirm channel 13 is working on this tab?
