False "Low On Space" Notification

So a few months ago my nexus one got a notification saying i was low on memory, even though i had 27mb of internal storage left (which i though was a lot since most apps are less than 1mb). I decided to back everything up and re-flash cyanogenmod and restore all my apps + data. The notification was no longer there, problem solved.
Well i didn't want to run into that problem/notification again so i bought a class 6 16gb microsd to use app2sd and everythings been going smooth for like a month or two.
Today i got the notification again saying "Low On Space" again even though I'm using app2sd and have over 260mb left on my ext partition.
What is going on here and how can i fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Most likely the 'Data' that the app uses is still on the Internal Memory. Only the apk file is stored on the sd ext. Other than that, I'm clueless myself. So, really...you're not saving that much space by using apps to SD. You may be able to get a handful or so more apps using apps2SD

I just run into same satuation.
A factory reset follow by apps restore didn't fixed the issue.
My total apps about 86MB(90 apps).But after install it use 140MB under /data.
Finally, I realized, it because apk is compressed by zip,after install(decompress), it use almost double the space under /data.
Come on Froyo!!!.

Damn i was hoping someone knew something about this.
I backed up all my apps again, wiped my phone and re-flashed gapps + cyanogen and no more notification.

Even if you move the apps to the sd card (froyo style), app data still resides on the internal storage so don't imagine you'll be able to install a ton of apps. I've been able to install more than the usual, but certainly can't install how many i want. I seriously consider ditching Android for this and some other reasons.
The big change will probably happen with Gingerbread but i can't wait for December.

There are phones with more ROM, just for that reason. Galaxy S, for example.
Anyway, the cache also resides on data partition, and can be quite big.

[Q] My Internal Memory Is Disappearing And I Don't Know Why?

First about my phone, It's a Sprint CDMA Hero rooted and running Damages 2.09.1 rom. I have a 16gig card in it and the phone really works well.
Now my problem..........
My internal memory has a parasite that is slowly eating it away. I have figured out that when internal memory gets below 16MB it turns on the little warning in the status bar. So this is how I'm checking my internal memory so everyone that takes their time to respond to me is using the same method. I go to Settings> SD&Phone Storage, at the bottom of the screen that comes up is the "Internal Phone Storage" Available space and mine says 15.84MB. Today I installed a highly rated memory manager from the Market and it didn't help at all. So my first question is How much "internal Phone Storage" do you have left?
Now my second question is when you go to Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> and scroll way down to "Mail - HTC Corporation" and click on that. Now look at the storage. Mine says 15.64 MB Total. Which breaks down there to Application 2.59MB and Data at 13.05MB. Clearly my Mail program is holding the biggest chunk of memory. But I want to know how this compares to everyone else's. If this is true then it would account for the parasitic growth or loss of my memory.
So if I'm way different then this will start a good discussion on what to do about this problem. Just let me say at this point that I delete all email once I have read it. I delete the sent, draft and Trash folders too. I also go into the SD Card and delete everything that is in the .Mail folder. So if my phone is storing old email now I have to fine out where and delete it.........
Also I constantly clear out the various cache's that the phone has too. But this memory is slowly going away. Any help would be appreciated very much.
I also appreciate everyone weighing in on this perplexing problem.

You can try clearing data for mail. If you don't want to reset up your accounts, back up mail account settings with titanium backup and restore afterwards. Also, consider using apps2sd, and storage is a non issue.

you are confusing storage (like a Hard Drive) and RAM (memory)... the memory manager only helps keep unneeded programs from running in the background it will not free up space on the internal 'hard drive'
you could also 'upgrade' to CyanogenMod 6 as Android 2.2 natively supports putting apps on the SD card.

You 'clear data' in the same place you 'clear cache', which you said you know how to do above. Its in the manage apps menu.

Well how do I clear space on my internal "hard drive"? How do I clear mail data which seems to be hogging my memory?
Houston we have a problem and don't know how to fix it....

Yyou go to the same place we told you before. Settings, applications, manage, then view all and sort by size. Then you will see what's taking up space. You can go into it there and clear data. If you are rooted, download cachecleaner and run it. If none of that helps then you either have to start uninstalling apps you don't use or you've done something that is affecting your storage space and you need to probably do a wipe/reflash.

Well my Mail App or rather the stock HTC Mail app is the growing hog. When I go in to "Manage Applications" all I can clear is the Cache and NOT the data that is so big. I just don't get this. My memory, as I said has a parasite that is growing and eating memory. I'm right on the ragged edge of the flagged warning coming up about "low memory".
Here is a radical idea. Can I go in to the system> app folder and copy and save the HTC Mail apk and then delete the file and hopefully the entire Mail program from my phone. Reboot and then reinstall the HTC Mail apk and run it to reinstall it and then reset up my email? It's definitely the Mail application that is growing and I don't know why. It's saving mail somewhere...........
Also I downloaded and installed the Cacheclean program and ran it. It said all my cache was already clean so it proves I have been diligent about keeping what I can clean................

that's not what that means. that means either superuser permissions is not working properly, or you've lost root on your phone, or something related to busybox, per the app developer. believe me, i've ran into that application telling me the same thing multiple times. you could never keep cache that clean on your phone unless you never used it.

Well the cache cleaner isn't working. I checked the SU program and the cache cleaner is not listed there so I guess its not working. Busybox and SU are working for titanium so the cache cleaner is a dive.
Oh well I get A for effort. I'll just use this lousy hero till it runs put of memory and I guess get a better phone like a LG or Droid.......

Or when it's no longer functional you can run the ruu and see if that fixes anything

The htc mail app has a bug where the mail doesnt get deleted even when you empty the trash. Its stored somewhere hidden on the internal memory. Also if you sync mail for more than 3 days it seems to cause memory issues as well.
Best bet is to use the K9 mail app. It will allow you to keep things clean.
Now 13+ megs should not be causing an issue so obviously you have a decent amount of apps installed as well. Id recommend running the a2sd to keep your internal clean.

I am following through as I alway do to thank you all for your help and tell you how I resolved the problem. I received some great advice from everyone and the last tip, which is usually my luck was the best.
The bottom line someone questioned why I thought I lost root. I explained what was going on and the best and final suggestion was to down load the latest Superuser.apk and flash through "recovery". Yes I had to ask exactly what that meant but I followed the directions and did it. Problem solved. I had SU working on my phone for Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. Then I downloaded Cachecleaner and it worked this time perfectly and it found 25MB of junk on my phone and cleared it out. So now I'm running 40MB of internal memory with all my programs working rather snappy now. In my estimation I screwed up the SU with the memory manager that was recommended somewhere along the line. When it didn't do anything for me I uninstalled it and I think my SU went with it. But the phone is fixed and I want to thank you all for your time in responding to my problem and requests. Sometimes multiple............

Low Internal Memory - SMS Warning too

I was surprised to see my wife's N1 only had 20 MB of internal memory. She is running Enomther's Rom, which runs great.. I don't think the issue is tied to that.
She has hardly any apps on her phone, and rarely does anything other than work emails (Touchdown) and Facebook/Twitter.
Considering how little she has on the phone, and how little she does with it I, was just really shocked that she would have so little internal memory. She called me just now and stated she has a notification that she missed a text message because she did not have enough memory.
What the heck could be taking up so much memory?
What's the fix? There isn't really anything to delete (that I'm aware of)....
Search seemed helpess with "internal" and "memory" there were WAY too many posts. Please help if you can!

Browser cache might be huge, if she has many sites opened in many browser windows.
Her "not many" apps might be "many" enough for a phone with limited internal memory like Nexus - having ~200MB for apps, data and cache together.
There are exactly 3 solutions:
1) Keep browser in check. It's always a good practice.
2) Use native Froyo method and move apps to SD.
3) Use Apps2EXT method and move apps to SD. You can also move Dalvik-cache to /cache.

Hmm, she has MAYBE 10 apps?
I downloaded a cache cleaner and ran that, it removed maybe 8 MBs? That was this past weekend, and she got that message about low memory today. I doubt she has even opened the browser since then to be honest. Very light user.

okay, so option 1 is to move dalvik cache to sd, which I think you do in Advanced > Amon's recovery, right? Any ill effects from doing this if I switch roms?..
Option 2, apps2ext... she does not have an ext partition and frankly surprised this is needed... is the nexus that low on memory? My Vibrant has 1.6 GBs. same question, any ill effects if moving to another rom with the apps on the ext? I did that a lot back in the day with the G1. I remember having some issues and having to do fix permissions a lot.

Check, what's using the memory. Just go over the apps.
You can't do Dalvik-to-SD, because it requires EXT partition, which you don't have. You can do Dalvik-to-Cache.
There is no hassle in having apps on EXT whatsoever. The only hassle is getting them there.
ROM has nothing to do with application data usage either.

Have you tried wiping the Dalvik cache? Worth ago in case there's some built up crap I spose.

I know it's relative, but how much internal memory would you expect someone to have when they just have about 10 apps?

Depends on the apps. I can count 2 - Google Earth and Motonav, for example - that take together 50MB of space without even counting the cache part. Another 4 apps like that, and you're out of memory (if you don't move them to SD using Froyo's method or old Apps2SD-EXT method).

There's also numerous games that are > 10MB, can easily add up.

I'm curious if Touchdown (Exchzange work email) is doing something funky... I know the apps on her phone and they are all very small. Thank you guys all for the posts.
I think I may format her card and partition it and move the cache to the ext partition and see what her memory looks like after that.
Any issues you guys can think of with that, or other ideas?

Download DiskUsage, and it will give you a good idea of what the problem is...

[Q] uninstalling App does not free space

Hi there!
I use a G1 with Super E mod.
apps2ext with a 512 mb ext partion for that.
I have about 60 apps installed, all working well.
now i installed the new opera mini and the message "few storage" poped up..
I uninstalled it, but the message didn't disappear.
Then I look it up: only 5 mb left
I removed some other apps, but as suggested, this didn't free up much space (~,5 mb), because of apps2ext..
I cleared my cache using nandroid, but still the same..
What is using all my phone space?
can I clean that up somehow?

As you wrote, you have apps to sd, so most likely the app are not stored on /data, but on /sd-ext/...
Cleaning /cache will not help you, because it's almost unused. The problem you might have is, that internal space on /data is filled up, so try to clear all the application caches, especially browser, market, ....
This should free up some amount of memory and you should be able to install Opera Mini.

i ran into this same problem a couple of days ago. it was a difference of method to get this error however. my phone crashed after trying to open an app and then corrupted alot of my apps so i had to uninstall and re-install. i then found it was telling me i had low space. i cleared all my caches and checked which apps were installed on my phone and which on SD. however the only comonality is the Opera Mobile app. i too installed it when i got this error too. can this be a coincidence or not?

market cache: 450kb
browser cache: 200kb
opera mini cahce: 0kb
gmail storage : 800 kb
news and weather: 28kb
downlolad manager: 250kb
deleted these, but still have 7,8 mb free space..
had a look at /data:
du ./data -h : 47mb used
I had a closer look at the stuff and found:
13.1M ./com.opera.browser/lib
even if i dont have opera mobile installed, i also found
925.5K ./com.opera.mini.android
which i currently use...
removed the com.opera.browser .. 20mb free...
additional apps that use much space here:
# du ./ -h |grep M
1.5M ./com.facebook.katana
1.7M ./com.rovio.angrybirds
1.0M ./com.android.providers.contacts/databases
3.0M ./com.adobe.reader
17.5M ./com.navigon.navigator
these are large, but ok..
and this one:
899.5K ./com.android.packageinstaller/files -> i delete the tmpCopy.apk
now i have a bit of a breath.. lets see what we can delete from the system

im not sure about the loss of space, however you will not see an ext partition using windows as it does not recognise it. with some file explorers you can pick it up if im right. otherwise you have to use linux on the sd card to see the partition. it cannot be done via the usb mount

I thought it might be something like that. i'm a windows guy. mcse. but i know zip about unix/linux. lol. it doesn't make sense though to presumably make a partition on the card and then it takes from your internal space. so I don't see the point of partitioning your card. hence, app2sd seems useless. I cannot find an explanation anywhere of how it works. also, I have an incredible, what the hell is that 8gb of memory for. no explanation anywhere. it just sits there free. what is it for if it can't be utilized?

I cant understand why its taken up space on your phone tfor a2sd apart from when it adds the data files for the apps. the a2sd partition stores the apps on the sd card in a partition that it cons the phone into thinking is an internal section.
Where is the 8gb you are referring to? is it on the phone or the card?

exactly! there is 8gb free. well, 7+, but I don't know linux. so it's just a waste. i ended up reformatting my card and got the space back on my internal memory. can anyone explain that? I gave it a shot cuz I know computers and it worked. i back up everything, but it's a 2 hour downtime. I would just like to know what the heck is the point? anyone know what that 8gb is wasted for on the Incredible?

using ultimate droid now. no themes. pretty simple. have used several rom's. no one can explain what the 8gb is for. not even verizon. or HTC.
the incredible has 750mb of internal storage. I can see that's for apps and OS. but there are 8gb of other internal memory that is free. wtf? I've been kind of ignoring it thinking it might be for future use or something, til I partitioned my sd card and realized it took from that 750mb space.

as far as i know it shouldnt have taken anything from that space at all. it should have done what every computer does and only create a partition on the card. thats odd. do you get any names for the areas that are free? like you would with a folder name.

thats what i thought. like i said, i know windows through and through. there was no indication of a partition anywhere. kind of bugs me. always heard linux was easy. still would like to know about that 8gb too. don't get me wrong, i love the droid, but the way memory and or storage works makes no sense at all

there is an app called root explorer on the market. its a paid app but it lets you explorer all the folders and from what i can see the ext partition is known as sd-ext. sdcard is the obv one. system is the rom or os as it were and if installed correctly (only know this from the G1(Dream)) the data folder is where it stores all the information and settings for the apps and system settings

have you checked your text messages? because those also takes up space too, even tho text messages are really small in size, but if you have a LOT of them without deleting them, over time they usually build up

S5830i running out of free space for no reason

Hey all,
My friend just got his Galaxy Ace S5830i couple of weeks a go, and he isn't a phone\computer expert, i helped him install several apps on it (waze\whatsapp\tunein\ Facebook and.. that's it)
and the phone reports that he is running out of space, it says he have 20mb left out of 200mb, but he have 2gb sd card with 1.8gb free on it, it doesn't seam like there is any app that he can move to the sd, I attempted to use the app called "apps 2 SD", i got him rooted for this app to work and it says that there are no apps that could be moved to the SD card.
what gives? how can this be solved? how can i force move apps to the sd card or remove locked system apps that he doesn't use (like voice search, Google navigator\street view, alarm clock, memos etc, Samsung account related apps)?

Root the phone and use some a2sd script!

I did, in the format of a program (app) that requires root permission, i therefore rooted the phone beforehand, and I did move 2mb worth of apps.
any other idea? perhaps the script you refer to can do something the app cant?

also try cleaning all the Dalvik cache it, I hope I have helped.

Did it just now, no effect what so ever, 167mb available, 23mb free, phone screams for space to be free, any nonlocked app is on the sd, most of the others removed, why did Samsung make a phone with total of 300ish mb storage is beyond me, the much older galaxy s 1 had 8gb in the cheap module, i mean .. come on didn't they think that a simple user might ran out of space by simply using 5 utility apps??
very very sad for my friend, which in turn is mad at Samsung, also shop dont accept return for any reason after 14days (which is inline with the laws here) so he cant do jack, i suggested selling it as "as new" condition with bonus of free screen protector, case, and the original box for say 70% of the new price.. not sure if he will even manage to move it that way :-\

You only tried one app. It may be buggy.
I'd suggest trying the Link 2 SD app. Just long click on any (user) app in the list then try to move it.

Look into partitioning sd card and linking apps to the partition using link2sd. This is by far the method that frees more memory in stock rooted devices.
To remove system apps you don't want:
Link2sd and/or titanium backup can be used to uninstall system locked apps.
Manually you can remove system apps by going into system/app with a root explorer (es file explorer is a free app for this) then delete the .apk and matching .odex files of the apps you don't want.

Link apps using SD partition and Link2SD

A phone...with 300 mb...i know roms worth a gb. I dont own a ace myself but i can tell you that if an app cant be moved to sd card via settings>applications>manage apps>[app name]>move to sd card then it wint move. Because some apps are made so that the files it accesses can only be in one big file. Some however (like some games) have 2 folders that it can access seperatly. Like save data and the game itself. One the save data is accessed it dosnt need to load any more information from the sd card. It will only re write the data. But with things like facebook it cant keep going between login details and app. Once logged in it keeps that information until you log out. If it part of it were in the sd card then it would keep telling you to re-log because it looses your data once it switches back to phone memory. Because of this most apps that require something that must be read all at once with app and login at the same time. Also the ace is low on ram. If you moved apps like that onto the sd card it would slow down as well. Apps like app2sd are kinda useless as it does the same as the manage apps part of settings. Even if you did move an something to sd card you would still have the app and needed data in phone memory so not alot of memory would be moved unless its something like a game as i said. The phone storage keeps the levels all in one. But the game data will unlock those meaning more game data space than app space. Or maybe you could try delete system apps with that there rooted device. Should improve memory quite a bit. Right now i dont even know how i wrote all this...but still. I say samsung mucked up if the ace has 300mb. My phone is only a wee bit better (0.1 inches...yes...you heard) and even my phone is alot better then this and the best part is...its a samsung! Anyway. I have downloaded titanium backup and with it I am backing up bloatware and then uninstalling it (and then moving the backup out of the phone and to my friend's computer.. just in case)
next up I plan to follow the wiki in regards to SD card partitioning:

in order to format the sd card to two partitions, data partition (fat) and ex2 (if i understand correctly) so that I could link apps to that parttion (the ex2 one)

just as an FYI, the phone got 384mb (according to the wiki) out of witch only 220 is visible, and stock status (first boot up) + whatsapp\waze\tunein\facebook\shazam .. the phone sits on 196mb used and 24mb free, at which point it screams for space, that is the source of all the problems of this device.
not to mention the low ram quantetiy, which in theory shouldn't even be a problem as long as you use one app at a time (no tunein radio while facebooking, for example) which is acceptable.

I am going to post an update once I am finished with titanium backup root (free).
* in regards to formatting\reparttioning the sd card, did i get my idea right? its part FAT (for pictures and mp3 files) and part Ex2 for apps, so from a 2gb memory card I could in theory get away with 1500mb FAT partition and 500mb EX2, assuming I plan to not install any additional apps and just need some breathing space (23mb is clastor****bik to say the least)

I even went as far as to find the startup\shutdown sound files and replace them with one byte (1/1000 of a KB) size silent file to save additional ~150kb.
I removed oh so many system apps and Samsung bloat ware nonsense, googled some safe-list apps posts made on xda and used them to guide me as for whats safe to be removed, live wallpaper, Samsung accounts, all share, duel clock and many others are now gone.
and I am now on whooping 25MB free with 165MB used, nothing else to do, used all apps and scripts I simply cant free more space.
the free space error msg is gone now, the phone can receive SMS messages once more, but few Waze updates and some more sms and I am not sure how well will it be :-\
my friend is so furies at Samsung, as am I :\

Use the following command in Terminal emulator :
pm setInstallLocation 2
After this all apps will be installed to sd card by default!

Thanks, done that now, but that is not the problem, the problem is only having 25mb free as is, even with new pictures saved to the sd card and new softwares install to the sd card, some stuff simply stay on the internal memory and the only thing left for me to remove is the internal screws of the actual phone.. thats how far i went with this :-\
My guess right now is that Samsung had chips of 384 (or maybe 256+128) left over after a production of some phone got stopped so they figured it would fit perfectly into entery level phone .. cant say that i am happy with there result.
