I was surprised to see my wife's N1 only had 20 MB of internal memory. She is running Enomther's Rom, which runs great.. I don't think the issue is tied to that.
She has hardly any apps on her phone, and rarely does anything other than work emails (Touchdown) and Facebook/Twitter.
Considering how little she has on the phone, and how little she does with it I, was just really shocked that she would have so little internal memory. She called me just now and stated she has a notification that she missed a text message because she did not have enough memory.
What the heck could be taking up so much memory?
What's the fix? There isn't really anything to delete (that I'm aware of)....
Search seemed helpess with "internal" and "memory" there were WAY too many posts. Please help if you can!
Browser cache might be huge, if she has many sites opened in many browser windows.
Her "not many" apps might be "many" enough for a phone with limited internal memory like Nexus - having ~200MB for apps, data and cache together.
There are exactly 3 solutions:
1) Keep browser in check. It's always a good practice.
2) Use native Froyo method and move apps to SD.
3) Use Apps2EXT method and move apps to SD. You can also move Dalvik-cache to /cache.
Hmm, she has MAYBE 10 apps?
I downloaded a cache cleaner and ran that, it removed maybe 8 MBs? That was this past weekend, and she got that message about low memory today. I doubt she has even opened the browser since then to be honest. Very light user.
I sent enomther a tweet, his reply was:
RT @enomther @CallipH need to implement either dalvik-cache-2-/cache or apps2ext in SpareParts (DataStorage options) ... sysdc-2-/cache is default on cm6
okay, so option 1 is to move dalvik cache to sd, which I think you do in Advanced > Amon's recovery, right? Any ill effects from doing this if I switch roms?..
Option 2, apps2ext... she does not have an ext partition and frankly surprised this is needed... is the nexus that low on memory? My Vibrant has 1.6 GBs. same question, any ill effects if moving to another rom with the apps on the ext? I did that a lot back in the day with the G1. I remember having some issues and having to do fix permissions a lot.
Thanks for all the help man.
Check, what's using the memory. Just go over the apps.
You can't do Dalvik-to-SD, because it requires EXT partition, which you don't have. You can do Dalvik-to-Cache.
There is no hassle in having apps on EXT whatsoever. The only hassle is getting them there.
ROM has nothing to do with application data usage either.
Have you tried wiping the Dalvik cache? Worth ago in case there's some built up crap I spose.
^^ thanks.
^ I did before flashing the rom. Will do it again.
I know it's relative, but how much internal memory would you expect someone to have when they just have about 10 apps?
Depends on the apps. I can count 2 - Google Earth and Motonav, for example - that take together 50MB of space without even counting the cache part. Another 4 apps like that, and you're out of memory (if you don't move them to SD using Froyo's method or old Apps2SD-EXT method).
There's also numerous games that are > 10MB, can easily add up.
I'm curious if Touchdown (Exchzange work email) is doing something funky... I know the apps on her phone and they are all very small. Thank you guys all for the posts.
I think I may format her card and partition it and move the cache to the ext partition and see what her memory looks like after that.
Any issues you guys can think of with that, or other ideas?
Download DiskUsage, and it will give you a good idea of what the problem is...

So a few months ago my nexus one got a notification saying i was low on memory, even though i had 27mb of internal storage left (which i though was a lot since most apps are less than 1mb). I decided to back everything up and re-flash cyanogenmod and restore all my apps + data. The notification was no longer there, problem solved.
Well i didn't want to run into that problem/notification again so i bought a class 6 16gb microsd to use app2sd and everythings been going smooth for like a month or two.
Today i got the notification again saying "Low On Space" again even though I'm using app2sd and have over 260mb left on my ext partition.
What is going on here and how can i fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Most likely the 'Data' that the app uses is still on the Internal Memory. Only the apk file is stored on the sd ext. Other than that, I'm clueless myself. So, really...you're not saving that much space by using apps to SD. You may be able to get a handful or so more apps using apps2SD
I just run into same satuation.
A factory reset follow by apps restore didn't fixed the issue.
My total apps about 86MB(90 apps). But after install it use 140MB under /data.
Finally, I realized, it because apk is compressed by zip, after install(decompress), it use almost double the space under /data.
Come on Froyo!!!.
Damn i was hoping someone knew something about this.
I backed up all my apps again, wiped my phone and re-flashed gapps + cyanogen and no more notification.
Even if you move the apps to the sd card (froyo style), app data still resides on the internal storage so don't imagine you'll be able to install a ton of apps. I've been able to install more than the usual, but certainly can't install how many i want. I seriously consider ditching Android for this and some other reasons.
The big change will probably happen with Gingerbread but i can't wait for December.
There are phones with more ROM, just for that reason. Galaxy S, for example.
Anyway, the cache also resides on data partition, and can be quite big.
This morning i got a notification that my phone storage space is getting low. I have 12.8 MB free according to the system stats. It seems, though, that my phone thinks I have 0 MB free, as I tried to download something and it said I had no room (the file was a few dozen KB).
I then received a notice that a text had been rejected because my text message memory was full. I went in and did some house cleaning: deleted about 15 threads, some with 150-200 msgs in it. I then tried sending myself a test text, and it still said that my text message memory was full.
Anyone have any idea what's going on, and how to fix it? I'm having terrible flashbacks to my BB Curve when it didn't have a SD card in it.

This is Android's "dirty little secret". All of your apps are stored on your phone's internal storage. If you're on a N1 then you're running 2.2, right?
Go to settings>applications>manage applications> all, click on each app and see if you can move to SD. While you're in there, clear the less important app's cache. Google Earth is a HOG.
You can also root and flash CyanogenMod. Then You'll be able to put all apps on your SD.

I am on 2.2, but most of the apps I have can't be moved to SD because the developer hasn't enabled it.
How much internal storage does the N1 have? I don't have that many large apps on here. Maybe I should uninstall Google Earth, which is a huge hog, you're right.
Empty your browser cache; this is usually enough.
If you're willing to root, there are a few ways to fix this using your SD card.
If it's affecting SMS as well your cache is full.
Not ideal for this to full up before /data - you may need an app like CacheMate to manage it for you.
I had this happen once and it was my SD card that was actually full, not anything on the phone.

Don't put widgets on sd then. That is what Google specifically says not to do. Simple enough. Don't put anything on sd that has to continuously run, services, live wallpapers, widgets.
having the same problem, all my caches are empty though. it said it had to reject a text due to lack of memory. now that i have freed up some (at 32mb free atm) it still doesn't receive the text.
this is a major downside on android's part.

I have all my apps on sd card that can be loaded there. I am having the same problem with low memory and messages not allowed. I had to uninstall a couple of apps that load only on internal memory and I hate that. Is there any way to check internal memory and clear that up? I have cleared as much cache as possible through manage applications in settings. Is there any other way to free up internal memory? Using CM6.0.3 rooted

I have something over 100 apps on my phone, not Gapps, just downloaded stuff. If I'm reading it right titanium backup backs up over 200. I have a 16 GB sd card and I'm using CM6 which allows me to put whatever apps on my SD I want. Other ROMs let you do this as well, or you can root and move all your apps to SD. I just personally like CM6. Be careful though, I've noticed that some apps that get moved don't work or strangely disappear. especially if they have a widget. There is a link to the one click app in my signature below. It's called universal androot.
Good luck.
I am rooted as well and using CM6, most of my apps are loaded on my16 gig card, however some of them won't let me load to my card (slingbox, etc). I was just wondering if there is a way to access my internal memory to see if there were some things I could delete that I didn't need anymore. Any help would be appreciated

My advise: Just root using Androidroot (1click-root) and after that search in Xda for setinstalllocation, download and install it and move all your apps to the sd-card (don't move widgets, autostart apps, root apps? or services). Did that last week and get back almost 40 mb in internal storage.
While you are doing it suggest you install from the market cachmate for root - it will be your day-a-day friend.
Best of all if i'm correct, you will Keep your warranty ok since you don't unlock your bootloader

How? I have been searching for solution after installing cutom Rom and now I have 3.6mb memory on my sensation after clearing all cache, data in apps. Please helpif you can as I cannot find specific answer and I cannot post to development pages I got the Rom.
Noob here. Noob on XDA anyway. I've owned by Nexus One for over two years now and I've been pretty happy with it. However, I am finally running out of internal memory, even after moving all the apps I could to flash.
Actually, it's mostly TMobile's crappy voicemail app's fault that I am here. If there is less than 10% of space on the device, it flips out and won't download voicemails any longer, which is horrible.
So, here I am today, I just rooted my phone and using posts like this one, I am figuring out how I can force some of those greedy apps onto my sdcard to free up some space. I will probably go with a custom rom here too soon, since there will no longer be updates for the Nexus One.
I know there are much much better phones out now, but this thing works and has been very good.

I'm not sure how this works on the sensation, but try this.
Since you already have a custom ROM, I'm assuming your phone has been rooted. In that case, install darktremor's a2sd script. You'll have to create and ext3 or ext4 partition on your sd card, and then the script will automatically move some apps to the ext partition freeing up space on your phones data partition.

The same goes for you.
I can't post the link for the script, but just search the forums or google for dta2sd and you'll find it.
To create an ext partition, I would recommend using 4ext recovery.
Hope this helps.

1st ... what rom are you using ?
2nd ... try this flash as zip in recovery http://www.2shared.com/file/OFasim5b/ad2sdx-10-RC01.html ......
I installed the eVil rom on my N1 and I am now constantly getting the low error message. I could not care less about it but it looks like it's preventing the phone from downloading any updates or new apps. Yes I still think I have more than 200MB available. I've zapped lots of apps and slim down what's on the phone to the barebone. I do not want to go through any A2SD workaround, also because I do not really have much on the phone and whatever I can move to the SD has already been moved.
Is there an alternative solution to this bugging message ?
P_
There isnt actually a workaround for this. You simply need more space. While its debatable how much space in enough space, most people would agree that you should keep at least 50mb internal space on a Nexus One. I have 132 apps installed and have 150mb free on mine.
Apps2sd/apps2ext is definetely worth the small amount of time it takes to setup.
You can't have more than 200MB available, since all the app storage space is 196MB.
Apps2EXT doesn't work in the same way as Froyo's Apps2SD, and frees MUCH more space - including Dalvik-cache.
With this message showing, you don't get any text messages (SMS) - they're lost.
Can't I just move the dalvik-cache manually and create a sim link to it.
P_
You can (move it to /cache). You also can do it to the "data/data" folder. You also can completely replicate all the work of Apps2EXT, and you can manually repartition the SD card and write the boot scripts that will mount the EXT partition. The question is - why would you want to waste your time doing that, when somebody already created something that you need.
First off, I suspect you're not looking at the right thing.. Settings->SD Card and Phone Storage and look at Internal Phone Storage for available space.. It's <20, yes?
You can try clearing Browser cache from the Settings->Applications...
How many apps do you have installed? Any HUGE apps, like Nook, Google Earth, Flash, etc? If so, maybe you do need to do apps2ext to free up space.
If that's not enough, then DO NOT move dalvik-cache to /cache, it's NOT BIG ENOUGH. If you're running out of space using apps2ext your dalvik-cache is probably 100M or more, and /cache has 96M, and you do not want to run out of space for dalvik-cache. If you must, move it to the SD card.
Problems with my N1 are continuous...
I really need your help guys...
If some of you read my topics, the most terrible problem I have had was that I lost signal and sometimes I have "only emergency call"...now this problem disappear, and it works fine...
but I can't understand if another problem is important or not!
I mean, my phone became hot...some times warm when I play, or using many many apps...and more I use it and more it became hot...but not so hot that i can be burned!
but yesterday I starting to worry about it, because I've done a 20 minutes call without 3G (only wifi ON but not connected because no hotspot was usable) and the phone became really hot, we are in summer and it was pleny annoying have it in hand...
Is it normal?
Can I monitor the temperature of the phone? how?
I hope that I don't have to give my phone to htc for warranty
Another 2 question:
Can i reinstall the radio rom? what is the lastes for nexus1?
Can some one explain me the problem of the internal storage? because I'm on cyanogen and I've activate the option that all app have to be installed on SD, but I've read that someone make an ext partition, someother use script with app2sd, other said that app2sd is old from froyo...
I didn't unsterst if I have to wipe and make this partition or not...
thanks a lot in adavance

Read FAQ, question 9. Then read the thread it points you to. Then read some more threads, until you know what you want. It's not one answer, it's a matter of preference.
thanks how much space I have to reserve to ext4 partition?
Again, it's a matter of preference. If you see yourself loading a LOT of apps, and/or want to try MIUI or Sense-based custom ROMs, then you'll be good with 1GB EXT4. If you just want to move your apps but use stock or CM - 512MB EXT4 will be enough.
thanks jack
I have CM...but...i cannot understand:
1. what is the difference between DT, Data2ext e data2whathever
2. if I make an ext partition of 512Mb then all apps goes there? or it work like the internal memory so part of the apps goes in the ext partition and the other part in fat partiton?
3. what is better using Miui with integrated script? or CM + DT?
really really thanks a lot
I'll try to explain.
The OS isn't aware of the change, so it keeps acting just like it usually does - putting the apps either on internal memory or on internal+FAT (depends on your settings, app preferences, etc).
Each app consists of 3 parts:
1) The app itself.
2) The app's data (saves, logs, databases, etc).
3) The system's Dalvik-cache for the app (the environment which is running the app).
DT by default moves part 1 to EXT. Unlike Froyo default method, it moves the whole app to SD (which isn't always the case with default method), and allows this also for widgets etc (which isn't the case with default method). It can also move parts 2 and 3 to SD, but it isn't default and requires explicit user command to initiate. The common use is to move parts 1 and 3 to SD, and leave part 2 on internal NAND.
Data2ext and Data2whatever do essentially the same, but they're moving all 3 parts by default, AFAIK.
thanks a lot!
but if the whole app goes in the ext4 partition 1gb is really few I can't install offline navigator, games and really heavy size apps...
so maybe it's like the default froyo app, one part in the FAT partition and the other in the internal memory...
and with DT one part in the EXT4 and the huge part in the FAT and if it is like I said 512Mb or 1Gb is enough
Each big app - game, offline navigator etc - is by default programmed to use the FAT for the huge databases that it holds. When you download a Glu game, for example, it asks you if to save the data to internal memory or to the SD card. This is additional mechanism, that doesn't depend on the OS at all, and is completely app-specific. ALL the big apps have it, since they're all aware of the low internal storage in smaller/older devices.
I had quite an amount of apps installed on the Nexus, and never needed more than 512MB EXT4, using DT's A2SD with Dalvik2SD enabled (options 1 and 3 enabled from the previous post). I think 1GB should be more than enough for 99% of users.
thanks now it's clear...
I've installed everything...
after giving the a2sd cachesd command
i have to give also the a2sd datasd command? or it is unecessary?
EDIT:
Before I execute the a2sd cachesd the a2sd check working fine, now after the a2sd cachesd if I check I always have permission denied
no one ansewer but I have another problem...
I've installed the last CM 7.1 RC1
I've done a full wipe
installed CM
installed DT
installed gAPPS
everythings works fine but, I see in the Application Manager some app that doesn't appear in the launcher...
for example street view and google books...
I've try to flash again the zip via recovery but nothing change and I can't uninstall them -.-
(Streetview work via google maps however, but google books is a ghost app)
About cachesd and datasd - it's all about your preferences. My suggestion is - if you're light user, don't use any of them, if you're a heavy user - use cachesd (don't execute datasd).
Can't help you with Google books, sorry. Street View isn't considered a separate app, it's add-on for Maps, so it's not supposed to show, AFAIK.
From the Link2SD FAQ:
Link2SD does not link application's private data files that are located in /data/data directory, they remain in the internal storage. Thus each app you install will still have some data on the internal storage so you can still potentially fill up your internal storage even if you are moving all of your apps over.

Why is this the case? There are other Linking apps which do move /data/data files. Why would Link2SD not do this?
I wish to ask this before I go bothering the application author. I figure there is some well-known issue here which I am not aware of.
I may have to switch linking apps because my /data part is getting too full, mostly due to Google's crappy maps and browser apps, which are horrifically fat.

I believe app data isn't moved, because it will make your phone laggy as hell. Guess the dev chose for finding more space, but not at the cost of speed.

This makes no sense at all. In many cases, newer SD cards are FASTER than the internal flash on older phones.

Sustained write/read speeds don't tell the whole story, as you may know (probably not). You probably believe the more megapixels a camera sensor has, the better? Also, the phone must support those faster µSD cards. Seeing you've only been here for half a year and you've only contributed with a dozen posts, I can say for certain that you've never read any warnings for not moving app-data. It's not your fault.
Unfortunately, I noticed that all the new people coming here have no respect or decency and think they know everything already. Guess what: you don't know **** . So, like I already said before, drop the attitude.
Respectfully, you are simply wrong.
Modern SD cards are faster than the internal flash on older phones, which are the phones that need apps like Link2SD. I don't know about more modern phones.

Bonnie++ is the best way, that I know of, to benchmark a flash storage devices, but it's not for noobs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169910
I remember running bonnie++ against my Nexus One and a cheap 16GB card about a year ago when that above post was made and my SD card was faster than the internal flash in almost every way, and that was then.
Yes, my post count is low. XDA Devs is full of loud noobs who think writing a java app or rooting a phone makes them a leet technical resource. I've been writing software and managing unix systems for over a decade.
Well, sir, you go ahead and put your app-data on your µSD . Benchmarks are for [random word].
Did I also mention that somehow some new members are bragging about what they have achieved and are capable of, while they haven't made themselves useful in any way? If not, now I did.
Is there still no possibility to move also the data folder (e.g of games)? Most of my applications are rather small and most space is taken by the game data folders.
tommert38 is correct here.
Because there is no guarantee, that if your sdcard is fast, it'a also faster than your internal flash. There are more dependies than only the speed of the card. What are the specs of the nexus one sd-reader? This could be an popotentially barrier.
At least: Which size supports the nexus one for sd-cards?
I agree with the OP about this. If it is a worry about the speed, i'm sure mr. bulent akpinar can at least provide an option in the app to enable/disable saving /data/data to the link2sd partition. everybody happy!
here's a link to the original link2sd thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919326 maybe the app author can take note of it as a suggestion for future updates
One other benefit of not placing /data/data on the SD card is for the case if your sd-ext partition fails to mount for some reason (e.g. failing a file system check). If /data/data was on the SD card, then most of your application settings will be gone, including for builtin apps like the launcher. It will look very similar to a factory reset.
With /data/data on internal storage, your settings will be still be visible in this scenario and it will only be the downloaded apps that disappear. This should be somewhat easier to recover from.

Is there still no possibility to move also the data folder (e.g of games)? Most of my applications are rather small and most space is taken by the game data folders.

Consider all the risks and if you are willing to take them you might find this thread usefull. Just be sure you know what you are doing
LINK2SD v3.4.1 - No links data/data
apologies for posting to an aged thread, but just today LINK2SD has been updated to include linking of the /data/data
I'm already enjoying the new found space made available, it seems to work very well so far ...

May I ask you if you noticed a lag or performance slow down? I also love link2sd but I fear to upgrade to the latest version cause I don't want to compromise the reliability of my system, which so far, has been excellent.
I have read that moving the /data files could slow down the phone or cause overheating of the sd card. Actually I have a class 10 ultra II Sandisk.
Thanks for any report and opinion.

I haven't done any benchtesting or anything but haven't noticed any slowdown or battery drain what-so-ever.
My phone runs just as good as before.
I only link my game apps to SD because I expect one day the SD card will fail (like most media storage devices) and most of my essential apps are un-linked and stored on the internal phone mem.

Thanks, I have linked all my apps and it is now almost an year. I was very curious about the possibility to move the data too but was a bit on the standby, because if you check on the play store, there are some complaints. Now, I don't know what to do, maybe I'll give it a try.
Thanks for your kind reply.

I guess some reviews may be on different phone models.
All I can advise is check the gppd & bad reviews and the phone model. Also to have a titanium backup of your older link2SD so you can roll back if needbe.
Worth just linking a few & see how it goes.
No complaints on my Galaxy S3, works fine & has done for the past 2 years

Well I downloaded the new version (I have the plus option) but I don't understand how to move the data to sd since in the options it is specified that only future installs will be moved (if I flag the option).
Back to the original question. I use Mounts2SD for my Nexus One. I check to move Apps, Data, Dalvik, and Libraries. The rest I leave alone. I have no problems with space with this set-up. Speed is decent, I think the issues I have are probably related to the various custom ROMs I've been using but I can't be 100% sure.
