I'm running a Sense ROM (Evil's), but need a good kernel for battery performance? I don't care about overclocking, etc
Any suggestions?
It'll depend on whether your hardware can work with such low voltages, but you can try the various flavors of wild monks' kernels.
I'm personally using his 900mV AVS CFS kernel but not too many people can run that without problems.
The 950mV SVS CFS kernel should be quite safe.

Dude,
you cant use any other kernel than evils one,
thats why sense works on your phone, because evil has tweaked the kernel to make it so.
if you flash another kernel you will lose radio, wifi, viseo, and everything else that makes it a phone...
All sense roms have a battery drain issue on the nexus.. you either live with it or you put stock android back one

Currently, I don't need radio or wifi, so I guess the kernel should work, no?

Radio generally refers to all wireless communication capabilities, not necessarily "FM radio"

So, I have been using roms for some time now and I see new ones coming out in plethora.
Which are built on the official sprint release of 2.1??
Which ones enable over clocking? I see a few that say that they are OC'd, but the others just do not mention it, is it safe to presume that if it does not say that it is OC'd then it is not?
I love damage control, having a few issues with fresh toast, but I don't believe that I can go back from an overclocked rom, the speed differences are one of the main reasons I went OC'd in the first place.
What is your favorite ROM and why?

You can flash an OC'd kernel on top of DamageControl, you know.
I'm using DamageControl OC'd. Quick, Sense UI, and works with almost no issues (except random, non-reproducible ones)
I've run most of the ones here. Usually if they are already OC'd then it will say in the OP. If not, you can flash the OC'd kernel over the ROM. For instance I flashed REGAWMOD ROM and really liked it. So I then flashed the honeybun kernel over it and saw a significant increase in speed.
My daily ROM is Aloysius 2.1. I downloaded the non-OC version and then used OC widget and the OC kernel to dial it up to my specs (730). I think it is the best of both worlds. The OC version is already scaled up at 710 so you wouldn't really need an OC app unless you want to go higher (my hero freezes anything higher than 730).

Which OC'd kernel are you using? I see that there are issues with almost all of them. Either certain features don't work, like receiving phonecalls, or you have to deal with latency when coming out of sleep mode.
the oc kernel pretty much has no isssues now. You're seeing some old info. If you use a recently updated rom (last month or two), you're probably not going to have any consistent issues. Maybe once in a while, but I have less issues on zen slide and darch droid than I did on stock.
I belive this is the kernel with the least amount of issues right now, as it was made specifically to address most old issues.
DarchKernel aka DarchHoney aka "toast's OC Kernel" (though I don't know why people call it that, there is another kernel like OC Kernel Godm0de or something with the same name, and with the problems the one below addresses) i don't know why people give so many names. it's confusing. everyone should just call it DarchKernel, as it is called in the thread.

Lmao darchkernal is its name but there r two versions.
One for the damage/fresh roms...darchshiz
And one for honeybun roms by ghbil and beezy420. Darchhoney
Some roms run better off the darchhoney rather than darchshiz and vice versa. Very minor differences but still they r different.
And to add to this: Both Darkshizz and Darchhoney run the .34 kernel. Toast has one as well (ToastKernel) that runs .29 kernel. Both overclocks.

What do you guys think is the best rom for rooted nexus ones?I am using kang-o-rama 1.0b1 and it seems very fast and stable. So what roms do you guys think are worth trying?I am new to android comming from nokia e71 then iphone 3g and now to what i think is the best ANDROID.
It's all based on personal preference. My opinion?
Have a decent sized sd card, and install a ROM.
Trick it out to where you like it, nand backup.
Rename the BDS via Astro to the name of the ROM
Wipe, flash another ROM, repeat. Right now, I have
flashed versions of 3 ROMs.
-CM6
-asimrom (based off mcr)
-enom's most recent
CM6 I'm going to delete. It's cool, but I just don't feel it.
asimrom is VERY fast, and pretty stable, imo, and I get brilliant battery life with my undervolted kernel.
enom is the one I'm currently trying, and I must say I love it. With trackball alert built in, there's no need for trackball alert, and it's serving me very well. I'll use it for a week, and if it stands up, I may use it instead of asimrom as my main rom.
it's all about preference really.

What he said. With my particular kernel, I get about sixteen or seventeen hours, and I'm seeing the same type of battery consumption on enom.

I've been running Fasty v2.0 for a while now and i'm looking to change to a new rom... but not sure what to go with CM7? newest Fasty, serendipity, firefly.. ect.. so many choices so little time i'm looking for something that will have good battery life, and something that doesn't lag a ton.. i know this is kinda a personal preference thing.. but what seems to be a popular rom?
Any suggestions would be great.. also how can i check my bootloader version?

I dont know of a way to check bootloader version. Some of the super developers around here might, but I don't.
Asking what would be a good rom to use is like asking a guy across the world what kind of ice cream you should buy. The only way to know for sure is to try them all.
Basic info on roms. Most I9000 ports have more tweaks and are higher in the dev (source drops for them before I897's) They also have better upload speeds on mobile network. I897 have Audience chip support. Any else past that would be my own opinion on both types.

Anything gingerbread based is going to have worse battery life than a Froyo based rom. This is because the source code is available for Froyo allowing for some system processes to be turned off. These processes continuously run in Gingerbread eating up battery. If I were you, I would try out Andromeda3. Its an I-9000 based rom with great support if you run into any problems. Not to mention a BLN control kernel with voodoo lagfix.
If you need good battery life, I would stay with an i9000 or I897 based rom. They are super stable for daily use.

Im having ALOT better battery on GB than what I ever had on Froyo roms.... Just saying.
I got better battery life on Continuum v6.1, kinda. On MIUI, get pretty good battery life. Big difference is on MIUI I leave background data on, whereas on Continuum I had it disabled.

Well, i haven't seen anything in other kernels i'd want. Cyano's stock has just about anything i need.
- Very stable, fast and responsive
- voodoo sound (but not colors, just install app from market)
- LED notifications (customizable by app, even)
- never have i seen media scanner this fast (even with an external 8Gb SD card). - Not sure if OC/UC is possible (think i read something about pimpmycpu) but i'm not interested in doing that. Battery lasts a whole day easily (no need to UC) and phone's fast and responsive (no need to OC either).
Actually, my phone seems fast in everything i do, even games never seemed to have such great performance as they have now. And is STABLE (at least for me).
Worthless but if anyone cares, quadrant standard score's around 1750.
I'd stick with cyano's stock if you're not looking for anything else in specific.
Not saying other kernels aren't good but if everything's perfect and you don't have a specific reason to change, why fix something that's not broken?
I do recommend changing ADW launcher for something smoother like Go Launcher Ex or LauncherPro. I do recommend Go though. As smooth as launcherpro, free, has same widgets (even more), updated frequently, has loads of themes and it's ability to uninstall apps like the iphone is brilliant.
Thanks every one
all three (Neo, Fugu and Glitch) are excellent and have their strengths and weaknesses...try them all and choose the one you like.

Correct. Stock CM7 Kernel supports overclocking.
According to the benchmark scores, Neo and Glitch are the best.
But it depends on your need.

I flashed the boot img. and the GE Edition last night and noticed the back of the phone got almost too hot to handle. I have been using RayGlobe for the last month and very good results with custom radio. The signal is great, battery life exceptional and all in all the perfect rom for my phone it seems. Might give that a try. I have set up the SVN to get updates regularly , only thing is getting the raw zip from the PC to the phone

Definitely the Google Edition firmware. Its easy to use and you will learn every part of android.
Right now I'm using Trickdroid 5.6.0 purely because the phone stays cool even while charging, it's 4.1.2 so it's quicker and louder than 4.2.2 and it has no proximity sensor issues which all 4.2.2 Roms have and is no closer to being fixed.
I vote stock 4.1.2 or trickdroid 5.6.0 which is android 4.1.2.
Cheers
Thanks for your recommendations :3 will definitely check that up guys
Flashing a custom kernel ontop of your preferred ROM will help a great deal. ElementalX, for example, has options to undervolt your CPU while idle, and also has Thermal Throttling options to cause your CPU to scale back earlier, thus preventing excess heat. Neither of those options will cause performance degradation, and actually running a custom kernel generally will will make your phone perform BETTER.
Bulletproof is closest to stock, and has fewer options.
ElementalX has more options to fiddle with. If you're worried about heat, do not set the Max frequency any higher than stock. You can even safely bring it down to around 1200mhz without really any performance degradation, but I recommend leaving it stock, setting the minimum as low as it will go, undervolting, and setting maximum thermal throttling (Run Coolest I think it's labelled as)
Some custom Kernels like ElementalX and a few others have the option to control thermal throttling to make your device run cooler. If you don't want to use a custom Kernel though simply locking your CPU at a lower max frequency will produce less heat.
Keep in mind that your phone is basically one big heatsink and that Qualcomm chips have ALWAYS run hot. If you think this thing runs hot, you've never used a Touch Pro 2... Or a Sensation for that matter. My Sensation got so hot using GPS it kept rebooting. Not good when you're driving from Colorado to Louisiana where T-Mobile has no service!

Heat is more of a Kernel issue I would really recommend trying @faux123 Kernel I have used it on several different devices and have always found it to be one of the coolest running kernels there is. Elemental X is also good but I still find Faux's a little cooler running and easier on battery life using Faux's recommended settings. If you decide to try it I would also recommend purchasing Faux's app for controlling the kernel I have found it to be the best for that kernel and you are supporting a awesome developer. It can be found under Original Android Development. Hope this can help you.
No I am not a Faux fanboy I have just found his work to always be top notch with awesome support.
