[IDEA] [SETTING] Do Not Disturb - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Re-posting this as i think it'll get more valid attention in this forum.
If this is completely the wrong forum, please remove it. I just think it'll get more discussion here, with developers.
I use my phone as my alarm clock. I keep it charging on my bedside table. I do not have a house/land-line so this is my only option for communication.
It would be nice if at night, when I'm sleeping, i can set my phone (via app or setting) to a "do not disturb" type state.
In this state, i would basically like all phone calls routed to a special voice mail, that will state to the caller that i am unavailable, and to leave a message. However if it is an emergency, give the caller an option to bypass the do not disturb state and actually ring my phone.
Same with Text Messages. I would like all text messages intercepted, and responded to via text in the same fashion, with the same option for the caller to bypass the do not disturb state and actually ring/notify me of the call/text etc.
And of course, put all other notifications to silent mode etc.
Then in the morning, i can check all notifications, phone, text etc, and see what i missed.
I hope i explained this well enough.
I would like to be able to sleep without interruption, but if something important happens, or an emergency happens, i can still be gotten a hold of.

Sounds like you want either Bedside or Tasker.

Yeah, those are close to what i want.... but a lil bit more functionality, in letting the caller decide if its important enough to bypass the do not disturb status....
But one of these apps might do if i cant find one that has those features, or someone can create one. =)
Thank you for the suggestions tho.

Tasker can disable silent mode on receipt of a codeword in an SMS
ie make your voicemail "blah blah send an SMS starting with 'EMERGENCY', all caps, if you MUST reach me"
then when Tasker gets that it will turn off silent mode and they can ring again, or you could just get Tasker to squawk when an EMERGENCY text message comes through, and you can ring them back.

So you want the app to disturb you so that you can say allow or cancel? Why not just set it to vibrant then?

@stshannon: the reference to using TASKER is probably your best bet for now. Until a more dedicated application comes along to do what you need.
Have you heard of or used Tasker?
It has unlimited capabilities.

sounds like a nice request for google voice since they already have a do not disturb, they could add a "press 1 if someone is dying to interrupt this persons beauty rest"

Hmmm, i might have to take a closer look at Tasker then, it sounds to be the closest.

No, i want the system to give the option to the caller/texter if it is an emergency or not, and if so, bypass do not disturb. But it sounds like Tasker may be very very close in functionality to what i need. Ill take a closer look at that.
Thanks to those that responded.

missed call and sms reminders

hi, apologies if this has already been covered but the forum search engine is not the easiest thing to use when you are not sure what the question is!!
has anyone written anything that would give this device the ability to give periodic reminders, ie vibration alert or a beep of sorts to remind of missed calls or text messages? i am quite sure its not something which comes as a feature on the device but would be really useful.
AlarmPal from PocketMax - get it from here - is the only reliable solution I know of....
You can (supposedly) patch the registry to enable the "Repeat" option in Sounds & Notifications for any entry where it is currently greyed out (like missed call, new SMS etc..) - check out this post for all the details - I've tried this in the past and I found that the notifications kept going even after you'd read the SMS or dealt with the missed call......YMMV
Hope that helps
Mark.
excellent, cheers. looks like just the badger i was after.
On the samesite is fone alarm been using it for over a year, fantastic solution.

Do a google search for don't forget 2. Freeware.

SPB Phone Suites also has this feature, along with a nice today photo contacts option.

CALL/SMS BLOCKER plus sms auto response

Call_SMS Blocker. I found this program the other day and I just wanted to share it with everyone. This app is amazing! I searched everywhere to find something like this. With this software you can COMPLETELY block both calls and sms. Also it will send an automatic sms on your behalf when your busy. Your probably saying, yeah well that new PowerSMS program can do auto sms replies. Well did I mention that this app not only sends auto sms replies to callers but also to friends who TEXT YOU!! I think I found only like 1 other app that could do that and it wasnt nearly as good as this one. Most other ones out there either only allow you to select "known numbers" or "unkown numbers" to reply to. Well with Call_SMS Blocker, you can totally customize the lists of people that will receive your auto reply. You can even make custom messages for each individual person instead of just 1 master message like many other apps.
The only bad things about this software though is that it does cost money and it is a little confusing on how to set it up. But once you figure this thing out it is very powerful and by far the best call blocker sms blocker and sms auto responder out there!
If anyone decides to get this app I would be more than happy to help you out with getting it up and running and figuring out the settings to do what you want it to do.
This was just one of the best apps I have found in awhile and I just wanted to let others know about it. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope this program can come in handy for others like it did me.
have you tried this on WM6? link says WM5
Yes it will work on WM6. I am using it on my stock Tilt WM6 pro and it works perfectly. See, under the Download/Buy section. It says its available for WM5/WM6.x
This looks brilliant - purchased
Right, purchased this yesterday and it's awesome.
I have an annoying issue with an alarm system (secom) at my workplace, and being a keyholder, I really can't be chewed with middle-of-the-night (false) callouts. Tried to use another app to set unknown numbers to use a silent ringtone, but that didn't help in the middle of the night because of the ensuing answerphone notification.
I don't like the thought of turning my phone off, or putting onto silent in case of real emergencies from people I care about D).
Anyhoo....
.. this app is perfect. Simulates an immediate 'hangup' to unknown numbers, effectively (a) stopping you hearing them call and (b) disallowing them the ability to leave an answerphone message.

*happy*

CallBlocker

Very nice, I've been looking for an app like this for a while now. Just input a # you don't want to receive calls from and it will be blocked. Requires root, though.
Sure, you can use the built in "Send to Voice Mail" feature in Contacts, but that's not a good solution because 1) It clogs up my voice mail inbox and 2) I get an almost as annoying text notification every time someone that I have chosen to send to VM tries to call me.
The app is still pretty new, so it's lacking a few features I would like (such as regexp patterns), and I'm not sure it'll block text messages as well (which would be nice), but it's definitely a very good start.

I just downloaded it gonna start putting number in it. Do you know if you can use it to block unknown numbers?
I haven't actually tried blocking my home phone in it to try it out for myself, but supposedly what this app does is to send the caller directly to voice mail, just like the feature that's already available to us in the default contacts app. That's not quite what I'm looking for, as that means I will still get those annoying notifications and the voice mail inbox will (might) get clogged up.
Perhaps what I'm looking for is just not possible, but simply put I want an app that interceps an incoming call/text, cross-refs it against a black list, and if it's a match - mimics a red phone button press (decline)/refuse the text message - all within a few milliseconds. It would also be nice if it stopped the number from getting logged in the call log.

I'm pretty sure that what this application does is to receive the phone call (it may do half a ring) and immediately answer it and hang up. This should avoid the problem of sending it to voicemail.
i have been talking to the dev since release, the callers do NOT go to voicemail so it won't clog your voicemail manny.
also it cannot be used to block Unknown numbers so fo that you would need to write your app(i am trying but it is very hard to do when you don't know exactly what you are doing). but the dev claims that if you put in 1800 in the block box then it will block ALL 1800 numbers that call you. seems pretty good but i haven't been able to test it yet(crazy ex might have finally gotten the hint)
EDIT!! as soon as i posted this i got an update on it and now you are able to choose between unknown numbers or blacklisted numbers, i suggested checkboxes to select both, as well as text message block, but i am not sure how possible that would be

Really? I use the built in feature and I don't get a text when someone on my blocked list calls. It will show up in the call log but I don't get a text or notification unless they leave a VM.
where can i download? please?
I decided to start developing my own version..
^^^That is cool let us know, I am willing to test it. The developer has stopped updating this app.
Good to hear your making a new app. This one bugged me as it wouldnt block 1-800 type numbers..
Yes!
Joey3002 Please post it when completed. I cant find the other app anywhere. If you take paypal donations, I will send some $ after you post it. Thank You!

App to deliberately drop a call

I've been getting spam calls from a certain number. They're pretty annoying. I added the number to my contacts and set it to "always go to voicemail" so that the phone doesn't even ring, but then I still get a missed call message and a voicemail with half of the spam recording. I'd like to avoid that.
What I'm wondering is if there is a way to write an app to intercept an incoming call, check the number and if it matches, simply drop/end the call. I think the caller ID whitepages apps intercept an incoming call and look up the number so it must be possible.
I'm actually a pretty experienced Java programmer and have been looking for a cool android app to write, so I'd be happy to give this a shot. Just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction of an API and the right magic for the intent filters in the manifest to allow me to grab an incoming call. If I can get a hint in that direction, I think I can probably write the app.
I'd like it to be able to take a list of numbers or a wildcard pattern and either drop the call, forward the call to a specific number, etc. Just not sure what is actually possible to do programmatically. Can anyone familiar with the inner workings of android tell me what is even possible in this regard?
Thanks
You would need an app to answer the call then disconnect.
Drop/Reject call will go to whatever programmed divert is on your acct (voicemail)
I have an app for you, hell you dont even have to download it or install it.. its called the answer and end call button, for the sake of assuming people have below standard intelligence i will include a guide

Your profile doesn't show your area so I don't know if this is possible or not, but is there no do-not-call-list in your area? If there is, you might want to add your number.

Have you tried afirewall free off the android Market?
I appreciate what you're trying to do, but it might be easier just to report the spamming number to your provider's nuisance calls department as harassment (assuming you've asked them to stop calling or are on a no-call list).
If in the UK your provider should pursue the matter. I've reported a large number of persistent marketing / spam callers / texters over the years and had several companies shut down and fined (1 to the tune of £50k for repeatedly texting me).
If we were all to do this all the time, eventually the bottom would drop out of the market.

Yes, I called T-Mobile. The rep told me that there isn't anything I can do because the number isn't a proper 10 digit number, so they can't block it. I also reported it to the state (Massachusetts) and federal do-not-call sites but again got replies that there was nothing they could do to track down the caller without a valid phone number or correct company name.
Thanks for the tips -- I'll try afirewall or callwall!

that's a pretty dumb response. If someone is calling you 15 or 20 times consecutively, you don't want to have to answer/end a call every single time. An app would totally make life easier, and will probably try CallWall as well.
answer it, talk to them and request to be taken off of the call list, they legally have to do it and they will never call again, if its automated call the number back and request the same.
There are apps in Google Play
There're lots of apps solve the problem now.
Such as WhosCall, Mr Number, Call Blocker and so on. You can go to Google Play and download it, hope it is helpful for you.

Call Blocker Program?

What is the best call blocking program for the aria? It needs to have a whitelist to only allow people I specify to reach me. Thanks in advanced
Not exactly a direct solution on the Aria, but doesn't Google Voice allow you to filter calls? Again, I don't know about blocking.. but at the very least you can direct calls you don't want directly to voicemail.
i actually found this option today while going through my contacts. if you actually choose a contact and view his/her contact information. there is a menu down option to automatically send that person to voicemail whenever they call. i've already set a few to that option, but have yet to test it.

I tested it today, works GREAT!!! the phone doesn't even ring they just go right to VM
i use an app called Driodblock. there is a feature in it that tells you to block all calls except for your contacts (under scene mode). i think that is what you are looking for
i use it to block telemarketers or any unknown calls, which is what it's useful for. it does however tell you that the person called, but you dont hear the ring or anything, it goes straight to voicemail. you can also set it up so that that person gets hung up on so they dont get vmail LOL
the only problem is that if you search for droidblock in the market app, it doesnt show up. you have to search under "block calls" and it'll show up.
Yep, the two best ones are made by the same company:
Root Call Blocker (for general use):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.rootcallblocker.beta
Call Master (for advanced users):
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.blacklist
These are the only blockers that completely block everything without turning the screen on. Need to be rooted though.
I use the option under contacts if it's someone I would rather leave a voicemail than talk to.
I use an app called call filter for numbers where the caller id is unknown. It has additional options for blocking specific numbers, but I've never needed it.
I've registered my phone numbers on the national do not call registry. I don't get telemarketing calls. If I ever do receive one, I will go to that same site and report the number. I've only received two telemarketing calls in the past 4 years having my number registered there.
You could use blocking apps to help you
Some apps on the Google Play provide you esay ways to block the unwanted calls.
Such as WhosCall, Call Blcoker ,Mr Number, Caller ID and so on.
You could try it. But don't install all of them at once since it would make your phone slow.
I usually use WhosCall which can search the strange phone number and provide a easy way to block them.
Hope it could help you.
We make the two best ones - root call blocker and call master. Both in my sig. Enjoy.
