How are people feeling about the .7 update now that its rooted...
Guess I don't really want to go through ruu'ing my phone to get .7 and really re root if its not significantly better...
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
how do you root it?! I have it, sadly... and I've been without my froyo for days! its killing me.
Wow guys....run the RUU from How to root your Sprint Hero thread, go back to .5, root, and be done with it.
I am running a cutom rom would there be advatage to running the .7 and then rerooting and reinstalling the custom rom. I guess i just don't really understand the whole processes, but im trying

First of all...upgrading to 7 only to revert 5 makes no sense at all....and secondly, all I'm wondering if its worth updating to 7 and re rooting considering everything is fine the way it is...

theres a new root method that works with .7 that you do not have to go back to .5

Right, I get that...what I am wondering is if its worth doing all that extra work to have the .7 version

Links to the stock ROMS .6 & .7 Rooted
Its a little snappier and the dialer lag has been fixed, a few bugs worked out & i believe the lockscreen has changed. Thats about it. if you want to try it out here is a link to the .6 & .7 Rooted stock with wifi tethering installed.

Thanks..I think I will just go with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" point of view...

.7 update is the best update htc/sprint have given the hero. its fast, responsive.
That's basically what I was wondering....if the difference in 'snappiness' is worth running the ruu and re rooting.....perhaps never having had .6 I would notice the difference even more so?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Big question, did they fix the ring lag?
why would you do the .7 official update, to have to find a way to re-root when you can just use this rom that keeps root, has the update built in, and many extras that you would want in the first place.

I don't know if anyone else needs this but I did heres an update.zip for root on eugene373 2.2 rom run through clockwork.
mine already had root when I flashed it.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The rom already has root, you just need to install superuser from the market

Maybe I am just high, but not only is it rooted, but superuser is already installed. At least on the newest build. Eugene is really good about that kind of stuff.
When i flashed i lost my root for some reason and was unable to push the swype fix.
Use root explorer to copy/paste the Swyps files; works like a charm
Maybe you just lost the superuser.apk, i doubt you lost root...same thing happened to me but like i said just downloaded superuser from the market and problem solved

Hi guys.
I have my captivate running froyo. that's about all I know, though. I was hoping someone could tell me what rom I am running or distro I am running, because I am clueless. I have heard cognition is good, and if I can update to it without losing all my settings I will (assuming I dont have it now. I could, like i said, clueless.). Here is what my phone says in the about phone section:
Firmware version: 2.2
Model number SAMGSUNG-SGH-I897
Baseband version: I897UCJI6
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 jetaek.lee(at)sep-11 #1 (sorry for wording it this way, i could not post the topic with the at symbol because it thought it was an outside link)
Build Number: FROYO.UCJI6
ok, that's everything I think. Now, if someone can help me root this version, that's just dandy. If not, I would be willing to update to one that has a viable root availible for it already. I had eclair rooted before updating to froyo, and I miss my wifi tethering and backups.
Thank you in advance to anyone who offers help, I greatly appreciate it.
Hey I'm sorry I can't really help you, but I'm running the eclair rooted and I've been trying to get wifi tethering working but it just force closes everytime. If you could let me know how you were able to do it or point me in the right direction I'd be forever grateful.

You are on the original leak of froyo. I am not sure how to root it. If I were you I would back up all my apps using titanium backup, flash stock with odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Then look at flashing a 2.2 rom that us pre rooted
You can not flash a rom from the leaked version you are on

no offense taken, my reason for making a new thread was because I did not what version I was using, and therefore could not sort out what information was applicable. But, either way, thanks!
With a triumphant thrusting of both fists in to the air, losing my balance in my chair and falling to the ground upon seeing the little "superuser permissions" app after reboot, you have my eternal gratitude. Thank you so much!
Edit: oh crap... now my menu, home, back and search buttons do not work! any idea what I can do to fix this?
Not a problem. I am happy it worked out
edit. Try reboot. If that don't work an odin flash will do it but you will lose apps and settings

dernit. It did not work. well, at least i got it rooted, it's a good start. maybe i can figure it out
What did you do. it will suck but if you take your time you can get through. I would work toward getting titanium downloaded. You nasty have to reboot a couple of times.
I would get off of ever leaked froyo either way, if you are ever going to move to something else you will have to flash stock

im thinking I'm just going to go back to eclair, and root. I could do everything i wanted to on that, except for having flashplayer. so yeah. I guess, since all my contacts are synced with my gmail account, it's no big deal. i can re-do my home page and reinstall my apps thanks to appbrain. I mean, after all, it's just a phone.

before I start counting my chickens, let me wait for them to hatch. I've been following the directions for flashing back to 2.1, so i'll let you know how it goes.
Edit: It worked, now I just have to set up everything and re-install my apps. Thank you for your help, I'm just taking the "patience is a virtue" approach from now on haha. only thing I will really miss is the little arrow thing that makes it easier to pick a spot in a body of text. oh well
There is a basic no frills froyo rom in the developement section. I believe its ji6 optimized or something like that. It comes with 2e recovery and root access built in. Sorry I just log off my computer otherwise I would post you links. But backup with tibu. And take a look at that rom in the developement section. You will need rom manager from the market. But after downloading ji6 optimized, copy to your internal sd card. Then open rom manager and select install rom from zip. Select the froyo rom and follow instructions. You will then have a rooted froyo minus att bloat with flash.
I would give more detail but I have thumb cramps now lol. But tomorrow I can help if u need it.
Since upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.3, I've lost the root access I had on Froyo. I used the RageAgainstTheCage method before and found that worked well. I could easily re-root after each update to Froyo, but it doesn't work now that I have updated to Gingerbread.
Is there a 1-Click Root or something fairly simple, similar to RageAgainstTheCage perhaps, that I can use to root my device without unlocking the bootloader??
I've heard some people mention Ginger Break?
Thanks, Steve.
No.
Whatever 'Gingerbreak' is is unreleased yet, apparently the dev wants a few more devices in the wild first.
Simple? Sure...
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
So if my bootloader is unlocked what else do I have to do at that point, push a custom recovery? I was under the impression that none had been updated for 2.3 on the nexus one yet.

Recovery is version independent. Flash one, then use it to flash ChainsDD's su files.
Yup, flash a new recovery, then use the recovery to flash on the su update file
Alright cool thanks, didn't want to come off as ignorant on the matter but to be honest sometimes it feels like getting detailed information is kinda tough with all the threads that get created on the same subject and how large some of them get.

Reports I've read indicate that the rageagainstthecage exploit doesn't work for 2.3.3.
If the soft-root exploits don't work on 2.3.3, simply downgrade to a 2.2 version, soft-root it, install a custom recovery and then flash a root 2.3.3 ROM...
I'm not completely certain, but I don't think you can downgrade either. At least I've not heard of anyone succeeding with the passimg approach yet...

Affirmative downgrade is possible!!!
Anyone need help????
but if i downgrade to 2.2.2 and root the n1 while its in 2.2.2. Wont it come out of root when I put the stock 2.3.3 on. Atleast for me the whole reason I went to 2.2.2 is so i can get the stock verison of gingerbread. I do want to root my phone but I dont wanna use a different rom as of now I wanna keep the stock verison of gingerbrad that I got from google. I guess my real question is without the ramble, Once I downgrade and root the Phone wont I lose root once I put the stock 2.3.3
Just install a pre-rooted stock 2.3.3...

I have successfully downgraded from stock GRI40 to FRG33 (via PASSIMG), rooted, flashed custom recovery and finally flashed a stock rooted GRI40.
Congrats!

My girlfriend has the Captivate but is annoyed with how it runs. Buggy, laggy, battery etc. I told her she has 2 options, either get the official 2.2 update or have me put in Serendipity 6.3 for her. Problem she wants Serendipity but for whatever reason, she doesn't want me to root her... smh! Does an android phone need to be rooted in order to be flashed?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It doesn't HAVE to be rooted, you can just put the clockwork recovery update.zip on sd card, reinstall packages twice and flash the rom
That being said...you would need to root before flashing to use titanium backup to backup all her stuffs. Also any custom rom will be rooted after the flash.
If she doesn't want root at all seems like shes going with the official update...
Thanks a million! Appreciate it!

Remember to laugh at her when she decides she hates stock and doesn't mind rooting to get serendipity.
If she thinks 2.1 is laggy and buggy, her updating to 2.2 will be just the ticket you need for a green light on root and new rom.
