.7 update - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How are people feeling about the .7 update now that its rooted...
Guess I don't really want to go through ruu'ing my phone to get .7 and really re root if its not significantly better...

how do you root it?! I have it, sadly... and I've been without my froyo for days! its killing me.

Wow guys....run the RUU from How to root your Sprint Hero thread, go back to .5, root, and be done with it.

I am running a cutom rom would there be advatage to running the .7 and then rerooting and reinstalling the custom rom. I guess i just don't really understand the whole processes, but im trying

First of all...upgrading to 7 only to revert 5 makes no sense at all....and secondly, all I'm wondering if its worth updating to 7 and re rooting considering everything is fine the way it is...

theres a new root method that works with .7 that you do not have to go back to .5

Right, I get that...what I am wondering is if its worth doing all that extra work to have the .7 version

Links to the stock ROMS .6 & .7 Rooted
Its a little snappier and the dialer lag has been fixed, a few bugs worked out & i believe the lockscreen has changed. Thats about it. if you want to try it out here is a link to the .6 & .7 Rooted stock with wifi tethering installed.

Good Luck

Thanks..I think I will just go with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" point of view...

.7 update is the best update htc/sprint have given the hero. its fast, responsive.

That's basically what I was wondering....if the difference in 'snappiness' is worth running the ruu and re rooting.....perhaps never having had .6 I would notice the difference even more so?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

Big question, did they fix the ring lag?

why would you do the .7 official update, to have to find a way to re-root when you can just use this rom that keeps root, has the update built in, and many extras that you would want in the first place.

root 1.5 or 2.1

Edit
I fixed this
They're both about the same level of difficulty to root. If you root the 1.5 you won't have access to some of the newer apps in the market. Personally I'd go with the 2.1 and root it. Make sure the last number of the build number of the RUU your using is .5 and not .6 or else you can't root. If you need a rooting guide e-mail me and ill send you a link to the one I used.

Well I have no intentions of using a stock rom. Thought maybe it would be easier to root from 1.5
IMO, root the 1.5, then you can flash a 2.1 ROM and have the ability to return to 1.5 if you so desire.
Thanks guys, got it done and happier then ever! Sure wish I would have done this six months ago! It's a whole new level of phone!

Are you serious? Build #s ending in .6 can't be rooted?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
but you can run the .5 ruu and root your phone after the .6 on it.
So it can be done? I just got mine today with .6 pre installed
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Yes it can be done. Read the guide in the dev forum. It doesn't take long.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Thanx..I'll try there
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
You just have to run the .5 ruu which you can find downloads of around. the .6 one is the patched version that does not allow root so you just have to run the .5 ruu first is all. No biggie.

Rooting then upgrading to froyo

The post is gonna he quick cause I'm at work...I have my phone rooted with the update.zip file method..when 2.2 comes out,I will be upgrading, bit will I lose root? And if so, will the update.zip or the one click root work.
I know the one click root desont support 2.2 by d just thought I'd ask.
Thanks

There is really no way to know since none of us have Froyo. Chances are the dev's will have to figure out how to re-root the phone.

Sense Rom??

Sorry for an obvious stupid question to some, but hoping someone can save me a lot of reading.
I have been on the Evo for a while and have just sold my Hero. It is rooted and I would like to put on the Latest Greatest Closest to stock rom I can without loosing root and so wireless tether will work.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I didn't see a link for a stock rom on the dev forum.
Just root your stock... that should do it.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Gingerbread-on-Hero action here!
Yea, was thinking about that. Will have to re-learn how to root the Hero.
Don't you need a custom kernel to wireless tether due to netfilters? I don't believe you can with stock kernel.

Or run Nfinite's latest rom. It's latest stock rom with extras.

[Q] Nexus One 2.3.3 Gingerbread, Simple Root?

Since upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.3, I've lost the root access I had on Froyo. I used the RageAgainstTheCage method before and found that worked well. I could easily re-root after each update to Froyo, but it doesn't work now that I have updated to Gingerbread.
Is there a 1-Click Root or something fairly simple, similar to RageAgainstTheCage perhaps, that I can use to root my device without unlocking the bootloader??
I've heard some people mention Ginger Break?
Thanks, Steve.
No.
Whatever 'Gingerbreak' is is unreleased yet, apparently the dev wants a few more devices in the wild first.
Simple? Sure...
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
So if my bootloader is unlocked what else do I have to do at that point, push a custom recovery? I was under the impression that none had been updated for 2.3 on the nexus one yet.

same problem with me.. waiting for simple one..

Recovery is version independent. Flash one, then use it to flash ChainsDD's su files.
Yup, flash a new recovery, then use the recovery to flash on the su update file
Alright cool thanks, didn't want to come off as ignorant on the matter but to be honest sometimes it feels like getting detailed information is kinda tough with all the threads that get created on the same subject and how large some of them get.

Reports I've read indicate that the rageagainstthecage exploit doesn't work for 2.3.3.
If the soft-root exploits don't work on 2.3.3, simply downgrade to a 2.2 version, soft-root it, install a custom recovery and then flash a root 2.3.3 ROM...
I'm not completely certain, but I don't think you can downgrade either. At least I've not heard of anyone succeeding with the passimg approach yet...

That's me
It'd be great to have GingerBreak released. Please?
Looks like downgrade is possible for some, while others are struggling...

Affirmative downgrade is possible!!!
Anyone need help????
but if i downgrade to 2.2.2 and root the n1 while its in 2.2.2. Wont it come out of root when I put the stock 2.3.3 on. Atleast for me the whole reason I went to 2.2.2 is so i can get the stock verison of gingerbread. I do want to root my phone but I dont wanna use a different rom as of now I wanna keep the stock verison of gingerbrad that I got from google. I guess my real question is without the ramble, Once I downgrade and root the Phone wont I lose root once I put the stock 2.3.3
Just install a pre-rooted stock 2.3.3...

Here I am!
I have successfully downgraded from stock GRI40 to FRG33 (via PASSIMG), rooted, flashed custom recovery and finally flashed a stock rooted GRI40.
Congrats!
I did actually correct myself later...

Root and Flashing.... need help please!

My girlfriend has the Captivate but is annoyed with how it runs. Buggy, laggy, battery etc. I told her she has 2 options, either get the official 2.2 update or have me put in Serendipity 6.3 for her. Problem she wants Serendipity but for whatever reason, she doesn't want me to root her... smh! Does an android phone need to be rooted in order to be flashed?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It doesn't HAVE to be rooted, you can just put the clockwork recovery update.zip on sd card, reinstall packages twice and flash the rom
That being said...you would need to root before flashing to use titanium backup to backup all her stuffs. Also any custom rom will be rooted after the flash.
If she doesn't want root at all seems like shes going with the official update...
Thanks a million! Appreciate it!

Remember to laugh at her when she decides she hates stock and doesn't mind rooting to get serendipity.
If she thinks 2.1 is laggy and buggy, her updating to 2.2 will be just the ticket you need for a green light on root and new rom.
