Plz help forum geniuses
Definitely not a genius, but I have upgraded my SD card before without problem. I don't use switchrom, so I can't verify that part. For the rest of it make sure you do a BART/NANDROID backup from recovery, including the ext partition if you have one. These files will reside on the FAT32 part of the card.
With a card reader on a PC you can select all and copy everything to an empty folder somewhere. Either format the new card on the PC for FAT32 if you don't need any other partitions, or from RA recovery on the phone if you need ext or swap. Copy all the contents to the new card on the PC and do a restore from recovery for the ext stuff. You may want to wait for one of the guys that use switchrom to verify this method will work for you.
Thaanks for the info oldnoob but is it possible for u or anyone else to show me how to this with clockwork recovery I would prefer a step by step or if someone can post a video link or a link to a thread thanks and sry for being so demanding

So i ordered a new Class 6 SD Card.
Before this i was on the stock 1GB SD card that came with the G1 with an ext2 partition, and running the latest Cyan mod.
Basically i was just wondering what i need to do when my new card comes. I know i need to partition it to FAT32, and then i was gonna do ext3, and a linux swap. Can i just use sdparted script to do this?
And finally i was gonna try a Hero rom now that i have the SD card that is actually capable of running it. I push it with adb and just flash after partitioning, right?
Is there any way of getting my apps back or am i going to have reinstall everything again? I don't REALLY mind doing all over again, but it'd be nice not to have to. And if it's possible, how?
Thanks for any help/clarification...
dear ally,
there is a app that allows you to back up apps..
p.s. i apologize im not a native speaker..of how do u say..umm ur motherlan
Yes.
First re-partition the card using parted from the recovery menu or using the Amon-Ra Recovery. There are instructions for that littered everywhere in the Q&A and the Developer's forum, just use the search.
To use the Hero ROMs you need to flash the Danger SPL unless you plan on using MicroHero with HardSPL. If you want to use any of the new Hero ROMs they will require the Danger SPL and note the bold. Look up the proper instructions for flashing the SPL before actually diving in.
And no. You don't need to re-install everything. Just use switchrom or BART to make a backup as it will also make a backup of your ext partition. After backing up, just restore it after transferring everything from the FAT32 partition of your old sdcard to the new one.
I just checked and i have 1.33.2005 SPL. I believe that's the correct one, right?
I just tried to push Bart to system/sd...i'm pretty sure i did it right but when i try to store my ext it says it can't open the file.
What am i doing wrong?

Thank you very much...that seems to have worked
I really like this recovery image too
No problem man, glad to have helped.
Download Amon_Ra's new recovery image and look for the 3 way partition option...once partioned, do a data wipe, drag and drop your rom of choice in .zip format onto the root of your sd card and rename it to "update"
Backup for Root users works well for restoring your apps. it can be found in the marketplace. I believe there is a donate version and a free version.
I have had my g1 for about a year now and I rooted it a few months ago. I've been trying to update the rom but everytime I try to format the sd card on my pc it says no disk found in drive F. I have tried it on other computers. I tried it via usb and a card reader. When I put update.zip into the root folder it says it cant find it. Please someone help! I need my phone to be amazing again!
Is the card formatted in Fat32?
Yeah its formatted to Fat32
you have to assign the a sd card a drive letter.
assign the sd card a drive letter.
How do I do this?
Well I just assigned it a letter and the same thing happens. I really am stuck.
What are you trying to update from? What update are you trying to apply? What recovery are you using? Do you have a file manager on your phone like androzip? If you can answer some questions, you may have a few workarounds....

You could try doin it with your phone (since you said you're rooted) using recovery
If you're using Cyanogen's recovery there's a good guide on androidandme.com
http://bit.ly/61CXFo
If you're using Amon_Ra's recovery I think it's automated, I've never used it before but from what I understand the you have the option to do it from the recovery menu
I'm currently running cyanogen mod 4.1.11.1 I'm not sure of the recovery image and I am trying to update to the next version of cyanogen. I think it might be a problem with my phone :S I really dont know. I have looked online and nothing seems to work I can put any update onto the sd card but when I try to update on my phone it says the file doesnt exist
it should say what recovery you are using in the recovery screen.
connect to wifi spot, download the new amon ra recovery, and move it from the download folder to the root of the sdcard using androzip (from the market).
follow the steps to flash the new recovery in the amon thread.
the next steps from there are up to you.....you can try to repartion your card using the menu option in recovery and then try to mount your g1 to your computer in the recovery menu. the recovery will allow you to choose what size partitions you want (fat32, ext, and swap) and do all of it for you. very handy.
once you get it to mount to your computer, you're in business.
if you think your card is ok as is, you could always download the htc file and cm4.2.6 directly to your g1, move them from download folder to sd root, wipe everything and flash.
either way, if you run into problems with your card, you maybe without phone until you get a good card.
good luck
Hey thanks for the great replies. Still no luck though I downloaded the amon ra recovery image and did what it said but when on the terminal emulator I type mount -a and it says 'mounting /dev/block/mmcb1k0p2 om /system/sd failed: no such file or directory'
Bump! PLEASE HELP ME
Ok so I rooted and flashed the recovery image. Now I want to apply the MoDaCo Custom Hero ROM. Whats the easiest way to partition the SD card to allow apps2SD?
When I was in the recovery mode there were partition options can it from there or do I have to go on the desktop and use the cmd prompt?
Just use the partition option in recovery.
Thank you for the quick response
hmmm apps2sd is not working. I got the Rom to work fine but before i flashed the rom I partitioned fat32+ext2+swap in the recovery screen so I can have apps2sd access and it does not work
Ok got the Apps2sd to work, but how can I see both partitions. I can't can only see the update.zip folder, footprints. and some other file but my music and photos are nowhere to be found and the Nanodroid back up. I did copy the nanodroid back up to my phone, but should it still be there on the main partition? Help please.

As should be obvious, partitioning the sdcard erased what was there.
2 things
1. Windows won't see that EXT3 Partition, it's not support by Microsoft.
2. The format to FAT SWAP EXT wipes the ENTIRE CARD, nandroid backups included.
I do an Nandroid anytime I go to mess with something in Shell or load a ZIP. Here in the past few days it seems like I do 2 or 3 a day lol.
More than likely you have a card larger than 2 gigs and the backups seem to be realativly small. I copy all of mine to a folder on my computer and Rename them with a small descript of the Rom build and Date. So I know what it is I can load back.
Hey Guys. I have a rooted Nexus One running CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC0-N1-KANG. Sometime back I had my SD card connected to my PC via a memory card reader. I was deleting a video file but while the file was being deleted, my SD card got unmounted. I have no idea as to what happened but now it looks like I have considerable part of that space lost.
I did scan my SD card using Windows disk check but it found no errors. Now I am thinking of formatting my SD card. I have a 1 GB EXT3 partitioned 16 GB Sandisk SD card. Most of my apps are installed on the SD card. Which is the best way to format my SD card? Also I do have Rom Manager & Titanium Backup installed. How can I ensure that I back up all my data and do an easy restore? Alternately is there any way I can recover the lost space without formatting?
Any help will be greatly appreciated
there are some programs out there to retrieve lost disk data--i have not used any but a search may help
i bu all sdcard to pc then reformat with sdformatter with full erase and size adj ON, then repartition inside phone--0 swap
nandroid first
Thanks for replying rugmankc. Do you have a direct link to sdformatter? Also do you use rom manager for the partitioning? In case if I do backup my entire rom and then format my sd card, can I simply restore everything by loading up the backup? Can you give me some simple step by step procedure of backup & format? Thanks again for your help.
Sd formatter: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/eula_windows
Nandroid backup
Backup to pc
Format sd card
Create partition (either wid pc or in recovery)
Copyback to sd card
PS: hv read ppl complaining abt rom manager aka cwm creating bad partitions.

Hey n1newbie. Thanks a lot for your reply. Sorry for being noobish but which is the best way to make a Nandroid backup and how can I partition with PC and recovery? Also once I copy back the backup on to my sd card, how do I restore the backup?
sorry for my late reply--nite here
i use this one--but shouldn't matter--just make sure you use full erase on and size adj on--you want complete format, not partial as phone does
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28338566/SDFormatter 2.0.mht
the steps n1newbie gave you are good ones
i use amonra so don't know cwr steps
the partition steps are done inside phone for me, as i mentioned, thru recovery and should be straight forward, including steps to bu and restore
there is no best way to nandroid an that term/folder won't be seen in cwr, just cw backups. the options should all be there in cw or rom mgr, including restore
i bu sdcard regularly and titanium too
Hi y2jamit, its a pleasure to help u
Choosing recovery is ur preference (clockworkmod,amonra,4ext)
As rugmankc said, Making a nandroid backup and restoring is done via recovery mode and is jus straight forward. Remember to use the same recovery for safer side
To format in PC try any partition tools (mini tool parition wizard )

rugmankc & n1newbie, I really appreciate your help guys. Thank for making this so much more easier. I guess I now have the confidence to take the plunge
good luck
just read a lot on whatever you do so you have a good idea on it and then you can ask specific questions on the process--
ICS is still alpha so fairly unstable for a lot

previus stock rom using the nandroid backup.....so i copied the backup file and only this from my laptop to sc card. I started the phone in
recovery
i did the restore and hit reboot....on the reboot the phone stayed on the lg logo screen!!!! i tryied to restore again but nothing....every time i start the phone
stays at the lg logo screen.....of course i cant reinstall cyanogemod using zip file from sd card because i did that format on sd remember? Thats

As far as I know CyanogenMod uses the ext4 filesystem. That would mean that you'd have to convert your phone back to an ext3 system.
You can find a ZIP-file for doing so here [sorry, can't post links yet];
modaco.com/topic/336318-11-nov-r2-backtoext3-for-converting-your-device-er-back-to-ext3/
Put it on your SD-card, flash it and restore your backup once again. It should work if your backup isn't corrupt.

I still think that you have to convert your current ext4 filesystem to ext3. I've had a similar problem once until I realized that CM uses ext4 and my previous ROM (stock) isn't ext4. After the conversion and the restoration everything worked fine again.
Don't you have a micro-SD adapter? Those things are pretty damn useful. Get one, they're not even expensive.
Get that adapter, put your micro SD in it, copy the ext3 conversion ZIP onto your micro sdcard, take it out of the adapter and then put it in your phone. Boot into the recovery, install ZIP from sdcard and then choose the ZIP that you put on your sdcard a minute ago. Let it do the work and wait until it finishes. Once it finishes just restore your nandroid backup and it should work perfectly fine again.
