LET ME MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR - MOST OF YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO ACCESS DOWNLOAD MODE OR RECOVERY VIA HARDWARE BUTTONS....
BUT NEWER PHONES SEEM TO HAVE HARDWARE ACCESS DISABLED.. THIS IS A WORKAROUND FOR THESE LOCKED OUT PHONES...
THERE IS NOW A ODIN FLASHABLE FIX FOR H/W LOCKED PHONES
SEE THIS THREAD - THANK YOU untermensch
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
METHOD 1: ACCESSING DOWNLOADER/RECOVERY:
(if the following directions do not work... then your phone may be locked out from using hardware buttons to access downloader/recovery)
Download Mode:
With the phone powered off
Plug in the USB cable.
Turn the phone on it's side and use both thumbs to hold (left thumb) Vol Up and (right thumb) Vol Down
Press and hold the power button with your right index finger til you see "Virbant" release the power button and it should say Downloading.
Recovery Mode:
With the phone powered off
UnPlug the USB cable.
Turn the phone on it's side and use both thumbs to hold (left thumb) Vol Up and (right thumb) Vol Down
Press and hold the power button with your right index finger til you see "Virbant" release the power button and it should be on the recovery screen.
METHOD 2: STUCK AT VIBRANT SCREEN:
(and are not able to use vol+ vol- methods to access downloader/recovery)
You will need the samsung ADB drivers installed for your phone as well as ADB...
ACCESS DOWNLOAD MODE
1) remove back cover and take our sim card and sd-card.
2) take out the battery
3) hold ALL 3 buttons down at the same time. (Vol +, Vol -, Power)
4) while holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in
5) continue holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears... once it reappears, release all 3 buttons
6) Setup ODIN and get it all setup and ready... (if you are flashing your phone via odin)
6) now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable
7) open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type ADB REBOOT DOWNLOAD
8) Your phone will reboot into the download screen... go back to ODIN - A com port should now appear for your phone...
9) Click start and wait for your phone to do its thing
ACCESS STOCK RECOVERY
1) remove back cover and take our sim card and sd-card.
2) take out the battery
3) hold ALL 3 buttons down at the same time. (Vol +, Vol -, Power)
4) while holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in
5) continue holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears... once it reappears, release all 3 buttons
6) now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable
7) open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type ADB REBOOT RECOVERY
8) Your phone will reboot into the stock recovery and flash whatever update.zip you need
METHOD 3: STUCK AT PHONE ! COMPUTER:
Plug in the USB cable.
Turn the phone on it's side and use both thumbs to hold Vol Up and Vol Down
Press and hold the power button with your right index finger.
The screen will go black, continue holding.
The screen will come back on, you'll see the same Phone to Computer icon
Continue holding, the screen will go black
The screen will come back on, you should see "Vibrant" release the power button and you it should go into Downloading
METHOD 4: STUCK AT PHONE ! COMPUTER:
(and are not able to use vol+ vol- methods to access downloader/recovery)
CALL TMOBILE AND BEG FOR THEM TO REPLACE UR PHONE..
METHOD 5: ODIN ERROR - ODIN HANGTHANKS EUGENE363)
When you can't get into Download MOde....
assuming you just got a Hang in ODIN Flasher...
1. Un-plug usb from Phone ( But still plugged into the Computer )
2. Pull Battery
3. Let the Phone sit for 15 to 30 seconds
4. Plug in USB to Both Phone & PC if not already
5. Hold Both Volume Buttons
6. Put Battery in while still holding Volume Buttons.
My Phone is HW Locked as well, with a v1 board.
every-time I get odin hang, doing the above always results in letting me re-flash.
Interesting! I'll give it a try.
UPDATE: I have successfully reflashed my vibrant... now I will reinsert the SD card and SIM card... and back in business!!!
I am 100% positive my phone was a newer "locked" model... I was unable to access the downloader OR the stock recovery and out of frustration.. I figured out how to access ADB and reboot my phone into downloader or stock recovery!
Hope this works for everyone!
For those of you that just want to test this method out... it does not seem to work for me now that my phone boots past the vibrant screen.... this method only seems to work if you are STUCK at the vibrant screen...

I wonder if this will work for people that are stuck at the computer ! screen... I am unable to get to download mode or recovery with the vol. buttons. tried all the methods that i can find in the forum.
That sucks... give my method a try play around with it... follow the guide.... see if the computer ! screen flashes... if it flashes.. release all three buttons when the computer ! screen reappears and see if it shows up when you connect the USB cable and type adb devices

Oh, I don't have the problem. I'm just thinking if this will work for it. This is the main reason why i'm not messing with different roms/firmware until i can figure out a sure way to get into download if anything would to go wrong. As of right now, i'm just rooted and running Vibrant6. Will not go any further until i figure out the download mode on these newer batch.

This actually does not work for me. I have to 1) Pull the battery to make sure the phone is off, 2) Put it back in, 3) plug into USB, and immediately press and hold vol up/down.
Or ADB Reboot Download, but only sometimes.

If you are about to immediately press and hold up/down you are clearly not using a locked phone... and believe me.. this method works.... i tested it out about 10 different times trying to make the how to as easy as possible... if you are STUCK at the vibrant screen... how were you accessing ADB?
LIKE I SAID... This seems to only work for phones that wont boot past the VIBRANT screen.. My phone is locked out of hardware access to downloading mode and recovery... If you arent locked out of hardware access... then this would be a pretty irrelevant GUIDE..
Here is what makes me believe I am locked out of hardware access... when I follow any of the tutorials on how to access download mode... my phone just flashes and goes back to the vibrant screen... or back to the battery.... it NEVER does anything else...
can anyone confirm that that is what happens with "locked" phones?
I have seen a few posts... in this thread as well as the general Q & A thread .. regarding people having this exact same problem... and having to take their phone back to t-mo to swap it out..
Heh seems like a lot of work. Here's what I normally do and always get into the desired mode.

Yes... my method seems difficult... BUT IT IS ALSO FOR NEWER VIBRANT PHONES THAT CANNOT ACCESS DOWNLOAD OR RECOVERY VIA YOUR METHOD OR ANYONE ELSES METHOD... because t-moble disabled hardware access...
That is exactly what happens with my phone. Either reboots or goes to the battery screen.

Well hopefully between your method and mine.... nobody should have a problem accessing the downloader.... I have tried your method about 15 times with zero success accessing downloader or recovery... and I am pretty savvy... not sure what the differences are between our phones...

I just got new Vibrant and everything works fine. No need for any of that.....just have to hold volume buttons and release power button at the exact specific time with usb pluged in, phone goes straght to download mode.
RIP vibrant
just tried this method, and it didn't work for me. My Vibrant has the phone-!-computer error and it's the newer phone that doesn't load to recovery/dl mode via hard keys. I so happened to be loading a rom using odin and unplugged it because the process didn't show a status bar, it basically sat there doing nothing. Once i unplugged the phone it showed nothing but that error message on power up, hardreboot, charging ect. Thanks, tmo for locking hardkey recovery mode =(

had this happen twice and those steps worked for me both times:
"have your usb in, press down both the volume up/down toggle and the power button.... hold them until the screen goes black and as soon as it does, let go only the power button and it should appear there again
however, i found out that you need to take out the battery and get into download mode freshly again...."

This is exactly what I do on my phone. Actually had to do all three of this last weekend when I made a bonehead move and damn near bricked my phone. ODIN and Titanium backup saved my bacon.
I still do not fully understand this whole disabled recovery access thing. Has Samsung acknowledged it as a bug or a new permanent change? I heard they were going to fix it in the Froyo release?
I am unsure of what phones are locked and which ones arent... its kind of weird that some phones are locked out... my question for Eugene or JAC...
Is it possible to take an unlocked phone... and flash everything over to a locked phone... "unlocking it" so that the hardware buttons work?
and by unlocked I mean... able to access downloader/recovery via hardware buttons...
Those of you that ended up on the Phone ! Computer screen... if your phone is hardware locked... you are screwed... the method I originally posted only works if your phone will at least boot to the Vibrant screen (and have a hardware locked phone)
If your phone is not hardware locked... you can follow the millions of posts telling you how they access download mode... no need to follow my guide
Recently, I bricked my phone due to the hardware recovery/download feature being disabled.
Sitting here waiting (for 3 days) for the prepaid UPS return sticker from TMo I had a thought...
What if TMo/Samsung did not actually lock some of these phones down.
Follow along...
In the past, every single phone that I have ever owned would power up via USB connection (from the wall) even if the battery was not installed.
Tonight I noticed that my Vibrant will not power up unless the battery is installed.
USB (from PC) - Battery = No Power
USB (from wall) - Battery = No Power
Battery +/- USB (any) = Phone--!--PC icon
If someone who has a fully functional Vibrant (hardware recovery/download feature works) could try this out?
I'm curious to see if this is a possible pattern...
People keep saying to hold power in some way or another to get to download mode... You dont need to ever touch the power button!
Turn phone off, plug usb into computer, hold both volume buttons in and plug usb into phone. It will instantly go into download mode.

So.... Been playing with this for the last two days trying to root this phone.
I've rooted a few other phones, so I do have experience with the overall process, but I am unable to even boot this phone into Recovery. I have tried booting into recovery by holding down both volume buttons + power and from adb terminal "adb reboot recovery."
Neither method works. The phone will boot (or reboot from adb) and brings up the "at&t World Phone" screen and then nothing else appears. The first time I tried this it actually wouldn't boot up even after pulling the battery and trying to start normally, it still sat at the same screen. I let it sit all day today at the screen until the battery died. I was finally able to get it to boot up earlier.
If anyone can help, that'd be greatly appreciated. Let me know what info I need to add.
I usually just press and hold both volume buttons and power then release just the power button and keeping the volume buttons still pushed on the 2nd time the white at&t screen pops up... Works for me every time.

hold volume up+down and power key btw this is wrong section to post supposed to be in general
Oh sorry, didn't realize it was supposed to be posted in general.
I've tried the Volume Up/Down + Power and this does not work, as I stated originally.
I've also tried to do it from the adb shell, which also does not work.
Does anyone have any idea why I can't access recovery?
I"m having a similar issue. Holding volume up+down and power and releasing in any combination just boots the phone up. If I just hold volume up+down and power the phone alternates between the AT&T World Phone screen endless.
Yes u have to let go of the pwr button when the phone screen turns on
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I've tried just about every combination of the Volume Up/Down + Power and no luck.
I've also tried the following ADB commands, with no luck, it just reboots the phone:
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot-boatloader
When I hold Volume Down + Power I get the a Yellow Triangle with a Android guy with a shove with the text "Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!"
When I hold Volume Up + Power I get an Android guy with the following text: "POWER RESET or UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE"
For kicks, I tried to to flash a rooted update.zip via the Volume Down + Power way with the Samsung update software, the same way I have done with the Samsung Moment. Wasn't sure if it'd work, but worth a try.
Any one else have any ideas or suggestions?
Phishie, do you have a final release version? Or anything special about the phone you have?
I just press the two volume buttons first (to make sure theyre pressed before you hit power), then press the power button, as soon as the screen turns on, I let go of everything and it works just fine, no need to have ridiculously complicated instructions.
The trick is to make sure both volume buttons are pressed BEFORE you hit power. Then release. Easy as pie
Also, if you guys are having too much trouble, just download the one click root/unroot. It will run, boot your phone into recovery, then all you have to do is scroll to install packages with volume key and hit power. Done.
Trust me, I am making sure I'm pretty the keys completely. I've literally tried it fifty times by now.
And I've also tried the One Click Root. This does not boot the phone into recovery either. It just sits at the AT&T World Phone screen forever and will actually get stuck here and will not boot up normal even by pulling the battery and powering it back up. It'll just get stuck at the for-mentioned screen. I have to connect it to adb and reboot it there to get it out of the loop it's stuck in.
that doesnt sound good. Maybe you need to try a factory reset? are you running stock rom and everything?
When I first got the phone I did a factory reset.
Yea, it's completely stock to my knowledge. But I have a different ROM than the final release version that everyone else has. This is a pre-production device.
same problem
I try all the combos as well, no luck, would the combos be different for 2e vs 3e recovery?
I try combo, it powers on, the same thing happens, the at-t comes up, goes for a second, then screen brightens, wait a bit and then the home row buttons light up, hangs there... doesnt matter which kernel or which rom I flash, same thing, adb and other stuff wont work as they need usb debugging enabled, which mine isn't.
Is there a way to mod the phone files and flash to enable usb debugging? Anyway to remap the buttons to 2 button vs 3 button?
Everyone post your methods for entering recovery please?
I was upgrading to Cog 9.1 using 2e recovery and I think my captivate is now bricked. It does not display anything (only black screen). Even after connecting to USB I do not see the battery charging symbol. Is there anyway out of this mode?
I have tried all the different key combos to try to get into download mode. I could always get into download mode earlier using down button + power button combo.
Any pointer will be very helpful.
How did you flash, and when did you realize there was an issue
Captivate
Cog 2.2
I flashed using ROM manager and I realised the issue after the screen remained black for around 30 mins.

the volume buttons and power combo are used to put it in recovery. Mine got stuck on the at&t logo. I pulled the battery after about 40 minutes, turned it on into recovery, wiped my data, rebooted, then worked flawlessly. My advice -> pull battery, put it back in, hold volume buttons, then connect the usb while continuing to hold up/down volume buttons, this should get you into download mode.

This sounds like i9000 rom button combo. Won't work with COG. For recovery hold both volume buttons and hold power button in. When at&t logo shows up, wait about a second and release the power button but continue to hold the vol. buttons. Should get you there.
For download, hold volume buttons down and plug in usb. Should put ya right there.
If you have a cappy that has the no buttons bug, you're pretty much hosed.
Designgears has a thread in the development section about the 3 button issue, with a mod that fixes it. Give it a read.
If you had usb debugging enabled and the computer sees the phone, you should be able to use adb to reboot recovery or download too.
OK, I've been reading here for 6 days all manner of Captivate unbricking. Here is my story...
I picked up a Captivate on the Rogers network. I connected it to my email server (Exchange 2010) with no problems, poked around, noticed the lag, noticed the SMS time issue, then promptly rooted, installed clockwork, and then threw cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.3. Quite frankly I was shocked at how much faster it was.
Anyways, after a day of poking around, I could not get my email to my exchange server running (tried the email.pak floating about), so I actually decided I was going to go back to the backup I made of my phone using clockwork before I installed cognition. When I restored my backup, I thought I had bricked my phone.
I let it rest for a day, then came back here, and found one of the 3-4 different variations of the 4 button download mode combo that permitted me to do the 1 click restore. This restored me to the AT&T version of 2.1. It worked, but was less than desirable.
I decided that at that point I really wanted to go back to stock, so I downloaded the stock backup on the Rogers Captivate wiki page, and did the restore using clockwork. The phone has not been the same since.
When i turn it on, I get an at&t splash screen, then in about 20 seconds I get the at&t "jingle", but the splash screen stays on. I can't seem to find any key combination that will permit me to get back into download mode so I can restore using the One Click that worked for me the first time. I have tried:
1. 3 button salute with USB in first, battery out initially.
2. 3 button salute with USB plugged in *as* I was inserting the battery.
3. Power and volume down (both with and without USB, and with battery being plugged in after USB and "during" insertion of battery)
4.Power and volume up with same combo's as #3.
5. Just volume up and volume down with same combo's as #3.
In all cases Odin was running before USB connected, running as administrator. I'm running 64bit windows, but I'm sure I have the correct drivers because I did this the first time with Odin and download mode and I haven't added or changed anything. But just for arguements sake I did uninstall, and then install the drivers again.
Any combination of power and volume buttons just gives me a battery charging logo. Occasionally when holding up until the second black screen I will get a quick indication that the computer might see something, but it dissappears withing a handful of seconds showing it promptly removed.
I'm downloading the Android SDK in the hopes that when I get the normal at&t splash screen after the "jingle" that something might actually be running in the background and maybe I can adb reboot download it but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyone seen this that has managed to get out of it? I'm starting to think the "unbrickable captivate" can be bricked. Assuming it is bricked, short of taking it back, is there anyone on the internet that can jtag these and in some fashion bring back to life?
Cheers,
Tim

and download mode is easy.
1. start odin3 and have data cable plugged into the computer
2. insert proper files if needed
3. hold volume up and volume down for 2 sec (no power button needed) then insert usb cable, continue to hold volumes till either the download mode screen pops up or odin3 sees the phone(if you bork the phone bad enough you can corrupt the download mode image, i did it with the not to successfull manhatten project kernel) but despite the screen being black it very well may be in download mode.
4. start flash
5. if it doesn't work send it to me ill find a use for it
alternatively if the phone can go passed the splash screens and boots fully you can adb reboot download. just get the development kit and drivers on your pc.

just to be clear, you are holding volume up as well as volume down starting with the phone being powered down and continue to hold them after you plug in usb untill something shows on the screen?
if your phone is not seeing the volumes buttons you are one of the very unlucky few that had a problem at the most inopportune moment.
there is also a way where you hold all three buttons till the phone reboots twice, or something. let me try it and ill give more specifics.

Have you tried rebooting into recovery mode instead of download mode? Stock recovery is adb-ready and you should be able to adb reboot download. Its a long shot if you're having problems using button combo to get to d/l mode, but it's probably still worth a shot at this point.
If you were able to use 3 button combos before all this happened, and did NOT have to install the 3 button combo fix, its strange you don't have access to it now... Could restoring a Rogers Cappy to AT&T stock be the problem?

Yes, that's exactly correct. I do this:
1. everything pulled (battery, USB, sim, sd)
2. Open Oden (1 click)
3. Install battery
4. hold down (and keep holding) volume up and volume down
5. insert USB cable
6. depress (i.e. don't hold) power button
Goes straight to battery charging indicator.
If I swap #6 with holding the power button down, it continually reboots while just barely showing the battery charging indicator. I've tried letting go between black screens on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th black screen. Still no android dude with the shovel.
Try all the steps you stated but not the last one where you press the power button. Don't press the power button.

Trying to get into recovery mode gets me the at&t logo and the "jingle", but no recovery mode menu to reboot, etc.
This is what I'm worried about, restoring the Rogers stock over top of the Odin 1 click restore (which is an AT&T image) has bricked it and prevents download mode from invoking.

I know, I played with adb before I bricked it. ADB needs to "see" the phone, it no longer sees it (I have three computers, all three can't see it, but they can see my friends cappy with no problems first time, every time). Same process for his phone works every time to get into download mode, but not on mine.
And yes, have tried other USB ports on the same computer, both on the mainboard, and on the front ports.
Keep the ideas coming though please, I will try every one.

There's a trick to prompt download mode through a "jig" which you can hack together for about $2 in parts and a sacrificial microUSB cable...it works on the other SGSes, but I think it should work on the Captivate as well. Never tried it personally...

I work in a tech shop so have access to electronics, sacrificial cables, soldering irons, resistors, caps, etc.... could you point me in the right direction?
Oh, nevermind, found it in the i9000 forum. Will test first thing in the morning!
Cheers,
I bricked one today as well. Exactly what you are talking about here. The only thing is that i was still under the 30days so i swapped it out for a new one. As of right now ive been debating whether i want to do the voodoo fix (which i think is what bricked it to begin with)
Got a new phone
This isn't really great advice, but, if the bootloader is toast, there is a good chance you can get it fixed under warranty as Samsung won't be able to tell what you had on it.
You could try making the jig as the parts are cheap, but not much chance if your cappy is unresponsive.
There is also the aftermarket jtag option. It's expensive, but should work. You may be able to find someone with it. Seeing as your reward offer is half the price of one, it probably wouldn't be out of line as far as somebody offering that service.
I am assuming you have already done this and just forgot to mention it but try pulling sd card and sim for a few. Pulling only the battery does not always work for me

did you get any error from ODIN while flashing? especially about sbl.bin?
Im having the same problem... totally black screen, no power...i have flashed million roms also and have always been able to restore from a soft brick..but this time it wont even boot to get into download mode..ive tried every single method to get into download mode with no luck..
att is going to send me a warrenty replacement so ..hopefully that goes well.. but ill continue messing with it and if i get a fix ill def post it for ya
open Odin,,remove battery ,wait 1 minute, put battery back in, press and hold both volume buttons, insert usb. Hope that helps. this is what i did when I black screened mine.
Where are you located?
There was one time I really screwed the pooch with Odin and my phone ended up with a black screen & unresponsive. The JIG did manage to pull me out of it, I'm very certain the "your mileage may vary" line is applicable here.
I heard that even if the screen is black if you see it in odin you can use it. I would use odin one click. Good luck.
Try this. Unplug and remove battery. Plug in the usb open odin3 jh6 one click downloader. Press and hold volume up/down and power. Insert battery and release only the power button at the same time and keep holding volume up/down buttons. Let drivers insall if they aren't on your computer. Press download.

Sorry I feel stupid. Dodnt read the 2nd thing. This should work. Is your battery fully charged? And try adb if your computer can see it at all. And use clockwordmod next time so much easier and safer. But if everything fails att covers our.phone for a year. I know cause I bricked.it and tried exchanging it.

I've flashed ROMs a hundred and a half times and been fine. Gotten myself out of a million soft-bricks. But, this time I think I'm screwed.
My screen and phone is totally powered-off black after I tried to flash I9000UGJK4.tar as PDA in Odin on my device.
I've tried:
1.) Holding vol buttons and plugging in USB
2.) Taking out battery, plugging in, holding volume buttons and power button, putting battery in while letting go of power button.
Nothing responds. Is the JIG going to work in this situation or is this a hard-brick? I read the JIG thread and he said if your screen is black it won't work so I'm just wondering.

well That is one of the reason why we need to know what happens when your phone is plugged in via USB ...
Here is my advice : unless you are experienced with the Jig ( you ve restored your phone at least once using it already ) I say try again and again
For example : these resistor sometimes have 5% variation so for me the 301k wasnt working had to put it at 300 otherwise it wouldnt work ..
would also like top point out the jig does trigger soemtign in your phone so again even if nothing shows up on the screen try to flash anyways ...
BTW you shoudl remove the bounty and just offer it once you have beenhelped , I doubt anyone here is in it for the money (except me of course ) j/k
For dead screen, try this. It sounds like voodoo but it got me going.
Remove the battery.
Open Odin.
Connect via USB
Plug the battery in.
Hold down POWER and VOLUP until you get RED text on the screen. This will look bad, but is in fact a good thing. This can take 20-30 seconds.
Once the red text is up, hold down BOTH VOL buttons and POWER. Again this part will seem to take too long, but the red text will go black after a bit.
When the red text goes black, let go of POWER but continue to hold down both VOL.
Welcome to download mode.

Here's a quick reference for how to reboot and reset your 2019 Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (SM-T510/T515) using the hardware buttons:
Force restart:
- If your device is frozen and unresponsive, press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys simultaneously for more than 7 seconds to restart it.
Boot to Recovery Mode:
- Power off the device
- Press and hold the Volume Up + Power keys at the same time.
- Release both keys when you see Recovery Mode.
Boot to Download Mode:
- Disconnect the USB cable
- Power off the device
- Press and hold the Volume Down + Volume Up keys
- Insert the USB cable
Boot to Safe Mode:
- Power off the device
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When the boot logo appears, release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume Down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe Mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Since there is no Bixby button, these combinations are different than the Galaxy S10. If you know of additional combinations, please contribute to the discussion below and I'll consolidate here.
If there’s no response on your device or you're stuck in a boot loop, then you might need to wait for the battery to drain. The 2019 Galaxy Tab A 10.1 has a non-removable battery pack, so disconnecting that isn't an option. Hopefully, the system reverts to its normal function with a cold boot. This can take time if the battery has high charge left at time of failure. Depending on how fast your battery drains, this can mean waiting for a few hours to several days.
UPDATE: With the right timing, you can break out of a boot loop into Download Mode...but it's tricky:
Insert USB Type C cable connected to your PC
Press and hold the Power and Volume Down keys for exactly 7 seconds (hard reset)
Release the Power key and press and hold both Volume Up & Down keys (enter Download Mode)
If you don't see the blue bootloader unlock warning screen, keep repeating the above two steps
The trick here is that you're trying to time your switch to the Download Mode keys for the exact moment the hard reset takes effect. If you see the boot logo while still holding the first key combination, it's too late. If you switch too early, you won't trigger the hard reset.
I've had to hold down both volume up and volume down while plugging in usb to get the unlock screen to populate. Canadian Wifi variant.

Thanks, that was an error in my initial post. I was figuring these out by trial and error, but it turns out that our hard resets are basically the same as for the Galaxy M30, which also uses the Exynos 7904 SoC and has no Bixby key.
https://www.hardreset.info/devices/samsung/samsung-galaxy-m30/download-mode/
UPDATE: Also the same as for the Galaxy A30 and some others.

Yes, I did the same way
US version
1. Enable OEM Unlock
2. Turn the tablet off and unplug the cable
3. Press and hold both volume up and volume down buttons and plug USB cable to host computer
4. You will get wipe screen. Long press volume up to unlock the bootloader.
Now I have to find matching ROM and patch the boot.img and flash.
I believe you have to disable Vault Keeper to keep root intact.
Brand new out the box 11am this morning.
Opened the parcel cool no damage. Powered up fine, had a mess with it, no problems check the speakers were fine and no issues plugged it on charge to 100% took it off and left it for an hour or so, went back to it and physically used it to use Facebook and play candy crush cool no problems. Took a few photos and no problems again. Put it on the side still on near 90% and went back to it 30 minutes later completely off and won’t turn back on, tried charging it nothing no sign of life, tried rebooting it and still nothing. Please tell me that this is not the end and I need to get a replacement... ?*

I’ve not even been able to get it back on, I’ve attemp a reboot countless of times and still nothing rectifys it. I spoke with Samsung they feel it’s a major fault with the tablet and have told me to request a replacement from my provider or even a refund.
