I am using the email app that came on my Captivate and have some questions.
1. Is there a setting that will keep the app from downloading emails that have already been downloaded and deleted?
2. Downloading emails seems to take a long time even though I am on either 3g or 8mb wifi. Is this normal for the 2.1 os?
3. Deleting multiple emails takes a long time. My son's Sprint Android phone deletes emails instantly. I believe his phone also has 2.1 os.
4. Is there a way to select "all messages" in the Inbox Trash, or Sent folders instead of having to select them one at a time?
Do any of you use another email app that you feel is superior to the standard program? I know some users have switched to k9 and like it, while others say it is very slow.
Thanks

Hi,
flickign through emails on my diamond 2 using htc's interface doesn't mark the emails as read. I have to click through to open up the email in full in order for it to be 'read'. I never need to do this, so the new email count gets larger and larger and is almost always on 99.
is there a hack that can make outlook mark items as read after set period and even better, delete them after x days too?
my phone seems to slow down when i have too much mail on it, so somethign that can auto purge would be great.
thanks
Can't you just simply delete them? My device automatically marks them as read without clicking on them, which probably depends on your ROM version
Hello, I really need some help with some email problems here with my nexus 1 (att 3g vers).
It has NOT been rooted, and has android 2.2 installed (prefer to not root btw).
Anyway, the problem is in regard to the android EMAIL app (don't know it's name, but it's the icon of the envelope and yellow @ symbol in it).
I've set it up to handle my other email accounts (comcast and godaddy accounts) - not Gmail. Everything is setup finally and working fine...but for one problem...
once an email arrives, i get the notification...go to read it, BUT - then after reading it...it's then moved to the trash automatically (the trash in the email app that is, it's not removed from the server.
Driving me nuts - it's no longer in the inbox area of the email app, for each and every account). Each email just automatically disappears (goes to the trash) upon my reading it one time.
I can go to the trash folder and read, but this is ridiculous...shouldn't I be the one moving emails to the trash?
Can anyone suggest a fix here, or know of anything I can do to stop this?
I see no settings to change this...it's a serious bug.
Or...is there a better email app (one like this, as I do like the look and feel of this one built into android 2.2) that I should be using?
I downloaded K-9 email (but really hate it's look, feel and operation compared to this one).
Maybe there is something I'm not getting here though and need to change?
It's very strange that ea email would move to the trash upon 1st reading it.
thanks for any help here
also, i have tried searching this site for this problem with zero luck...
but i can't be the only one seeing this issue, right?
again: these accounts are my comcast and godaddy email accounts (not gmail, hotmail, etc).
thanks again
sorry man, I tried looking at my settings to see if theres anything I can suggest. Nada...
update to my Q:
Ok, doyeee
I think I know what's going on....
I was just setting comcast and godaddy accounts up and had the the email apps open on my PC at the same time while running tests.
When I did email tests, and having the PC email apps open for the same accounts...after they download to the PC is when they will go to the trash on the nexus email (not staying in INBOX on nexus when the PC email app has downloaded them).
This might be standard (I don't know as this is finally the first phone able to handle emails like this.
Hmm, i'd sure prefer it if all emails could remain in the inbox (or some other folder other than trash) as I can't hit "reply" once they're in the trash should I later want to reply to the same email with more info later on mobile.
Anyone using an app for their contacts that's better than the stock Captivate app?
My problem with the app is likely due to how I use it, but it's driving me crazy. I have 3 accounts syncing their contacts to it. 90% of each account is a dupe of the other accounts, but I need to have all 3 for that 10%. If I don't, then I have to pick one and constantly take the time to manually make sure it's up to date. Instead I think the spool should just work.
My problems are so far it only lets you combine 4 contacts. I *could* go through all 3 accounts and clean them up, but again, I think the app should be more flexible and let me combine as many as I want. Also, it doesn't let me choose a group of contacts within gmail. WHY does it think I need the contact info of EVERY person I've ever communicated with?! Let me just limit which groups within the account I want synced, especially to limit it to "my contacts" within gmail.
Anyone with similar frustrations find something better?
Thanks!

the one included in the Cognition ROM is pretty awesome. i just noticed it today (i don't use that app too often). it looks the same but you can swipe left to text a contact or swipe right to call. i found this very slick!

I would try dialer one. It's free and an amazing app. I'm not sure it will do what you want but there are tons of options. My favorite is the swiping to go to contacts, favorites, and call log. I started using it because I wanted my favorites to come up first thing without a dial pad when I hit the phone. Hope it helps.
all the contact apps are half done as is e mail
How can you take Android seriously without a decent contacts manger or e mail client?
I have tried them all the contact apps and they are all difficult if not impossible to use. Some do not enable all the fields you need and on others the search is incorrect. None of them mesh with or incorporate the phone & text function well. Right now I'm working with the 2.2 contacts manager, 2.2 messaging and Touchdown. It takes all three to marginally achieve what I need. This is an opportunity for someone.
I just installed the CyanogenMod e mail to try and find a decent e mail client. It is not much better then the 2.2 e mail (it does include your message when you reply), Touchdown or any of the others. Touchdown would be good if it would handle multiple accounts of each and every variety. There is another opportunity here.

If you are syncing 3 contact sources and there are some dupes, then those are linked - you can see all 3 individually, but picking the contact source you want to view, or you can unlink those 10%.
As for groups, 2.2 appears to fix this, but for now, one solution is to export all your contacts to your SD card then import them all to your "phone". The phone address book allows you to create and manage groups.
Maybe the stock Android contact manager is better. I am holding out for 2.2 as what i have seen, looks like they fixed most issues involving groups and google groups.
Hi Guys,
I am trying to find an email client which supports Microsoft Exchange / Activeysinc, and which can support multiple folders syncing. Right now i am using Note's stock email app, which is reasonable, but will only update the Inbox.
I however, have a large folder structure coupled with many server rules which automatically move the mails into their designated folder, so only updating the inbox is definetly not enough for me, because i can receive new emails in those folders but the mail client will not alert me when they arrive... instead, you have to go in each folder and update it manually, which is a real pain.
So, back to the original question: can you point me to an advanced email client who can do the above (automatically sync all folders and alert me when i receive new message in all of them, not only in inbox).
Many thanks in advance for your help!

Moxier Mail. Not cheap for the priviledge but it does as you ask and has a trial so you can test it before you buy.
I really like Touchdown by NitroDesk. You can sync any folders you want, and works for not only email, but also other Exchange functions. It's kind of expensive, but I find it's often on sale at the Amazon app store.

I like touchdown except for a couple things:
One, in the sea of settings, there's no setting to have it default to classic view; I have to switch manually each time I open the app. I like the newer view except that in portrait mode most of the screen is wasted space. I want more emails shown.
Two, poor battery life. There were other contributors, but I disabled push, switching to polling once every 24 hrs, and better battery stats still showed a huge number of wake locks. So now I keep it frozen with titanium backup until I really need it, like doing a server search.

I agree with you there. I currently have the version from the Android App store, which doesn't have that option for the view. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that couldn't find a way to turn it off.
I've been watching BetterBatteryStats, and I haven't had an issue with it using up my battery. Actually, K9 Mail is the one that kills mine.
Hi to all of you!
Many thanks for your replies. I actually tried Moxier and Touchdown, but I could not configure Moxier while Touchdown worked like a breeze... so I stayed with Touchdown. Currently I am using it in evaluation period and it looks ok to me (does what I need). I configured it to only update manually, so I did not see any issues with battery (so far, at least).
Once again, many thanks for the sugestions!
All the best,

Hi,
I've been using the email app for a Day now and already it's giving me a reason to switch to another.
The reason is this:
I'm using folders with my exchange account. When I read an email in a folder and go back, you would think it goes back to the same folder. Instead, it goes all the way back to Inbox.
IF there is an email thread in a folder, and i read one of the emails in that thread, and go back, it goes back to the folder like it always should.
So the problem is only when it's a single email in a folder.
Just wondering if anyone has seen this issue or if it's only me. And is there a workaround for this? There aren't many setting options for the app in general..
Try Outlook.
Have exact same issue. I think that's just how the app works, didn't find any way to fix it via settings. Very annoying :/
Just use Outlook. Since the Moto XT720 (my first android ever), I never bothered to use the stock email app.
