do i need to flash? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi experts,
I am very new to android, and captivate. I have rooted and unlocked my captivate. It's exciting to find xda-developers here doing "flashing" to maximize "customized usage" of android phone. I have a question here, do I need to flash?
I am pretty satisfied with present settings (after 'root' from post in androidcommunity). But the only thing missed is cifs support for samba mounting.
My kernel now is 2.6.29-jetaek.lee sep-11#2, firmware:
PDA: I897UCJF6
PHONE: I897UCJF6
CSC: I897ATTJF6
Do I need to flash? Which one should I take? I also don't understand JM5+Samset1.9f (for example). What and where can I find explanation? Thank you very much for your input.

Well if your happy with your setup then no need to flash..also make sure you read and completely understand everything before you attempt to flash or you can end up with an expensive brick...

Thanks a lot for reply. Maybe I haven't used this phone too much to notice a problem yet. But, suppose stay with my current firmware and kernel, could I still use cifs.ko from somewhere to get samba mounting work?
Thank you for the input.

[Q] rooting

Hello all,
I've been reading and downloading from xda for over a year now (sgs- darky's rom mainly), and this is my FIRST POST!
I know i can find my answer just by looking but i really wanted to post for the first time so here's my question- My tab is in the post (got it from ebay as i'm a pauper and can't afford it new, or the 8.9 or 10.1) and obviously want to root it straight away. I've seen that some are using z4 root but my sgs won't accept this method, can i be sure it'll work?
take care fellow "tabbers"
PS the doorbell just rang and it's here! *wets pants and logs off*

I need to get gingerbread (at least) on this thing straight away! Or any cool roms you can recommend?
How do i find out if it's GSM or CDMA? i'm in the UK... That is probably a really stupid question, but i'm a stupid guy... A stupid guy who loves android and wants to learn more!
Any links to the right places would be really appreciated
First you're not stupid. You're just new and learning.
Second your tab judging by its firmware is gsm european tab.
Third you can root using superoneclick root.
Fourth. Head to the development section and you will find alot of great roms (or click on my sig if you're interested in overcome). JUST BE SURE TO READ ENTIRE GUIDES AND STUDY THEM BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.

So many people get themselves into trouble by not reading instructions or skipping ahead.
Easy to get yourself into trouble, can be VERY hard getting out...
Thank you for all the help, most kind I'm at work now so will try some bits tomorrow, managed to get rooted before leaving tho

Your tab is rooted already. Look at the kernal version. In your apps you will see something called Superuser. Tap it. If its there and opens you are rooted.

That's what really confused me, the kernel said root on it, but no super user was there and none of my purchased root apps could aquire root.... so I used super one click as advised and hey presto! Still confused as to why it said that on my kernel tho...

Someone tried to return the tab to stock. The busybox was probably there too. Anyway, you are good now. What's next?

Thanks all, I installed the overcome gold rom last night and all is well
Just out of interest as i'm un-learned, how can you tell if the bootloader is signed? (As far as I can tell) it hasn't affected the rom installation... could it?
Thanks all for the support!

Android n00b - requesting help

For some time now I'm the proud owner of a SGT GT-P1000.
I'm not using it at her full capabilities, mostly as eBook reader and occasional some Angry Birds, music, email.
Reading the forum I've only got even more lost then I was (if that's possible)
I'm not sure what "version" of the tablet I got (Bell,Verizon,AT&T) but I'm pretty sure it's from Vodafone Romania (I receive it as a present for my birthday).
Reading the General section of the forum I've noticed a lot of threads about the new Gingerbread Firmwire.
Of course I've tried updating my Tablet to it but with no chance: Kies crashes every single time.
So ... what's the next step?
Should I do a manual update? If yes which thread should I fallow? I've seen several in here for different Tab versions and I really don't want to screw this up.
Do I need to unlock my Tab in order to make the manual firmwire update?
What exactly does this Firmwire do? Is it like a new version of OS (like a ROM) for Tab?
So I ask a more experience user to try and answer in a "n00b friendly" language to my questions and maybe provide some EXACT links to the threads I should fallow in my little "adventure" (unlock, manual firmwire update, ROM update).
Thank you in advance.
PS: If this section of the forum is not appropriated for my questions, I ask an Admin to move the thread.

Everything you need is in that thread, and if you have any problems with it then that's the place to ask.
First of all you must check your firmware tasting on the phone dialer *#1234#.
Second , check simlock and network lock is OFF dialing *#7465625#, share those informations with us and then , maybe , we can help you with somme advice.

Should I do anything else to improve my overall "experience"?

There are various things you can do to "improve your overall experience" ...
This includes but is not limited to : Overclocking (Now stable at 1500Mhz), Undervolting (Varied success depending on device), Retheming (dozens of ways to do this..), Chainfire 3D (Can be used to "fake" the tab into thinking it has an Nvidia driver) and the list goes on and on... It really just depends on what you want to do with it now...
If it's just Angry birds and ebooks... you're good as you are (with the exception of maybe themes)
sometimes i need help too.

Question about Rooting in the US

Hello there! I apologize for being a twit, but I just received my shiny white Note today and am super excited; coming from an Atrix this is a huge upgrade! I did have a question about rooting though. My phone has the N7000XXKKA (2.6.35) kernal, and I've seen the specific rooting tools in the Development section, but I noticed some of the files have the same name but different countries attached to them. Do I need to know where my phone was made? Or can I use any of the files that match the kernel version I currently have? Thanks!

The original firmware on my phone was for Brazil (UBKK1) and I put on checkRom (which uses XXLA4.) Everything works fine.

For Rooting, you need not to care about your region, You have kernel KKA, then you go to this tread, find 'I have kernel KKA'(lower part of OP) download required file, extract n run I am unrooted script.
Thanks! Your thread was incredibly helpful and did the trick. I have a question that's not really related, but you might know: If I install one of the custom roms, will it break the pressure sensitivity of the S-Pen? I do a lot of sketching with it so I don't want it to stop functioning.

Sorry, I can't help. I have never used any custom ROM

[Q] Help this complete Tab Newbie

Good evening all,
My Christmas present to myself arrived a bit early. Its a used Galaxy Tab 1000!!
It is running the Froyo 2.2 and when it boots up at some point it displays "Orange". I put my own sim (not Orange) first it says you cannot use your sim card, then i went to settings and enabled voice and it seems to be working.
Ideally i would like to install MIUI onto my tab, as I was using MIUI on an my HTC Desire and I was very happy with it.
I looked through the forum and i read the newbie guides and after some stress i managed to root it using z4root. (First i try with the Superoneclick but it stuck on step 7)
Now i am trying to install the MIUI but in most guides i saw it says i must to have gingerbread, but i dont know how to get there, and i dont want to destroy my Tab. I was saving my money for many days to get it.
Can somebody help me to get to MIUI?
Thanks
The Tab is still a pretty useful device! It's a P-1000, not one of the other versions? In that case it's best to install Overcome. It's a great way to put GB on a Tab. Look for one of priyana's posts, he has links to instructions and the files you'll need.
I just saw one of priyana's posts. That link should be this thread.

Hi ableeker and thanks for responding. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I have read so many posts these past few days and it gets a bit confusing. I will study the post you suggested carefully and i will ask any questions there...
To answer your question it is a GT-P1000 (it says so on the back) and i bought it used from Austria (ebay). It is Orange branded (indicated by Orange logo splashscreen at startup and shutdown).
In the about phone screen i get the following information:
Model Number: GT-P1000
Firmware Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: P1000BVJI3
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
Build number: FROYO.BVJJ2
Ideally i would like to know whether the fact that this device is branded means that i have to use a different / adjusted process to install Overcome. But i will also ask this question in the post you pointed out to me.
Thanks once again for responding!

Is it possible to remove EVERYTHING from my i9305 and install a fresh android rom?

Hello, this is my first time posting on this forum, so hi to everyone.
My question is pretty simple: I have bought a Samsung GT-i9305. I didn't know that it is a branded version (T-Mobile, if anyone knows how to check exactly what version that is, tell me and I'll try to provide necessary information) though. Now there comes my question. Is it possible to remove all of the android rom that is installed on this device and replace it with a fresh, non-branded version? Even stock samsung 4.4 android would be sufficient for my needs. I just need some guidance because I'm afraid I'll brick my phone if i do something wrong and I wouldn't want that. The branded soft annoys me very much, everytime I do an update of the system it installs some useless aplications (they have German names, so my guess would be that this branding is T-Mobile german edition, bought it in Poland though). What's more, I also tried to root the device a few months ago, but to no effect, and now it says that my device has been modified when I try to update it.
I hope this is the right board to ask the question.
I can't give screenshots of the device information because of spam protection for new users. Maybe I can give them to you via PM, if anyone would be interested in helping me.
Thanks in advance to everyone trying to help me.
EDIT: I also tried to install a cyanogen mod on this device and I got the message that this device isn't supported by cyanogen mod.
First make sure of the model of the phone. You should see it in "settings -> about device -> model number"
If you have the i9305, then you could check out this thread by @MaHo_66. It has a nice collection of de-bloated stock 4.4.4 roms.
First you will have to root your phone and install a custom recovery. HERE is a good guide to start, again from @MaHo_66
Make sure you hit his thanks button if you find them helpful.
Yeah, of course it's helpful. Thanks a lot! I liked your post and I'll definitely try the guides you linked.

I can't seem to find such versions in this thread

I wouldn't worry too much about matching build versions, just try a build for your country/region and you shouldn't have any dramas. If you can find a build that uses your provider, you can benefit from the most optimized baseband, but any should work well for your country
