Hey Guys,
I have a GT-i9000 (Unlocked) and after a few firmware upgrades I have been noticing worse call receptions (more drops) and worse 3G data performance.
For example, I once had near perfect reception and few call drops along my drive home, now (5 firmwares later) I have been dropping calls like my old iPhone (actually worse) and what is more upsetting, yesterday my friends with their iPhones all had signal while I was getting the no service icon.
While i know the Captivate users can use the i9000 kernels (but swapping out the modem file) I wonder if anyone knows if I can use their Captivate modem file (JG8) instead of the one that comes with JM7 to fix my issues with reception and 3g performance .
What functionality will i lose? I travel to Germany often, will that cause issues with 1900Mhz and 2100Mhz bands ?
Is there any other reason that my signal would be so poor?? I really need help with this.....
Is anyone else using an unlocked i9000 on AT&T and having poor voice calls (signal/drops)?
What firmware are you using now? I would like to see if this relates to my issue.
I'm using JPC on my Bell i9000m and am starting to wonder if the reception is not as good as with JH2... I am contemplating using the JH2 modem file with JPC to see if it helps...
Coincidentally, I'll be in the US in a few weeks so I want to ensure I have good reception on AT&T as well.
i am using JM6
Just tried the modem from the the Captivate JG8, it would not even install.
So I am running JM7 now.
I will see how many dropped calls i get today.
JPC stopped booting for me and I am on JM7 as well - I'll post my comparative results as well tomorrow.

Just did some tests with my wife's iPhone (3gs) and my galaxy s.
Passing the same dead zone and her phone could make calls and mine would fail.
I wonder if i put it on gsm mode only if that would help.

I'm having a problem. I have a GT-I9000M device that shipped with the latest Eclair ROM (JH2) for that model. Worked fine of course.
A few days after rooting it I flashed JPK and then applied Doc's Mod. It changed the boot screen and product name in About Phone to GT-I9000 instead of GT-I9000M. I wasn't too worried, though, because I was sure that with the speeds and reception I was getting, that I was getting all the bands I was suppossed to.
Then I decided to flash JM8. I followed the instructions to do so, then applied Doc's Mod. The ROM was great but I was getting almost no reception (either 1 bar of "G" or zero bars "H" in most situations). Super slow/poor data and phone performance.
Then I decided to go back to the stock JH2 that the phone came with to get my speeds back. I flashed (using 512Pit) the PDA, Modem, and CSC for the device. Booted up and ran great, and both boot screen and About Phone have changed back to GT-I9000M. But while I'm getting some "H" reception, reception over all has been quite poor and not what I got originally with the device (or so it seems).
How can I check to see what bands I'm actively getting and which I'm not? What steps should I take to resolve this? Thanks in advance!
Grab the SGS Tools from the market. It has some secret codes that will answer your question.
After testing, my Galaxy S is definietly only getting minimal 1900 3G coverage everywhere despite my other phones pulling down very strong 850. So something is definitely wrong it sems, how would I go about fixing it?

Follow my instructions here.
you need to install BMC product code, right now i bet your product code is KOR, i was having same problem only getting 1900 band, after flash back to JH2 change my product/sale code to BMC, then wcdma 850 will work again
Once I flashed back to UGJG8 I was able to change the product code which fixed it right away (that didn't work from JH2). After fixing, I flashed back JH2 again and it continued to work fine. I then flashed JPK and it continued to work fine. Although if I want to downgrade from JPK, I now know that I need to go to UGJG8 first. Thanks for all the help!
Um, hi.
Last night I purchased a new Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell. Of course the first thing I did was jump over here to XDA to do some required reading. I proceeded to unlock, root, and flash froyo. All was working fine, until I found an App on the ROM to do a factory reset. There was still a lot of bloatware on the phone so I figured that would be a good idea. After that, I've begun experiencing low signal issues in certain places. The phone can still connect to the Rogers Network, and I have the correct APN settings (I get 3G), but in many areas my phone loses signal. Before the data wipe I could make calls just fine out of my basement but now I don't get signal down there. Is there any way to fix it? I know this sounds pretty vague, however if you need any more information I'll be happy to provide it.
Cheers!
(By the way, I love this phone!)
A lot of people have complained about losing the 850mhz frequency when upgrading to froyo on the bell sgs, so if you can't get 3g then you just lose reception all together, there is a fix for it, I believe its in the android development section, search in there, I saw it in there yesterday, search 850mhz lost signal and it will come up for sure, there's a fix for it

Ah Alright. I've been reading around these forums a bit and I came across a few of those threads. I wasn't sure if that was my problem though, I'm still pretty new to the phone. Thanks for the help!
No problem, glad to help

From what I am reading, it doesn't look like there's a froyo fix :/
Does that mean I should downgrade back to eclair, at least until Bell releases official froyo? If that's true it's unfortunate
did you read the 850 sticky topic?
just go into the service menu
and play with the band selection options
that should get your 850 back
I live in Edmonton, alberta Canada and have a 9000m on bell with darky rom10.2 JVQ band.
the phone works great in town I have zero complaints but as soon as I get outside the city even a kilometer or two it drops right down to one bar then some after to nothing.
now my girlfriend's iPhone 3g has full reception in all the areas mine has none, hers is also on bell so she has been bashing my wonderful phone claiming iPhone superior.
after reading threads I have come to the conclusion my modem installed is incorrect. as there are about 6 or so different modems I'm wondering if anyone in my area can narrow it down for me as I have read different modems are for different providers and areas.
any help would be great!

I just saw that early today was added a Fastboot Package for Claro Argentina (Milestone 3 XT860) in this thread: [Fastboot Files] Gingerbread 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 for UMTS XT860 Milestone 3 (Can't link, sorry).
Here is my problem: two weeks ago I was able to access internet from my XT860 using 3G from my house, but since the 24th of December I'm not able to (2G - EDGE works good). I don't know why. If I move two blocks away from my house I have perfect reception and I can use 3G data without any problems. I already took the phone no customer's service and they gave it back to me with another blur version but still it doesn't work. I'm making almost daily calls to Claro but they don't do anything.
Currently I'm using: 2.3.4 with 5.1.790. Should I expect any change if I flash the new files?
Thank you for your help.
P.S: I don't live inside a Faraday cage

That sounds more like a problem with their network. I don't know why your device would selectivly not work just at your house. That's an odd software bug.

I don't know what's going on but it's weird for me too. Anyway I'm going to flash the new firmware with RSD. First time doing this with Android, any tips?

Make sure your battery is fully charged, recently another user borked his phone as it died during flashing. I have a thread called xt860, custom roms and you that has a full guide on fastboot flashing, rooting and custom roms

Well, I've already successfully flashed the new firmware but the problem is still there. That's it, I have no clue on what to do next. Thank you for your support anyway.

I think its with their network, or perhaps physical interference from something nearby. I can't think of why it would selectivly not work only at your house if it was a hardware/software issue it would be either all the time or totally random. Try mapping out the area where it cuts in/out and report it to your carrier.

I've already reported it. Several times. But they just answer "the computer shows that the antenna is working fine, you shouldn't have any troubles". I call every day to complain about it but they just don't do anything.
Hello,
I am having some problems with my AT&T Galaxy Note 3. I have not been able to figure out the cause. I flashed Dynamic Kat (newest version) on my phone and it is having problems making outgoing calls. I show 3 bars 4G LTE and when it switches to 4G while making a call, the reception goes to 0. I wait and the phone shows that it is not registered on a mobile network. The weird part is that sometimes the phone can make an outgoing call. I have tried two different ROMs and so I think its probably the phone's fault. My mobile network works.
Another symptom is that sometimes when I restart the phone, the phone says it does not have reception and I have to take out the battery and try again. Are there any settings in the samsung hidden menu that would cause this problem?
Data and everything else works, it just that when it switches to 4G while making the reception goes to 0.
I had the MLG version of Kk installed on my note 3, and had great reception. Untill I used Alliance rom, which has the newer modem on it. I flashed the MLG modem on the Alliance rom and have had great service again. You can give that a try.

That could be it. I did flash Alliance rom before. I'll update with results when I have time to change modem.
Having the same issue on 2 unrooted phones after updating to the newest Kit Kat ROM. Most of the time it shows 2 bars and I can't make calls or receive them. Calls go straight to voicemail without missed call notification. Phones are now worthless in low reception areas. I had to resort to Voice IP using Ring.To and my home wifi to get my incoming calls.

A couple things to note. Samsung phones radios are weaker then other phones (at least that's what at&t told me lol)
2nd thing to note 4G LTE and 4G are both for data not phone calls. Phones calls I believe are sent over the edge network.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

My phone always drops down to 4G/HSPA+ to make or receive calls. I have never seen it use edge during a call.
Samsung radios may suck, but they've gotten a hell of a lot better. I live in a pretty strong LTE area and with my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus I could barely get LTE unless I was directly under a tower. My Note 3 holds onto LTE all day long in areas where I barely got 3G with my Gnex.
My only complaint with the Note 3's reception is when I'm at the gym. It's a steel/concrete building so it's near impossible for anyone to get a signal in there, but somehow my Gnex managed to do it. It was only 1x, but that was enough to send texts. My Note 3 says screw it and cuts out completely. I was on Verizon with the Gnex and now I'm on AT&T (obviously), so perhaps the different frequencies used by the carriers has something to do with it.
