Hello
I am looking at my /system/app and trying to figure out what these apks are responsible for and is it safe to nuke them
MediaProvider.apk
BugReport.apk
MediaUploader.apk
Clicker.apk
PackageInstaller.apk
Development.apk
DownloadProvider.apk
SettingsProvider.apk
DrmProvider.apk
SoundRecorder.apk
FilePicker.apk
Stk.apk
GooglePartnerSetup.apk
Term.apk
TmoImPlugin.apk
UserDictionaryProvider.apk
GoogleSubscribedFeedsProvider.apk
HTMLViewer.apk
ImProvider.apk
Now, I am pretty sure what some of them are (like ImProvider.apk) however I don't quite use those services so I'm wondering if they are stand-alon apps or integrated with something else (like IM and Gtalk may be?). Also, DRM provider, what's that? I don't believe that I have any DRM media, do I still need it? If someone could neat-pick thru those and let me know - that would be greatly appreciated. I decided to get rid of my a2sd set-up and going lean and mean. I already nuked all the stuff I could think of but I want to free up some more space in /system/app and stuff some of my apps from /data/app in there.
Thank you in advance.

I have an idea what most of them are but don't want to give a wrong answer.
package installer - what allows you to install .apk's
sound recorder - self explained, sound recording app
bug report - reports whats goin on
googlepartnersetup - googles first intial set up
settings - settings for your phone
media uploader - what allows your phone to upload video and pics to internet
development - for development purposes (assuming dev tools or something in it)
user dictionary - assuming its what stores all the words you use when you type
I'm not 100%. If I'm wrong on anything go ahead and flame me.

See that's where the problem is.... I use astro and that has built-in package installer... do I need 2? I know I need file browser lol
Initial set-up is handled by Checkin.apk and Set-upWizard.apk and I got both of those nuked successfully
Well....I guess nothing left to do
.....goes to nuke some stuff
Thank god for nandroid
My guess would be that package installer is used by Market so maybe you need it or maybe Market just downloads and doesn't install without package installer so then you can install with ASTRO. I wanna know what the stk.apk is for as it's never been in there before, I know it has something to do with the SIM card but what exactly?

You're right, I remember seeing it somewhere that stk has something to do with dual sim enviroment however I thought that android did not support dual sims... hmm interesting, well going to nuke it anyway.
You're probably going to want to keep PackageInstaller. Even though you can install apks through Astro it wouldn't have the right permissions to do so on its own. It would have to do so through a system level service which is likely what PackageInstaller is.

Good point. I'm taking them out one by one to see what happens.
Thanks!
FYI I wouldn't delete any of the *Provider.apk files. These appear to be basic system services that other apps would need to implement some of their functionality. MediaProvider for example would be the service apps would use for playing sound or video. I'm not sure but I think DRMProvider is for protected apps (this would also include free apps if the developer published it that way). Some of the others also look like they would be used for app functionality through intents as well. Like HTML Viewer which I believe provides HTML rendering for apps that need it (possibly including the browser as it wouldn't make sense for it to have it's own separate renderer). Term might be what provides the adb shell. I would really do more research before you start deleting files indiscriminately. I just keep recalling the old story about the guy who deleted all those useless DLL files to free up hard drive space...

By the way Term.apk is actually Terminal Emulator so you don't need it if you don't use it and plus you can download it from Market.

I have to say once more.. thank god for nandroid. I'll post my results here at some point. See, some stuff may only be useful to some people and be a complete waste of space and resources for others. In my case - IM is that waste of space. I do use Gtalk but it's a stand-alone app therefore I thought that I could delete IM.apk, IMprovider.apk and TmoIMPlugin.apk without any problems.... WRONG!!! Gtalk started giving me FC. I've deleted IM.apk previously without any problems so it's one of the other two. Nand for now... will play with it later.
Thank you for your thoughts, if anyone wants to contribute - please do so.
I'm wondering what apps (system/google) are safe to remove from my N1 running Froyo? I deleted the Amazon MP3 store, but am afraid to delete much more because I don't want to run into problems.

The normal procedure is to nandroid first, so remove whatever you want as long as you've verified your nandroid is good.

You can remove the following without affecting system stability:
Bluetooth (as long as you never turn it on)
Calculator
GenieWidget
Gmail
GoogleFeedback (but will cause non-fatal errors)
GoogleQuickSearchBox (breaks Google Search on the phone)
Launcher2 (if you have another launcher)
LatinIMETutoral
LiveWallpapers
LiveWallpapersPicker
Music
PassionQuickOffice
Maps
Street
TTSService (will break all text to speech services)
VoiceDialer
VoiceSearch
VPNServices
With the obvious consequential loss of functionality.
Removing some of these will cause non-fatal errors in your logs.
Backup first!
What about latitude, goggles, google talk, and google voice?
I removed the stock messaging app since I use Handcent, which unfortunately broke MMS. SMS still worked just fine.
I removed those successfully:
- Facebook
- Twitter
- CarDock
- Email (not the Gmail one)
- Amazon MP3
- Google Voice
- QuickOffice
- and couple more I can't remember
Safe/Unsafe to Delete
Ran across this earlier, not sure how or why lol, but bookmarked it for future reference, as I have most all those deleted already.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barebones
^That's sure an informative list! There seems to be a few more I can trash
I have removed FACEBOOK and TWITTER without any noticeable issue.
Dan
So besides not seeing the apps anymore (and then sometimes loading themselves), does this free any space? In /system I guess? So doesn't help much in that regard.
Although I get the point, I dunno why but Amazon MP3 running all the time really bugged me, it's the first thing I nuked after installing Titanium.
Does anyone knows why this are happening? When I select a contact it gave me this messages:
Sorry!
The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I've been having issues with this too, there are threads all over various android forums (sorry, new user, can't post links) for it, just try google. In order for anyone to be able to help you however, we need to know what you've done to your phone, just root, custom ROM, frozen apps/services, deleted system apps, etc. as any of those could be having an effect on your phone. Some people are able to fix it by putting back the yahoo! contacts authenticator, but that did not help with mine, and I only had success after SBFing it.
Tanx. I rooted my phone and I deleted only the veryzon apps. I think it's all.

I am one of them - but it was necessary to De-Frost both Yahoo apps.
BTW, is there somewhere a list of apps safe to freeze?

PLEASE Be sure to make backups while removing, or changing the stock apps with your phone in order to save yourself a lot of time, Ibuprofen and caffeine.
Yes, there are various ones, but I found this one to be most helpful; (please note this entire list was copied from Cory Streater over on androidcentral forums, and is actually a list & guide for removing bloat apps, though these same ones SHOULD be safe to freeze, should you choose to)
Please read carefully and proceed with caution
If you are only looking for the lists, feel free to scroll down to them. That said, there is some very important info before the lists I would strongly encourage you read.
This list has been created based on my prior experiences with a variety of devices. I am very confident that the Verizon Bloatware, Live Wallpapers, and Widgets listed below can be safely renamed/moved. That said, this is a new device with an updated version of Motoblur. If you do not want to be a test case, you should wait for others to confirm these apps are safe to remove. Do not throw stones at me if something goes wrong.
Before you begin:
Before you start making changes, I would strongly recommend backing up your device with a program like Titanium Backup (also in the market).
All of the files below are in /system/app.
The most popular file explorer for accessing and moving these files is called Root Explorer.
Do not delete files. Either:
Rename them from <filename.apk> to <filename.apk.old>
Read post #2 to learn how to move them. Historically, on other phones, OTA updates have failed if apps don't exist. The system folder had to be exactly the way it was when the phone shipped.
Before you rename or move an app in the /system/app folder, check the list below. If it is not listed, or you are unsure if it is safe to modify, please ask first. To be safe, I would only remove the apps listed below, until it is updated.
If an APK file also has an associated ODEX file, the ODEX can be renamed/moved also.
The following is a must read if you need to put an app back!
When you move an app (and ODEX if applicable) file, from /system/app to the SD card, the permissions change from rw-r--r-- (to) --rwxr-x. The owner/group changes from root/root to system/sdcard_rw. The app disappears from the app drawer and all is good.
Now, lets say you move them back for some reason:
When you move them back, the permissions remain what they were on the SD card.
The apps (e.g., VZ Nav) will not show up in the app drawer - even after a reboot.
You need to put the permissions back to rw-r--r-- and then reboot before they will show up in the app drawer again.
The owner/group of these files will remain system/sdcard_rw, but that doesn't seem to have any negative impact.
The best way to change the permissions - is to use Root Explorer.
Move your apps from the SD card to your /system/app folder.
If it isn't already, mount the folder as R/W
Press down on the file you want to change the permissions on then select permissions from the popup. If you get an error that it isn't read/write, then you didn't mount the folder.
Next, you should get a popup that allows you to change permissions. Change them as follows:
Required file permissions if you need to move something back:
Group Read Write Execute
User Checked Checked Not Checked
Group Checked Not Checked Not Checked
Others Checked Not Checked Not Checked

There will be others, I'm sure, but I won't be the first to try.
If there are additional apps that you have successfully renamed or moved, please post them in this thread.
Suggested alternatives for removed apps:
Instead of the built in browser use Dolphin HD.
Use Google Maps with Navigation instead of VZ Navigator.
Buy apps through the Amazon MP3 store instead of the VCast music app.
Convert movies using DVD Catalyst 3, then transfer to your SD card instead of using the VCast video app.
For file browsing try using Root Explorer.
Search the market for a free caller ID - instead of the subscription based CityID app.
Instead of the Verizon IM client search the Market for an IM client app and/or stick to the built in Gtalk application.

And, sorry for the lack of formatting on the previous post. As I said, it was copied from another forum, and I would have posted a direct link, but I'm not actually allowed to yet. Hope it helps!
the same issue has already been solved here and here.
Personally, I succeeded - my XT860 is working as it should (see threads above).
What is really missing is a list of apps with descriptions of what they do to enable everybody to decide, whethet it is safe in terms of their needs to remove them.
Titanium Backup works good in terms of freezing apps, but failed me completely in terms of backup - I should have read their webpages more thoroughly... it seems TB cannot recover some system apps even if it tells you they are backed up. To have an image of systems apps saved and root explorer available is definitely safer way how to go back.

This ROM should work with safestrap 2 or 3, but has only been tested on v3.05.
To flash, first create a ROM slot in SS3, activate that slot, wipe data, then install the ZIP.
Do not clear data again after installing - this ROM installs some necessary files to the /data partition.

How-tos :-
===Over/Under Clock/Volt===
You can find a template overclocking script in /etc/init.d named "02overclock".
By default, all the options are commented out.
The script includes example values tuned for my specific CPU, so yours will probably not work with these values, but it also lists the default moto values for reference.
While testing, copy the script to /data and run it from there - don't put testing values in /etc/init.d or your device may bootloop.
To edit the script, type "rw" in terminal to enter read/write mode, then make the changes you want using your favorite text editor.
First, uncomment these lines
#echo performance > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
#echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online
#insmod /system/lib/modules/symsearch.ko
#insmod /system/lib/modules/overclock.ko
#echo hotplug > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
Then start trying various settings for the 0,1,2,3 Steps of CPU scaling.
See the following article for details on tuning the VSEL and clock speeds to your device - proceed with caution.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/14511-opptimizer-projekt-milestone-overclock-for-omap4-devices/
Once you have a stable set of values, in terminal "cp /data/02overclock /etc/init.d" and reboot.
Now your phone will apply these values on every boot.
Sounds cool, might give it a shot.
Couple of cuestions:
what launcher does it have? ( I know I could easily replace it, but, just curious )
since it's deodexed, do you reckon rom toolbox themes would work?

Launcher - ADW, latest as of today.
Theming - should be possible, only some static resources in framework-res.apk have been modified, which I don't think will cause any problems.
I'll update 1st and 2nd posts with a lot more info in a few hours, am at work right now, so not cool to be spending too much time on forums.
If I understand correctly this is NOT overclocked by default?
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
It looks fine so far, with one major exception: there is no settings->accounts & sync, so, since GMail is not installed by default, I cannot set my GMail account to sync after installing the app. (I do like to tweak these settings, so I'd have to see it back.)
Also, settings->battery & data manager->battery mode force closes (not a huge issue). Settings->battery & data manager->data delivery->Social applications force closes (expected that one.) If there is a way to disable these menu items, that would be a good thing - nobody like to get an FC.
Also, like Maverick, the default typeface dos not distinguish visibly between normal and bold type. In GMail, it is nearly impossible to tell which conversations have unread messages and which do not (unread have bold type on stock.) You can sort-of tell because unread and read conversations have a slightly different background, but it's too subtle to tell at a glance - you really have to look to see the difference.
Nice to see a new rom development
@Endoroid Yep - not overclocked by default - you need to tune the overclock script in /etc/init.disabled/02overclock, testing carefully. Only when you have good settings for your CPU should you copy that script to /etc/init.d so it applies on boot.
@doogald
settings->accounts & sync - I'd recommend using the built-in email client. It handles gmail really well and has sync settings in the app.
settings->battery & data manager->battery, settings->battery & data manager->data delivery->Social applications force closes, yep both those features are removed. I'll look into tidying up the XML so it no longer shows those settings.
A patch release has just been uploaded to the OP, its a fix for headphone connectivity, well worth having.
Next target is a tidyup of the settings menus and an effort to get notification power widget and better battery/signal indicators.
Meanwhile - does anyone know of a source for a better built-in browser APK?
The D3's default one doesn't remember mobile/desktop useragent settings, so I usually end up installing Opera instead.
it will be great if you add more languages to it....

Thanks. I'll look at the email app, but I generally prefer the GMail app for important message support, etc. Second, I like to tweak the sync settings at times - turn off Google+, for example, or turn on Picasa if I am looking for photos that I know I have online, and then turn it off when I don't need it (most of the time). There are other apps that store sync settings in settings->accounts, such as Dropbox, so I'd like/need to have those settings exposed. Also, I know that some people like to sync Facebook or Twitter contacts.
Lastly, thanks for taking the time to develop this. It's great to see another ROM choice.

Hehe - so far I've been removing languages. It might be possible to make flashable language packs for it, I'll see if anyone's done something simillar.
@doogald
There are other apps that store sync settings in settings->accounts, such as Dropbox

Hmm, that does make sense yes. I'll have a look at reinstating it.

Not to be rude, but that link doesn't work. It tries to redirect me to download some kind of client. 4 browsers have been tried.

Thanks, but could I reenable the account sync setttings somewhat urgently by myself?
I needed to set up for google+ instant upload, but G+ fc'd at settings... which seems related to this missing menu.

I was able to download using the PutLocker link yesterday. I just tried again, and it worked. (Chrome on my Mac... I always use a computer to download and get to the device either by direct connect or via Dropbox.)
@Cyrus221
You're looking at the interstitial advert between multiupload and the actual download site. Click "Skip Ad" in the top right, then you goto the actual download.
Don't blame me, blame crafty tactics by multiupload's commercial partners.
@palmwangja
I've found the reason AccountAndSyncSettings.apk isn't simply working when I reinstate it - it depends on moto's "blur" account syncing engine, which is heavily woven into a lot of the stuff I've removed to make this rom so small and efficient in the first place.
If we enable that bunch of settings, then the rom loses much of its point - being small and fast.
Instead of that, I'm looking at getting CM7's apk for the same function to work instead.

Thanks for taking the time to try this. If you can get CM7's to work, that could be a big plus.

Thanks, sounds like a plan.
BTW, Will there be any chance of getting a widget on notification bar, just like any other ICS roms?
Your rom seems really promising, and can be one of the best daily driver.
