Am getting a really cheap brand new liquid e, is it still worth buying? does it have multi touch support? One thing that I am disappointed about is mini USB instead of micro, but its not a big deal if rest is a good package. How is direct sunlight legibility outdoors?
personally I think the Liquid E it the best phone for the price.
If you are from Canada you can pick it up new from kijiji for $250. Lots of ppl using their Fido $$ to get it for free and just selling it there (got one for my GF)
Performance wise its got the same processor as the Nexus one except its clocked down to 800Mhz for battery performance. 512 MB of Ram/Rom
Its upgradeable to Android 2.2 since October (Faster then a lot of other devices) and it will most likely get gingerbread seeing as acer is on top of the upgrade cycles (a guess).
I do notice that the touch screen can be a little iffy. The edges of the screen sometimes are really hard to detect and in general the whole touch screen could be a little more sensitive. But that can all be fixed by rooting your device and changing some values around.
Multitouch, Im not entirely sure, it has it but might have the same issues as N1/Experia when the two fingers come really close to each other.
Overall, Id buy this phone if i didn't have the money and weren't waiting for Nexus S to come out for AT&T/Rogers/Fido frequencies.
Hope that helps.
I got mine not too long ago, and for the price im moar than happy with it. Comunity support is really good. Maybe not so much here, but modaco has lots of different custom roms that can be flashed onto it. Really good phone for the price : )
I'm waiting for Rogers to replace my 3rd one. They keep failing. The battery life is horrible. I've been without a phone for a month now because they are back ordered.
I just upgraded to the captivate about a week and a half ago so I could return it and get the Inspire when it's released if I wanted. I've been looking everywhere trying to compare the two and just can't make up my mind. So, what are some pros and cons of both?
Captivate-
Pros:
AMOLED Screen (4" screen is a pro for me)
Battery Life
Great Dev support already
Thin
Good Camera
Cons:
GPS not as accurate as I'd like
Samsung & AT&T aren't supporting it very well.
Inspire-
Pros:
HTC build quality
HTC Sense
Better Camera
4G Speeds (although my captivate has some amazing speeds with different modems)
Most likely better support
GPS
Cons-
Large non AMOLED screen
Thick
Poor battery life
Kind of a last generation phone (HTC desire HD) with added 4g speeds
I think it will come down to being able to see the two phones side by side once the Inspire 4G actually comes out next Sunday. I also am looking at it, because I've always liked HTC in terms of build quality and HTC Sense, but at the same time my Captivate is a more than capable phone. Sure HSPA+ would be nice, but it's not in my area yet, so I don't really have that to worry about at the moment. I plan on seeing how it performs against the captivate once it's actually out, and then deciding whether I want to buy it or not. I suppose I could lobby for it for a late birthday present, it is 3 days after my bday I'm not going to use an upgrade until AT&T has LTE phones available though, that would be purchased retail.
Because I don't even use data, it doesn't even matter whether it's 4G or not; I just use my Wi-fi.
I think what it's really boiling down for me is just the great quality HTC builds their phones with, plus the fact that Cyanogenmod is already being developed for it.
While my Captivate has been nice for the past month and a half, I'm going to have to ring ATT Warranty ASAP and get the Inspire from them, tell them about my shutdown issues [I had a refurb Captivate to begin with], so they'll have to exchange it for me.
I'm not even going to wait for Atrix or Infuse, not worth it.
How will you get an inspire?

I'm wondering this myself. I know that with Verizon if you have a phone replaced 3 times they will give you a different phone of equal or lesser value, but won't they just replace it for a captivate that doesnt have the shut down issues? I don't see how they would just upgrade you for free....
At&T has already stated that they will not be offering me phone models to those who have had the shutdown issue. This is not to say that some nobody will convince them othwise bit the policy of offering a new model after three replacements has already met resistence from at&T even before people have had the opportunity to try.

It's not an 'upgrade' technically... ATT warranty will make you switch out the phone twice. The third time you call in, they'll probably be reluctant to give you a different make and model, but you have to insist. If that doesn't work, have them transfer you to either a floor manager [they walk around and have administrative rights], a supervisor [not always as effective], or the Resolutions team, which is just a group of administrators that are sometimes really helpful when you're trying to do this.
Obviously you'll have to wait until they actually have refurb Inspires, you're not going to walk in there on launch day and ask them for a refurb... You have to make it as if you aren't obviously looking to get a better phone. What I usually tell them is that the phone has [insert problem here], and once they send me the second phone, I'll check the IMEI, make sure it's in the affected range of IMEIs, and then report it again. By then, you can say something like you went to an ATT RETAIL store, and they told you to call in about this phone that is very similar called the Inspire. When they ask you why you didn't just replace it there, tell them that RETAIL STORES DO NOT OFFER RECONDITIONED PHONES.
By now, they've run out of luck and will process the order for you.
Cheers!
The AMOLED screen sucks. Big time. Text is grainy. Solid colors and gradients look oily/rainbowy. Everything is oversaturated.
im thinking about switching to the Inspire or Atrix (Inspire just got more interesting as I dont like the pricing policiy on the Atrix).
I have had the Captivate for a couple of months now. Nothing wrong with it per se, it des everything its meant to, but I spend my time trying to make it have the look and feel of Sense!
Captivate has a great camera (better pictures than any HTC device I have ever used, and I have had many) and a bigger battery. Screen is very good, but I like bigger screens.
so Im going back and forth. Is there really anything that much better on the Inspire?
I sent back an aria 3 times and they sent me a captivated. So they will upgrade you

I was offered a free upgrade to a new inspire after my third captivate failed. I had to really fight for it, but after an ATT rep suggested I find a new phone on EBay, I was mad enough to ask for his supervisor. That did it. Problem solved. I really did want to stay with ATT because our whole extended family is with them, so I asked them to please help keep us from switching. I love the inspire - except for the lack of swype. I miss that feature

build quality? really have you ever looked inside one of those things? what makes you think it is built better?
The pros a cons from comparing both side by side.
Inspire :
Pros :
Big screen
Great ui
Decent GPS
Great feel
Cons :
Considerably slower than captivate
Horrid battery life(carry your charger)
Confusing settings and menus
Even with sense eventually you're going to flash another ui (on to other things)
Terrible build quality
Captivate:
Pros:
Awesome bright and clear screen(better than the atrix by far)
Good battery life(up to three days)
Thin
Swype
Great community support
Great build quality
Cons:
Terrible GPS unless the sky is clear on all roms
Can drain a battery fast(its powerful)
Kind of small
Now notice how I didn't list support as a pro for either. THE SUPPORT FOR BOTH PHONES IS THROUGH ATT AND SUCKS ASS. Contacting HTC only got me sent to att and it sucked. Just getting a battery rma was a pain.
Now if you want to go for android get the inspire. Its built for android. If you don't mind waiting for gingerbread and spruce then get the captivate. We love our terrible GPS for a reason. Its better all around.

orange county new york. not anywhere near nyc, actually nyc can cause issues with the tall buildings but i can navigate there decently now. i have driven down to philly and dc without issues and up to buffalo. i really dont think it is a regonal thing
it wasn't always that way. jf6 and jh2-3 roms needed a clear sky.
ji6 would crash the gps if i changed settings causing it to fail to start gps untill i preformed a factory reset, simply reverting settings i changed and clearing gps data did not help. (the samsung app also corrected this situation without reverting any settings)
jj4 was the first rom i was able to use the gps without looking at the weather or being carefull about what i did with the gps settings.
with da_g's fix it did not crash like i described above on ji6 based roms.
but now after trying several modems and gps settings i find that there are several good modems. kc1 is my new favorite. kp1 seems to work good on some roms and act erratically on others. jl3 works good for gps as does jk3-4 but jl3 is better than the jk3-4 modems by a small amount. none of those modems are as good in call quality as kp1 and kc1. there may be others that are good.
also ms based modes can cause random blue circles and incoming calls cause loss of gps signal. i think it is an interference problem. but running gps in standalone mode with a kc1 modem and da_g gps fix for good measure gives me the best gps i have ever had on a phone(provided i dont get incoming calls)
The incoming call problem you describe is because the phone a GPS share a chip causing interference. Anyways thank you for the information. Always interesting to see how people fix it. And KB and kc modems have the audience chop so it sounds awesome. Buy it only works with KB and kc kernels as well otherwise you don't get that awesome chip. Anyways thread Jack over.

I had the captivate and switched to inspire and have liked the inspire so much more since day 1. Sense is a great user interface and runs smoother than touchwiz. there are ways that you can make the battery last longer as well ie juice defender and such. It has a flash for the camera which for whatever reason was lacking from the captivate. The captivate had terrible support from ATT and samsung and i broke two of them in a matter of months. First one the speaker broke second one the power button broke i am not buying a samsung phone ever again because of the captivate
I had the HD2 a year ago. The best phone I ever had! It was stolen and so I got a Samsung Vibrant. Now there is quite a few things I dont want live without. Im getting an HD7 next week so I need to know about a few things
Wifi or usb tethering?
A torrent downloading app?
Wifi calling?
Fantasy Sports app?
Google Navigation?
MLB: At Bat app?
Shazam app?
Thanks in advance
BTW, I realize that wifi calling and tethering are not features included with the phone. I was thinking maybe a custom rom feature?
Wifi calling you can use Voxofon

Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
As to almost all of that, out of the box the answer is a big fat no.
If you are getting as great deal and have a good backup phone then go for it because in a short while the main issues will probably be resolved.
Not sure whether you will appreciate this or not, but I just went the other way - got rid of a HD7 and got a Galaxy S (almost same as Vibrant I believe) and overall am much happier.
The Galaxy S is a much better piece of hardware than the HD7, it's better ergonomically because you can't easily use an HD7 single-handed. Also, the screen is in a different league and is actually usable outdoors unlike htc phones where you just see reflections in the glass.
The graphics hardware is more powerful in the Samsung and of course Android has a much larger selection of apps at the moment.
The OS isn't as slick looking as WP7 of course but generally I find it much easier to navigate round and use. For starters the back button works the way you want it to.
Plus the touch screen is way more accurate so typing isn't quite a chore.
If you're set on a WP7 phone check out the Samsung Omnia 7.
But I'd recommend you keep your Samsung and install Cyanogen Mod like I've done, it's great!
Thanks. Im getting the HD7 from a friends mom who just went to AT&T and the phone is just sitting there collecting dust. $75 for it is awesome. Im thinking of giving the Vibrant to my girlfriend but im a truck driver so internet on the road is way important.
I loved the HD2. The size fit me better. Never had typing problems with the HD2. This Vibrant is a pain in the ass and I find it way less accurate. I have Bionix installed on it and its really fast and I have a lot of sweet apps but ive wanted the HD7 for Xbox Live on the road. Netflix is intriguing but im guessing it uses a lot of data usage.
Plus when I switched over to the Android service, my data plan when from 10 gigs a month (until throttle) to 5. Im not sure if thats just Tmobile's gig now. Plus my calls drop anytime I go from "H" to "E" to "G" connections. Really friggin annoying!
So I'm finally getting around to moving on. As much as I love my Nexus One, I'm in need of a new phone and with the deals coming up I don't know what to get. Being a "even more plus customer" (or whatever they call it now) I don't get those nice phone discounts so everything is relatively expensive. I have to buy it at full price
Today I saw the Galaxy Nexus was on sale for $400 which is really tempting. I know how great a phone it is, but its a little on the big side for me (ha). Then I saw Tmo's $100 trade in value and thought about using that to get a One S for $500.
The things that keep me away from the One S are that there is no removable battery, the possibility of bugs on the first release, and a locked boot loader. But it's such a beautiful device with an amazing camera that it's hard to resist. Money isn't really a big deal, but its a factor I'm considering. I could do a bit more with that $100.
Anyone else that has moved on, what made you switch?
Any recommendations about which phone to get or input in general would be great!
TL;DR: Need new phone, Galaxy Nexus or One S?
(not sure if this is in the right section, hope it is..)
no removable battery is a stopper for me
did you handle the dummy or do you have a working one where you are. the dummy was alot longer than wide. kinda like the n1 but an inch longer, or so it looked and felt. i didn't like it.
why not wait a couple weeks and see about the ssg3

I used a dummy, I liked how it felt, but you brought up a good point. I should probably try the real thing.
I was considering the S3 but I'm concerned it's gonna take longer than I'd like to get to the U.S. and be too expensive. The deals to me were the reason I wanted to buy a new phone. Are you considering the S3?
I just came from a nexus one and went with the gnex. I absolutely love it. Removable battery and it being a nexus are the winning factors to me. Being a nexus and able to type 6 or so lines of text to flash the stock image and root with files straight from google are big factors for me. The phone is smooth as hell. The other ones will be tainted with sense and Samsung garbage.it is quite wide but I'm getting used to it quickly, after two days I can just about use the phone fully with one hand.
i am looking at the ssg3 or galaxy note, but fed up with tmo slow speeds in my area, Dayton Oh, and still stuck on a 2 year contract. I get .5 to 2mb most of the time. My wishes are dl speed at +5mb minimum, good signal strength at my house and work, 4.5 inch screen or bigger. I will root for apps and nandroid but may not continue flashing as these new phones have it all now--for me at least--
I posted on another thread getting 10-13mb dl with gnex on verizon at store, i know in two years most carriers will be lte capable, so the speeds are coming
yeah, i noticed a little bit of a service bump with the hspda+ on att in some spots in my area getting about 6mb down 2mb up where it used to be 3mb max on the n1. im perfectly fine with that amount of bandwidth, i dont need my phone to have the same service level of throughput as my home internet and chew through my battery. i wish the carriers could improve on the response time / ping now, who cares about bandwidth, its all marketing hype. give me a 22ms ping with 3mb down, not 300ms ping with 15mb...
those speeds would be acceptable to me for now, as in two more years we may see perfection on smartphones for most of us. as i have time maybe someone in the dayton area will get the unlocked version and post tmobile speeds here--
If you're fond of plain Android or CM - get Galaxy Nexus.
If you're one of those who flash Sense/MIUI on your N1 for functionality, and prefer it over plain Android - get One S.
There was already such a thread that I participated in, you can find my opinion there. Personally I can't stand plain Android for the reasons I laid out many times, and dislike ICS design.

Yeah, I found your thread. You bring up a good point about the development, but I feel either way I'll be okay. I do like my stock ICS, but I'm curious to see how the new sense is, maybe give it a chance. Although, I saw a development of Sense, Blur, and Touchwiz ports over in the Galaxy Nexus form. Made me think twice...
I tried to go to the t-mobile store and use a One S today, but they were closed by the time I got there D: Hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on one soon.
One S is better then GNex in most ways but development. Built quality is amazing, screen is very nice, camera and camera app are also super. but right now you just cant do much with the phone besides running Sense....there are no 100% functioning ROMs or any mods YET.
I say screen quality is better on One S in terms of colors, but Gnex is very sharp and resolution is 720p
I have One S and thinking about trading for Gnex because I just hate sitting on stock ROM and waiting....but I am not 100% sure yet
The is just one flaw in One S design, the cool notification light is very cool, but its not visible from the sides.
/nod.
Just handed back the OneS. Until there's some decent Roms, the existing Sense stuff is very annoying. The camera on it is VERY impressive, build quality great too. Screen, same brightness as Nexus One (ie, very clear), but not /that/ bump up in rez. When there's some decent roms for it, I'd jump in and enjoy it, but for now, there's a lot that'll annoy you.
My iphone4 is crapping out on me and its time for something new. The only current phone with a slide out is the lg enact, and reviews on it arnt good. The specs are about the same as the d4 which appears to be a better phone. My work phone is a samsung s5 and while i love it, i hate digital keyboards and i dont really need this big of a powerhouse. All I use my phone for is webbrowsing, facebook, spotify/pandora, gps, email, snapchat and call/txt. Is the d4 capable of these things? My i4 isnt capable of running facebook or spotify without loads of lag/freezing.
droid 4 can do some multi tasking but ive never used spotify/pandora so i cant really comment on how thatd work however i do usually torrent stuff while browsing the web on firefox and maybe listen to music at the same time with everything going fairly smooth. obviously it wont be as good as an s5 but should be alright
D4 actually performs pretty reasonable as long as you keep the bloat out. CM11 and Slimkat are the most upto date rom options, both are stable for daily use I've been using Slimkat 8.8 (4.4.4) with apex launcher and a few background services like skype/kik/snapchat installed with only 320/838mb RAM usage on boot. Battery life isn't great because the Droid 4 only has a 1785mAh battery, but generally I have enough battery to get through the day.
Hey elanzer. Thanks for the feedback! Do you have any experience running music applications such as the ones i listed? Also, is the bsttery removable? Ive seen mixed things in regards to this. If so Id be interested in seeing if there is a upgradable battery option to get a little more juice in there.

The battery is labeled non-removable by motorola but you can still remove it with tools and install a replacement battery, there's an extended battery by mugen available too.
Since the Droid 4 has a MicroSD slot, I don't use anything like pandora/spotify because I just put my music on a 32gb SD card and play it with Apollo, but I can't see why it hasn't worked. I've used some streaming audio in the background while doing other things without issue.
Ive had my Droid 4 since it come out, Ive recently starting using iheartradio/slacker/di.fm music apps with only the occasional glitch/lock up, i think most of them were caused by too much crap running, im looking at updating to slimkat or cm11 to see if there are any improvements over stock, i hate to get rid of this phone because i cant find any new phones with a tactile keyboard as i too dislike touchscreen typing, only thing that is holding me back from updating to custom rom is ive read that 4g lte isnt working and thats a no go for me
im using cm11 (4.4) and i have 4g lte with verizon that works just fine
from my understanding lte wont work with any other carrier so just verizon so i say its pretty safe to use 4.4
as for the battery you can get a slightly extended one (gold) for 14-15 dollars or the mugen brick which is about 90 dollars the model of the battery is eb41 so you can search for that
if you buy gold or mugen they should come with the screwdriver required to make the change since there are 2 screws holding the plates on the phone
additional stock batteries probably wont have the tools with them
