ok i have had my replacement captivate for a while now to make sure everything is good and nothing is wrong with it and now it has passed so i have a question. i am about to upgrade the firmware but which one do i do should i use JH3 or JH2. right now i am at JH6. so whats the differences between JH3 and JH2
Do u currently have jf6 or jh6? And both jh3 and jh2 are very similar. You won't notice a difference
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
i have the stock one that comes when shipped from att i think its JH6
i think he means JF6, and theres not much of a difference between the two, the only thing thats i noticed was that my gps seems to work a lot better on JH3 than JH2, other than that it ran the same
ok and im downloading the jh3 firmware right now but how do i flash (kinda noobish i know) and whats the best way to root and are there any problems i should be aware of

Hi guys,
I know some of you guys with a i9000M bell version are running the JP6 or JPM, can you please do a write up with details on how to do it via Odin.
Please include link to the files and what needs to be done before the flash on the stock JH2.
Thanks.
I just flashed JP6 using 512 no repartition right over stock UGJH2. It worked okay till today when after seeing a ton of FC's I had to power cycle the phone and when it came back it lost the CSC/Modem so I had to do a factory reset.
I went back to stock Bell firmware for now.. not sure what I'll do. I heard JM9 works good, but I really want a stable Froyo with voodoo

Same thing happened to me. Which stock firmware did u get ? my phone will not event boot right now. Im only getting passed the animation then a black screen.
At least my Download/recovery works but even if i flash I9000UGJH2 from samfirmwares, it just stays on the black screen .... Trying another fix. But i think my internal SD card is finished. Hope not
I upgraded using reghack and Kies, but now there's no 850 band, so if you are on Bell do not bother to update with the Nordic firmwares.
Hi,
I've tried searching for this but haven't found all the info I need before I take the plunge. The phone is a 16GB model originally from Vodaphone but with no sign of branding.
Early on after getting this phone I flashed JG5 2.1, and since then kies hasn't shown any firmware updates.
I haven't found a definite way to hack kies to upgrade from JG5 directly to JPO, so I'm thinking of going the Odin route.
Some people say you have to flash to JM8 then to JPO, is that true? Or can I go directly to JPO downloaded from Samsungfirmware?
many thanks for any help I can get

This should be in general or Q/A. In future don't post in Development just because it gets more traffic.
I updated via Kies using the registry hack to go from JM1 to JPO, without any problems. On samfirmware it does say you should flash JM8 then JPO but I'm not sure if this makes any difference. My phone is going great since I updated to JPO, straight from JM1. All I can say is that if you try it you've got nothing to lose. So why not?
ALSO! Please make sure that you can access download mode. If not use one of the fix's on this forum.

This is the same question with me. I want to upgrade from froyo XXJPA to JPO, why should the JM8 then to the JPO??
and what CSC, PHONE and MODEM files should I use since theres only PDA ...
Has anyone here flashed the secondary bootloader file (sbl.bin) from the JV1 or JVK firmware on their i9000m (Bell Canada) phone?? Is the phone still fine after flashing it?
I just want to know if it went through fine or not. I was one of the unlucky ones that had a HW issue with my i9000m, so I'm being extra cautious with this one...
I was wondering that as well, as my phone was showing problems before and I received a replacement. However, I took the risk and flashed stock JVK (along with the new bootloader) then moved onto a custom JVK rom. I wasn't very happy with the battery life though, so I went back to a 2.2.1 rom. Things are still ok but it's only been a couple of days..
i flashed JVK with sbl.bin last week and i am still using jvk now. It doesn't have any problem so far. Everything's fine.
Has anyone else done this with no problems on their i9000m??
put me down as one who has been using the new update for quite some time with the bootlader upgrade and all is well.
I too have had problems with my i9000m before and had to send in for repair during the end of 2010 so you don't have to worry about this update!
I've flashed full JVK also. Rooted with CF-Root_CWM3.0.0.5 Then changed to KC1 modem. Gingerbread is super fast and the battery life for me is incredible. Don't know why some have better results than others.
i flashed as well but might as well wait a week for custom roms since the source code was released !
I went from a full KC1 firmware and just installed the PDA via odin without a repartition, so I kept the BMC CSC and the KC1 Modem. Been running fine over a week now without issue. It's possible that Samsung added the fix to all future I9000 bootloaders due to us folk that aren't using the stock bell firmwares.
I flashed JVK with bootloaders to PDA only. Flashed hardcore kernel (k13e) and then added a Kitchen ROM from within the sd. Then went back and changed to the KC1 modem. Will check battery drain today and might try the stock JVK modem once I clarify how to activate 850 within it.
Thanks to all on xda for helping us new people get control and tweak the best out of out phones.
how does hardcores kernal work with 2.3.3? i thought it was only for 2.2.1
I too had a number of issues with the Galaxy S from Bell. Had to return 2x, so I was hesitant to flash the JVK with bootloaders. I did try the JVK without bootloaders first, but it didnt work, so I took the plunge. Working for a couple weeks not, no issues whatsoever. Battery life is better than anything I used before. I am now running the Darky 10 Rom. Must say I love this phone (as long as it stays working, that is). Sorry 2 returns tends to affect user confidence.
I have been running JVK with no probs for a while now. I was a little hesitant to jump in, but I am glad that I did.
Thanks guys for all the responses. After returning my i9000m 5x for replacements due to whatever made the internal SD fail all those times, kinda scares me to flash the bootloader.
I'll take the plunge then!!
OK, so I've been reading guides, FAQs, how-tos, and various forum posts, and thought I had a pretty good handle on how to flash FW to this machine. So, last night I backed up everything important, and downloaded from here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 ) the following:
2.2 UGKC1/UGKC1/BMCKC1/Sbl. This is the stock FW as currently installed on my I9000M from upgrading through Kies.
2.2.1 XWJS8/XXJPY/OXXJS5 (MultiCSC) (no sbl)
So just as a sanity test I first tried flashing the UGKC1 PDA file over to my I9000M using Odin. This worked as expected, since it's the same kernel.
Next, I tried to flash over just the XXJPY PDA file over to my I9000, using Odin. No re-partition, no PIT, no modem or CSC. No go - it just repeatedly displays the GT-I9000M screen and never boots the kernel. Couldn't get into recovery mode from this state, but was able to access 3-button download mode.
So, tried flashing over the 2.2.1 XXJPY PDA, Phone and CSC files. Same as before - no actual boot.
I flashed it back to the 2.2 UGKC1 PDA, phone and CSC files, and did a factory data reset and cache clear, and everything was fine running 2.2 again.
From reading here it appears that others have successfully installed 2.2.1 or even 2.3.x kernels on Bell Canada GT-I9000M phones. So, what important step did I miss?
Do I need to re-partitiion? Do I need to use a 2.2.1 FW that includes the boot loader?
For now I'm OK running 2.2, but would eventually really like to be on 2.3.x and don't want to wait for Samsung to make 2.3.x (what happened to 2.2.1) available to GT-I9000M phones. I'll leave it alone for now as I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks and don't want a hosed phone.
What happens if you flash just a kernel like CF root or speedmod? My only other thought is to redownload jpy and try again as maybe the download was corrupted.
Also with another kernel like speedmod you could download and install a custom rom on cwm (clockwork mod) via recovery that is 2.2.1
I've had some problems with 2.3.4 (never tried 2.3.3) so I am back on Froyo for a bit until things get sorted out a bit more.
G
I don't know if there is a suitable version of CF Root for the UGKC1 firmware - they mostly seem to be oriented to the more international versions. As usual, in Canada we get something a little weird. Don't know about speedmod.
I don't think there should have been any problem with the downloads, as the files themselves are in md5 format, which means they are getting verified by Odin 1.8 when it goes to use them, as I understand it. If they were corrupted Odin should complain about it.
With the announcement ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158492 ) that Gingerbread is supposed to get an official release to Bell phones soon (which mine originally was), I might just let this lie, for now.
There is a gentleman on youtube by the name of AndroidGalaxyS (original, I know) that has some excellent and detailed walkthroughs and reviews of various ROMs for the I9000M.
youtube.com/user/AndroidGalaxyS
Specifically in your case, you'll want to watch this one that shows how to install 2.3.4 JVP:
youtube.com/watch?v=cLXQn0gOBuA&feature=feedu
Good luck.
I agree that the source maybe lacking. I just found out that the JL2 firmware from samfirmware.com is missing db_data file so I would always get an error after flashing that. KC1 would also not always boot for me so it might be missing something too.
That said what are you trying to accomplish? If you are just trying to go to another stock rom I'd just leave it and put a custom kernel on to give you root and CWM recovery.
Most any other Froyo rom is flashable from CWM in recovery and you do not need to worry about odin except to recover from bad things and it looks like you can do that. Gingerbread is different because they changed the bootloaders and that means Odin.
Of course its getting harder to dig back and find those Froyo roms since the rest of the i9000 world has been on GB for a while.

Thanks for the replies, so far. Mostly I was just experimenting, and trying out XXJPY was just a first step in my experimentation before moving on to GB. Part of the reason for this is that it seems like a lot of the modified kernels and so on are meant to be flashed over certain versions of the firmware, and those versions don't include the Bell/Virgin-specific ones. Or maybe I've misunderstood how this stuff works.
Yes, while my attempts to install XXJPY have been a complete failure, even when re-partitioning with a PIT file, when I re-flashed back to the stock UGKC1 FW everything was fine.
At this point I'm just trying to get a better understanding of where this went wrong. I've never specifically updated the SBL - the JPY package I installed didn't include it, and I didn't check off the "Update boot loader" box when re-installing KC1.
I've seen a number of posts here from people who updated I9000Ms to other FW, but unfortunately they don't seem to have detailed exactly where they started from, or exactly what they installed, or how.
Wierd problem, I am having issues with the speaker on my captivate, sometimes its so quite you cant even hear it and other times its just fine I am assuming its a hardware issue and i am planning on sending it in on warranty before my year is up. So i am currently running gingerbread, I know the 3 button fix is a big nono but I have ran it tons of times before when on froyo. So my phone is capable of going back to stock jf6, should I use the Odin one click my phone is a 1010 build. Or is there just some way to flash the froyo/eclair bootloaders like the gb one click.

if your phone will accept jf6 odin one click it, why flash just the bootloaders and then a stock package wehn you can do it all in one go?
