dbdata folder is empty - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I am following this video tutorial on how to sideload apps on the Samsung Captivate with AT&T.
youtube.com/watch?v=Zo9BIRXvNfw
But, my dbdata folder is empty when I view it with DroidExplorer. It was also empty when I used ES File viewer. Why might this be?
I did install the Clockwork mod, but I factory reset my phone.

Those files are pretty much secure.. the only way I know to see those files are through Root Explorer.
if you want to sideload apps the easiest way is to just use Wonder side loading machine or something.. or if you have droid explorer.. go to batch installer.. then choose the .apk you want to install ( make sure your phone is in debugging mode)
Btw.. you can't really use droid explorer.. unless you have busy box.. and I believe busybox requires being rooted. So IMO, use the sideloader wonder machine

exploring apps2sd

is there a way to do it on the phone through a file explorer from the market? id like to copy the apk's to fat32 or pc and reinstall after I change ROMs (don't wanna loose my paid apps). I don't have any partition programs or internet right now and don't wanna deal with commands. ill find someway to format my ext2 if I can save to pc. maybe someone can suggest a simple light partition utility program I could download using tether on edge speed.
I'm running Cyanogenmod 1.4 + jf recovery if it helps.

try astro (free) you should be able to see it
Root Explorer is the better option but its paid.
paragon has a free ext viewer (im not sure if thats what your looking for)
but you can easily back them up to your pc
Copy the following into notepad, save it and put it in the folder where you would like to back up your files. rename it from name.txt to name.bat
hook up your phone to your pc, and double click the .bat file
Code:
adb pull /system/sd/app app
adb pull /system/sd/app-private app-private
all you have to do is set up adb
its much easier than copying them over one by one
note the above is for apps2sd set up already

Boot animation location issues

ok so my data cable got wrecked (waiting for new one to arrive) and im using swiftp to get files onto my droid so how do i get the boot animation into data/local since astro and my computer wont let me view anything inside the data/ folder? i have terminal emulator app on my phone but not sure how to use the comands. how would i move bootanimation.zip into the correct directory?
Simple fix
Just search "Wireless ADB" on the Market, once you've got it set up (Google is your friend, but seeing as how you're already set up using swiftp sounds like you're good to go lol), do a little more Googling for the Terminal commands you'll need for ADB. Any questions, PM me and I'll do my best to help ya out (^_^)>b
Just use Root Explorer. It'll let you move, delete, copy, etc. any file anywhere all over your phone.

I agree. I just got Root Explorer on the Market and it works very well. You can also extract and compress zips. By far, the best file explorer I've used for Android!

(Install RootExplorer and simple replace the bootanimation.zip, located in /Data/Local/

what means R/W. i dont understand. and if it allows me to replace it to another bootscreen zip if it will does that mean that i have success! does it_
i dont have rooted phone or anything, i just bought it from store my DHD. and its 1.32 version something with froyo.
R/W means Read / Write Access - Which is basically the ability to make changes.
You will need to root your phone to change the boot animation though.
Check the Desire HD Development section for some great guides on how it's done. Luckily you have 1.32 so you won't need to downgrade 1st. Just be sure to read everything 2 or 3 times so it's clear in your mind
I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076
Ask any questions about it in that thread to keep everything together.
if i use root explorer, do i have to root my phone? to change bootscreen?
heres the program to try it with! rootexplorer 2.10.apk
i do not have rooted phone, but is it possible via this program to change da bootscreen by simply replacing da file
Warez ? RootExplorer is a paid app, and u are sharing it!
You can install pretty much any app on your phone, but if it requires root access then the task you want it to perform will fail when the app requests root permissions. So Root Explorer might install and open ok, but you wont be able to do anything with.
Just go ahead root it, then you're free to do whatever you want. I just rooted a friends DHD today and it only took around 15-20 minutes, and most of that was waiting for it to back-up or reboot.
Also, you might want to remove the RootExplorer attachment, might get you into trouble from the mods

Graffiti & Handwriting apps

Though I could download and install Graffiti on my Gtab , I cannot select it as an input method. A message warns that personal data may be collected, and if I'm sure I want to use the input method. However, after tapping ok, Graffiti remains unchecked. Another similar app gave the same results. Google gesture search seems to work, so I'm hoping someone here might know how to fix this.
(using: TnT-Enhanced v3.1.4b)
Update Edit:
I am getting the same problem with the gingerbread keyboard.
Hello...
I had the same issue and gaspra over at this post gave me the answer... Hope this helps you out. BTW, there is a free version of Root Explorer in the market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993752
you will need a root explorer, it's on app market but not free.
From Root Explorer, open the /data/app/ folder and you will find the
keyboard you just installed. Then copy the apk file to /system/app, note
this is where you need the Root Explorer to change the permission for
/system folder from R/W to R/O (allowing permission to write in this folder
by user).
Do a restart once you finish copying the file. The new input method
should be enabled by default then.
Alternatively you can use "adb" tool from Android SDK to transfer the
apk file if you don't have a copy of Root Explorer.

[Q] [AOKP] Cannot access root files to install boot animation

So, I've rooted my captivate and have installed build 32 of aokp.
I'm trying to install a custom boot animation. However i cannot access /system/media from my computer and when i try to copy and paste the .zip from the sdcard, file manager won't let me. /data/local does not exist.
I should mention i'm running blue infinium.
Any help? I'm pretty sure i'm being stupid but i've tried everything i can think of and read a bunch of threads.
Thanks in advance,
JSP

Unless I'm mistaken, you actually want to put your boot animation in /system/media.
And if you have ADB installed, you can just reboot to recovery, hook up the USB cable, put your bootanimation.zip into the /platform-tools folder where ADB resides, and issue this command:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip
If you don't have ADB, you'll need to get a root-level file manager (ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, etc) to move the file.

I'm assuming ADB is an app, and the code i'm supposed to enter is entered on the phone through a terminal program?
Otherwise thanks, makes sense. Anyway to access /system files through windows explorer?
Thanks again
*EDIT* Also, thats what i've been trying to do with the file manager. But when the file is selected/cut/copied, i cannot access the root files. I have tried several different root file systems.

ADB is on the computer, you run it in terminal or command prompt. There isn't a way to access /system through windows explorer

Alright, thank you. Also, does terminal=cmd? I understand terminal can be on the phone, but i always thought, on windows anyway, that terminal is synonymous with command prompt.
Thank you all for the help

ADB is Android Debug Bridge - it's part of the Android SDK that you have to download and install from Google. It's a pretty handy tool to have.
As korockinout13 pointed out, no dice with the Windows Explorer seeing the root files, and terminal does equal cmd/command prompt.
With the explorer app on your phone, you'll have to look around and find a setting that will tell Android to mount your /system folder as read-write. I believe in Root Explorer there's a button near the top that switches read-only and read-write.
Looked around on explorer and couldn't find the setting. Root explorer costs 4$ and I've tried a couple others. All giving me the read only memory error. I'll just have to wait till I get home to do it over adb. Thanks for all the help.
root access wont let you "see" your root folders when you mount your phone as SD card.
adb is one of many options.
copy to sdcard, then use a root level manager to move
wait!! there was this on the portal today.... Quick ADB Pusher.. adb file pusher GUI
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/push-files-to-your-device-with-quick-adb-pusher/
Got it to work with Ghost Commander. There's an option to remount files as ro/rw.
Works great. Thanks for your help!
That bootanimation is screwed up - it's not zip, files are stored. It took me a while to figure it out.
