720p is not full HD. Also, that phone has 8GB of internal storage, the Nexus One has 512mb. Excluding the option is probably due to several things. One being the camera/video recording application on the Nexus One is the stock android software where phones like the Evo or that Samsung have custom apps for this. Second, HD video takes up tons of space, if you were going to allow HD recording a 4GB mSD card wouldn't be enough for all the videos and music, etc that people put on the phone. That isn't to say 8GB is enough, but it's a jump in the right direction. In the EVO4G's case it comes with 1GB internal and 8GB sd card out of the box.
The potential for the Nexus One to do HD video is there, but no one has figured out how yet, afaik. Pretty sure there is a thread with people working on getting 720p video recording working.

You´re right, 720p isnt full, sorry my mistake... But if you look on youtube to some sample i9000 recorded vids, the image quality is incredible and even the sound is much much better as the one on my n1 :-(!!!
It is completely awesome that we might have 720p. I don't care how much space it takes couldn't we just get bigger cards? Or is the rom the problem?
lol theres no "full" HD.
720P/1080i/1080P are all HD. Dont let made up lingo by TV companies to sell new sets skew your perception of tech.
fyi best available HD set by a country mile until this year were 720p Kuro sets.
As for recording quality. Its not about resolution at that point. Its about bit rate,FPS, and encoding quality.((software wise anyways))
I was under the impressiong the samsuns has a much better gpu component.
i dont see how or why the internal 512mb of memory has anything to do with it, nokia phones like the n97 have been recording 30 fps video directly to the sd card for years. maybe not in 720p, but couldnt we at least get the nexus one current resolution to bump up to 30 fps? and yes i read that thread, seems like lots of promise! cant wait

Samsung's 1GHz processor is not the snapdragon its something 3x better with a GPU 3x better i think its the "humming bird" processor!
There is nothing between CPU or GPU and realtime video encoding on mobile devices. It's done by dedicated hardware.
Nexus has the hardware, it can be made to do it, it was made to do it, and it'll hopefully improve even futher.
All the comparison of CPUs, GPUs etc with bare words and no facts is not going to do any good besides wasting forum pages.
There is a big difference between a question and a complaint. Complaining that the device doesn't do what it wasn't advertised to do is quite... strange, let's say.
i think someone talked about this before but i can't find the thread in searches. is it completely impossible to get 720p video out of the milestone?
likely possible, just depends on how many frames you would like per second...
The camera seems to be high enough quality to capture the pixels you require but the phone may not be able to process/compress the video stream, given the frame rate you may desire.
I'm not totally sure, but I imagine that's going to be the overall consensus.
Cannot be done.
I believe the phone itself couldn't keep up.
No enough hardware for 720p on milestone

I believe once you root the phone and overclock the hardware, it should run video at 720p

is this true?
how would u go about enabling 720p video recording?
that would be awesome!
i have already rooted and overclocked to 900mhz
I don't know if is it possible since we can't even play 720p .mkv videos, which I believe needs less cpu/ram power than recording 720p videos in high frame rate.
Furthermore, Milestone's camera isn't that good at all, why you would want to record a 720p video with a bad camera sensor?
with camera.apk change this is possible?
Playing 720p files is perfectly possible, but recording, hmm maybe at 24 or less FPS so why bother I prefer D1 at 24+ FPS, than laggy 720p,
It should be 720p video recording min requirements are 30 fps rate. Nexus one at best have 25fps. Our phone runs from 30 without root even motorola has specs sheet.. I think it was Verizon who told Motorola not to add 720P video recording. Just to make users upgrade to Droid Incredible and Droid x . In the Froyo update to Droid Last Summer. Milestone will get 720 p video recording in the new update 2.2 os in Europe. You can always talk to Matt from Motorola to verified my statement.

Hi cry3200, could you tell me how do you play 720p .mkv videos??
It's the only thing I wish my Milestone could do and can't get it done. My videos don't play flawlessly whatever video-player/settings I've tried.
I only get 720p+ videos and I would love to play them in my Milestone without having to encode them in lower quality...
Hi there,
first off all i don't need this feature on my phone...
It doesn't make sense to me if the video resolution is higher than the display resolution.
Anyway, no doubt it is quite interesting thing from the technical point of view.
At least some things should be fulfilled:
- hardware support for 720p
- enough bandwitdh on the memory subsystem
- application to handle HD video files
So i took a look into the processors datasheet:
Code:
· XGA - 1024 ´ 768 VESA timings at 60 fps (pixel clock = 63.5 MHz)
· WXGA - 1280 ´ 800 VESA timings at 59.91 fps (pixel clock = 71 MHz)
· SXGA+ - 1400 ´ 1050 direct drive of LCD with minimal blanking at 50 fps (pixel clock = 75
MHz)
· HD 720p - 1280 ´ 720 CEA 861-D timings at 60 fps (pixel clock = 74.25 MHz)
Looks like hardware would basically supporting this.
From my point of view the rest of hardware should be powerful enough to handle it as well (at least it is a SoC with PoP memory).
There's also a high speed connection to the display.
Last but not least the CPU is very similar too the one used on beagleboard.
AFAIK you may play HD on this hardware.
IMHO there might be some trouble on the milestone because of the resolution missmatch.
Please correct me if i'm wrong!

scholbert

Just use VPlayer, set the quality in options to Speed or High Quality, and experiment with the buffer for different container types, MKV files should not exceed your card speed I use a class 10 card but the stock is a class 2, but usually I use MP4 720p files that I encode from MKV 1080p, I encode on the GPU so by the time I drink a coffe and smoke a cigarette its almost encoded, original MKV 720p has some audio/video sync issues with VPlayer so I dont use them, but if you overclock to 1.2 or 1.25GHz the sync problems are gone, I dont really remember a bit rate to tell you for encoding, but try with 2000-3000kb/s and see if it works I usually use between 3000-4000kb/s with my card
Just experiment,
EDIT: Forgot to mention, not all of the movies encoded play flawlessly but I'd say that 90 percent of them work, but keep in mind you need to overclock to 1GHz minimum so if you don't want to do that it wont work, and use FroyoMod cause its the fastest and most stable rom available, Gingerbread has problems with VPlayer it just crashes; but the problem is VPlayer itself
Thank you for your answer.
- The only reason i wanted this to work out-of-the-box is to not have to encode, etc.. Just copy the files in SD Card and press Play..
- I am always in 1.1GHz, I will try 1.2GHz..
- I encoded a couple of 720p .mkv files in MP4 with excellent (same I think..) quality with Handbrake and they played absolutely fine in Milestone. I just want to avoid this encoding process.
I will follow your advice and see what happens. First of all I guess I have to change the stock mSD with one faster.
Thanks for all the replies regarding this. I just figured that since the camera sensor has the pixels it should be able to fire out the extra res. I'm not concerned with the screen mismatch as the videos don't get played back on device, they get put on my computer and youtibe, both of which will benefit from the extra pixels.

Hello everybody. I am going out of town next week for business and wanted to be able to take some movies and shows that I have downloaded with me to play on my tab 2 7.0. They are 720p MKV files and I was thinking about reencoding them to try to shrink the file size down a bit. I know just lowering the res will help do that some but any other thoughts on file type bit rate ect?
I want to maintain as good a quality as I can but lower the file size. The original files look and play great but are a bit big, I only have a 16gb microSD. Thanks for any tips, I'm sure some of you have some experience with this.
Thanks!
I use avs video converter. The filesize is about 800MB for 2 hours of non-HD video. It's easy and works well. You can start multiple sessions.
BTW - I have not used many others.
Are there specific settings you use? A profile for the tab?

try out ripbot264 its a great free little app try the iphone profile
the tablet is pretty decent with media files although I prefer AAC audio for its efficiency at lower bit rates, we dont need 5.1
bit rate is a bit of a Q really, try CRF and try some numbers till your find a decent trade off between quality and size

Here you go.....See attached...
I use xVid4PSP 5 they have a bunch of tablet options, none specifically for the gtab 2 but you can easily pick one according to the res. If you dont absolutely have to have stunning clarity, the psp settings work really well, you will only notice the res difference if you look closely. Some movies I've been able to get down to about 300mb and still look good. But xvid does a good job of retaining clarity and reducing file size while not allowing it to be anamorphic. Just my two cents!
h.264 will give much better results than xvid though, best to use that if you can
may I suggest a better alternative?
get a 32GB microSD card. I just randomly looked on Amazon and they have
a nice Sandisk 32GB microSD for only $20, delivered.(assuming you have
Prime, if not add a couple of bucks for shipping) $20 is nothing.... it's
less than two movie tickets.
you instantly double your storage capacity without the need to waster hours
trying to shrink your 720p mkv files. (but if you still want to shrink them,
your new 32GB will hold twice as many movies!) At 800mb per movie,
that card will hold almost 40 movies! Probably enough time to circle the
globe in a 747.
better yet, if you can spare $69, you can get a Sandisk 64GB microSDXC
card that has been proven to work on the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. I personally saw
it working on my friend's GT2 7.0. All he did was put the card in the reader,
formatted it to FAT32 via a PC, then inserted the card back to the GT2 7.0.
Now that's a LOT of storage for movies.
Since this isn't specific to phones, I'm moving it to off-topic to see if you can get any help in there.
Thread moved.
Searching the internet I found that there are classes of microSD cards. I noticed that my microSD card class is 4.
Really a MicroSD Class 10 will make a difference in my Xperia Z as recordings FullHD videos faster, photos, etc ?!?!
Compensate I buy a new MicroSD ?!?

you will find it might be slightly faster but the place you will see it is copying files from the computer to the card

But in relation to recording FullHD videos or even access to the photos of the album, there is an improvement?!?!
No improvement on quality.
The only difference you will notice for recording is that your pictures and movies will be stored faster

I noticed an improvement in speed of recording videos and photos!
Access to videos became much faster!
First time im posting here, I read a lot before posting about modifications to make the Heat threshold higher before the cores get unplugged, I have never modified a cellphone in my life, so I dont understand anything to much. Currently im having a problem with a Xperia X Performance I bought for 388 new from a amazon sale. Phone works perfect and I can't complain, but there's only one thing, I bought it cause of its video recording and photo capabilities, I haven't had a problem taking picture, but while recording video, no matter if it is at 30fps or 60fps, my recording stutters at random times, and after 2 minutes of recording it gives me a overheating message.
I am guessing the sutter comes from the heating itself that makes the phone go crazy, I read the max temperature on default it holds before going nuts is 47cº, and theres a mod to make it go to 56º or more before going nuts. If this is the problem then could someone help me or explain me how to modify it? Or if the video stutter ir something else I would appreciate some help! I need it to work before the 27th because im leaving a on 3 month trip and need to record a lot, bought 5 SD 64gb 90mb/s cards as they are the best for filming.
Thank you!
From what i've found, seems like rooting and unlocking a xperia X performance device is way harder than a normal device....
