Astro and file system - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are these directories I get in Astro when O press the up icon? I thought you could only access the SD directories. Stock 2.2 no root.

You can access root but you. Can't view the folders unless you use something like root explorer

I can enter and view any and all the folders. I have not tried to change anything and I do not intend to. I just wasn't aware you could access these without Root. I never could on the Milestone.

Where are .apk's from Market downloads stored

I've done searches, but, cannot find this. I have found several .apk's in /system/app but, those appear just to be what they would seem, system apps.
I'm looking to backup my items such as lightening Bug, iHeartRadio, Jorte, WiFi Analyzer, Beautiful Widgets etc. that I have downloaded from the Market to a folder on my hard drive, just because, 1, I have the space, and 2, if something happens and those things disappear from the Market, I want to be able to install them again should I ever have to wipe my phone or decide to pay with different ROM's which I may very well do. I have ES File explorer, but, I still cannot find where these files are.
Thanks!
Use titanium backup to back them up and access easily. As for originally I have no idea.

I'm using ES File Explorer, and at the top, I am in /
down in the list I see
dev
etc
mnt
proc
to name a few, I also see data, but, when I choose data, it says Empty Folder.
From the Market, these files are downloaded to the device, right, not the SD card. I am using Titanium Backup, but, I also would like to have a backup of the backup, to be safe. One backup is never enough.
Thanks.
I use root explorer and when I open it up there is a data folder that has a sub folder called app and they are all in there....

They are downloaded to /cache on 2.1 or below, then installed to /data/app. Es won't see it, you need root explorer or do commands as root in adb or terminal. If using a2sd, you still go to /data/app but the folder is symlinked to your ext partition on sdcard.
Froyo is a little different. It downloads to /sdcard/download, and is installed to /data/app if internal or, if external, /mnt/asec which points to a .android-secure folder on your sdcard fat partition.

ES will do it if you are on CM. In ES, you need to go to Settings. Then at the very bottom of settings you should see root options. Enable those and tell it you are using CM. Now you will be able to see the /data contents.
Thanks. This did work too, but now I already have Root Explorer too. But I'm sure it will come I'm handy. Thanks again.

Cannot paste music player?

Im trying to use the old music player .apk that someone posted in this section. But everytime I go to paste it keeps giving me this stupid error that there isn't enough free space which is bs. Cause there is. How do I fix this? Im running phoenix

Are you rooted? You need to be rooted to write to the /system/app/.
Which file browser are you using? I don't use Phoenix, but I believe that the "My Files" app does not allow root access. SuperManager or Astro are good apps that both allow you to write to root folders.

Top right corner of root explorer has a mount r/w button. Use it and problem solved.

Root explorer

I know most of you here already have and use root explorer, as it is THE most important app to have if rooted. But for those that do not have it, it is on sale through the amazon app store for .99, its usually 3.99 and is will worth the full price. Just thought I would pass that along to you guys!

What exactly does root explorer let you do? I know dumb question but I have to ask.
It is a file manager and more. It gives you full access to all files on your phone with root. You can change system apps, edit files, etc. If nothing else it is a great way to manage your files on sd card.

Ok I get it. It's like Astro which is currently on my phone. Thanks
Another explorer that has root access that I use sometimes is ES Explorer.
ES is like root explorer, except it can access LAN shares, FTP, etc... Really a complete package. The interface is not necessarily as simple as Root Explorer, but the extra functionality definitely comes in handy sometimes.
ES File Explorer is great. I use it more then Root Explorer. If ES gave you the option to "mount r/w" like Root does, i think I would never use Root.
I am using root explorer myself and love it. Lets you change file permissions and shows all file types. I used es explorer but root explorer is much better!

Doesn't give you access to the cache folder like root will.

Not to brag but ive been a android user since the G1 and root explorer allows any things. For one after i rooted my joint, I instantly removed all verizon crap from my data/app folder as well as the .dex files to go along with it. It also has the r/w ability so you can extract .apk files.
I also have an Epic 4G and do some mods on it as well. If you guys need questions answered feel free to PM me

[Q] Rooted ICS: Can't Remove System Apps (Titanium Backup, ADB, or Root Explorer)

I can't seem to remove system apps on my ICS Rooted Note. (Alba V2.2)
I tried titanium backup, adb command line, and rootexplorer.
Anybody have a solution?

If you enable write and can past a file into the system folder then you should be able to remove system apps. If you phone is connect to the PC even if you have root you might not be able to write or delete a file.

It seems that you don't have full root privileges. Use Root Explorer and try to paste a file into /system folder.
If you cannot do it, you don't have root. That's why your root apps cannot do their job.
I do have root privledges.
Whatekse can be the cause?

You can use rootexplorer to first make the system directory read/write then change the name of the system apps you don't want. I usually just remove the "."beween the apk name and apk... Then reboot...

I'd take a second look and make sure. I think you'll find that Chas was right.

I aslo have the same problem with RR V1 JB.
I can delete system apps with Root Explorer but not with TB.
What could be the reason for that?

Edit sysem files without root

Open Explorer is an app for NOOKcolor which is in beta, but it gives you access to system files and lets you edit them! This is perfecr if you don't want to root your Nook to get root access.
How do you expect people to install without root?

You still need root to modify the system files with open explorer. You can access them, copy them, even modify them, but you cannot copy them back without root.
Actually now I believe it is only writable and copy-able (you can copy it to the sdcard and other directories). No modifying or deleting. Still it's an interesting way to see your files.
