Are you rooted? You need to be rooted to write to the /system/app/.
Which file browser are you using? I don't use Phoenix, but I believe that the "My Files" app does not allow root access. SuperManager or Astro are good apps that both allow you to write to root folders.

Top right corner of root explorer has a mount r/w button. Use it and problem solved.

Astro and file system

What are these directories I get in Astro when O press the up icon? I thought you could only access the SD directories. Stock 2.2 no root.
You can access root but you. Can't view the folders unless you use something like root explorer

I can enter and view any and all the folders. I have not tried to change anything and I do not intend to. I just wasn't aware you could access these without Root. I never could on the Milestone.

Anyone have a fix for annoying handcent issue?

Greetings...
I have an annoying issue with handcent where when I change the theme to Black background the settings do not save and a pop up message indicating Release Notes appears anytime I launch the program.
Does anyone have a solution for this issue? I found this thread but none of the solutions are available for my phone.
http://handcent.com/bbs2/index.php?topic=4506.0
I also noticed that my settings in GOSMS do not save either.
Thanks in advance.
SGS i9000M, Darky's 9.3, Hardcore SpeedMod Kernel.
Go to dbdata/databases and delete the folder for handcent and gosms (com.jb.mms)

When I go to dbdata, it is empty. I don't see the databases folder and I have view hidden folders option enabled. As well, my phone is rooted.
You need root explorer or
Sufbs or other file explorers

I thought about that so I loaded "file manager", "mini file manager" but didn't see it there either. I will give either root explorer or look for others.
So I gave myself root access to a utility called Super Manager and was able to see the databases file. Removed the handcent file as previously mentioned and all is good now.

[Q] Market won't recognize sideloaded apps

It seems that since updating to the AT&T 2.2 Froyo update and rooting the market will not recognize any side loaded apps that have been added to the phone since upgrading to 2.2. All apps that I side loaded on 2.1 are recognized and can be updated but nothing on 2.2. Anyone else have this problem and if so have you been able to fix this issue?
I used SuperOneClick to root the phone and did a reboot the phone afterward to allow side loading of apps and it is working. I am still using the adb install command to side load all my apps, is this wrong?
If this is something that is not to be discussed I apologize now.
Well I don't have a direct answer to your question but since you are rooted I highly suggest you go and get Titanium Backup along with atrackdog.
The former application will alloa you to backup any applications you want (or aall of them) and then save them to your computer. you can then move the folder to any phone and use Titanium to reinstall the applications exactly where you left off. That means launchers will have the same layouts and games will still have their save states.
The latter will allow you to check the update status of those applications since they won't show up as downloaded applications from the market.

Titanium Backup has been installed since rooted on 2.1 but will have to check out atrackdog. Thanks for the help so far.

side loaded paid apps will NEVER show in market.
free ones can be restored...
tibu has never been able to restore market links for me either.
there used to be a program MCleaner but it got taken off the market..
but all it did was this (do it yourself)
Menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage Apps > All > Market
- force stop
- clear data
- clear cache (if availavle)
restart market > my apps

Actually, it does. Market only keeps track of the apps you buy/download through it. What you're asking is like expecting Wal-Mart to know what you bought from Target.
Hey guys I just had a question while reading through the replies.
I downloaded atrakdog and got a list of all the apps needed to be updated.
One of the apps was the market..
Mine is version 2.3.4
I need to update to 5.0.12
How do you update market? Btw I'm running cm7 does this effect it?
Sent from my phone
Market should update automatically. As far as the sideload apps you can. Also get root explorer and copy paste them to system/app then reboot and they'll all be there.

So your are saying instead of using adb installer just do a drop and drag to the system/app folder and install them that way? Now will that put them in the market place? I don't quite understand what you are really saying here. Excuse my ignorance.

That's exactly what I was thinking was moving the file to the system/app file then reinstalling the .apk first then doing the 3 button reboot to see if it would recognize the app on the market. I did try just a 3 button reboot after side loading a few apps using ADB Installer and just doing the normal drop and drag to the sim card and I know that doesn't recognize them. I am going to try and reinstall one of my apps that way and I will let you know if it shows up or not.
When trying to move a new .apk file to the system/app file it says "You cannot paste here because the file system is a read-only."

You have to click the small window at the top of the screen in root explorer that changes r/o to r/w. You have to do that in each directory you want to edit.

Root explorer

I know most of you here already have and use root explorer, as it is THE most important app to have if rooted. But for those that do not have it, it is on sale through the amazon app store for .99, its usually 3.99 and is will worth the full price. Just thought I would pass that along to you guys!

What exactly does root explorer let you do? I know dumb question but I have to ask.
It is a file manager and more. It gives you full access to all files on your phone with root. You can change system apps, edit files, etc. If nothing else it is a great way to manage your files on sd card.

Ok I get it. It's like Astro which is currently on my phone. Thanks
Another explorer that has root access that I use sometimes is ES Explorer.
ES is like root explorer, except it can access LAN shares, FTP, etc... Really a complete package. The interface is not necessarily as simple as Root Explorer, but the extra functionality definitely comes in handy sometimes.
ES File Explorer is great. I use it more then Root Explorer. If ES gave you the option to "mount r/w" like Root does, i think I would never use Root.
I am using root explorer myself and love it. Lets you change file permissions and shows all file types. I used es explorer but root explorer is much better!

Doesn't give you access to the cache folder like root will.

Not to brag but ive been a android user since the G1 and root explorer allows any things. For one after i rooted my joint, I instantly removed all verizon crap from my data/app folder as well as the .dex files to go along with it. It also has the r/w ability so you can extract .apk files.
I also have an Epic 4G and do some mods on it as well. If you guys need questions answered feel free to PM me

Edit: Removed file as OP reported as not working
Nah didn't work it just said application not installed

It will say application not installed. You just have to put it in \system\app, fix the permissions and reboot.
You don't have to install it like other apps.

I am posting the deleted apps zip in the slim thread right now, sorry for the delay. You will probably have to use a root explorer and put applicationmanager.apk into the /system/app folder and you may have to restart afterwards
