This may give us some sense on how widespread the issue is. No answers based on informal fixes please.
Meaningless poll.
As long as samsung won't move the app data to the ROM instead of the internal SD, there will be a lag when opening some of the apps.
Menus flow swiftly, though.
Coming from a HTC Touch HD the lag is nonexistent in my view, what stutters people seem to be complaining about are pretty much nonevents to me.
mine had a lag (received today)...until i updated the firmware to JG3. BIG difference now
^
Now this is new to me, is JG3 compatible with UK devices?

It may be meaninless to you, but I would like to have a sense, before purchasing the phone, if this is a widespread issue or just a matter involving few noisy owners. If this is a widespread issue and I need to rely on Samsung's not so impressing update reputation, I may wait a little bit.

You have to remember, people who come into forums are the one with problems.
Nobody goes to the doctors office and say, "Look I'm healthy and I have no problems." and just walk out. Only those with problems or concerns walk into a doctors office, no?

Not these forums. People come to XDA not only with problems but to learn more about their phone and share experiences, especially those early adopters who buy the phone right away.
I sometimes have a bit of lag, but nothing that makes me think, "why did I buy this phone", for me the Galaxy S is everything I wanted from a Android phone, it's powerful, screen is beautiful and it runs all my apps very smoothly.
The lags happened very rarely and most times the phone is snappy. Such things happened to all phones, even my wife's iphone. Still much better than winmo where most things lagged big time.
Though after I switched to using autokiller with aggressive setting, I dun get the lags anymore. My free memory also stay above 100mb all the time without me having to kill any apps manually
I disabled the samsung widgets and i am alot better now.

But the thing with your example is, is it really deleting the email in 1 second or is it just displaying the email is gone and just spending 9 seconds in the background actually deleting it?
It's nothing to make it appear that the email has actually gone while it actually does the work in it's own time.

I was using it for over a week, then flashed JG3. Lags seems pretty much gone with this firmware.
I got quite horrendous lag at times on the original firmware (JF3).
Now I am on JG1 with the MoDaCo R2 ROM and Autokiller (set to aggressive originally, now trying on optimum) and I don't seem to get much lag at all, if any. It is like a different phone.
Unfortunately I did have to do a factory reset last night but that was other problems - I do hope that's not a regular occurrence though.
when I say it's a lag i mean that during 10 to 30 sec the phone is blocked with the popup box where you hit the button delete.
I must confess I don't reallycare if the mail is really gone or not in 1s ... what I know is that I have to wait 20sec to be able to open a new mail.
If the iphone is smart enough to display the mail as deleted and let me work on another one while it is really deleting the mail on the background ... it might mean that it has 2 years of advance compared to my phone as it is now. I prefer to believe that's not the case
last night I couldn't get the phone to accept my unlock pattern. had to turn it off completely and then turn it on again...
by "not accept" i mean the screen wouldn't light up red or green when i was swiping my finger over it and the screen would turn on and off.
I'm doing a factory reset now.
I also can't use the kies program - the mtp application flicks on and off.
hoping the factory reset will solve my problems...

I understand that you may have issues but this has nothing to do with a lag, which is what this poll and thread all about.
I just tested mine now, I have the stock JF3(?) ROM that came with the phone, I deleted an email from my Hotmail, and replied to a different email in 2 seconds, no lag in email at all.

I noticed lag sometimes on my JF3 but only when using Yahoo Mail application (from Yahoo Inc.), it just stuck in black screen at either email-loading or going back for some seconds (and many times pop-up came-up to Force Close the application _but_ after some seconds application came back).
This is the only lag I am facing related to emails. Other lag I some time notice in Dolphin HD browser when opening it first time OR switching to new link. Default browser is very fast as compare to this.
I'm having some issues with my G1 with 3G and data connectivity in general. I'm not posting to ask for help on fixing that, although I won't object to help, I'm posting to ask for two ROMs for both Eclair and FroYo. I need to discount CyanogenMod since those are the main ones I run and it happens in both to a degree and my troubleshooting will be better if I know it isn't a ROM specific issue.
I'm aware that there are known issues (with no fix) that others have with both Eclair and FroYo releases of CM right now but it seems different and I want to be sure that it isn't my phone. The reason I'm posting to ask for recommendations is that I'm sure a lot of people are aware there are a lot of ROMs floating around that are little besides blatant rips of other people's work. I want to avoid that since it won't help at all and if it is a rip of someone elses work it will give the same results.
i tried like 6 or 7 Froyo releases the last month
for me the best 2 are:
Froyo Redux (CM 6)
SpeedTeam Froyo
in Speedteam: i got a problem with the market. downloading stopped working after a day of use with it. besides that, its really nice and fast!
biffmod it had FC's every 10 seconds with the "ime_input" blabla, fu**ed me off, so i deinstalled. couldn't really test it.
froyo redux: it begins lagging after a while of use, but i used it the most until now! like for a week or so! it reacts fast when getting a call, looks nice (install launcherpro for more speed in launcher/homescreen) menu's go really fast and it loads really fast too! For me the best Froyo by now!
chromatic : the style was to dark
SuperFast/stupid Fast: after install i had many FC's -> Deinstalled
Super-F : works fine the most but has problems with some files and cant play mp3 files !! WTF ??
Hope i could help u a little

Try: Htcclay Superfly d/s v1.1 - Froyo 2.2
http://androidspin.com/2010/08/07/rom-htcclay-superfly-tcby-v1-1-for-dream-g1/
Absolutely love this one. Market slow on this one but that seems to be on all of the 2.2's.
Thanks for the replies I've given Chromatic a try while I waited for replies and it seems to be the most reliable for 3G that I'd tried to that point. I switched out to Cannon's Eclair as well and that seemed to be good too. Chromatic seemed a little sluggish but no more than other FroYo ROMs. The main sluggish thing that I can't stand is text entry using the virtual keyboard. That seems to be a constant across all FroYo ROMs so far.
tranceonline, you saved me a lot of flashing with that summary so yes you did help I'm going to have a look at FroYo Redux in a little while.
crz6662, testing out the one you recommended now and it seems about the same as most FroYo ROMs, do you notice any stuttering when using the virtual keyboard? It seems to be a bit on / off like it will work for the first letter or two, freeze while you're pressing keys and then a second later you'll see all the keys appear. I can't stand it >_< I don't know if it's the ROMs, the keyboard IME or a combination of both.

Can't say I've noticed but I usually use the keyboard anyway since it's a bit faster for me. You could download couple of the other on screen keyboards out there and see if it's the same.Try this one: attached Handcent. If it works on Froyo. Noticed a screen flicker on CM 6.0.0 though. Might just be my phone.?
I've learned a couple of things today, playing again.
Main reason I rooted/flashed was for apps2sd. Don't put upfront tasks, ie: Homescreen launchers, on-going service apps, mail, messaging, etc. on the SD, leave them on internal memory.
I was putting everything on the SD and it took forever to reload home screen coming out of an app and returning home. Don't ask about rebooting. It took forever to load the widgets and get up and running. Got to thinking about the slower speed of the SD versus the phone. So after installing approx 150 apps I said screw it, wiped everything, and reformatted the card.
Dropped swap to 32MB, ext2 512, & fat32.
Now I'm being careful what gets put to the card. Homescreen now boots and loads much better from the phone. Was reading about partitioning and in some cases larger swap slows up the phone considerably so they say. Why the 1 ROM I did suggested 96MB for swap is beyond me. Just don't run a "bunch" of apps at the same time and you won't need much swap. Some have suggested eliminating it altogether. Don't know bout that.
Much snappier performance now. Boots up fast and 3G is no problem.
Might hold off loading apps and try that Froyo Redux 1st. Haven't seen that one.
Later. Learn by doing
I've had a 16gb Samsung Galaxy S on Three in the UK since they launched last year, and it's the only Android phone I've used.
It's pretty laggy, but since I'd read a lot about Galaxy lag online, I assumed this was to be expected.
However, I had to help a colleague with a problem on their HTC Wildfire today (a lower spec phone, as far as I know), and was amazed how much more responsive than my Galaxy S.
It didn't seem to show any of the laggy, hanging-ey behaviour I experience. I have more apps installed than the Wildfire, but I'm quite careful not to install anything that's going to run at startup or cause problems (mostlly just games, no widgets, etc.)
As an example, if I turn the phone on clean, wait for everything to be loaded and ready (media scanning to finish, etc.) then poke the "Market" button, it takes 28 seconds for it to be loaded and responsive. Close that, poke the Facebook button, over 20 seconds until I'm shown the news feed. Sometimes when the phone rings on my desk, I literally won't be able to get it to respond enough to answer the call before the caller hangs up. If I try to switch from program to program, I end up getting quite a lot of frustrating 20-30s hangs and pauses. This is all on a decent wifi connection, so the problem isn't data related.
The question is - how laggy should a Galaxy S be? Would it work better if I added an SD card (with the 16gb phone memory, I didn't see the need)? Is it worth installing a lagfix under Froyo (I tried one back on 2.1, but didn't notice a huge amount of difference)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think its sometimes very busy rebuilding it's wifi connection. Or some other process.
Am not sure.

I didn't see any speed difference with SD card IN/OUT so i don't think you will have faster phone by inserting it (SD card).
Why don't you try a reset and see if that works? Also are you on eclair or froyo because that would make a world of difference if you upgraded
I just got my sgs from bell Canada last Tuesday. It has all stock with launcherpro and a few Widgets. So far (knock wood) its been a big step up over my HTC dream. I experience maybe 10 seconds of startup lag and then for the rest of the day its awesome. My firmware version is the newest one bell offers (jl2 Frito). What android version are you running?

That's exactly my experience. The only way to solve it is with a good lagfix and/or flashing JPY firmware
This will get almost instant loading of apps and only minor lags when switching apps. It's still slow when scrolling icons and such... my previous phone, iphoe 3g, is still faster than this crap-phone
Cheers,
Soulbrighter
My Galaxy S was laggy as hell brand new out of the box. Sometimes it would hang for what seemed like 10 seconds. I didn't like the Samsung launcher anyway, so I did my homework, made sure I could get into 3-button download mode, and then rooted, wiped and flashed a custom Froyo ROM. I've tried a few ROMs since then and have landed on Insanity with EXT4 lagfix.
Now my Galaxy S is _awesome_ ... I don't even bother overclocking it, everything is smooth.
try a task killer and set it up to auto kill when screens goes off done a few tests with it ,one with no killer and one with and the one with was faster and had no lag fix running too go to the market and get quadrant standard try it for yourself and see
What's the current firmware you're using ? I suggest flashing to JPY and testing it out.
Update to JPY!
If not possible, install a lagfix on your current ROM/kernel.
The amount of lag you describe is terrible, I have never seen it that bad...
I don't think the lag should be that bad, I did experience some occassional lag back on eclair, but never exceeded 5-10 seconds. Usually after loading whatever that app was once, it'd be okay on the next open too.
Since I've upgraded to JPY i see 1-2 second lag extremely rarely.
Maybe you can get a task manager and see if anything is hogging memory?
Thanks for all the responses. The firmware is FROYO.XXJPO, so I'll definitely try flashing to JPY and will report back! Thanks so much for the tip!
I got my captivate on launch day (well 2 days after due to shipping) I stayed with stock for awhile and just did the lag fix.. it was ok.. i think the first rom i did was cognition.. or perception one or the other then did the other after that.. ran those for a bit.. tried CM7 (i think that was in january?) then firefly then something else and then netflix hit.. and i went to Continuum (v5.4.1) and thats where i sit now.. and i'm about really to go back to a iphone (also i REALLY REALLY hate that idea.. i like the iphone it self but i cant stand apple)
heres my main issues. lockups and slow downs. my phone hasnt ever been prone to locking up. until about a month or so ago (a week or 2 after flashing continuum_) so i'm guessing its something i installed that continuum dosnt like or its continuum it self.. with way it looks like i'm probably gonna be flashing something else no idea what.. what ever it is i want to to support netflix (Suggestions?) as far as slow downs.. the away it sits now if i open up the browser and do a search then back out of that to my home screen it takes it a good 5-10 seconds to load the icons and widgets on my home screen.. very annoying might not seem like much very it dose get VERY old
i know most of that is due to the rom.. but that also brings up another concern i've having..
I like android.. i really do love the live wallpapers altho halk the time i dont have one selected due to it might be slowing down my phone (see above).. when updating apps on my phone (say having 2-3 apps to update and clicking the update all button) makes the phone SOOO laggy (had this on all roms i've used) that i cant even receive a phone call untill its done downloading and installing them all.. thats annoying but i can live with it.. another issue.. turning on wifi/bluetooth.. i turn off my wifi every day when i goto work np.. get off at 6am come home goto bed.. wake up and usually check my email ect.. and before that i turn on my wifi.. about 15% of the time it wont turn on.. it says error in the setting menu.. try a few times.. still error.. do i have to reboot the phone.. just to turn wifi on.. bluetooth does the same thing.. except alot less often (mainly because i only use bluetooth for my stereo headphone and thats maybe once a week)
now alot of that can probably be traced back to roms.. but.. if i want to keep using android am i going to have to constantly be changing roms to try and find whats the best? so far i'm flashing a new rom about every month (i know some of you do it every week)... and really i just want one thats gonna work.. all the time.. i know wheres gonna be bugs every now and then even teh jesus phone has them and has to be updated..but when it take my 15 seconds to unlock my phone because i just gotta text message and the screen fade out right as i pull it outta my pocket is getting old
now for hardware side LOL.. main issue.. the damn capacitive buttons i've made a post about this before.. and i know theres not much that can be done.. but MAN are they annoying.. 1/2 i have to repetatly hit the buttons just for them to see that i've hit them at all... some times its 10-20 times before i picks up that i hit the back button at all (i use back the most) The gps.. well at first (stock) was HORRIBLE 20 minutes to get a lock.. the last few roms i've used have worked better (usually gets a like in under 30 seconds but some times loses it.. for no real reason like i drive under a tree for 1 second.. but i RARELY use the gps.. last time i used it was months ago so not sure how i would work actually driving now.. usually use it for google maps and such
apps.. (here is the only point i'm gonna compare apple and android).. we all know apple has more apps blah blah blah.. BUT android isnt THAT far behind in number or apps.. my issue with them is 'polish' or quality of apps.. not sure if this is that iOS is easier to make thinks look 'good' or what but.. if you look at.. say HD wallpaper apps on android .. thes a ton of them and they all have a very.. plain GUI nothing special about them.. iOS seems to be better looking.. no necessarily better content but been GUI to the apps i do like the openness of the android market just about anything and everything is all in 1 market (altho i am liking amazons market free app a day) when as iOS you have the app store and cydia (and installious if you choose). your not gonna find any SNES emulators on the app store but you can find them on cydia where as on android they are all in the market (altho they did just purge them a bit ago but i'm starting to see them come back)
One thing i have noticed sence i got my andoid i play less games on it then i did my iphone
I know this has been kinda a rant and hopefully you can help me.. i do like my captivate.. but at the same time i am due for a upgrade anytime i want.. and i dont really see anything coming out on ATT that is really any better then my captivate (captivate runs everything i've tried just fine.. excpet needing certian roms for netflix and no hulu app support yet)
I guess i'm just looking for the fence see the greener grass.. logicly i know its no better... but the idea if just using it and not having alot of the issues i'm having now sounds VERY nice...
Sounds like you should wipe your system. I would recommend using Titanium Backup, especially the Pro version as it can automate the backup/restore process. Search around the forums and you can find how to go back to either stock 2.2 or 2.3. See if that makes a difference for ya.
I can understand your frustrations with the phone, especially in the lagginess area. Just out of curiousity, what launcher are you using? Sometimes that can have an effect on your overall perceived speed. Also, if you haven't already done this, go into display settings and change your screen timeout to something longer. That might stop that particular annoyance.
I don't know what widgets you're using, but in general, the more widgets you have going, the more sluggish your phone will be. You could also try switching background data off (or at least auto-syncing), as that can slow things down, too.
As far as stability goes, if you're in the Gingerbread world, right now, things aren't going to be ultra-stable. Development of roms overall right now is going well, but it's still in an earlier stage of development. If you need stability, it might be best to head to Froyo for a while, where there are a lot of good, solid roms that would probably suit your needs. (Can't comment on netflix, as I don't use that app.)
You may find that your capacitive buttons become more responsive as you remove other lag factors, but I can't guarantee that. It's a little bit of the nature of the beast.
The gaming area on Android isn't as developed as the iOS version, but there are still some good quality games out there. Give Dungeon Defenders a shot (if that's your sort of thing), or Backbreaker, or Robo Defense. All of these look pretty good and are a lot of fun.
Ultimately, just like the previous poster said, a system wipe and restart might do you some good. Just back up the things that are crucial, and see where a "format internal sd" gets you.

Also remember that restoring data saved from a 2.2 based rom can cause issues if you are restoring to new GB based rom. If you want a rom that just works then u would say stay stock. As for your apps reloading I see this alot when people load way tooo many shortcuts on their homescreen. With the folder programs and app drawers there is no real reason for having more then say 5 or 6 shortcuts on a single page of the launcher.

^ What zelendel said.
You could also try Zeam launcher. I've used that one in the past, and it's pretty snappy. Also, try turning the weather updates off on the fancy widget for a couple of days and see if that helps.
It doesn't have to be a never-ending cycle. In the same vein as what zelendel is suggesting, it might be worthwhile just to see how much you can simplify your interface and still live with how it works. I recently went from having 5 screens of shortcuts to 3, and I've noticed that the phone seems snappier overall.
Flash to stock KF1 Gingerbread and remove the bloatware. It runs Netflix great and I don't have many lag problems. If I do its when I'm trying to run music while browsing the internet while texting and having games open in the background. Other than that it really is a solid build since its straight from Samsung and isn't having to use a reoriented kernel. If that isn't what you like then try Serendipity 7, I tried GR-12 when Serendipity was in its early stages and it was nice, but I like the idea of having the *proper bootloaders (whether it really makes a difference, I don't know, but placebos are powerful).

Hello Community!!
I am seeing a problem with my Revo, and I'm putting it out here because you guys are good at finding answers.
I am running Gingervolt 1.3 with the blitzkreig kernel installed. I have previously tried Hicks' little ICS responsiveness script.
Here is my problem. Most days after little to moderate use, Phone/text, I have to reboot my phone by either soft reboot (power button) or a hard reboot (battery pull) because nothing at all is responding. By nothing I mean, touch the screen..nothing, open a program...nothing...etc.
It is a slow degrade sometimes where (and my wife has mentioned it using my phone) that the touch screen is really really laggy and non responsive, especially when using a keyboard or even trying to play angry birds.
I have done a full wipe including data, cache, dalvik. I have formatted my internal and removable SD card, I have not used previous backups, instead resorted to downloading programs and installing from scratch.
This is a very frustrating issue. If it was a computer I'd say either the processor was overworking, or the ram was used up. But since we don't use program killers in GB I'm kind of at a loss. And I'm tired of having to wipe my phone every few days just so I have meh performance (and no, I'm not hating on the phone, or the rom or any of the developers, nor do I have any interest in changing phones, etc)
I'm just looking for suggestions/solutions etc. I'm sure I missed something in my troubleshooting steps.
Thanks in advance for those who read through this and try to give a hand. I appreciate it.
Wow. Since you've already gone to extreme measures, I'm at a loss. My suggestion would be to freeze the apps you do install to look for a culprit there. Or, don't install any and see how the phone performs.
I restored a nandroid prior to Google's 10ยข apps promo and my phone is back in fine form. It was lagging badly before that. I was rebooting daily. Now I go for days and the phone's solid.
Sent from my VS910 4G using Tapatalk
I was experiencing similar issues about a week after updating to blitzkrieg 1.0. I restored from backup and it's been stable since. I just installed 2.0 today, so I'm curious to see if it'll have the same effect.
Sent from my VS910 4G using xda premium
I can't say yet whether or not 2.0 has added to or taken away from the response type issues. I did have to do a couple of battery pulls yesterday just to get firefox to do anything. I'm going to uninstall that one. I may, just for S&G's do one more factory wipe and put all the tweaks and mods in place before downloading anything but the most essential programs. I did this phone, but the unresponsiveness sometimes can be a real pain.
What do you have it clocked at? I have issues at 1.9 so maybe back it down a bit. I get lots of screen freezes and have had some rebooting issues at 1.9

What do you have it clocked at? I have issues at 1.9 so maybe back it down a bit. I get lots of screen freezes and have had some rebooting issues at 1.9

Currently I have it at 1.7, before when it was really bad, the oc wasn't sticking and I was at 1024, so not overclocked much. I am sure its an app that is causing the problem, but I'm not sure what.
I've never had this type of issue using Blietzkreig or any of the other tweaks so I'd guess you're right in thinking it's an app. Since you've pretty much tried everything else I would say maybe try going back to complete stock then rooting again? That just seems like what I would try if I had tried everything else and nothing worked.
And yeah you definitely don't want to overclock too much because it could definitely damage the hardware of your phone since it's not meant to run at that level. But you said you had it at 1.0ghz so it doesn't seem like that is the problem unless the damage was cause when running at 1.7ghz. I had mine at 1.9 and didn't see any issues except my phone randomly started to vibrate for a while then just restart. It did that twice when i first flashed everything but it seems fine now. I brought it down to 1.0ghz just cuz i'm not really using it now and I don't want it causing any problems with the hardware.
Thanks for the Feedback everyone. I am not sure what the issue is/was/going to be. I think Firefox was a big part of it and I have since removed it. But I am still getting random freezes, almost like the deep sleep while the screen is on. Oh well, maybe I do need to go back to complete stock.
