read the stickies. especially the one titled "Odin one-click"
and wrong section, this belongs in Q&A or General
edit: whoa did this get moved when I wasn't looking or was I in Q&A already?
Flash back to stock using Odin one click.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Do yourself a favor and read the instructions in the OP, download and install the drivers on there, they are the only ones that work with Odin. Once you download the file and run it, Odin one click is already loaded with the stock Captivate just like it was out of the box. Backup your apps with Titanium Backup before flashing so when you are done you can get them back. You will loose Root when you flash.

To add to this question. I have a base of John but my update failed. I was using the ryanza lagfix but removed it. I can not use Odin to flash stock because I do not have a windows PC. Is it safe to flash cognition using clockwork?
Base of jh7
Why would you ask this question here? This is thread specific. In his thread he took away data wipe but it is now back because of issues. So what you can do is either load the newest cognition over the top or if you prefer wipe and install the zip file. Just look around the dev forum and find your answer as it is easier in the long run to know where to find the info in case you ever mess your phone up.
I can't get it to install.
I have version 2.1, with superbeast that I used for the rooter.
I followed all the wiki instructions for the cognition, but it is not working.
The first time I tried using the rom manager to load cognition, it worked, but it would never go past install multi-csc.
Now I am trying it again and it won't work at all, it just stays on the screen when I try and reboot it.
Not sure what to do, should I name the cognition folder to update, and just do the volume and power button update way?
have you tried using odin?
Not to be "that guy" but this doesn't really belong in the Development section. There's a whole other section devoted to Q&A, and you should have this moved there.
Why the heck is this not in the thread devoted to Cognition??

I think it says to use the flash method since I am not currently 2.2

it would be best to run titanium backup on your current setup so that you can get your apps back, but install cog from the odin.
(MODS, PLEASE MOVE TO Q&A)Sticky Guide for flashing custom ROMs has a broken link?
The top sticky for flashing a custom ROM has a broken link to the ODIN file I need to download. Do you guys know where I can find it now?
Try posting in the Q&A section, I'm not at my home computer right now but if your question still isn't answered by 4:00 I'll give you my link.

Do not post questions in the Development forum. That is why there is a Q&A forum.
If your phone has the 3-button issue, use this one. Otherwise, use this one.
The links in both of those threads should be active.
I have never rooted or flashed my Cappy, so I'm still on stock 2.1. Also, I have never had any issues with the 3 buttons on my device, but briefly looking at the "3-button issue" thread, that appears to be a problem only with people who have already flashed their phones, not anyone with a stock unit. So, if I wanted to root/flash my phone for the first time using the sticky thread tutorial, I would want to use the ODIN link in this thread: "[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY".

Yes, you will want to use the one from the second thread that I posted. Also, look underneath your battery. There will be a four number code (1007, 1008, etc.). What's the code on yours?
between the S/N and SKU the 4 digit number is: 1012, thena short bar code, then it says REV0.4
O wait, I only need to use ODIN if I'm not on a stock 2.1 unrooted Captivate, right?

Don't use 1 click on that build. Or you will be a sad panda.
Edit: correct no reason to flash stock from stock.
Would I be right in assuming that one-click ODIN puts an older version of the stock ROM on my phone, and I don't need to use ODIN at all because I'm not rooted and still on the stock ROM?

That assumption would be correct.
But as stated above. Never use the Odin 1 click that I posted earlier. You will indeed be a "sad panda". Your phone will be bricked.
Anyway, wait for someone else to come along and tell you which Odin to use. I'm not sure myself which one you need for your phone.
But regardless, for your first flash, you shouldn't need to wipe your phone.
I'm about to send my phone in to Samsung. They already sent me a new one.
I have used Odin to wipe it and set it back to stock firmware. But I still have Voodoo lagfix Kernel on there.
Is this going to be necessary?
If so, can anyone point me to a download of the STOCK Kernel?
And with either a way to flash it with Odin, or preferably with Clockwork Recovery, but whichever will be simpler. Just assume that I don't have either, that I'm starting with a blank slate. Whichever would be simpler from there.
Thanks.
Smart enough to mark this as a? Not smart enough to post in the q a section.
Odin should be replacing your kernal to stock. There are pinned threads with any info you need.

Will they bother to check the flash when you send it back?

I was wondering the same thing. If not, then it won't matter.
And no, Odin3 did not take me back to the original kernel.
Am I doing something wrong?
I used the Odin download that I got from [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY
Thanks for the quick responses.
Any more help would be very much appreciated.
If your flashing using ODIN 1-Click it does install the stock kernel.
Hello, I'm trying to root my samsung captivate. I originally flashed 2.3.5 using Odin a couple weeks before the official update came out. I remember seeing reinstall packages appear in the recovery screen before then but now its gone, completely vanished and I am left with the inability to root my phone. Can anyone help me?
Download 7.0A corn kernel (Odin version, not cwm) found on the development section. Flash it using Odin under PDA slot. Then use three button combo to go recovery and install root from there.
If you don't like corn kernel, search for fugu root and follow the OP instructions.

^ Agreed

Thanks, I will give that a try in hopes that it works. NExt time I will make sure to post in pre-existing threads!
ok, I think im retarded because I cant find the kernel d/l. Do either of you have a link to where I can d/l it?
