O2 Xda Stellar - wifi switches to GPRS when in standby

Hi - ive tried looking through the threads but cant find anything, so apologies if im repeating something all ready asked..
Ive been noticing on recent phone bills that im getting charged for gprs calls that i definatly havnt been making but my phone company insists that i have. After further investigating, ive seen that if im using wifi, and the phone turns to standby, when it switches back on gprs has been activated and is running underneath wifi.. and this is where (i think) my call charges have been coming from...( i hope that makes sense!)
Is this a common problem with the stellar/kaiser/tilt or just a problem with this individual unit - also, if it is a common problem is there anyway in which i can stop it happening?
I can understand where it is coming from.
When you go into standby (ie turn off the screen), the phone turns WiFi off to save battery. This makes sense, but imho WM is still too stupid to understand the concept of money. Result is that when it tries to continue doing whatever it was doing it will open a new connection and it's first choice is the GPRS/HSDPA connection.
As far as I am aware, the options to stop this from happening again are....
1) Stop WiFi from turning itself off when the phone goes into standby. I'd do this using KaiserTweak - the Option is under "Data -> Wifi standby mode"
2) Disable the GPRS connections so it can't connect. One way is to remove the password so it asks before it connects. There's also a tool on here somewhere that allows you to quickly enable and disable connections. Here looked promising, posts a link to modaco
Hope that helps.

Data Connection: Disabled?

I've just got a Touch Diamond, so I'm pretty much noobie at this. So I don't have any internet data plan from my wireless provider(att), and I don't really want 1 at the moment. With that said, here's my question(s) - When I first turned on the phone, the data connection option was on, so I turn it off. Now that option is greyed-out, or disabled. I read in the manual that you can't turn it back on if you disable it, why is this?
Even though that option is disabled, an "H", or sometimes "3G", still appears on the upper-right of the screen. Apparently the internet still works because I saw the charge on my online att account(I thought I was using Wi-Fi). Can someone who is knowledgeable in these things tell me why?
do a hard reset to fix this

Wifi Issue?

Hi all, happy Friday! I searched for my paticular issue but couldn't find anything. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue or something similar. What happens is my revo isn't automatically reconnecting to wifi when i go out of range and then back in. I will notice it's using data (4G or 3G) and when i go to wifi settings the wifi network says disabled and i have to go to it and hit connect. What's more weird is it's doing this with the wifi at work but not at home. It's not an issue with the wifi at work though because other people here have androids, iphones and blackberrys and don't have the issue. The phone has done this since i got it. I've looked at the wifi sleep setting and made sure it is set to never to rule that out. I've done several powerdowns and battery pulls since i got it also. Anyhow just wondering if anyone has heard of this. Thank you and sorry for the length of my post.
That happens on my phone as well, but will reconnect to my home network after the screen is on for a few seconds

I don't have that issue but I always turn my wifi off when I'm not using it. Better battery life plus no issues
Yeeup, I've had that exact issue on this phone from day 1. Some may not consider it a big deal, but it's actually one of my biggest pet peeves about the phone. I was hoping the V6 software update back in August would contain a fix for it, but I didn't notice a change.

While that's a valid workaround, and i'd love to do that, it's not an option for me. I have the lowest data plan you can have on a smartphone (2gb), so i have to be on wifi whenever it's available so as not to go over usage. What's odd though is the phone only seems to do this with the wireless at work. I even went somewhere this past weekend that i haven't been in a while and the phone remembered and connected right up to the wifi there. Other smartphones at work don't behave this way with the wireless at work though. I'll just have to live with it, i'm used to it now anyway. Just have to remember everytime or i'll be using up my precious data. I'm wondering if the update to gingerbread (if our revo ever get it) will do anything with this issue.
What type of security is implemented at your work? I know there is a very common problem with PEAP and MSCHAPV2 authentication and FROYO. I can connect, but as soon as I change to another antenna, I get disconnected. It is the only reason I know I want Gingerbread. It was supposed to be fixed in Gingerbread.

Good question gig, work has 2 networks. One uses PEAP and the other is for guest internet access, i have it on the guest. I gather from what you've said it wouldn't help any to try this issue on the main PEAP network.
I have an update on my issue. I was at lunch yesterday and trying to connect to the free wifi there and noticed that the wifi network at work that's been giving me problems was on the list of remembered networks twice! I have no clue how this happened (in troubleshooting i always hit forget). I didn't even know it was possible for any device to have duplicate entries of wifi networks. I deleted one of them and it seems to have worked (so far). Some other people replied saying they were having my issue too, so i wanted to update this thread in case it would fix their issue too.

Wifi Issues

Has anyone else had issues with wifi not staying off? I normally turn wifi off when I leave the house to go to work. But when I get to work I will notice when I unlock my phone that I have a pop up asking me if I want to connect to the office wifi network. I go into setting and wifi has spontaneously turned itself on. I will turn it off again but the same thing usually happens the next time I unlock my phone and open the browser. Then just now, I unlocked the phone and opened the browser and the wifi network notification popped up again, but this time I went into settings and and it says the wifi is still off. I am starting to wonder if my D4 is just screwing with me now for the fun of it. Anyone else had any issues like this?

Do you use the smart actions on the phone?
I looked into setting them up at one time and got a warning saying some of the functionality of that app required wifi being on.

That's actually a setting on the phone, where it will ask you if you would like to connect to wifi anytime an application requires a data connection. It's just to prevent you from going over your data plan. Go to your Wi-Fi settings and uncheck the "Notify Me" option under Wi-Fi autostart reminders.

I haven't messed with Smart Actions yet. Might have to look at that though.

I unchecked the notify me box. Hopefully that fixes it. Thanks!

You're welcome. Same problem was irritating me too!

[Q] ATT S6 bootloops when near unsecured WiFi

Just got my S6 yesterday. I noticed that if WiFi is on but not connected and if there is an unsecured WiFi my phone will try to automatically connect to it and then start a bootloop process. If I park near a McDonalds or in a neighborhood it happens. Everything is fine with WiFi off. There is a minute before the WiFi auto connects and I can turn the WiFi off and that is the only way to stop the loops.
Any thoughts?
Based on how new the phone is, I'd have AT&T replace it with a new unit now and see if it's still happening. There's no excuse for that to happen on brand new hardware, but maybe it is a design flaw... confirm it with a replacement.
Did you Disable some Wifi / Hotspot / Smart WiFi related stock app?
There is an option in the WiFi settings about auto-connecting, you might try turning it off. My guess is you have "Auto Connect to AT&T Hotspots" turned on, but the Smart WiFi / Hotspot application disabled, so it is failing.
Yeah I tried turning all the att auto connect off and google location scans. I also factory restored it.
Can someone with an att varient try it and let me know? I don't want a hassle to return it if it's a software error on other units too.
I was googling around and found this thread, I am having the EXACT same problem with my AT&T S6
