have a g1 1.6 build dmd64, and since i doubt there will be any more ota updates for this phone i have decided to root. i have never rooted a phone b4 but i am pretty tech savvy, i have flashed firmware on a psp b4.. i have heard that the dmd64 build cannot be rooted traditional ways, i have heard that there is a special way to root this build. Is this true? And if there is a special where would i find best guide on how to accomplish the root on dmd64? If anyone has rooted a dmd64 build b4 you are the perfect person to help me out, but any help would be great.
Yes, its true. Check out my recent thread on rooting DMD64

Hi i have a DMD64...i installed universal Androot.apk and it will work out for you...google it
Make sure you check if you are actually rooted after rooting with Universal Androot. I used it to initially try and root my G1 with DMD64 and it said it worked but I didn't have root access. I wish I could remember what I actually used to finally get it done.. let me look through my bookmarks and see what I can find for you.

I just did this with CM6. If you need help let me know.
NOOOOOOOB
I hate posting and asking for help. I enjoy figuring things out for myself. G1 with dmd64. Apparently I have rooted using the ANDRoot method. Shooting for install of Cyanogenmod 6, but not married to that if someone has other suggestions.
Problem? For a long list of reasons I won't get into, I am stuck using a Mac 10.4.
Just makes all instructions I am following a little bit different. I have dreamimg'ed...Put the mod on my root, all kinds of things, even starting from scratch with factory resets etc...
While I haven't "bricked" I have yet to get any MOD working yet. Have started of thinking of "different" ways of doing things so that they will take hold...Yet have realized I am getting awfully close to bricking..
Does ANYONE know of procedure to use/put on MOD using a MAC? I know I'm a NOOB, but I doubt I'm the first...

I used the instructions at this wiki. When it comes to flashing the recovery, I had to look into the discussion section and use what one of the users posted to actually get telnet to flash the recovery to my phone. I did however manage to successfully flash my G1 with CM6.
Thank you. Good stuff. I guess my question in particular is...My phone IS rooted (checked with T emulator) but before I flash mod, do I still have to change the radio? Right now I'm listed at dmd64, do I have to goto one of the RC's or can I just flash? I have tried to change the radio but it always stops at the rainbow screen.

Personally, I did exactly what that guide I linked said. I'm not sure if you can just flash or if you have to downgrade. I do know, though, that downgrading is pretty simple and it doesn't take much time. As for the radio, I know that CM5 and CM6 (and I am assuming CM7 also) require DangerSPL. When you flash DangerSPL, the instructions also tell you which radio to flash, and to be careful because flashing the incorrect radio can brick your phone.
Hows it going you guys? this is my first post in the Droid X forum. Im sorry if im posting incorrectly or in the wrong section. Im currently a G1 owner but looking to make the switch to verizon. Having a hard time debating weather to get the Incredible or the X. I'm seeing all kinds or information out there talking about what you can and cant do but nothing is very clear yet. Looking to get a few questions answered. Hopefully the information here will help other gromets like myself to get a better understanding what this whole efuse/bootloader thing means to us.
So with root access, i can do everything im am used to with root?
like run apps that require super user permissions,
run metamorph,
wifi tether,
run adb to push files and run scripts
And with out the bootloader capabilities, i can not:
load custom roms
nandroid backup
run setCPU?
Am i correct in these findings? Am i missing anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If there is already a post that covers all of these topics, please, mods, move this there.
Thank you so much in advance.
Correct!

'SetCPU' may be possible, if you're referring to overclocking in general. =p I don't know if SetCPU works with the way the Milestone is overclocked, but if it does, then SetCPU should work.
Why wouldn't nandroid backup work without bootloader? Worked on milestone as well without bootloader...
The question I have is then: what can a ROM do that root can't? If I can remove crap and change to sense UI with root (right?), then why is a rom needed, except for kernel changes?
Having root means you can customize the current rom on your phone to your hearts content (not that some of it will be easy). it prevents you from loading other roms that people have made, ones that would include the sense ui, 2.2+, etc. some of the heavier customizations and functionality will require more changes or code bases than can be changed in root.
Thats so great you guys. I think im willing to work without the custom roms for now. as long as i can do all the other things mentioned. but i dont see anywhere in the threads on how to gain root/SU access.

wait, i beleive thats where us gromets are getting confused.
so how are we able to:
like run apps that require super user permissions,
run metamorph,
wifi tether,
run adb to push files and run scripts?
A loadable kernel module hack like what's done on the Milestone should be possible.
SetCPU will run and change frequencies with just straight root - but no overclocking.

so with straight root, we can do these things right?
run apps that require SU permissions (like metamorph, clearme, autokiller, etc.)
run ADB to push files and remove system apps
wifi tether (non verizon $20/mo)
But there is still no straight root access available yet.
is this correct?
not metamorph i believe we need nand unlocked
The only way i see you getting to do the things you're wanting to within a year is by going with the incredible, we already have root and are on the verge of having a cracked bootloader, The milestone came out the same time as the moto droid (or roughly the same time i can't remember) but is still not rooted and the DroidX has the same bootloader so i don't see a root anytime soon

Garrett-
thank you so much for your informative answer. but im still shady on some parts.
i thought we had "root only" available, which was the same as the milsestone. And the only thing we were missing was access to the bootloader which blocked us from running custom roms. Is that incorrect? Are none of the tasks i mentioned "at all" possible at this time?
Thank you so much for your insight.

The Milestone has been rooted, but its encrypted bootloader has not been cracked, leaving it with no custom roms.
The Droid X has not been rooted yet, nor has its similarly encrypted bootloader been cracked.
I have a Nexus One and a friend has an Incredible. Both still have locked bootloaders and both are running custom ROM's. I cannot say if that will be the case with the X, but I would like to think it would be. Once I had root on my N1 I was able flash an alternate recovery which allows me to load any ROM I choose. See this thread for more info, this is the method that I used.

I'm weighing in here but I'm not an expert so please correct if I'm wrong.
The reason that the Incredible is able to load a custom ROM is that they found a way to do a "temporary unlock" of nand which allows us to load a custom recovery. This custom recovery allows for the the temporary unlock which is required to load a new ROM. When the phone is rebooted nand relocks.
So, while we are able to load custom ROMs on the Incredible it's because unrevoked figured out how to temporarily unlock nand. With the encryption on the milestone and Droid X bootloaders they haven't figured out how to do this temporary (or permanent) unlock - thus no custom ROMs.

It's amazing what a day makes, as the Droid X is now rooted. Why did it take so much longer to root the Milestone? Well, no one cares about England. Just kidding, but the customer base for the Milestone, I would assume, is much smaller then that of the Droid, and similarly the Droid X, so you're going to see a lot more people working on the Droid X.
I would like to get into the scene of rooting my phone now and exploring what it can do. Maybe there's not much it can do that I am expecting, but I won't know what its all about until I do it and get familiar with it.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me out and tell me the best/maybe easiest method to root my phone? It is the HTC Hero with software build of 2.31.651.7 and Firmware version 2.1 -update1
If I am able to root it, which rom would you all suggest I try out as a noob? I don't really want the Sprint TV or Amazon MP3 bloatware. I would like to be able to keep stuff like my gmail, Androidd market, Sprint GPS iff it matters. I would also like to be able to do some customizing in a similar way like with Launcher Pro Plus.
Am I able to root, and if so, can someone help me to be able to root my phone today?
Thank you for your help and time,

If you want to theme (i.e. decompiling framework and rebuilding) you need a DeOdex rom.
GMail and the Market are in every rom and I am pretty sure Sprint GPS is installable from its apk.
But once you have root access you can get RootExplorer and Navigate to /System/App (if its in the same spot as the evo) and delete the bloatware from your stock rom.
I would also like to know the root method of choice for the Hero.
I need to root someone elses phone.
Edit: These might be worth a look.

So when I install a custom rom, does it install the Sprint APK file for me, and then from that point I choose whether to install it or not? If that is the case, does it do this will all the default files and that is how you choose what you want to keep and delete?

Most roms have their bloatware removed and usually gets put in a folder on your SD card so you can install what the rom dev removed.
If you install an OTA based rom it will usually have the stock apps with some of the useless ones removed.
But if you use an AOSP rom, like Cyanogen, there wont be any HTC or Sprint apps.
It's really up to the rom dev to decide what they want in their rom.
Once you flash the new rom you can use RootExplorer or ADB to delete those apps that you don't want.
Is that what you were asking?
Also I found another root method:

Yes I think you answered it. Now I just need to know how to root, and what to do when I root to load a custom rom. I also need to find out which rom would be best for me to start out with?
Again, I would like to be able to load some of the default bloatware and rid the rest and then load up some programs from the apps market.
Thank you again,

I would recommend rooting and exploring your current stock rom first untill you feel comfortable with installing a recovery, nandroid backing up, using the recovery to wipe/flashing the new rom.
When I first rooted my phone I was told to
spend a week reading how to root.
Root my stock rom.
Spend a week reading about new roms and how to flash and backup.
THEN try to flash a new rom.
Asking "Which rom is best" usually will get you flamed, It comes down to personal preference.
Here is the wiki of roms for the hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=CDMA_Hero_ROMs
First rom I flashed on my evo was a Fresh rom.
It's pretty stock with some tweaks done to it.

And hopefully someone will be able to answer which rooting method to use.

Not a problem, I know where you're coming from. I was terrified to root when I first read about it.
I'll try my best to answer what I can.
And if Unrevoked works with the .7 version, It basically does everything for you so it's really simple.
If you can check your Radio Baseband version and it's one of these, unrevoked should work.
But we should wait for someone to confirm.
(Should be in Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Software info)

Again, thank you for your time and patience. I really want to do this and want to do it right. If something would go wrong, I wouldn't know what to do.
My radio baseband version is 2.42.01.04.27
Will wait to hear back or see if anyone can confirm it working.
What is unrevoked? I am guessing it's kind of a "one click" type thing that will root the phone, or is it more then that?
Thank you,

*EDIT* So I read your link and read up on it a little. I have a basic understanding of what it does, but again, this is all new to me
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think it would be easier to ruu back to .5 and root from there. I know for a fact that unrevoked will root .5, as its the method I used. Also, I've heard good things about regaw's root, too.
Just follow the directions EXACTLY and you can't go wrong.

ADHD, huh? Then you might be better off with a one click method. ADB method, while not difficult, requires a fair amount of reading and exact typing, or you get a hero shaped paperweight. Superoneclick seems to be the option of choice.

I've just unlock my phone using an xtc-clip.
It's now S-OFF, but nothing is different.
I don't know how to flash a custom recovery or a custom rom and rommanager doesn't work with temp-root.
Can someone help me to begin using my brand new S-OFF phone ?
Thanks a lot.
well to get any help i guess is to wait till the expert dev's create a way to make S-Off for the people who have S-ON and theres no builds or kernels or anything yet to be released so all i gotta say is to wait.
It appears at the moment the primary focus is getting root for S-on so there is not much else for now. Hopefully we'll get some CM7 goodness going quickly after breaking this thing
In the meantime, you can root your device and gain access to apps requiring root like wifi tether, adfree, shootme, etc.

All i needis some help to flash them.

In the meantime, you can root your device and gain access to apps requiring root like wifi tether, adfree, shootme, etc.

Ok but we can already do that even if our phone is S-ON.
What are the advantages to have S-OFF phone if only this we can do can be already done without S-OFF ?

Temproot is not Perma Root. The two of that is different from each other. Temproot will be gone as soon as you reboot your phone.
Also, not all apps requiring root work with that hack. For example, wifi tether completely fails. I suspect this might also be in part because of the kernel, though.
First u need is root. Use the superoneclickroot (psneuter), then clockworkmod recovery, a custom Firmware andere at least the newest Radio.. finished xD
shared on the go
he is not asking what u need but how to flash different stuff
well for the clockworkmod:
get temp root: see first post of this
than do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046759
and furthermore:
POSTED IN THE WRONG SECTION
and
USE THE FREAKING SEARCH
u only need to look over the current posts in this forum and u read for a little longer than 5 minutes you should have known what to do.
Currently the flashing and roms are in its early stages. no fool-proof noob safe easy to flash crap around here: you must know a little of the android system and have some balls. Just do it: bricking your phone is quite hard these days...
Though i managed it olmost the past few weeks with starting to root it haha

So I am a new person and therefor can not post this in the development thread under the forum where I feel it would belong with the other root related questions.... So i followed the SUPER GUIDE to root my phone (Thank you so much Slapshot and PirateGhost, I was beginning to regret not getting a skyrocket until I found your thread). My super user is running into an issue I can not seem to fix.....
Maybe this is simple or maybe I really messed something up....
Basically none of my apps have root anymore (they did at one point and to my knowledge I change nothing...)
When I go to the Super User app to update my binaries and hopefully get any issues resolved I am greeted by the following error message in the update log: "Failed to find currently installed SU binary. Update cannot continue"
Is there a resolution for this? I have not found anyone even running into the same issue on the Vivid.....
A little nervous.... I didnt have near this many issues rooting my ATRIX and modding the living daylights out of that.
Have you checked with Root Checker Basic to see if you even have Root? If you didn't follow the Super Guide step by step your phone could have relocked after you turned your phone off/on.
If it still fails to update you could try SuperUser Update Fixer.
Yes I have check with root checker.
This may be a dumb question but how do I uninstall Superuser? When I go to the typical application management it does not give me the option. I have done an install again to overwrite the files and nothing changed there.
I followed the instructions step by step (though obviously I messed up somewhere...)

Interesting... maybe your root didn't stick. We had a little trouble with that before but pirateghost fixed the CWM ROOT zip. You have a working CWM Recovery, correct?
In the superguide, I have a second option for root in case the first doesn't work. In your case, go ahead and try the second option. The one involving the supertool. That should get you perm root. If that doesn't even work, then we might have to put you back to stock and go at it again.
EDIT: BEFORE TRYING THE SUPERTOOL, try flashing the new CWM ROOT VER2 zip from CWM recovery and see if root sticks.
Slapshot, thank you for checking the General Thread, I really do appreciate that. I have tried both methods multiple times since the root failure seeing as so many people said they had to run the methods multiple times to make them stick (this admittedly may be part of the issue). The most recent one has been the CWM ROOT VER2. Still no dice. Is there a method to remove and re install super user? Or am I reading into the error too literally and instead I just basically do not have root.

No problem. At this point I think you may just not have root... but first, go ahead and go into bootloader (power off, then power on while holding power and vol down). Does your device say unlocked?
*Just a clarification*
You have to unroot your phone to get rid of it Idk why I put uninstall/reinstall earlier...still out there from last night I guess.

Yes the device still says unlocked. That was one of the first things I checked... Haha....
As I said ive flashed the rooted CWM and it says it went over successfully.
If i use the Zerg exploit it still seems to go over successfully (I realize this has a tenancy to mess with internal storage and only provide a temp root but i do not even get that temp root).
How would I unroot my device? Do you mean flash to stock and relock my boot loader?
As I said I have flashed several devices in the past (Atrix, eee pad transformer, HTC Inspire, HTC DINC, SAMSUNG GALAXY S T-Mobile) but I am not completely up to date on all of the technical terms...

Yes, I mean relock the bootloader and back to stock rom, then try again. Do you know how to get back to stock?

I haven't told anyone how to do it surprisingly, and I'm more than happy to help . I was honestly thinking about adding reverting back to stock to the superguide, and I think I just may do that. Here is the link. Pirateghost is the man.

Thank you for this and all of your help, people like you and ghostpirate are why i still feel like I can turn to the XDA community. I will try this firs thing in the morning and give an update on how things went. I would try it tonight but lets be honest, its the 1st of the year and the last thing I need to be doing is messing with technology.....

It's no problem, this isn't a dumb question or easy issue by any means. If the method I directed to you doesn't work, let me know. There is another way to do it without all the code.

Worked perfectly. I flashed it back to stock using the thread you linked me to. Then I did the CWM Root method and so far so good. I appreciate all of your help
Nice, I'm glad you were able to get everything working.
