I've been having this problem for about a week now where my search and home buttons stop working after a reboot or if the phone is powered on. I have been a longtime Enomther ROM user and this started happening after I did a routine backup. The last app I had installed was Widget Locker but I do not think this is the problem because: a) From reading through numerous forums, nobody has reported a similar issue because of WL & b) This happens even after I uninstalled the app and performed several clean installs of both CyanogenMod & Enomther's ROMs.
A factory wipe from Settings followed by a clean install of any ROM makes the problem go away but: rebooting to recovery to do a nandroid backup, restoring a nandroid backup, or turning the phone off then on again all recreate the issues with the search and home buttons. Can anyone give me any insight?
Note: I should probably call HTC Support, but because I have an unlocked bootloader I don't know what to tell them...
Htc support would do much for you, it sounds kinda obvious that's it isn't an issue with your phone but the intial rom/software/settings setup you have.
If you wipe and do a fresh install it is fine, correct? Your issues only come back when you restore the original you where having the issue with, right?
So what does that tell us...
Something got botched up along the way, or did I just completely misread.
How about this, backup everything with titanium & then wipe & do a clean install, then try restoring apps one by one, kinda a pain, but could help you narrow it down, unlikely it's an app problem, but stranger things have happened.
*Is that any nandroid backup or just the one you were having the intial problems with?
Sent from my phone.
Actually it happens when I restore any Nandroid backup, including ones from before I even had the problem. It definitely has to be a software issue, but I can't narrow down where the problem began. I thought it was Widget Locker, because of the Homehelper option, or LCD Density changer, but I stopped using those apps and it still persists. What I have been doing as I've tested my different backups and tested different ROMs is use the titanium backup restore option just to preserve my settings and apps. It's a pain, but I've been dealing with it.
Okay, so I think I finally got rid of the problem. *fingers crossed* I had to dig deep into the archives and found a nandroid backup from about two months ago that seems to be working well at the moment. I've done multiple reboots, messed with spare parts settings that required reboots, and all seems to be well. My long, individual nightmare is over.

I was using my phone a few hours ago (adding an icon from the application drawer to the home screen if that will help with solving the problem) when suddenly, the phone reset itself as though I had done a wipe from the recovery console. I had to sign back into Google and re-sync my contacts and calendar. All my settings were back to defaults. My home screen icons disappeared and changed to the default icons (browser, contacts, dialer, market, messaging, maps) as did the wallpaper. All my SMS messages were gone. Basically, it as was as though I had wiped and flashed the ROM for the first time.
However, and this is the weird part. Not only were all my apps still there but they were still installed. All the settings were lost but they were still there. I am not concerned with the restoration of my settings or anything like that. I've got that all covered with backups. My big question is why did it happen? Has anyone experienced or heard of this phantom reset? My ROM details are in my sig but just in case that changes and someone visits this post later, it will make more sense to them if I list it in the post itself.
Cyanogen 3.6.8.1 w/Recovery Menu v1.4. Radio v2.22.19.26i. A2SD on 550MB ext2 partition. Compcache enabled/24MB.
Has the only happened once with you? It could have been just a glitch.

Well, I can tell you why your apps survived, because you have them on sd card so that's not weird, you can wipe all you want and they will survive.
I would say this is a glitch, don't worry about it unless it happens again.

Yes, the apps on sd being the reason I didn't lose them makes sense. I had a different problem losing apps on the sd when I wiped but that was a mistakes in the way I was slinking and it was also on JF1.51 (a2sd is very unstable on that ROM). Anyway, I'm seriously hoping it was just a one time glitch because my setup is voodoo smooth otherwise. I finally got my G1 running perfectly and I'd hate to think something was wrong. Either way, Nandroid is always an option.
Phantom Reset Not a Glitch. Happened Again!
OK. So it happened again. The phantom reset that I described in the first post happened to me again. It's pretty annoying to have to perform Nadroid restores all the time. Anyone have any real thoughts other than telling me it was a fluke?
Possible Answer
I am pretty certain that this happened right after I used Backup for Root Users. I have my identical setup on my father's G1 and this has never happened. He has told me in the past that he does not use that app. I don't want to instantly blame the app but I want to provide as much info as possible. Cyan's ROMs are too good for this to be an issue.

The dev has reported that it has issues (if you can replicate the errors, send him a logcat)
hes on the forums on this site
SOLVED
Thanks a lot. I will try and write-up (on dev's site) of what I was doing when it happened. It happened to me twice so I don't think I will use it again (at least until it's fixed). I am a backup freak so I like to use multiple apps but nandroid seems to cover it all. I will stick with what seems to work (and work well) for now.
On a side note, Cyan's latest looks too juicy not to try out. Going to upgrade now.
Hi, I have an AT&T Nexus One, running FRF85B currently. As of lately, even before update I noticed my home and search button stopped working. The haptic feedback responds when I touch them but they don't do anything. I searched the forums so please don't flame me if I missed a thread. Much thanks to anyone that can help!
P.S. I soft reset the phone a few times and also have reflashed
can you post a logcat of what happens when you press the buttons? and also try wiping cache and dalvik cache
Try to wipe and reflash and post logcat
Gfs stock phone just started doing this. Will try to get some kind of logs... A reset wouldn't make her very happy, fffuuuu

according to this we arent the only ones. it looks like a factory reset can fix the problem, but some on the link above re-encountered the problem weeks later.
surprised XDA hasnt run into this before...
in addition to home/search buttons haptic'in but not doing anything, slide lock screen goes away and the phones cannot receive calls.
Those buttons are programmable, maybe some app took control and does nothing ?A launcher perhaps?
'Programmable'? How can I set Search to ixquick?

The app's manifest needs to mention that it can handle that event

doesnt make sense though, everyone that has had this issue had all 3 completely unrelated issues:
1. buttons vibrate, do nothing
2. phone cannot receive calls
3. lock screen disappears
a wipe fixed it last night but man it was a ***** to reinstall everything for her.

This is exactly what is happening to me. I'm going to wipe now.
god damn it. this **** just started happening again... n1 has been running the OTA stock GB 2.3.3...
we ended up getting HTC to warranty the phone and everything was fine until this morning..
any help?

So i started having this problem about 3 weeks ago as well right after i flashed CM7's newest experimental build. first thing I witnessed was not being able to receive calls. I figured that this was a problem with CM7 and flashed modaco's r26, after a full wipe, when it just came out a few days ago. After a day, i got the problem with the lock screen and the home and search buttons not working. I again thought this was a problem with gingerbread for some reason and flashed MIUI Mod Rodriguez style rom, again full wipe. I had restored everything through titanium backup and other forms of recovery and within about 60 minutes my home button and search keys stopped working.
So I finally figured that it was some settings that I must have adjusted and carried through numerous different ROMs that caused the problems. So next time around I didn't restore anything, running on MIUI mod, and didn't restore anything for the remainder of the day to see what happened. Low and behold, after a reset the problem came back. One other complication is that the phone will always forget my google account and i'll have to re-connect it. Then I realize that the home key doesn't work. So even not importing anything from my old Rom's with a clean wipe didn't get rid of it.
I still get haptic feedback, but the buttons just don't do anything. I changed the setting for how home and search respond in both scenarios and can't get any response either. I flashed back to an old version now and so far i'm alright. But if someone can figure out why this is happening that would be awesome.
For the other people who are having this problem, when you're doing a clean wipe are you then restoring things back via titanium back up or otherwise? and when did you first start to experience these problems?
Istarted having this same problem today. I recently flashed over to cm7 rc2 and then the same thing happened. It seems like after I do a titanium backup and then change a setting it will reset to the cm boot screen and when it comes back there's no home screen or search buttons. All the same issues. Haptic feedback works but nothing happens. I'm on an evo btw.
Same thing occuring for me after flashing CM7. Reverted back to Miui, but so far no luck in fixing this. Numerous factory resets have yet to resolve as well. This is pretty frustrating...
Having this issue as well on CM7. DEFINITELY Titanium related.
I had this problem too. I just had to shut down the phone then leave it for about 10-15 minutes then turn it on again. Everything should be fine again. ^^
Wonder if you guys could help me.
I've been using Froyo 2.2 on my Galaxy S for a while with no problems, upgraded through Kies.
All of a sudden today the screen stopped being responsive - ie I could swipe to unlock it but then the screen was that slightly grey/dull colour as if the screen was about to turn off. The touch screen basically became unresponsive with the only button that worked being the main home screen button, which would switch between the zoomed out view all of my homepages and my main homepage. Didn't think much of it so rebooted the phone (also I haven't installed any new apps or made any big setting changes lately).
However, when I rebooted apps like Titanium Backup, LaucherPro, NetCounter, Handcent etc kept force closing automatically making the phone almost unusable. I've tried restarting the phone, taking the battery out but to no avail. I then managed to switch to the default samsung launcher and reinstall some of the problem apps which sort of helped, but the more apps I try the more I find just crash upon starting.
What's the best way to solve this problem, preferably without loosing all my data/settings?
Seems like something has become corrupted, and I'm a bit worried this has happened so out of the blue....
Really don't want to have to a factory reset if possible, but looks like I'll have to
i think wiping the cache may do the trick, it happened to me after installing new theme. couldnt even use it for 5 mins to back up my stuff. i wiped the cache in recovery and that fixed it.
I tired wiping the cache in recovery mode but didn't help much (other than allowing me to use TWLauncher, and hence being able to semi use the phone).
Don't have a backup either , mainly because since upgrading to 2.2 I can't get any rooting methods to work oddly.
Could be in a for a long evening....
What really gets me is that it just happened randomly. I just tried to use the phone after it was in standby and it just wasn't responsive - after the reboot the force closing apps problem occured. I wasn't trying to install anything, bit worrying really.
i think the only way to get back to normal is a factory reset. i dont personally know any other methods. but its upto you to wipe the phone or keep searching for a solution.
the cause is probably through some sort of corruption or wrong setting in an application, i wouldnt panic about the phone dying or anything lol, just a ball ache restoring everything..
Hope you get it sorted remember to make a backup when its fixed. i make backups on a weekly basis as im constantly flashing and modding, and it makes life soooo much easier.

Yeah I had a feeling that was going to be the outcome , ah well!
I normally do backup, just I haven't been modding or flashing much lately so assumed android wouldn't just die on me! Lesson learnt, always backup!
The phone is still usable, so I should be able to do a backup of my apps.
if you can still do backup... all is not lost then.
I'm hoping someone can help me. I installed CM KANG 7.1.5 on my Milestone a couple of months ago and for the most part, everything was working great (at least better than the stock 2.2 on it). But over the last week or so, I've been having a problem with wifi on my phone. Basically, wifi is not working any more or at least it's inconsistent now.
Previous to this week, I had no issues. I had a number of wifi networks set up, and everytime I went to the wifi hotspot, the phone would automatically switch from using data to wifi.
However now, it appears the phone doesn't detect wifi networks any more. I've tried multiple hotspots and still nothing. I've tried using Wifi Analyzer and doesn't see anything either. I've rebooted the phone multiple times, taken the battery out, reseated the SIM card and still nothing. I use 3G Watchdog and Juice Defender and have removed both and still nothing. The strange thing is it's sporadic. ie. wifi will work one day and then the next day in exactly the same spot, the phone get no wifi at all.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? How did you fix it? I've thought about wiping the phone and starting over again but I'm hoping to avoid that, if possible.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Doing a complete nandroid backup, wiping everything, and installing a new ROM takes me a total of about 15 minutes. If the problem I was having isn't fixed by that, I just restore the backup.
I should also point out that 7.1.5 is outdated and the current version is 7.2.0; quite a bit of work was done on WiFi issues in the past few months, and you're probably missing out on fixes for these exact issues.
It can be a pain to set up a new ROM, but worst case scenario is that it doesn't fix anything and you can just restore the backup and be right back to where you were an hour ago.
Please keep us updated here.
Sorry, I'm somewhat new to this (this Milestone is the first phone I've ever rooted, installed CyanogenMod, etc) so I'm probably going to ask some very noob questions here. My apologies if these are very simple or dumb questions.
I've been hesistant to rebuild/upgrade my phone to fix this problem for a couple of reasons including -
My wifi still comes and goes randomly. I worry that maybe it's a flaky hardware issue more than software so I don't want to spend all this time rebuilding it again to find out it's a loose connection or something like that instead.
I assume all my apps, data, settings, etc will be wiped out if I rebuild or update my CyanogenMod unless I use something like Titanium Backup to back them up? Or is there some better/faster way for doing it or maybe CyanogenMod and Nandroid have some better/faster solution that I don't know about? It took me, it seemed like days, to fully restore all that stuff last time so I want to make sure it's worth doing.
Is there an ETA on a "production" aka non-RC version of 7.20? If it's coming soon, I'd rather wait. I'd hate to upgrade to the RC version and then 2 weeks later have to do it all over again.
Thanks for your help.
About ugrading to 7.2:
- do full nandroid backup first
- clean both caches
- apply 7.2 zip
- clean both caches again
- rebot
I use that method when moving from one version of the ROM to another and no serious issues (one or twice I have to clean caches one more time after first restart). In worst case you have nandroid backup so you can quickly move back.
I have done full wipe (including partial sd and complete ext partitions cleanup) just few times e.g. moving from CM6 to CM7.
Generally I apply full wipe only when moving from one ROM to another, in beetwen versions of the same ROM I just clean caches twice.
Ok, this is getting really, really annoying because i have to wipe data every 1-2 days, luckly i have Titanium Backup...but i can't keep doing this forever!
The issue started using Eclipse ROM, i was using Holo Locker, and one day the phone refused to unlock...i clicked every bloody button on the phone, i tried everything, and i got something only plugging it to a PC... the screen turned on, and what i saw was disheartening: The wallpaper was gone, it was black, and the touchscreen wasn't working...rubbing here and there i managed to make the touch working and managed to unlock the screen...but it didn't unlocked it just stayed...black! Totally surrended to my phone, i wiped everything and patiently i reinstalled some apps... and then it happened again! I initially thought that the issue was caused by Holo Locker, but i was wrong because stock locker was stuck too..but it was messed up, with some elements shifted a little lower...and this time, it didn't unlock!
As of now, i tried this with 3-4 Gingerbread ROMS, SBF'd 2 times, and nothing changed...sometimes, it just freezes...here are my guesses:
- Something messed up with phone itself (dunno what could be, maybe something that didn't get involved in flashing ROMs and SBFing?)
- Something stored into Google Backup (probably, it's this too, because i noticed that if i choose to put backups on the phone, at startup, it freezes after a very few minutes)
- It's something involved with the kernel, because it doesn't happen (for what i tried, it didn't) on ICS/JB ROMs
- I thought it was launcher's fault, but i tried multiiple launchers and it didn't worked anyway so...
Any guesses guys?
This doesn't happen to me, so I'd say it's either the phone or perhaps it's one of your apps. An interesting experiment would be to run the phone stock (i.e., install no apps, do not restore from Google during setup, though Google calendar, contacts, Google+, GMai, etc., sync should be ok) and see if you can get past where you usually see this happening. If so, then it's probably one or more of your apps. So, at that point, rank your apps from most to least important, and then install them in batches of 5 or so apps. If the freezing happens again, then maybe you narrow it down to one of those 5 apps.
Which SBF have you been using?

Yep, already done this, i ran the phone as stock, but nothing happened, now i flashed once again minimoto, AND restored from google account, and used the titanium backup from earlier...as of now nothing happened...i'll wait...
Thak you anyway
Ok, if anyone could ever have this problem, probably the issue was caused by the application "Wallpaper Changer" that i used to switch wallpaper every 2 hours...it probably got stuck somewhere and freezed the phone...as of now, it didn't freezed yet so i think i found the solution.
