Hi there,
I was wondering if it is at all possible to change what permissions programs have after they have been installed, or possibly editing the APK/Files within it to change the permissions they use before installation.
I find it a bit disconcerting installing programs that request security access to your Phone Book among other things when their function has nothing to do with it.
Also is there a program that is able to monitor/block/limit speed in regards to network usage on open ports? A similar program is created for PC's called Net Limiter that gives a break down of all incoming and outgoing connections and their corresponding ports.
With these sorts of phones getting even more powerful, I think there really should be a way to monitor what these programs are upto in regards to Network communications.
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
No one have any suggestions in regards to securing their phones/monitoring apps?

I have a local file server accessble via wifi (or should be) its "\\server"
WHEN Wifi is on and connected and I put that in File Manager "\\server", it says cant connect, but if I put that in PIE it goes there.
Anyone have any ideas how I can get this to work? It used to work in WM6.0.
You should try Resco File Explorer; a LOT better for that purpose. I have been in a similar situation in mapping the drive and it works flawlessly. There's a 15 day trial to check it out; think you'll be pretty impressed.
Try "\\servername\sharename"...
try to access a particular share instead of getting the shares list by using the "\\servername" convention...
try something like "\\servername\sharename" and see what happens...
alternately, i highly recommend schap's rip of the HTC Network Plugin v1.0 Build 30468...it will make the steps of accessing commonly used local shares a whole lot easier by allowing you to map the drive into the "\Network" folder on your device...see 4th post in this thread:

enjoy!!!
I dont want to buy Resco, but it does work nicely.
\\servername\sharename fails as well and \\servername\sharename\ etc..
I will try the plugin and see. (Update) I instlled it and cant find it anywhere.. How do I "use" it?
Thanks!

Total Commander is free and does this well.
It also has a registry editor, text editor.
Did I mention it is free.
Another thing to check...
maybe your wifi connection is set up in "Internet" mode as opposed to "Work" mode...might explain why it works via PIE...
i think i remember experiencing total failures accessing local shares if my wifi connection was set up as "Internet"
on Settings->Connections->Wifi, edit the particular wifi connection you use and on the first page in the second combo box labeled "Connects to:", make sure the value is "Work"
give that a shot and let us know!!!
That was it!! Thanks! Odd setting really.

woohoo!!! i'm a noob WinMo user as of May 2008 with my Tytn2...coming from 5 years of using something from motorolla that was equivalent to a nokia 3310...totally basic PHONE in the truest sense...no color screen, no camera, big and clunky, pathetic interface...useful ONLY for voice and sms
but my point is that coming from decades of using Windows, somehow WinMo makes sense in a microsoft kind of way with all its occassionally cryptic features and inexplicable odd behaviors...i'm a geek and i'm lovin' it
before this thread is closed, the network plugin is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...i used to use resco for mapping drives but found its behavior to be erratic when my wifi signal was weak...sometimes taking ages to try to open a share just before the wifi icon would show that the connection had dropped
network plugin, IMHO, seems to work a bit better...YMMV

check in Settings->Connections->Network Plugin
while resco's network drive mapping configuration is accessible only from within resco (even though the shares resco mounts are accessible system-wide in any application whether resco is running or not), the network plugin gives a better "integrated" feeling with WinMo even though it is not much different from resco's capabilities
Got the HTC network plugin working. Now I have 2 ways to access the share.
I've done searches and I find many answers about making Opera not ask about connecting to the network, but I haven't found anyone mention the other permissions.
I would like to allow Opera Mini (multiple cert. version) the privilege to write data, but when I try to set permissions in jbed (Esmertec 20090416.5.1) the permissions for Read and Write User Data are hard-set to "Never Allow." There is no way to change them. Also, just for the sake of mentioning it, the Net Access permission is set to "Ask" and is editable, but once clicked on, the only selection available is.. "Ask."
I just get frustrated having to use a few different browsers just to do simple things. I would rather just use Mini almost exclusively, instead of having to pop open PIE in order to download a file or save a picture.
FWIW, the registry edit to make fonts larger in PIE also doesn't seem to work on my Fuze with updated stock ROM. But that's probably an issue for a different thread..
Is there a solution to this problem that I missed somewhere?
Thanks in advance.
Does anyone know of a software that Prevents unauthorized software installations.
If anyone knows of such a tool or can create one, please let me know. I'm running a BlackBerry OS
Thanks,
Joone

Thanks for the quick reply dwgibson. I installed Lookout and tested it out by installing software and it prevent me from installing software. This really isn't what I'm looking for.

If you feel your girlfriend is going to install spyware on your phone then I think you need to get a new girlfriend more then worry about what she might do to your phone. I hear were your coming from but I rarely leave my phone where others can gain access to it. As for the firewall program. I'll have to give it a look and see how much of a hog it is. It would be nice to have a program firewall on the phone.
Thanks for the quick reply Wil.

Two options:
#1) Set the PIN lock on the device with <1 minute as timeout - Settings, Security.
#2) Set the Registry Policy on the device to prevent .CAB installation - Windows Mobile MSDN.
HTH,
Hi hilaireg,
Thanks for your reply. In response:
1) I mentioned in my original post that a device pin lock is not what I want to do as everytime I use my mobile very frequently as most people do and having to unlock my mobile everytime will be a problem
2) Setting the Registry Policy to prevent .CAB installation is not too bad of an idea. It will however prevent me from installing software. If I can't find the solution I'm looking for, passcode to access the software installation process, then I will have to settle for that option.
There's an app for the iphone that might work if their was a similar app for BB. The app is named Lockdown and it password protects apps that you choose to password protect. Password protecting apps may give me the privacy I need if I password protect the correct apps. However, I can't find an app similar to Lockdown available for BB.
If anyone knows of such an app please let me know. I'll continue looking.

Hi ajmusic24,
You're describing functionality similar to Windows restricted accounts. AFAIK, there is no feature to "protect" specific funtionality ... other than via the policies.
If you aren't successful in finding a custom application to meet your needs, you could always create a couple of registry files which enable/disable the installation policy.
Cheers,
hilaireg,
I would prefer an app that can provide the option of password protecting the software installation process. What you bring up about creating a couple of registry files which enable/disable the installation policy might be a temporary fix. How would I go about doing this?
Thanks,
Joone
it might require a new app that would repace the existing cab process, something like "CabInstl". So when a cab file is launched the new app would process it. This new app then would check the registry to verify uid/psw before installing to default location or other location.
Hi...first time posting, so thanks in advance for your help.
Trying to keep my diamond from being used to look up pictures on the internet
I'd like to be able to keep wi-fi available for 3rd party applications like skype, but I need the browsers to go...specifically the iexplore.exe in the /windows folder which is impossible to delete.
The ideal solution would be to password protect browsers or the wi-fi connection. A text-only browser would also be great, but only if I can get rid of iexplore. If there is no other solution, I'm willing to disable or lock wifi altogether.
Are there any browser-less roms without the iexplore.exe on them, or a possible way to corrupt the integrated iexplore.exe program so its unusable? This is very important to me. If you have any ideas at all, please let me know.
How did you go with this?
I'm looking to do exactly the same thing.
my friend if I understand you you want to disable the Internet from the SIM to stop dialing in the net.....If thats right you can use NoData it disable the settings to make Data-Connection
for the browsers you can use opera mobile 10 and use the settings to stop showing the pictures
sry for my englisch
Hey everyone,
I'd like to connect to a windows server 2008 box in my home network to access networked files (like you would in a LAN), so I don't have to fill my SGS's memory only to realize I only have access to a very small part of my movie/music collection.
I've been looking around for guides on how to do this but I haven't found a very good one yet, so links or small tips on how to do this are always welcome, just like other solutions for my problem.
I also tried openvpn, but it seems I'll need to run some kind of Virtual Appliance with needs a lot of RAM (which my basic server box does not have).
Thx for your help guys,
